Book Description
A hilarious and tough–minded guide to winning the war of contemporary life.
We live in a vicious, highly competitive workplace environment, and things aren't getting any better. Jobs are few and far between, and people aren't any nicer now than they were when Ghengis Khan ran around in big furs killing people in unfriendly acquisitions. For thousands of years, people have been reading the writings of the deeply wise, but also extremely dead Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu, who was perhaps the first to look on the waging of war as a strategic art that could be taught to people who wished to be warlords and other kinds of senior managers.
In a nutshell, Sun Tzu taught that readiness is all, that knowledge of oneself and the enemy was the foundation of strength and that those who fight best are those who are prepared and wise enough not to fight at all. Unfortunately, in the current day, this approach is pretty much horse hockey, a fact that has not been recognized by the bloated, tree–hugging Sun Tzu industry, which churns out mushy–gushy pseudo–philosophy for business school types who want to make war and keep their hands clean.
Sun Tzu was a Sissy will transcend all those efforts and teach the reader how to make war, win and enjoy the plunder in the real world, where those who do not kick, gouge and grab are left behind at the table to pay the tab. Students of Bing will be taught how to plan and execute battles that hurt other people a lot, and advance their flags and those of their friends, if possible. All military strategies will be explored, from mustering, equipping, organizing, plotting, scheming, rampaging, squashing and reaping spoils.
Every other book on The Art of War bows low to Sun Tzu. Weᱥ going to tell him to get lost and inform our readers how real war is currently conducted on the battlefield of life.

Customer Reviews:
You need Yinyang. You need Bing........2007-09-14
I think the one-star reviewers are missing the joke here. For those of us who read the back page of Fortune first, Gil Schwartz's Stanley Bing is the thing. His irreverent brand of humor is always spot on. His writing is crisp and well-constructed (you expected anything less from CBS' Head of PR?). His humor is biting, yet very smart, witty and delightfully unexpected.
Here's one example of many from the book - one of Bing's stock-in-trade tricks are his faux charts and tables. In one table, he reviews Warriors and their Actions. The table starts off like this:
Warrior - Action
------------------------
Moses - Parted Red Sea, made flood
Pharaoh - Drove into the flood
Howell Raines - Flooded the Zone
That's just a wonderfully witty free-association getting from Moses to Howell Raines. The book is filled with brilliant set pieces like that. If you love the Bing columns, you'll love the book. Think of them as extended columns. Bing fans are legion. His books deliver the goods.
This book should be in the section under Jokes.......2007-08-17
The most infamous chapter in the book is "Finding your Button". Like some Lucas Arts movie, tap into to Dark Side mentality. Use your anger to win Bing wants you to promote your anger, mangify it into unstoppable rage! He advocates using alcohol Vodka, Gin and scotch to enhance your anger. I found Bings book appalling and histerical.
In my youth I had some martial arts training and to tell you the truth, I would gladly take on an rage induced drunk any day over a cool headed calculating killer. If the purpose of this chapter was ment to induce rage induced laughter... Bing has accomplished his goal, hahahaha
just brillant!.......2007-07-27
This book reflect the business enviroment and the leader with emotional inteligence or not (this is the latest fasion aboout management), still has the same brutal essence. Stanley Bing gives a look with humour and laughting about it.
What? .......2007-06-25
First I abhor the very Idea that you can compare War with the business environment. Second if your going to make it you can at least be clear which he was not. I am glad I only borrowed the book.
Worthless.......2007-06-24
Another bonehead who knows all about war but never actually spent a minute actually fighting one.

Book Description
n the course of making nearly 400 films over the past 50 years, "Stan Brakhage" became synonymous with independent American filmmaking, particularly its avant-garde component. This major collection of writings draws primarily upon two long out-of-print books--Metaphors on Vision and Brakhage Scrapbook. Brakhage examines filmmaking in relation to social and professional contexts, the nature of influence and collaboration, the aesthetics of personal experience, and the conditions under which various films were made. Brakhage discusses his predecessors and contemporaries, relates film to dance and poetry, and in "A Moving Picture Giving and Taking Book" provides a manual for the novice filmmaker. Lectures, interviews, essays, and manifestos document Brakhage's personal vision and public persona.
Customer Reviews:
the best brakhage book.......2002-04-13
After plodding through Brakhage's "Metaphors on Vision" as well as "the Brakhage Scrapbook" during my research on this amazing filmmaker, I was thankful to find Brakhage's most interesting and significant writings collected into this single volume. It truly is the "essential brakhage." Personally, I don't really think that much of what else remains in those OTHER two volumes (all those difficult writings and collections of artist's notes and confounding letters full of puns)is worth the reading effort for most readers.

