Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-09-12
This book is very informative and it tries to explain so that there is not much confusion after looking it over.
Beautiful art.......2007-08-23
Loved this book for my Art class. I didn't think I would like the class, fell in love with art, and even kept the book afterwards instead of selling it.
Comprehensive.......2007-02-16
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to better themselves in the region of art history knowledge and the ability to evaluate art's content as well. It was well worth buying and compliments any classes orientated towards the subject...maybe would even overshadow the required text.
Very interesting pictures.......2006-12-07
I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.
good transaction.......2005-10-06
Smooth transaction, book in great condition, very pleased and would do business with again.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Study Guide.......2007-06-20
This book was recommended to me by an art teacher and it is excellent, showing a chronological history of art with great images. A great reference.
My favorite art book. .......2005-05-09
Gardner's seperates the chapters in this book into regions, cultures and era's.
It includes cultural context informaion essential to understanding art and architecture. There are two ways to explore a piece of art: (1) analyzing the technique and (2) understanding the purpose. Like modern day song lyrics, many pieces of art and architecture were created for some type of political purpose. This book not only discusses the technological advancements in art and architecture, but shows the influences behind the creation of the pieces.
Love this book.......2001-05-22
I let someone borrow my ninth edition and my friend lost it. So I got the tenth edition. I love it. It gives breif history on the popular artists. It gives enough background so you are able to use it for references. I'm not an art major, but I really love the fact that it compiles many artists together. I was at the bookstore and I was looking at individual artist's books. That was when I realized how much I love this book. All the great stuff are in here.
I was introduced by my art history class. But now it's a hobbie to just read up on it.

Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr: Affirmations for Cynics
ASIN: 044669231X |
Book Description
From the Grammy-nominated star of Saturday Night Live and his equally talented sister comes a hysterically cynical look at life through a glass half empty. IHATETHISPLACEis the book for anyone who's ever tired of crossing to the sunny side of the street, looking for that elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, or reading self-help books that are meant to bring peace and prosperity. Guaranteed to shatter illusions, extinguish all hope, and keep the jaded and the disgruntled laughing all the way, it is filled with such daily 'affirmations' as 'If you don't have anything nice to say, welcome to the club,' and advice like 'Knock, and the door shall be slammed in your face.' Rife with the wit and wisdom of Jimmy Fallon and his sister Gloria, this book promises to tickle the funny bone of the pessimist in everyone.

Help for the Hopeless.......2007-01-10
My cousin was feeling down after a house fire, and requested this book. It was her first good laugh in a long time. Well worth the money!
It's pretty good........2006-03-25
I laughed at this book..it has the biting sarcasm that Jimmy Fallon is really good at, that not everyone understands. I liked a lot of the phrases in here..but I wish it was longer. The pages have about one sentence per page..so the price is kind of high for it. (I still bought it...but..) this is a book mainly for the fans-or someone who wants a quick laugh. If you don't like Jimmy..save your money.
Totally not worth the money.......2005-08-31
Totally not worth the money. The book is marginally amusing and not worth even the two minutes it takes to read through it. Save your money or buy it for a dime at my next garage sale.
Save your money.......2005-01-18
Seriously, somebody is padding these reviews, because there is no way that anybody in their right mind would be happy about paying $8+ for this book.
I adore Jimmy Fallon, so I really wanted to like this book, but it's just a completely unfunny version of Jack Handy's thoughts. At half the price, I might have given it 2 stars.
Pure Jimmy.......2004-07-06
This was a great book and would recommend it to anyone who likes Jimmy Fallon. I love his style of humor and it is evident on every hilarious page. I just wish the book was longer!

Book Description
"This is a deftly-written, insightful and thought-provoking text which seeks to illuminate key features of the Zapatista rebellion."
Development and Change
"This book, like none other that I know, will move the dialogue about the Zapatista movement into the arena of serious political and social thought, where its critique of modernity and globalization constitutes a major case study."
Gary H. Gossen, Julian Steward Professor of Social Science and Dean of Academic Affairs, Deep Springs College
To many observers in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mexico appeared to be a modern nation-state at last assuming an international role through its participation in NAFTA and the OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development). Then came the Zapatista revolt on New Year's Day 1994. Wearing ski masks and demanding not power but a new understanding of the indigenous peoples of Mexico, Subcomandante Marcos and his followers launched what may be the first "post" or "counter" modern revolution, one that challenges the very concept of the modern nation-state and its vision of a fully assimilated citizenry.
This book offers a new way of understanding the Zapatista conflict as a counteraction to the forces of modernity and globalization that have rendered indigenous peoples virtually invisible throughout the world. Placing the conflict within a broad sociopolitical and historical context, Nicholas Higgins traces the relations between Maya Indians and the Mexican state from the conquest to the presentwhich reveals a centuries-long contest over the Maya people's identity and place within Mexico. His incisive analysis of this contest clearly explains how the notions of "modernity" and even of "the state" require the assimilation of indigenous peoples. With this understanding, Higgins argues, the Zapatista uprising becomes neither surprising nor unpredictable, but rather the inevitable outcome of a modernizing program that suppressed the identity and aspirations of the Maya peoples.

