I've always believed in fairies.......2000-05-31

The fairy world according to Tom Cross is one of exquisite beauty. With his vivid imagination and talent for creating richly detailed illustrations, Mr. Cross took me on an intriguing tour of a garden inhabited by a variety of tiny winged characters whose personalities and wardrobes harmonize with their floral counterparts. His fairies portray innocence, curiosity, contentment, wonder, joy and whimsy. The simple eloquence of the accompanying poetry by Constance Barkley Lewis strengthened my wish that such a world exists. I can no longer work in my garden without searching for evidence of fairies among my flowers. Whether it's a freshly scrubbed ladybug, the tiny silhouette of a fiddle player, or a sleeping infant wrapped in a bud, my garden will never be the same.

I found this book delightful to look at. Tom Cross is a very talented illustrator. Constance Lewis' poetry is fun to read as well...; I would definitely recommend this book.

I find myself totally entraced by CMB's renditions of Mother Nature and HER kind. The detail of CMB's Secret Garden and what thrives within does leave me in awe. I just sit back, relax and appreciate....

This is a beautiful book of some of the most enjoable art dealing with the enchanted realm. I found his artwork originally on greeting cards and was exstatic to see it collected in a wonderful book for coffee table viewing. enjoyable everday!@

Laugh Out Loud.......2007-01-19

I bought the book for my father who luckily already had it and gave it to me. Makes you really remember what it was like being a kid playing outside...yes, I actually did laugh out loud - over and over! My 8 year old son wants me to read him the short story "The Two-Wheel ATV" repeatedly.

Some of the funniest outdoor yarns ever written.......2006-08-12

A fine and pleasant misery is a collection of twenty eight of Pat McManus's early humor articles, most or all of which were written when he was writing for Field and Stream. He now writes for Outdoor life and when I receive my monthly issue of this publication in the mail the first place I always turn is to "The Last Laugh," but I still feel that the best of his stories were these earlier ones.

Some of the tales contained in this book such as The Modified Stationary Panic and Shooting the Chick-a-nout Narrows I have read ten times and laughed aloud each time. The way McManus relates to outdoor situations in his exaggerated manner will touch the funny bone of anyone who has ever spent time outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping or simply recalling their misadventures in the ignorance of youth.

McManus is a master at turning frightening and potentially dangerous situations into some of the funniest and most timeless stories ever written. In my opinion Patrick F. McManus is the best outdoor humor writer since Corey Ford.

Even though this was McManus' first book of humor, it may have been his best. No they are all great, but "A Fine and Pleasant Misery" is close to the top. Stories about 'the modified stationary panic', 'Grogan's war surplus store', and 'shooting the chick-a-nout narrows will keep you rolling on the floor in uncontrollable laughter. McManus has a special way of leading you up to (what you think is the punch line), but then plunging deeper into an even funnier event of the story.

Good But Bad.......2005-05-13

This book is a good book for anyone that loves the outdoors and is somewhat older in age. It really just one big satire on camping that people do in the now. I think I am a little too young for this book, and I dont like camping or reading that much. It is easy reading and funny in parts.

Fine and Pleasant Misery -No misery but plenty fine.......2005-01-11

This book should be read by every grown up boy and girl who did back yard camping, any other camping and had childhood friends with small fences between yards and crotchety old sales clerks. It will send you back to your childhood and having you laughing at every page. The imagery is classic and complete. Every word counts. It is hilarious.

I haven't red many books, But this is one of the best i've read. It's a book I can relate to living in Idaho and all. You've got to read this book.

Spikes Lee's gotta have it is an essential book for independent filmmakers. It's a book in three parts. The first part begins with an interview of Spike lee By Nelson George sometime after SGHI premiered and he became a big shot. But the second part is the most appealing. It is the production diary in which Spike goes into complete detail how he got she's gotta have it made. The Diary is from the intitla idea to postproduction. It's filled with loads of insights into the struggles he was up against. In fact it's so indepth he even mentiones when his heat and lights go out. Then finally theres the script, which is like the icing on the cake. Hard to find but worth it because you really get to understand how he works and how he got to where he is. Essential!

Great crosswords for novices.......2006-01-02

First off, I will say that I casually do crosswords. I do the New York Times most Mondays and some Tuesdays as they easier than their mid- to late-week counterparts. The New York Times crossword puzzles get increasingly more difficult each day starting on Monday. I am not a super solver, but enjoy working through these puzzles and ones from other newspapers when able.

This collection has crosswords that were originally printed on both Mondays and Tuesdays. The puzzles were just challenging enough for my skill level and knowledge level, but easy enough that I could make considerable progress on the puzzles. I found this book a great way to pass some time while on breaks at work or while watching reruns on television. There are 130 puzzles in this collection so needless to say this book can keep you busy for quite some time. I recommend this book for people who enjoy the thrill of solving crossword puzzles while still being challenged some. These puzzles are not difficult, but they are not a piece of cake, either. Hard-core solvers will probably not find much enjoyment in these puzzles.
