Never left my side.......2006-01-02
This book reveals many answers to the questions even I asked when I started my career in cartooning. The interviews and thoughts, efforts put in to this book is one reason why even after 16 years as a cartoonist I still enjoy being able to read through this book and get something out of it every time. This isn't just for those starting out, it's also a reminder for those in the industry.

Book Description
The ultimate meditation book, not to be grandiose...
Take a hilarious, healing journey with Stuart Smalley as he careens down the road to Recovery. For one entire year Stuart recorded an affirmation a day...except when he had taken to his bed (but that's Okay)...and the result is the most entertaining and indispensable meditation book ever.
From program wisdom (Denial Ain't Just a River in Egypt! December 1) to survival tips (When I Go Home to Visit My Family I Will Stay in a Motel! September 26) to some good sound practical advice (I am entitled to file for an Extension on my Income Taxes! April 15th), Stuart's affirmations will empower you!
Work, Friendship, Love, Spirituality, Codependency, Self-Esteem, Acceptance...Stuart deals with it all. And as you share his ups and downs, his triumphs and shame spirals, you will come to see the ultimate truth of Stuart's March 21st affirmation: Today I Will Laugh--At Least Once!
Customer Reviews:
I Wish I Had Read This Book Two Years Ago.......2005-09-27
I think it really would have helped. This book is supposed to be daily affirmations, but basically is Stuart's year long diary. He is a member of several 12 step programs, and has really learned a lot from them, and has made friends who also attend them. One thing he hasn't learned from these meetings is leave his extremely dysfunctional family alone and quit trying to solve their problems for them. What I like about his book:
Let go of the result.
If you're scared to do something, go ahead and do it, and you'll wish you'd done it a lot sooner.
What I thought was improbable:
Stuart taking multiple plane flights to visit his family.
Stuart going to bed for weeks at a time with Oreos, Hydrox, etc.
Stuart never has any day-to-day problems that the rest of us have.
His friends always have plenty of time on their hands to try to get him to get out of his bed and open up his door.
Andrea losing 140 lbs in about 10 months.
But other than that, this book has a lot to say. Franken is quite knowledgeable about codependency. It's worth reading, but you must have a sense of humour.
I Can Enjoy This Book.......2003-05-04
I have read all of Al Franken's books up to this point with the exception of this one. I had been a fan of Franken since his days of Saturday Night Live, particularly his Stuart Smalley character. This book further demonstrates the depth and intelligence of his humor.
The book is very similar to the movie based on it (Stuart Saves His Family). Having already seen the movie, I was anticipating certain events in the book once I started reading. Despite my previous knowledge, I found the book to be laugh out loud funny. The humor of the Stuart Smalley character is based in him trying to help out others, yet being a mess himself as is demonstrated by his membership in several support groups.
Even people passing through my home who picked this book up from my coffee table and read a few pages have enjoyed what they read. It is not hard to get the joke. This is a easy, but fun read.
Laugh out loud funny - great gift for people in Recovery.......2002-05-09
When Stuart Smalley first came out I didn't quite see the appeal. Now with 5 years in The Program, I finally get the joke. I have lent this book to a lot of folks in my home group and we all agree that it's pretty impossible not to laugh out loud while reading it. What a funny, smart insightful man. Seriously one of the funniest books I've ever read, though I might not have "gotten it" without my familiarity with 12 step programs.
This Book is Funny No Matter What Mood I'm In.......2002-04-14
I keep this book right here beside me in my home office, so any time I need to get perspective on life I can open it to some random page and read one of Stuart's daily affirmations. Whether I'm in a good mood or feeling down, this book always picks me up! Thanks to Stuart, I now know that "I don't have to beat myself up", "I deserve good things", and "I refuse to live from crisis to crisis"! I have to keep reminding myself about that last one, because my computer connection keeps dropping out as I try to type this review.
I'M GOOD ENOUGH tells the story of how Stuart Smalley (a caring nurturer and a member of several twelve step programs, but not a licensed therapist) deals with his inner critic and his dysfunctional family through the pages of his daily journal. I won't give away the plot, but will just give you a hint that there are lots of ups and downs in Stuart's career and family which help him grow in unexpected ways (such as the day when he notes "This Time I Was in Bed for Only Five Days!")