More than a thousand quotes.......2003-07-16
Sheila Anderson's QUOTABLE MUSICIAN offers quotes and vignettes from a range of musical genres, from rock to classical to hip hop music. More than a thousand quotes are accompanied by explanations of their origins, making for a title which goes beyond a quote bible to explore the insights into musicians and the music industry reflected in each saying.
Wonderful reading.......2003-05-08
This is a fun, yet provacative read. I recommend that anyone interested in music read this book, "The Quotable Musician: From Bach to Tupac". She covers the entire genre of music.
Insightful and amusing........2003-05-08
Ms. Anderson has compiled the best book of quotes that I have ever read. I hope that there'll be more to come.
What Musicians Say When They're Not Saying It with Music.......2003-05-02
What musicians say when they're not playing their instruments or singing their songs is shrewd, surprising, and provocative, and "The Quotable Musician" gives it to us straight up. Brava to Sheila E. Anderson for listening and for orchestrating this composition of musical wit and wisdom for us all to enjoy. Encore! Encore!

Customer Reviews:
Good book, poor opening.......2006-12-05
This book is good because: cover all lines with recent games, cover all strategies and tactics in this opening
with a lot of textual explanations. So if you really want to answer 1.d4,1.e4 or 1.Nf3 with 1...b6 GM Bauer
make perfect job and this book is must to have for you.
Why i don't like this opening: White have huge space and development advantage. This opening is not good
like surprise weapon because white, with normal developing moves can reach playable middlegame without
theory knowledge. On the other side black must be very well prepared to survive first 20 moves and it is
normal because black don't develop kingside pieces, so he will late with castling and general development
of course. So if 1...b6 is good than 1...g6 must be much better. And don't forget you can't play 1...b6 against everything!!! You can't play 1...b6 against 1.g3 and this is very important because white have a lot of
transposition possibilities after 1.g3 so you need to learn more theory, not just this book. If you want to play
same move against all white first moves I think 1...d6 is best.
So 5 star for book 3 star for opening.
Better than its reputation..........2006-11-02
I am rated 1950 uscf. Since I started playing this opening (and working with the book and fritz), I have a total tournament score of 3-2-2 with the opening, with both losses coming against stronger players (a 2350 and a 2020). I also have a nice miniature win with Black against a 2010 and one of the draws (against a 2100) would have been a win if I had not screwed up the endgame in time pressure.
My point is that the opening is absolutely fine for class players, and actually quite tricky. Even my loss against the 2350 was not due to the opening (I emerged into a BETTER midgame with Black!). I have seen some people complain that it is hard to find counterchances playing this defense, and I suppose that is true if your opponent knows EXACTLY the right line to play. Do you? Most lines enable Black to create sharp positions where the player who understands the position better should win.
Regardless, since the opening is good enough for 2600 players (even Kramnik has played it recently) for more than occassional outings, it is certainly good enough for me.
As for the book itself, it is very detailed and deep. The author plays the opening regularly, even against prepared opponents. The writing is entertaining and clear. Black has a lot of choices to make, but nonetheless, the author could do more in the way of a proffered basic tree of variations.
If you are willing to work, you can put a reliable weapon into your repertoire.
Dymanic non orthodox opening !!.......2006-02-20
If you want to open your game with a different approach, 1...b6 may be the opening you are looking for. The book is clearly divided in four parts : part 1 deals with 1. e4, b6. This is the old Owen defense, but the author makes it clear that with proper play by Black, White does not get an advantage or at the most get a sligth +. But I think that black is doing very well. Part 2 deals with 1. d4, b6, Part 3 with 1. c4, b6 and part 4 with 1. Nf3, b6. All those sections are very well covered with many games and good explanation. This book is very good and is deep in analysis. This is a must have if you are not a beginner but rather an advanced player who wants a different approach to chess opening. If you are like me and believe that any chess openings is good as long as you know how to play it, this book may be for you. If you like more classic approach to chess opening, stay away from this book. Overall this one of the best written book on chess opening that I have. Very good.

