Deceptive: Not the complete edition.......2007-09-06
[Added 9/07/2007] This review concerns the "Inspirio/Zondervan Miniature Edition" which is a hardback. Amazon has lumped this hardback edition with the full text hardback edition so the site does not indicate that this review does not concern the full hardback edition. Caveat Emptor
We ordered this book, thinking it was the complete edition of the book. Neither the Amazon page nor the book itself make it clear that it is merely an abridged version. The only way to tell is to note that this edition has 125 pages and a full sized edition has 200+ pages. Needless to say, we will be returning it to purchase the complete edition. I am looking forward to reading the content as I have heard good things about it.
Cute little item........2007-09-02
Be careful about your purchase. The one we acquired was a miniture version. The type was ok and you could read it, but the book was about 2" x 3". It was a miniture and not at all what we thought we were acquiring. We wanted the whole book. When ordering we did not notice that it was a miniture edition.
If you Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to get Out of the Boat (miniature edition).......2007-07-18
A nice, inspiring, easy-to-read but incomplete book, which contains a small portion of the original edition. The description should indicate, in addition to the dimensions of the book, that the full text is not included.
Cool little book, but spring for the full size.......2007-07-05
These miniature editions really are MINIATURE! So much so that handling them and the type size was not comfortable. I returned these and purchased the full size edition - much better! I am reading the full size one now - and it is excellent! The content of the book gets 5 stars! John Ortberg keeps his excellent sense of humor throughout the book, while still getting to the serious issues that will make even the most well adjusted person say - "Yep, I felt exactly like that!" I highly recommend this book to ANYONE, whether you think you have issues or not!
thought it was going to be a silly self-help book but...............2007-06-15
it is an awesome book. I'm even taking notes to use in my life with God. It is not in the least a silly little self-help book. There are strong messages to the believer in Christ. It is funny but the applications are sooooooooo Jesus! You will be challenged beyond your daily walk but with wisdom! This is not about jumping out and running but having permission from Christ to "jump and walk on the water"!

The best Christian writer of our day.......2007-02-01
It's funny -- I love James Taylor and I love John Ortberg. I think the commonality there is that they are such great wordsmiths. Very honest, plain-spoken, and yet so much is contained in so little said. Ortberg is not a poet, but he's able to see great truth in simple things.
If you avoid being confronted with truth, then avoid this book. But if you're ready to face it, then read it. He's the CS Lewis of our day.
You Too Can Walk on Water.......2007-01-03
The weekly men's breakfast and Bible study that I lead spent an enjoyable six weeks examining how following Jesus today requires the same faith that allowed Peter to step out of the relative safety of the boat and move toward Jesus on the water. If you or the people you care about need encouragement in moving out of the comfort zone, this book will help.
Faith.......2006-09-28
This is one of the best book that I have which talk about faith. If you need encouragement or something to help you increase your faith, then this is the book for you.
If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat - Participants Guide.......2005-09-20
John Ortberg really knows how to make it real and how to get people to begin applying biblical principles to their lives.
Get Your Small Group Out of the Boat.......2005-03-15
Ortberg's small group series are among the best, if used with his teaching DVD's (Zondervan, but you'll have to find that elsewhere, it appears).
This particular study appeals to a broad range of backgrounds, and experience levels. We all wrestle with "staying comfortable" vs. "stepping out in faith" when the situation calls for it. Through excellent groups discussion and Scripture investigation questions it is easy to guide a group to go beyond their current "comfort zone" and take steps of faith "outside the boat."
But purchasethe DVD for best results (use an Internet search engine and you should find it quickly). Ortberg is a master teacher, and his 25-30 minute teaching is a must.

A Most Excellent and Challenging Book.......2004-07-08
This book has and still does challenge me to get out of the boat and not become a boatpotato, or a pewpotato. It is an excellent book that will help to a closer walk with the Lord and a more exciting life with that. Since we can only find out if walking on water is for us we have to leave the boat to see and no need to worry the Lord is already there. If we remain in the boat we will never find out if waterwalking is for us and who says that its safer in the boat? I recommend this book highly for every Christian who wants to grow.

Book Description
Retiring to live on a group of islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama, the author humorously describes how he learned through experience, from the first essential of handling a boat without danger to himself and others to his ultimate achievement of establishing an organic farm on the shore of a distant lagoon. Interspersed with vignettes of the local culture, the account gives an insight to the challenges facing Gringos when pursuing dreams of life on a tropical island.
