Book Description
This is the first book to provide explicit case histories of the successful marriage of form and content in graphic design. It explores nearly 100 classic and contemporary works and explains why they are aesthetically significant and how they function as good design. By focusing on the study and appreciation of specific works, Design Literacy breaks new ground and will be of interest to students and designers at all levels.
Customer Reviews:
good but not on time.......2007-10-01
the book was new as promised but i got it too late though it was 2nd day delivery via DHL.
i was upset for the late delivery only but otherwise it was good
I'm no super idiot, but..........2003-06-03
I use this book as a catch me up for everyone one of my students who are interested in graphic design, but don't know anything about it. This book and the sequel "Design Literacy Continued" are easy to read, wide in scope and plow through touchy subjects like Racist Websites and the garbage all over contemporary magazines.
It's the best education I ever got sitting in the bathroom.
Not quite a history book.......2002-11-18
This book isn't quite a history book, nor is it a book on design theory. While it has aspects of both, it's more like a series of case studies, in which almost 100 designers, magazines, posters, advertisements, icons, types... are analyzed and discussed and placed in a historical context.
So if you're expecting a comprehensive book on design history, this is not for you. In no way does it feel complete for a design education. What it does is provide thoughtful pieces to consider, and a perspective on the usage of design, originality, trends, etc. The authors do have a point of view, but it doesn't ruin the book. To the contrary, it makes it even more interesting. Design isn't just art and technique It's grounded in economics, history, culture, and politics. Heller and Pomeroy contribute a useful set of essays to help the reader become more aware of these relations.
Excellent As Introduction.......2001-10-11
Design Literacy and Design Literacy (continued) is an excellent introduction to graphic design under the surface. I use Phil Meggs' history book for facts and these books for inspiration.
Makes Me Want to Read More.......2001-04-03
Design Literacy and its sequel, Design Literacy (continued) explain the inner workings (and spirit) of graphic design and some of the best designers. Its been very valuable for my education as a graphic designer.
Book Description
A sequel to its popular forerunner, this edition casts the net even farther in examining the reasons and history behind various objects of design that have had a significant impact on our culture. The objects discussed range from the vintage posters that promoted concerts and fairs during the 1930s to a Rolling Stones CD cover from the 1990s. This volume also investigates larger movements and phenomena, including Norman Rockwell's effect on Americana, and the Cartoon Network's hold on children. Like the first volume, this is an eclectic look at how, why, and if graphic design, in the broadest sense, works as an influence on the public eye. Designers, students, and anyone interested in the history and dynamics of graphics as art and craft will find this an engaging and instructive read.
Customer Reviews:
Certainly worthy reading material.......2001-06-10
Good reading material particularly for serious graphic designers interested in expanding the role of graphic design in today's market place. Heller's accesible prose works for me again
Highly recommended reading for graphic design students........2000-03-03
Steven Heller's Design Literacy Continued is an ongoing survey of graphic design concepts, and examines how graphic design works and impacts the broader culture. Objects which serve as the focus on graphic design concepts and changes are grouped into collective themes and rang from Zap comics to art deco and typographic examples.

Book Description
This Elibron Classics book is a reprint of a 1910 edition by Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig.
Book Description
Music videos have radically changed the way we look at the world. Instantly accessible on a global scale, these revolutionary videos have reflected and influenced popular culture, fashion, sports, advertising, art, cinema, television, and new media-as well as music itself.
Thirty Frames Per Second is the first book to showcase the artistic vision of the music video director. What began two decades ago as little more than a marketing tool showing a band's stage performance has now become a director's medium of expression and experimentation. Spike Jonze, Peter Care, Kevin Kerslake, Mark Romanek, and David Fincher are among the 55 top directors featured-many of whom have come from backgrounds in film, advertising, photography, fine art, or architecture, and some of whom have gone on to make feature films. Nearly 400 stills, culled from the most compelling and influential videos, make this visually stimulating survey of the genre a powerful testament to a brashly innovative contemporary art form.
STEVE REISS is a freelance producer in both production and post-production of music videos, commercials, television, new media, and art books. He has worked on projects with artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, U2, and David Bowie, and was producer on the Breeders' "Cannonball" video for Spike Jonze, among others. He lives in Venice, California.
NEIL FEINEMAN has covered the music and video scene for 20 years for publications such as L.A. Weekly, The Face, and the Los Angeles Times. Founding editor of the award-winning magazines RayGun, Beach Culture, and Gravity, he has written several books on popular culture and is currently editor-in-chief of the new music magazine Revolution. He lives in San Francisco.
JEFF AYEROFF, formerly creative director at A&M Records and Warner Brothers Records, started Virgin Records America in 1987. He is currently in development on a new media launch.
MICHAEL STIPE is a member of the group R.E.M.
400 illustrations in full color, 101/4 x 91/4"