If you ever need to laugh with love at life's foibles, this is the book for you! OK -- I'm not saying you HAVE to get this book, because then I would be telling you what to do. You are in control of your own life, and things are not black and white! So get this book if your feelings about how you feel about it feel right. I think you'll be glad you did!

Book Description
Here is the official companion to Francis Ford Coppola's masterful trilogy, revised and updated, and packed with more than 100 photographs.
The director was a renegade filmmaker who'd never made a profitable picture. The producer was hired because he could stay below budget. The star had a reputation for being difficult. A formula for disaster?
No, the makings of one of the greatest films of all time.
The Godfather Legacy explores the fascinating behind-the-scenes intrigue and uproar during the making of all three films:
- The clashes between Coppola and the studio chiefs during the filming of The Godfather, the pressurized production schedule, and the project's near cancellation
- The real story behind the cooperation of the Mafia in the creation of The Godfather
- The worldwide acclaim and stunning financial success following the release of The Godfather -- a triumph that set the stage for the film industry's renaissance
- The production of The Godfather Part II and the rise of Coppola, Al Pacino, and others to the loftiest heights of power in Hollywood
- The creation of The Godfather Part III two decades after the original film and the completion of video projects that unified the three films for the first time
Featuring production records, credits, reviews, and interviews with many of the principals involved, The Godfather Legacy is a rare and vivid peek into the making of three of the most compelling films in Hollywood history.

Instructions for maximum enjoyment: Buy, read, order Italian, and watch The Godfather. .......2007-01-31
Simply fantastic!
I picked up this book expecting to find exactly what I found: Jam-packed full of details available nowhere else. This book provides a fascinating behind the scenes look into one of the great movies of all time.
Reading the book is almost as if living through the production. Lebo's writing puts you right in the action and gives the reader new insights into what went into making the movie, relationships between those on set, and the creative vision (and struggles) that went into it all.
It is great to have this level of expertise at your finger tips while watching the real thing. I was amazed with all the behind-the-scene knowledge I had of each take and truly consider this an excellent read well worth my time. I highly recommend it.
Very disappointing.......2007-01-21
Just a waste of time and money for even the hardcore Godfather fan!!
A joy for "Godfather " fans..........2006-03-31
The Godfather Legacy is a great collection of behind the scene stories, rumors, cast interviews, and unpublished film photos. Everything a real fans of the Godfather trilogys wants.
The books delves very deep with the first Godfather movie. From its initial spark of an idea about a "mafia" film, (The word "mafia" is not allowed to be said anywhere in the film.) to the long, arduous process of finding a director and cast, to the many problems on set, to finally, it's raving success in the mainstream world and at the Academy Awards.
I am amazed how Francis Ford Coppola survived such an ordeal where he was continually threatened to be fired, and yet still turn out the epitome of gangster films. The casting of unfavorable actor Marlon Brando, as the aging Don Corleone, was an inspired choice. The casting of, yet unknown, Al Pacino, as the meek turned hardened crime boss Michael, was a fight from the very beginning, but proved to be the films star find.
Harlan Lebo's book speaks also of the 2nd and 3rd Godfather films, but not at length like he did the first film. That would be my only complaint. I wanted to really feel, and understand the difference between the first film, with the tremendous pressure Coppola felt directing, to the complete freedom he was given at doing the 2nd film, and his controversial choices in Godfather III. Hopefully, he'll come out with a more detailed book one day. Fingers crossed.
Psychological Thriller of all Time.......2004-06-27
Although it might be considered the most accurate, and perhaps the most thriling of anthologies on the Mafia crimestyle in life, the parts not covered well are the attitudes of the Mafia princesses, and spouses of those involved in relationships in the clan. While it need not be this clan, and could be any clan, the effects upon the lives of women subjected to the emotional deprivation of secular groups is substantial, and might be viewed under the parameters of those who live with narcissistic males, of any group, any ethnicity, and at any age. Because we don't tend to view action thrillers like this one as anything but entertainment, the real underlying important questions rarely get discussed, but could be, and might be of great benefit to those who witness the problems.
not a ripoff from the dvd bonus disc.......2004-03-10
The reader from Los Angeles is quite incorrect in saying this book was ripped off from the bonus disc in the Godfather dvd 3 pack. This was released in 1997 whereas the collection was released in 2001. So the author must obviously be psychic right?
