This book was not that informative to a person with even a small knowledge of art. The title makes it sound like there is a long list of unique and fun jobs, but more than half the book is basics about how to find and apply for a job- any job, not a great job. It only talks about 5 BASIC paths that any idiot would already know about. If you need to know the BASICS get this book.

From Extremely Funny to Extremely Rude.......2007-08-14
First, let me say that I love Wanda Sykes. She's a hoot, but parts of her book just didn't come out the way I think she intended it. I can laugh at tasteless jokes and dialogue, which explains why I could sit through movies such as the American Pie trilogy to Wedding Crashers with my father. However, I couldn't seem to find the humor in some of her monalogue on whites vs. blacks and the strange rant on gastric bypass. Overall, I would recommend this to someone who wants a quick read and needs a few laughs. Wanda doesn't disappoint, but remember the title when you come across some of those sections that seem outright offensive.
Good Ol' Raunchy Fun!.......2007-02-03
I think the book does cover some of her stand up stuff, but she addresses a lot of points with some interesting points of view on some political issues.
If you're easily offended by some raunchy obscene humor -- this book is not for you.
If you have watched Wanda over the years and have gotten to know her style and her comedic sense of humor then you will enjoy this book... I surely didnt mind rereading some of her good stuff -- recalling it made me giggle.
I enjoyed this book for the most part.
Bust a gut.......2006-11-11
I found this book on an airplane and could not put it down. Everyone around me was wondering what was making me laugh so hard! I had tears streaming down my face and my sides ached from laughter. I couldn't wait to pass it along to all my friends. They had the same reaction. We became fans of WANDA! Shortly after we went to see her stand-up routine, but it wasn't half as funny as this book. I keep it on hand when I need a good laugh.

What makes Wanda Sykes so incredibly funny is that she is so incredibly smart! She is a terrific blend of "street" savvy and insightful, sophisticated intellectual. She really knows what's going on in so many arenas. She defies stereotypes, and clearly comfortable in her skin. She takes on sexual topics without being disgustingly filthy like many other black commediennes. She's politically savvy, and hopefully gets people to think critically about some of the foolishness they are being fed by leaders and the media. And I can't understnad why Bill Maher hasn't had her on his show!
Lots of recycled material.......2006-01-25
There were laughs in the book. Overall I was disappointed that so much of it was recycled from her stand up shows. If she is going to expect people to lay down money for a book, the least she could do is come up with some new material. As it is, the book is barely 200 pages and a good number of them are blank except for a section number. Her rants on politics were not funny.

I think the book is very well written even though there are other texts out there. It is a great refrence book for someone at the operational level of technical rescue. Plenty of illustrations and illustrations. I would recommend this book.

A friend mentioned Good to Great in a sermon and I thought it might be a worthwhile read for me as the executive director of a non-profit association facing the challenge of how take the organization to the next level.
I found the book fascinating and will share it with my Board of Directors as a roadmap for how we will move our organization from good to great.
The monograph provides a great overview of the concepts developed in the book and is of a very manageable length.
I would strongly recommend it to leaders of non-profits as a basis for a conversation about their organization making the great leap forward.

This is a great companion for Jim Collins, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't for anyone that works in the social sector. As an assistant principal in a large, suburban high school, this book helped to bring into focus the principles reviewed in Good to Great.
Great Principles make for Great Outcomes.......2007-09-04
The social sector does not need to be more business like; it needs to implement more great business principles tailored for the social entities economic engine - so says Collins in this 35 page, add-on for a future "Good to Great" update. In addition to tailoring some of the Great principles
* Define Great by calibrating success without business (monetary) metrics
* Lead thru a blend of personal humility and professional will to get things done within a diffuse power structure
* Get high quality people with a personal commitment to the cause on-board the bus
* Find the intersection of the social entity's Passion, Best at, and its Resource Engine
* Build brand recognition
to the specifics of the social entity, Collins suggests that the leadership principle of managing within a diffuse power structure is something for the business sector to learn; as business executives do not have the same concentration of pure executive power they once enjoyed.

Jim Collins is always spot on. The insights he presents are presented with such clarity and ease of reading that I look forward to anything he does. I use it as a key part of the extensive Strategic Visioning work I do.