Thirty Frames Per Second: The Visionary Art of the Music Video.......2005-08-03
Not exactly what I was thinking. The title is misleading, the text is unreadable. The idea is good but who care to see picture of actual video. It would have be nice to have video made of this book. Waste of time try to read it.
Worth a Double Review.......2003-11-16
I previously wrote a pretty harsh review of this book after purchasing it last year. In recent times my opinion of it has changed. The book captures TONS of good thoughts , and has excellent still photos. Its very useful, once you get past the fact that there are no video samples included with the book. I would dare to say that if it were to include such video clips on DVD or multimedia CD, it would become an EXCELLENT learning/reference tool for young directors (etc) searching to master their artform.
If only i could edit this review to say 4 1/2 stars!
< please see my old review below>
'Coffee Table Book - More form than function'
Maybe i am being harsh, but the book seems like an 'artbook' with no tangible vision of how its REALLY supposed to bring knowledge to its readers.
Its the prettiest book in the box of ten that i bought last week on Amazon, but its content is suited either for the person with just a passing interest in music videos (like a sunday afternoon coffee guest - "Will she glance at the cosmopolitan or read the Music Video book?" or someone else who has lots time and no specific interest in music videos).
I hardly feel like i am IN the 'minds' of these directors, truly learning from the way they THINK, or other aspects of thier creative story. The book is more like a compilation of 'behind the scenes' glances on 'E' or VH1.
Perhaps including a CD inside the book, with medium resolution copies of all the videos would help a bit. The visual reference would turn each conversation with the directors into a tangible learning experience that anyone with a PC could relate to.
The worst part for me is that most of these videos are of a genre that i dont listen to. I am primarily R&B, Hip-hop, Reggae (Dancehall) by blood and by love. The only people in this book who i listen to are Lauryn Hill and Seal.
I am really disappointed by this book.
Like i said, the book seems like an 'artbook' with no tangible vision of how its REALLY supposed to bring knowledge to its Audience. I am left to wonder who was the target audience?

thrity frames is worth it.......2002-05-28
this book shows all of the music videos and each director. it is very detailed and explains the technique of each video too.
Thirty Frames Per Secondthe Visionary Art of the Music Video.......2002-05-15
The book is great and full of information about almost any director of a music video a person would like to know. It is very colorful and has pictures of familiar music videos. It also inlcudes a biography for each director and mentions their style and techniques.
great design.......2002-02-14
Beautiful Design by Tolleson out of San Francisco. They do wonderful graphic design work. Check out their book "Wash, Soak, Rinse, Spin: Tolleson Design" for more of their style work. There is nothing better than a book that is designed to match the content. Format, type selection, imagery, is all top notch. I highly recommend just for the design itself.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty and lush coffeetable book.......2005-04-06
This is a nice soap-opera guide, large and hardcover with lush color photos throughout. Both daytime and primetime soaps are included, arranged in alphabetical order by the show name. Each show has several pages devoted to it, and the text talks about both the behind-the-scenes production of the show and the storylines of the characters. The quality of the photos in each show's section is great. There are indices in the back with Emmy winners (up to that point, 1991), fan-club addresses, studio addresses, etc. Nice book, nice guide.