Covering a span of six years from the beginnings of the growth of a tourist industry to a time when the islands were clearly destined to become a major tourist destination, Don't Kill the Cow Too Quick records a passing era.
Customer Reviews:
live the dream.......2007-06-08
Look at a map of Central America then zoom in on Panama. Just south of the border of Costa Rica on the Caribbean shore is the archipeligo of Bocas del Toro. As the author says, Bocas del Toro is like Key West was in the 1920's just getting noticed by tourist, retirees and developers. This is a small city on a tropical island with the surronding islands, coral reefs, beaches, small farms, tropical forests and mangroves, the area that Malcom Henderson and his wife settled to live the years of their life after age 60. This book is his story of finding the area, settling there and working to fit in by building a home in town and starting a ranch (finca) on the mainland.
Henderson has an unusual writing style, very personal, like writing a diary. Some of the chapters have abrupt endings that seem a bit odd in the way that perhaps your grandfather would have told a story that takes a while to register than you get the meaning of it. His writing flows better through the book and makes it hard to put down by the end. Henderson also has a well developed sense of humor and perhaps this follows from some of the laughable situations that he gets into that still maintain the admiration of his friends. I felt a sense of loss when I finished the book, wanting to continue to hear his stories about Panama and the people of the Bocas del Toro region.
I purchased this book mainly to learn more of this region from the expatriat's viewpoint but I picked up much more than that. Anyone moving to a foreign country should anticipate the potential conflict of gringo and latino, foreigner and national, impoverished and wealthy, and greedy and charitable. Henderson covers all of this and it is a tribute to this book that he tells it with insight, humor and is able to evoke some of the essence of the region for us.
I am looking forward to reading a book with the Panamanian's view of the changes in the Bocas del Toro region next.
A good read.......2006-08-23
Malcom gives the reader a real first hand view of Bocas. He is funny and hauman. Makes you want to move there.
Very Interesting.......2006-06-02
This has been the first book that I have read cover to cover, except for techincal manuels. I enjoyed all of Malcolm's adventures. Having been in Bocas, I can relate to some of them.
A psychologist's perspective.......2006-03-05
I have just finished reading, for the second time, Malcolm Henderson's enchanting tour of a marvelous part of the world and his introduction to some wonderful people. Mr. Henderson has what other writers wish they had, the innate gift of being able to tell a story. In this delightful book Mr. Henderson displays the qualities of a Mark Twain, or Ambrose Bierce in that regard. This book would make an excellent addition to University classes in creative writing and psychology courses on social psychology. Mr. Henderson succeeds in taking us to Bocas Del Toro, sharing his relationships with interesting people, and engages us in the desire to live with and assist however we can, both the indigenous tribal natives and other Panamanians. He is candid in the things he probably should not have done, as well as in those things he did well. You will become engrossed in this book as it is truly a relaxing, entertaining, and informative work. Human behavior is remarkably different in different cultures and Mr. Henderson introduces us to a truly admirable culture in Panama, in a truly admirable manner. Sit back, read, enjoy. I look forward to other offerings by this author.
Papa Malc Goes to Bocas.......2006-01-20
Mr. Malcolm (as he's called in the book) is a kind hearted fellow and I found this memoir to be a very enjoyable read. Other books talk about the nuts and bolts of retiring to Panama while this one does a nice job of telling what the experience is actually like. If you are considering moving to Panama, this book is required reading.
Reading of Mr. Malcolm's exploits does beg the question, "When does one man's success become society's failure?"
Malcolm has a house on a Bocas island with 25 acres of rain forest, a 5 - 10 minute boat ride to town. He didn't like the "public" town dock, so he bought an oceanfront parcel in town to make his own dock. On that parcel he built the biggest house in Bocas in which, according to his words, "the majority of Bocas families live in a space no bigger than our downstairs dining area." The house has an upstairs dining area as well. Malcolm also bought a 21 acre farm (with yet another house he built) on the lagoon. He also owns a "mansion" (his words) in Tampa (later sold for a cushy condo), a home of some sort in Virginia, as well as his business holdings to do with his wife's art career.
To make up for his "largess" he did resolve to rent out the bottom part of his downtown Bocas mansion, but only to professionals like a doctor or lawyer, not too the needy families living in the tiny shack. How is that for social action!