That said, the book is wonderful. There's lots of behind the scenes info, beautiful photos and tidbits to notice in the films. It's a great companion with Amazon's suggested The Godfather Movies: A Pictorial History.
Book Description
Follow the Sacred Journey to Create One of the Lasting Musical Masterpieces of Our Time
Bob Marley is one of our most important and influential artists. Recorded in London after an assassination attempt on his life sent Marley into exile from Jamaica, Exodus is the most lasting testament to his social conscience. Named by Time magazine as “Album of the Century,” Exodus is reggae superstar Bob Marley’s masterpiece of spiritual exploration.
Vivien Goldman was the first journalist to introduce mass white audiences to the Rasta sounds of Bob Marley. Throughout the late 1970s, Goldman was a fly on the wall as she watched reggae grow and evolve, and charted the careers of many of its superstars, especially Bob Marley. So close was Vivien to Bob and the Wailers that she was a guest at his Kingston home just days before gunmen came in a rush to kill “The Skip.” Now, in The Book of Exodus, Goldman chronicles the making of this album, from its conception in Jamaica to the raucous but intense all-night studio sessions in London.
But The Book of Exodus is so much more than a making-of-a-record story. This remarkable book takes us through the history of Jamaican music, Marley’s own personal journey from the Trench Town ghetto to his status as global superstar, as well as Marley’s deep spiritual practice of Rastafari and the roots of this religion. Goldman also traces the biblical themes of the Exodus story, and its practical relevance to us today, through various other art forms, leading up to and culminating with Exodus.
Never before has there been such an intimate, first-hand portrait of Marley’s spirituality, his political involvement, and his life in exile in London, leading up to histriumphant return to the stage in Jamaica at the Peace Concert of 1978.
Here is an unforgettable portrait of Bob Marley and an acutely perceptive appreciation of his musical and spiritual legacy.
Customer Reviews:
The Book of Exodus:The Making and Meaning of Bob Marley and the Wailers' Album of the Century.......2007-01-16
Our daughter was very happy to receive the book. It was what she wanted for Christmas.
Present for my Marley-afficiando husband.......2006-12-23
He loves it. Said it had enough fresh-take or new info that it kept him interested and reading all the way through.
My added comment is he read it through a time of having to work 80-hr weeks, so it must be good.
Accurate Coverage of Mid 70s Kingston.......2006-08-22
Having spent much time in Kingston in the mid 1970s, this book accurately reflects the politics and gestalt of the time . Ms. Goldman's attention to geographical detail is one of the strong points of the book. The book is right on in terms of its intellectual context, as well as its more anecdotal style.Relly, this is one of the better books on Marley, Reggae, and Jamaica.
A MUST HAVE!.......2006-06-08
Simply put, this is a book full of indispensable knowledge. Vivien Goldman again (Soul Rebel-Natural Mystic)has put out a truly remarkable book about the great Bob Marley. This era in Bob's life has not been written about too much and Vivian recounts it with such fine details and first hand accounts that the reader can't help but to be extrememly thankful that she finally put it all on paper. The cover price alone is well worth it for the rare rare RARE picture of Bob with Claudie Massop, Tony Welch and Earl Wadley as they talked to Bob about the One Love Peace Concert.
Of all the books out there about Bob (and I have read just about every single one of them) this is without a doubt a true must have. Of the 50+ books written about Bob there are 7 must haves and this is one of them.
Music Writing At Its Best.......2006-06-05
It is convincingly argued that the pop album has become an effectively arcane form. But even in a digital age, certain albums continue to both define and transcend their creators. Sgt. Pepper, What's Going On, Astral Weeks, Blood On the Tracks... the list invites nerdish debate. But one title can never be excluded; Bob Marley and The Wailers' Exodus was the product of a specific time and place and remains the most extraordinary single work of the Third World's most extraordinary musical voice.