Customer Reviews:
Superb!.......2000-01-28
All you ever wanted to know about soaps, past and present, can be found in this wonderful book. I have flipped through it for facts so many times that the book is beginning to fall apart. I can't wait til another info.-packed book by this author comes out!
This Author Has Plenty of Respect.......1999-06-27
The reviewer below seems to blame the author for having no respect because he has done a followup to a book by a man who died. I loved Schemering's book too. But the man died. If he did a third soap opera encyclopedia, I would have loved it. But he couldn't. I was glad someone did. And he did a great job of it. It seems he has plenty of respect for the soaps as well as the readers who have been waiting for a new encyclopedia for years. As for Schemering having a right to the title, I don't know how that works after a person dies, but I do know that there are plenty of books here on Amazon with the same titles.
This author has no respect.......1999-02-25
The author has no respect. This book shows no recognition of the hard work of the original author, the late Christopher Schemering. Schemering wrote the first two editions and might still have control of the titled name of the book.
The most comprehensive book about soap opera's history!.......1998-12-13
This book gives you a complete detailed history of such soaps on today such as All My Children, Another World, As The World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our lives, General Hospital, Guiding Light, One Life to Live, Port Charles, Sunset Beach, and The Young and the Restless. An extenshive history of off the air soaps like Capitol, Generations, Love of Life, Loving, Ryan's Hope, Santa Barbara, and Search for Tomorrow. It also includes previous award winners of the emmy's and the digest awards. With biograhies on certain soap opera legends and 46 years of Neilsen ratings of all the soaps. It is absolutely any soap opera fans dream.

Customer Reviews:
Great idea, terrible graphics. .......2007-03-02
I got tired of squinting at the tiny black and white diagrams, with the balls numbered in minute type. As these table diagrams are the entire point of the book, this is a fatal flaw.
Not for the intermediate player........2006-11-10
This book is about useless to the medium player.. this covers basics and most of the solutions are horrible.. i didnt like it at all.
Shot Making Patterns in Action!!!.......2006-04-01
This book helps me to solve every problems or puzzles I stumbled on every pool table. I apply every topic on this book as a "Shot Making Patterns" on every game I played or watched on live pool hall games or on every sport televised pool games.
On this type of sport any legal shots can win you the game but having the right "Shot Making Patterns" can make you a legend. That is why sometimes sports TV commentators or even fellow players criticized another player on their shot making approach.
Perceptive Analysis.......2004-07-23
When I was 10-17 years old, I was an avid pool player. I had a table at my house, and played 10 hours per day. Then college and family interfered and I put away the cue.
Back when I was a kid, I read the only books available then, by Mosconi and Hoppe as I recall.
Now, 40 years later, I bought a 9-ft.table and tried to improve my game. Today there is a plethora of books on pool. I have bought and read, word-by-word, probably 8 books on the subject during the last two years.
This book, however, is in a class by itself. It is a great strategy book. If in reading the book, you read the diagram (while simultaneously blocking the suggested course of action below) and attempt to answer the question: "How would I play this?", it is extremely instructive.
The author is not always right, but he makes you consider the multiple options. This forces you to think.
Of all the books I have read in the last two years, this is the only one which I felt merited a review. I am a straight pool shooter, but this book covers also 8-ball and 9-ball strategy well.
I strongly recommend this book. The other great books I have read are "Advanced Pool", the 99 best shots book, and "Play your Best Straight Pool". All are classics.
Someone suggested also re-reading billiard books. This is very helpful, as retention is limited when evaluating complex strategies and shooting methods. I also enjoy very much my subscription to Billiard Digest. I save the articles.
Spyder (so named because he gets in and out of small spaces)
It's ok for beginners.......2001-08-13
I only bought this book for the 9-ball section and was left a little disappointed. The book is aimed more at begineers so in that respect it is OK. I found that some of the diagrams did not really match the shot suggested and there was one mistake on page 106. That said this book is cheap and if you don't just play 9-ball then it could be worth the investment.