If you are keeping score, Malcolm has 46+ acres of land and 5 homes a varying extravagance + businesses, while the average Bocas family lives in a one room shack, owns no businesses, and survives on low wages paid by the likes of Mr. Malcolm.
The financial gap between Mr. Malcolm's empire and that typical Bocas family living in a 14 X 20 ft shack is a massive gap. What effect does such large financial power moving to Bocas have on the native people? What long term effect does sky rocketing land prices have on future generations of poor Panamanians who had a hard time affording property before the boom? What is going to happen when more and more wealthy gringos move in? What happens to the natives when the force of the American real estate market is transposed upon Bocas, a market they can never afford to be a part of?
True, Malcolm gave some bags of cement to a local school, ensured that jailed Panamanian women have soap while incarcerated, bought the mayor an air conditioner, financed a 10' X 10' garden for the growing of medicinal plants to cure snake bites, and furthered the long standing tradition of boosting employment via low wages (enough to get by, not enough to move to a higher class).
But is that charity fair compensation for the loss of their country, the loss of the ability of future generations of natives to own their own land?
It would be interesting if a neutral economist would conduct a study examining the long term economic effects on average natives when wealthy people like Mr. Malcolm, albeit a kinder gentler landowner, invade their domain.
All that aside, the book is a good read, recommended.
Book Description
To a large extent, the story of French filmmaking is the story of moviemaking. From the earliest flickering images of the late nineteenth century through the silent era, Surrealist influence, the Nazi Occupation, the glories of the New Wave, and the present, Rémi Lanzoni examines a considerable number of the world's most beloved films.
In French Cinema, he focuses his lens on outstanding examples from each era to give the cineaste in each of us new insight into our own favorites. Directors such as Robert Bresson, Marcel Carné, Claude Chabrol, René Clair, Jean Cocteau, Abel Gance, Louis Malle, Jean Renoir, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Tati, and François Truffaut are covered in depth, as are stars such as Arletty, Brigitte Bardot, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Maurice Chevalier, Catherine Deneuve, Max Linder, Jean Marais, Yves Montand, Jeanne Moreau, and Simone Signoret.
French Cinema is enhanced by over 100 film stills as well as rare, archival photographs of the personalities who created and informed this superb national tradition.
Customer Reviews:
Love French Movies... but where to start?.......2003-02-18
Knowing some French movies, that's not give you the spirit of it. Even if you really enjoy French movies, and that's my case. Remi Lanzoni's book gives me a sense of why I have that strong feeling for French movies. Like most of us, I have in mind a good picture of Hollywood film makers. Therefore, I can enjoy Scorsese's movies because I saw Billy Wilder's movies previously.
Thank to that book, I appreciate more "Amélie Poulain" now because I know what was there before: like Renoir's movies or why French movies have so touching characters.
Lanzoni's book is an enter in what the French secretly keep out of reach of Hollywood film producers: the recipe of a century of success...
comprehensive and thorough.......2002-12-03
"French Cinema: From Its Beginnings to the Present" represents a remarkable contribution in the field of film studies. Although more stills would have enhanced undoubtedly the visual content of the text, this book remains a great overview of French films.
A great book of film studies.......2002-11-23
This book on French cinema is a very important book. It really offers the reader a unique and splendid overview of one hundred years of French cinema, which influenced American movies as well as many other national cinemas. Rémi Fournier Lanzoni organized its narrative structure chronologically and provided at the beginning of each chapter a concise but valuable historical retrospective. Most likely one of the best books on the history of French filmmaking.

Tchaikovsky: The Man and His Music
ASIN: 0253335450 |
Book Description
This compilation of reminiscences about Tchaikovsky the man is unprecedented in English. The memoirs, diary entries, and interviews written and conducted by his contemporaries show us both the public and the private figure: the law student, the professor, the philanthropist, the loving brother and uncle, the intrepid traveler, and of course the composer and conductor. In more than fifty documents--some laudatory, others not--Tchaikovsky's contemporaries speak of little-known facets of the composer's life: foibles and mannerisms, politics and tastes, prejudices and preferences (sexual and otherwise). The result is a dynamic portrayal of the composer, with all the complexities and paradoxes of a real life.