Book Description
Speak It Louder: Asian Americans Making Music documents the variety of musics-from traditional Asian through jazz, classical, and pop-that have been created by Asian Americans. This book is not about "Asian American music" but rather about Asian Americans making music. This key distinction allows the author to track a wide range of musical genres. Wong covers an astonishing variety of music, ethnically as well as stylistically: Laotian song, Cambodian music drama, karaoke, Vietnamese pop, Japanese American taiko, Asian American hip hop, and panethnic Asian American improvisational music (encompassing jazz and avant-garde classical styles). In Wong's hands these diverse styles coalesce brilliantly around a coherent and consistent set of questions about what it means for Asian Americans to make music in environments of inter-ethnic contact, about the role of performativity in shaping social identities, and about the ways in which commercially and technologically mediated cultural production and reception transform individual perceptions of time, space, and society. Speak It Louder: Asian Americans Making Music encompasses ethnomusicology, oral history, Asian American studies, and cultural performance studies. It promises to set a new standard for writing in these fields, and will raise new questions for scholars to tackle for many years to come.

Customer Reviews:
awesome tricks with ordinary cards.......2007-09-13
this book along with fulves first one are staples in my magic. The tricks will leave your audience amazed especially because you can use a borrowed ordinary deck of cards. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves magic.
Excelent choice.......2005-12-23
I actually prefer this book to the first one. If you have any doubt about the effects in this book just learn the very first trick. I've used it for years and it just knocks people off their feet. Now, I do a lot of sleight of hand magic but a trick doesn't have to be difficult to be good. It's the crowd response that counts.
Like most of these Dover magic books, there are some real stinkers in there. But if you pick and choose you can find some real gems.
This is an excelent book for a young magician just starting out. It's a good choice overall.
Good Beginner Book.......2005-11-23
All of Karl Fulves books are good for beginning magicians. When you read the effects they seem very simplistic, but with good presentations everything is very usable material. As a professional magician I am often asked where to start learning effects and this would be a good place.
Santiago
(...)
Another great book!.......2002-04-07
This is another really fine book of material for the average magician. Much is from 'Pallbeares Review', a magazine published by the author, and now considered one of the best sources for excellent material.
Many of the effects in this book are mathematical, and will fool most people, including magicians. The nice part is that you don't have to understand the mathematics, or why it works, to be able to do it. All that is required is attention to detail and good audience management. For that reason, the magician-to-be should be at least 12 years old, although some of the tricks could be done by someone who is younger.
Never get Self Working books.......2001-06-24
I have wasted hours and hours reading these selfworking books and have learned ONE trick which is foolproof and i like greatly. All the other tricks are so easy to figure out or mathematical which is not very impressive. It is in these type books that mathematical tricks that have ruined card magic are learned. I used to think card magic ... until finally I saw some good card tricks. All the goodcard tricks i have ever seen require sleights, such as the glide, double lift, false shuffles, or else need gimmmicks that can be examined like the short card and stripper deck. These self working books have tricks without sleights or gimichs. Good card tricks don't work if there isn't sleights or examinable genius gimmicks. So don't waste your money on these over priced books