Vivien Goldman was one of the key writers during the Golden Age of British music journalism when the punk explosion inspired the intense gut-intellectual talents of the first post-sixties generation. Unlike many of her colleagues her love and understanding of black music has continually defined her work and The Book Of Exodus is perhaps the best thing she has done.
This is at once memoir, critical analysis and history. Vivien Goldman takes the reader into the studio as Exodus was created. A palpable sense of the immediacy of that process, the atmosphere (well fumigated with the herbsman's wares) and personalities involved come vividly to life through the eyes of the young fan-reporter. Most movingly, Goldman's own ability to connect her life as the North London-raised daughter of German-Jewish refugees from the Holocaust with the Trench Town experience that formed Bob Marley is at the heart of the book. This is no falsely crafted analogy. It is above all a spiritual link, the "Flash Of The Spirit" which has made the core African musical experience one of the world's most unifying cultural forces.
For anyone who wants to understand something of Marley's greatness and gentle charisma, Vivien Goldman shares her privileged experience of hanging with the man and his colleagues in both Jamaica and London. This was an artist whose words and music have inspired more people worldwide than maybe any other pop musician and yet the man who emerges here is a very real person living in a very real time. Goldman gives us a vivid sense of both.
Everyone with more than a passing interest in Marley and The Wailers should read this book. It will send you back to the music, reggae's shining hour, with renewed love and understanding.
Book Description
If you have any interest in poker or gambling, you will enjoy reading about the Tiltboys. Even casual poker fans will recognize Phil Gordon, the ringleader of the bunch, as the expert commentator on Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown." Imagine the guys from "Animal House" with high SAT scores. They are a bunch of buddies who went to Stanford together and began a weekly poker game that led to weekend trips to Las Vegas and, for a few of them, to a life of playing poker professionally. Phil Gordon made dot.com millions and is now living the good life in the poker world and on television. Perry Friedman won a World Series of Poker event a couple years ago. While Dave "Diceboy" Lambert is, according to the other Tiltboys, the luckiest human being on the planet. It's "Swingers"-meets-"Rounders." Read these true tales of gambling, friendship, and Wednesday night poker. These anecdotes are a testament to just how amusing a life devoted to excess and debauchery can be.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious, wonderful reading!.......2007-03-26
These guys are my heros! If you spend a night reading, it will feel like you're out on the town. I enjoy reading for recreational pleasure and for factual education. Most of the time reading is work. I blew threw this book in about 5 days! I've also made it required reading for all of my poker friends.
In reality, they are just a bunch of sick-smart guys (and gal) who love to play poker, gamble (yes, there IS a difference between the two!), and screw with each other. This book is a compilation of some of their shennanigans over the years. I'm sure some of their best material is in here. However, to really be a tiltboy, I'm sure this has to be an attitude, a way of life. I read somewhere that you should think of the guys in Animal House with an average IQ of 120. I'd say that this is a correct assessment. And I hope that someday that I will aspire well enough to have the honor of being called a Tiltboy.
Great reading!
This book is awful.......2007-03-23
I am sure this book would be very funny if you were a tiltboy or friend of the tiltboys. The tiltboys sound like a fun and smart bunch of people to hang around with. But I thought the book was a huge waste of time and money. The material in this book may be fit for a scrapbook or a home video but as a published work? No.
presto!.......2007-01-11
Great book about a regular Wednesday poker game and the characters involved with it. This book takes you through the trials and tribulations of the tilt boys from back rooms to fame and fortune, it's and entertaining read.
A book with a sly subliminal message.......2005-07-27
This book is a ripoff of the Anthony Burgess "A Clockwork Orange" novel with "tilt" being substituted for "ultra-violence". Yet, I thoroughly enjoyed every page with a smile on my face. But, I don't believe any of the stories about Perry.