Tchaikovsky Through Others' Eyes.......2007-07-10
This is a fascinating look at one of music's controversial composers seen through the eyes of his friends, his teachers, his classmates, etc. etc. Some of the articles have never been published before and lend a great look into Tchaikovsky's real life. An excellent book.
...suppressed by melancholy..........2007-04-18
Tchaicovsky was highly melancholy and controversial figure; his personality -pessimist - appeared to be every bit less fascinating than the music he composed with consummate mastery.
Tchaicovsky mixed feelings towards his male and female lovers revealed profound dissatisfaction in him and remained in search of personal happiness that he never found (which made himself infirm of purpose, something of a miserable grasshopper jumping from adventure to another). His story does not fall within the scope of the sentiments, nostalgias or the occasions of pride prevalent among the other composers.
Quite Good.......2004-04-30
I worried that, with the book being made up of other people's accounts of Tchaikovsky, it would be difficult to get an accurate understanding of who Tchaikovsky was. That was not the case at all. With accounts ranging from those of his brother to those of mere acquaintances, Tchaikovsky Through Others' Eyes managed to keep me interested and feeling that I really knew something about not only Tchaikovsky's life, but about the man he was. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest.
A wonderful biography.......2001-09-19
I enjoyed this book very much. A must for anyone interested in Tchaikovsky's life, yet seen through the eyes of people who were close to him. Highly Recommended!
The best kind of biography. A scholar's delight........1999-07-28
This is a marvelous book about Tchaikovsky compiled of diary entries from his contemporaries with commentaries and analysis by Alexander Poznansky. It is the best kind of biography that makes him seem very real, coming to life off the page. It begins in his school years and continues with a variety of rare diaries and letters of people who came in contact with him and kept journals or notes. It covers the entire social range from princes to valets, so we get quite a variety of observations from the intellectual esoteric to the very "earthy." We see not only Tchaikovsky the great composer, but also the student, the philosopher, the scholar, the workman, the card player, the bon vivant, the unsuitable suitor. It also includes explanations and diaries of his ill-fated marriage and many details of his rich personal life. The conflicts and turning points of Tchaikovsky's career and life are well illustrated. Each chapter is chronologically organized with often the inclusion of several diarists, most of whom are included in the copious illustrations. Poznansky begins each chapter with a biographical essay describing the importance of the contributor and the events of Tchaikovsky's life. The comprehensive scholarship is impeccable and the style superb. Poznansky is one of the only serious scholars, who can put together a well researched biography with style, flair and clarity that will satisfy the most stringent musicologist, while also entertaining and moving any Tchaikovsky admirer.

The Woodwright's Workbook: Further Explorations in Traditional Woodcraft.......2005-08-14
Roy Underhill continues his exploration of traditional American woodworking techniques in this title and helps preserve what would otherwise be a rapidly-disappearing art form. In this day and age of power tool mania, Roy reminds us what life used to be like - and not really all THAT long ago. As someone who is new to woodworking myself, I have found Roy's style and wealth of information both refreshing and formidable. In addition to presenting techniques in ways that are easy to understand both by way of description and a wealth of pictures, he continously provides European historical sources that helps place into perspective the techniques that our European/ American ancestors brought here with them. If you are in any way at ALL interested in woodworking as a relaxing hobby or want to make traditional pices, this series, and this book in particular is a great place to start. For example, Roy provides n this volume a fabulous chapter on how to make a traditional wood working bench equipped with vices, hold fasts and bench dogs. He references similar benches dating back to the Middle Ages to show the development of this type of bench - this book is an absolute MUST to any collection!
Part How-To, Part History.......2003-03-29
A fun book to read and study, it reminds us (woodworkers) that having the proper power tool isn't necessarily needed for achieving the end goal of finishing a project. The book is not so much a How-to but a How-was, informing the reader that although 200 years ago our forefathers didn't have a 3 HP table router or a 12 inch Jointer, they were able to produce furnishings that are still highly prized and beautiful today. Roy's conversationalist style of writing is often more like talking with a 200 year old carpenter and is as informative an enjoyable. Rather than giving specific plans with cutout diagrams and where to nail/screw the work he provides us with the inspiration and basic techniques for making our own unique pieces that will stand the test of time.
Book Description
From the most trusted voice on transition, a revised edition of the classic practical guide to dealing with the human side of organizational change.