Book Description
Five keys to creating authentic, distinctive work, whether you are a student, professional or simply love making films on your own
For Creative Filmmaking from the Inside Out, three professors at the renowned University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television interviewed fifteen outstanding filmmakers, then distilled their insights into the "Five I's" of creativity. Learn how to:
Uncover your unique creative voice (Introspection)
Work from real-life observations and experience (Inquiry)
Draw on your nonconscious wells of creativity (Intuition)
Strengthen your creative collaborations (Interaction)
Communicate at the deepest level with your audience (Impact)
This comprehensive approach provides practical exercises that will enrich and transform your work, whether you are looking for a story idea, lighting a set, editing a scene or selecting a music cue.
The participating filmmakers, who have collectively won or been nominated for 39 Oscars and 27 Emmys, are:
Anthony Minghella, writer-director (The English Patient); Kimberly Peirce, writer-director (Boys Don't Cry); John Lasseter, writer-director-producer (Toy Story); John Wells, writer-producer (ER); Hanif Kureishi, writer (My Beautiful Laundrette); Pamela Douglas, writer (Between Mother and Daughter); Renee Tajima-Pe?a, director-producer (My America...or, Honk If You Love Buddha); Ismail Merchant, producer (The Remains of the Day); Jeannine Oppewall, production designer (L.A. Confidential); Conrad L. Hall, cinematographer (American Beauty); Kathy Baker, actor (Picket Fences); Walter Murch, sound designer-editor (Apocalypse Now); Lisa Fruchtman, editor (The Right Stuff); Kate Amend, editor (Into the Arms of Strangers); and James Newton Howard, composer (The Sixth Sense).
Customer Reviews:
An inspiration for teachers and students.......2003-12-24
I teach a seminar for teenagers in digital video. When I started designing the curriculum, it was mostly a "how-to" kind of thing. After reading this book, I changed the whole focus of the seminar. I asked the kids to look inside themselves and think about what they, personally, had to say. I said, "You are like kids who have been given a big box of crayons. Do you want to scribble on the wall, or do you want draw something special from your heart?" When they turned in their treatments for their video projects, they had taken the ideas of this book to heart.
This book should be required reading for anyone who teaches filmmaking or is starting out as a filmmker. It will get them on the right track!
Creative Filmmaking From The Inside Out.......2003-05-27
"Creative Filmmaking From The Inside Out," is a brilliant book! This book utilizes industry experts, who through their own experiences and examples, explain the creative process of filmmaking from concept though completion.
At the end of each chapter, the authors outline suggestions and exercises to evoke the reader's own creativity and abilities.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is either interested in filmmaking or is already involved in a film career, as it is always fascinating to see how successful people approach their own creative problems. Creativity is the one commodity which Hollywood is always looking for, but for which there are no formulas.
Inspiring!.......2003-05-06
Inspiring! This book reminds you that the most important thing you have to contribute as an artist is already within you. Essential reading for anyone in any creative endeavor. Buy this book and fly!
A fantastic, completely original approach.......2003-02-28
This book is a hybrid of interview collections and workbook exercises, designed to help filmmakers with their creative processes, not using the dumbed-down how-to-manual approach that so many filmmaking books employ, but in an intelligent and subtle way that engages and challenges the reader. These authors have assembled a formidable list of filmmakers -- the brains and souls behind The English Patient, Toy Story, E.R., Boys Don't Cry, many more -- and asked them more than the usual-suspect kind of questions, and by doing so have managed to go deeply into the creative process. The book interweaves the interviews with anecdotes, proverbs, and a group of creativity exercises which are several levels above the kind of artists' self-help books that have sometimes insulted our intelligence in the past. Ever wonder how Anthony Minghella thought of the opening shot for The English Patient? Or how Merchant Ivory get those stellar casts? This book actually tells you things you want to know, and then challenges you to go out and make a movie.

Book Description
Luis Buñuel was one of the true creators of the modern cinema. He made over 30 films, working in France, Republican Spain, the United States (at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and in Hollywood), and Mexico, where he died in 1983. Buñuel's films are both subtle and shocking, as deceptively simple as they are rich in incident and striking in the power of their imagery. Inflected by Surrealism, informed by realism, and mediated by the logic of dreams, Buñuel's cinema is astonishingly singular.
This book, originally published in Spanish and French, is now presented in a bilingual Spanish/ English edition. Illustrations include documentary photographs as well as over 350 film stills, many in color, from works ranging from his first, shocking Surrealist collaboration with Salvador Dalí, Un Chien Andalou (1929), to Belle de Jour (1966), The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). Including the most thorough chronology, filmography, and bibliography available, this is the ultimate book on Buñuel.
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT BOOK ON THE GENIUS NAMED BUNUEL.......2003-06-14
This book is a must for anyone interested in Bunuel, or brilliant filmmaking. Filled with beautiful images from Bunuel's films and of the director himself. Great interviews with those who worked with the great man: Rey, Denevue, Carriere, and others. A wealth of information and artifacts covering all 83 years of Bunuel's life. A must. Book comes in two languages (English and Spanish), that mirror each page. An incredible piece of publishing.