As a social science researcher and an esteemed business consultant, Marcus Buckingham (First, Break All the Rules and Now, Discover Your Strengths) has spent considerable time studying the big picture. This wide-angle approach led him to an unexpectedly narrow conclusion: There is a core concept to even the most complex topic. What he has discovered in The One Thing You Need to Know is that single "controlling insights" exist for a whole range of situations, and when properly applied, can encourage exponential improvement and lead to precise action and results. In applying this concept to managing, leading, and individual performance he has pinpointed the single element necessary for achieving success in each of these three key positions.
Buckingham acknowledges the subtleties of the topic and his goal is "not to make these subjects simpler, merely clearer." And what could be clearer than one thing? The challenge lies in filtering out the nonessential matters and distinguishing "between what is merely important and what is imperative" in order to produce the greatest and most far-reaching effects. In offering advice on how to do this he also details the three things you need to learn about a person to manage them effectively, explains why a lack of balance is a good thing, shows how to identify your own strengths and weaknesses, and discusses which personality traits all great leaders must possess.
Clearly written, informative, and enjoyable, the book aims to motivate readers to act--not just think--differently by providing concrete examples and specific lessons. And it need not be confined to the office--the concepts outlined in these pages can help people feel more fulfilled and productive in all aspects of life. --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description
Following the success of the landmark bestsellers First, Break All the Rules and Now, Discover Your Strengths, Marcus Buckingham offers a dramatically new way to understand the art of success.
With over 1.6 million copies of First, Break All the Rules (co-authored with Curt Coffman) and Now, Discover Your Strengths (co-authored with Donald O. Clifton) in print, Cambridge-educated Buckingham is considered one of the most respected business authorities on the subject of management and leadership in the world. With The One Thing You Need to Know, he gives readers an invaluable course in outstanding achievement -- a guide to capturing the essence of the three most fundamental areas of professional activity.
Great managing, leading, and career success -- Buckingham draws on a wealth of applicable examples to reveal that a controlling insight lies at the heart of the three. Lose sight of this "one thing" and even the best efforts will be diminished or compromised. Readers will be eager to discover the surprisingly different answers to each of these rich and complex subjects. Each could be explained endlessly to detail their many facets, but Buckingham's great gift is his ability to cut through the mass of often-conflicting agendas and zero in on what matters most, without ever oversimplifying. As he observes, success comes to those who remain mindful of the core insight, understand all of its ramifications, and orient their decisions around it. Buckingham backs his arguments with authoritative research from a wide variety of sources, including his own research data and in-depth interviews with individuals at every level of an organization, from CEO's to hotel maids and stockboys.
In every way a groundbreaking book, The One Thing You Need to Know offers crucial performance and career lessons for business people at all career stages.

Great Wisdom.......2007-09-16
I found Marcus Buckingham's wisdom about great management and leadership to be right on. Having worked in an environment that focused on people's weaknesses as an area for growth, this book was refreshing and pointed to the importance of developing talent and strengths. The examples are about well established people and very intriguing to study.
A promise kept.......2007-08-20
Every book holds a promise. This one holds 3 and keeps 4. Not a bad score.
The book shares with you the secrets of individual success, management, leadership, and successful relationships. Yes, you could wish Marcus threw in the secret of eternal youth - but, I guess, he is still working on it. Good luck, Marcus! Your audience awaits!
The One Review You Need to Read.......2007-07-27
How long should it take you to tell someone the ONE thing they need to know? A whole book? Mr. Buckingham is a promoter - a salesman. Nothing wrong with that but you are not going to achieve enlightenment by reading it. This is just a generation X Zig Zigler. Don't be pathetic and think that a self-help book is going to change your life. That only comes through reflection and personal growth. So, now for free I am going to tell you the one thing you need to know AND I am even going to give you two versions of it:
Version One: Jesus "Do into others what you would have others do into you."
Version Two: Hillel "What is hateful to you do not do to your fellow man."
There are other versions.
It is called the Ethic of Reciprocity. All else is commentary. Now go study.
In Support of the Revolution.......2007-06-02
We've broken the rules and discovered our strengths, now Marcus Buckingham gets to the point by revealing the controlling insights for great managing, great leading, and sustained individual success. In The One Thing You Need to Know, Buckingham provides compelling theories that support his ongoing "strengths revolution." Just as he did in previous books, Buckingham challenges us to "buck" the system of traditional management techniques by encouraging us to identify the strengths in our selves and employees, and cultivate those strengths.
Buckingham introduces the concept of imbalance, suggesting that we stop striving for perfection in ourselves and others. This is counter-productive asserts Buckingham. Instead, we as managers and leaders need to identify our flaws, and then find our "Madison." Buckingham uses the example of the Thomas Jefferson-James Madison team to illustrate his point. Jefferson, a conceptual strategist, loathed public speaking and debate. Conversely, Madison enjoyed debate and his practical, methodical style was effective in dealing with Congress. Each other's strengths complemented the other's weaknesses. Buckingham's theory appears to support a growing trend, as similar concepts have been written about recently in professional journals such as Harvard Business Review's "In Praise of the Incomplete Leader" (February 2007).
If Buckingham appears to get side-tracked at times it's worth the indulgence. Weaving stories and examples into sometimes mundane research and clinical findings helps to support his concepts, and applies his theories to real-life situations. He doesn't just use the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs-types in his examples. Sure, these guys are in there, but Buckingham includes historical figures and average "Joes" to prove the universality of his theories. He admittedly gets off track in the section "What is the One Thing you need to know about happy marriage?" Although far removed from the business world, this section is worth the detour for anyone who is married, contemplating marriage, or in a committed relationship.
Those of us who have ever felt bored, frustrated, or stifled in our careers are now armed with the knowledge and encouragement to make the right decisions and take actions that will best serve our employees, organization, and self. In fact, the biggest challenge may be having the patience to wait for the corporations we serve to join the "revolution."
Excellent.......2007-04-11
Excellent material. Very well structured and has all the new ideas and approaches for leadership and management. It defines both concepts with good examples and makes it easy to understand the difference between leadership and management. I enjoyed every page.