The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of corporate mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring hitting the news every day. Yet as veteran consultant William Bridges maintains, the situational changes are not as difficult for companies to make as the psychological transitions. In the best-selling Managing Transitions, Bridges provides a clear understanding of what change does to employees and what employees in transition can do to an organization.
Directed at managers and employees in today's corporations, Bridges shows how to minimize the distress and disruptions caused by change. Managing Transitions addresses the fact that it is people who have to carry out the change. When the book was originally published a decade ago, Bridges was the first to provide any real sense of the emotional impact of change and what can be done to keep it from disrupting the entire organization. With new information and commentary on layoffs, corporate suspicion, and the increasing tumult in the business world, Managing Transitions remains the definitive guide to dealing with change.

High rating for a textbook, but it deserves it........2007-08-11
I have had several textbooks in Management between an Undergraduate, Graduate and Business itself. This was no different in that I expected the same old stuff, but was very pleasantly surprised at the authors candor about our perceptions of business practices. It didn't mince words on several tactics used by management and explained why so much doesn't work. It got my attention and I continued my reading with far more interest. There really isn't anything more complimentary I can say than I intend to sell all other books to new students, excect this one which I will hang on to and reference.
great results from this book.......2007-07-06
This is a wonderful book. If you deal with people who need to change how they do their work you must read this book.
great, short, valuable.......2007-07-04
This is a great book for all people who deal with people that are dealing with change. I have found this book useful when being a change agent for a company, or just for management in my own company. Part of the value of this book is it describes the emotional aspect of change. People are not always (usually) logical. Emotions play a large part. Knowing how to deal with the emotional aspect of change is essential. This book gives you great insights in this area.
Managing Transitions by William Bridges.......2007-05-13
This book is great! I was/am dealing with some pretty significant transitions -- the sudden death of my 21 year-old daughter, and a major division re-org at an S&P 500 company. Several months earlier, my VP had mentioned the book and suggested that all of his direct reports to read it. I did and it really hit home.
The author does an excellent job of describing the emotional and organizational impact of change and the mechanics of the process we use to get through it. We use the same basic process to deal with all change -- personal and professional -- and it has been very helpful to understand how it works. There is also a section in the book about the life cycle of an organization and that was illuminating. The book provided some tools to help me make critical decisions.
I bought six copies of the book and have given them out to friends and co-workers.
Great ~.......2007-05-07
This was a great book and well needed. If your your in or responsible for transitions. This is for you - an eye opener to some great ideas and the author takes the reader to both sides of the good and bad involving the transitional process and how it should be done. Great insight!
Book Description
From the most trusted voice on transition, the nationally best selling edition of the classic guide to dealing with the human side of organizational change. The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring appearing in the news every day. No matter the scale, when these kinds of changes hit the workplace, the literal, situational shifts are often not as difficult for employees and managers to work through as the psychological transitions that accompany them. Indeed, organizational transitions effect people; it is always people who have to embrace a new situation and carry out the corresponding change. Without a clear understanding of what transition does to employees and what employees in transition can, in turn, do to an organization, the job of managing workplace change can be difficult; managed poorly, the result can be disastrousto the morale and stability of the staff. As veteran business consultant William Bridges explains in detail, successful organizational change takes place when employees have a purpose, a mental picture, a plan for, and a part to play in change. In short, successful change takes place only when employees are "on board" with it. Directed at managers on all rungs of the proverbial corporate ladder, this thoroughly updated and expanded edition of the bestselling Managing Transitions provides practical, step-by-step strategies for reaching this goal and for minimizing the disruptions caused by workplace change. It is an invaluable managerial tool for navigating an inevitably tumultuous time.

Well-written, organized, but non-innovative.......2005-08-15
I took a College Sophomore class in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1979, and the text was EXTREMELY dry and technical. However, it contained many of the ideas contained in the book being reviewed. Bridges has taken that dry, technical theory, re-written it in user-friendly language, and incorporated concepts from script theory (see Joan Atwood's highly repetitive but informative "Family Scripts") and from developmental theory (see Sandor Brent's very theoretical but informative "Psychological and Social Structures"). The result is a light, very readable book on how people handle change. For someone who has not studied psychology, much of the information will be new and helpful. For anyone in the field of psychology, and especially those who have studied industrial/organizational psychology and developmental psychology, there is nothing innovative here. There are lots of good quotes in the margins, and they might be the best part of this book.