Fast Times and Fast Friends.......2005-07-09
I just finished this lovely book. This is a book about friendship and shared life experiences, woven around poker and roshambo and the circle game. Once you understand the concept of "tilt" as a form of currency in the game of life (to be earned, spent, loved, leveraged and traded) you will ADORE every word of this funny, imaginative, entirely entertaining book. Kudos to Kim Scheinberg the editor. She did an admirable job.
I smiled from the first page to the last. I laughed out loud - a lot. I identified with the camaraderie of people making and cherishing lifelong friendships. Anyone who has ever had a shared life experience with even one close friend will enjoy this book. It made me jealous - I wished I had been a Tiltboy. But, more than mere jealousy, I increased the value I put on my own friendships with every page I turned. I hated to reach the end.
Enjoy!

Book Description
H.R. Pufnstuf, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost: For a generation of children growing up in the late sixties and early seventies, these were some of the most memorable shows on Saturday morning television. At a time when television cartoons had lost some of their luster, two puppeteers named Sid and Marty Krofft put together a series of shows that captivated children.
Using colorful sets and mysterious lands full of characters that had boundless energy, the Kroffts created a new form of children's television, rooted in the medium's earliest shows but nevertheless original in its concept. This work first provides a history of the Kroffts' pretelevision career, then offers discussions of their 11 Saturday morning shows. Complete cast and credit information is enhanced by interviews with many of the actors and actresses, behind-the-scenes information, print reviews of the series, and plot listings of the individual episodes. The H.R. Pufnstuf feature film, the brothers' other television work, and their short-lived indoor theme park are also detailed.
Customer Reviews:
A Critical Review of this Critical Study.......2007-06-06
I was expecting more pictures and interviews with the actors and others behind the scenes. This book had absolutely no photographs (other than the front cover). It gave quite a bit of background information on those involved with each show. That is to say at least in the form of their professional background. In fact, it was distracting to try to read. Everytime the author mentioned a person, he would give background accomplishments of that person. As I have a bit of ADD this proved to be distracting enough to draw my attention away from the topic.
If you are like me and you just want to hear some behind the scenes stories from those involved with these programs, if you want photographs, or if you like to read interviews, then this is probably not the book for you.
It is informative as it has information about each program along with statistics. It is just a bit more forensic than I desire.
It is also a bit pricey for a paperback.
An extra star for effort ..........1999-02-02
The catalog of North Carolina publishers McFarland and Company is a veritable goldmine of works on often neglected corners of history and popular culture. Despite their no-frills design and the sometimes variable quality of the writing therein, the characteristic thoroughness, ambition and enthusiasm of McFarland's publications typically makes them worth their understandably (for a small publisher printing small editions of highly specialized texts) steep prices. Hal Erickson's Sid and Marty Krofft: A Critical Study of Saturday Morning Children's Television, 1969-1993 is no exception. While Erickson's subtitle rather oversteps the actual content of the book--it is strictly limited to "Saturday Morning Children's Televison" Krofft style, and a truly "critical study" of the Krofft oeuvre wouldn't skip so gingerly over the relationship of "H.R. Pufnstuf" to Vietnam-era drug culture, or ignore entirely, say, the peculiar sexual politics of "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters" (Sigmund being seduced by his brother in drag? A camp genie shacking up with a runaway sea monster and a half-naked "nephew," both underage?) or the Kroffts' general subversion of the mythic American nuclear family (aunts, babysitters, robots, even, but where are the parents? Marshall disappeared after a season of "Land of the Lost," Big Daddy and Sweet Mama were just plain abusive)--it is nonetheless an invaluable source of information and insight for any Krofft fan. David Martindale's Pufnstuff and Other Stuff: The Weird and Wonderful World of Sid and Marty Krofft (q.v.) may be less pretentious (Erickson hasn't quite mastered the academic pop culture studies style he attempts to mimic, and is prone to annoying Britishisms), and, certainly, better-illustrated (apparently, McFarland either couldn't or wouldn't print even a single llustration in its offering), but Erickson's book more than complements it in its attention to the details, contexts, and significance of the Wonderful World of Sid and Marty Krofft. An extra star for effort ...
