Customer Reviews:
a painting catalogue not too bad.......2005-06-06
As Amazon has not given some basic detailed info about the book, I include them here. Size: 0.5 x 9.5 x 11.5 inches. Catalogue starts from page 57 with nearly 50 color plates (which take up 100 pages, in the way of one page for a plate, then another page for the text description of that plate) and about 40 black and white plates, the rest of the pictures are small to very small (4 to 2 inches) scattered in the beginning introduction parts of the book. You can find more info from the publisher's site: http://www.kunstboeken.nl by searching "Repin".
I give the book four star because it is the most current painting catalogue of Repin in English. The introduction articles are good to very good, but the texts describing the plates are short and superficial.
The color of the book is not high-quality considering the fact that it is printed after 2000.
The book is okay if it is your first time to introduce yourself to Repin's works, as it shows SOME of Repin's best works, also some of the mediocre ones, including primary design sketches. At least you can learn design ideas from the book, as Repin's design gift is clearly shown in the pictures. However, from this book, you will see very few, if any, of Repin's loosely, and elegant brushworks which he did "alla prima", one of which was the portrait of Stasov he did in 10 hours in two days. You can find such images from internet by typing "Repin" and "Stasov", or using the following link www.abcgallery.com/ R/repin/repin41.html

Excellent for the entry level ophthalmic photography.......1998-11-13
This book is well organized and easy to use. As an ophthalmic photographer of 21 years duration I can attest to the quality of the information presented. I have personally purchased this book for my staff as a reference guide. The illustrations are excellent; albiet, they suffer a bit in the printing process. This is a must have for any ophthalmic photography suite!

Ophthalmic Photography - 2nd edition info.......2004-08-24
As an author of Ophthalmic Photography, I wish to let you know that this book is in its 2nd edition. Also, TwinChimneyPublishing.com has just published Practical Retinal Photography & Digital Imaging Techniques.
I hope that you will find these new books exciting,

There is more to a book than it's cover.......2001-11-20
Whether one is a novice, an experienced photographer, this book is a pleasure to read. While directed to ophthalmic photographers specifically, the sections on the history and instrumentation of ophthalmic photography would be interesting to readers outside the field. As a photographer I find the book to be ambitious in it's scope and highly informative. A tremendous amount of work went into this textbook and it has set the standard for future efforts in this direction.
Nice cover.......2000-12-08
This is quite a nice ophthalmic photography text book, but it is not a must have. Take a look at the "Ophthalmic Photography" by Johny Justice and also "Textbook od Ophthalmic Photography" by Don Wong, I highly recommended.
A MUST FOR EVERY OPHTHALMIC LIBRARY.......2000-04-02
ALTHOUGH TRERE ARE NOT MANY TITLES ABOUT OPHTHALMIC PHOTOGRAPHY AROUND THE WORLD, THIS BOOK IS CLEARLY THE BEST.IT'S VERY EXTENSIVE AND THE TECHICAL QUALITY OF THE PHOTOS IS BEYOND CRITICISM .

Customer Reviews:
the few tips I learned.......2006-07-29
don't put yourself down in anyway No girl has ever dumped you Dating history must be kept history You can get a date anytime you want Do not talk about other girls at all All girls like you Everyone looks good with a sun tan Always smile Carry mints, pen, paper, business cards, chapstick.
Great Book.......2006-02-02
This book is filled with great advice. My friends and I always use the tips from this book and we have been getting more numbers and dates. It is fun and easy to read. I highly recommend this book.
I want those 2 hours of my life back.......2005-10-29
I just finished reading this after reading "The Game". This book reminded me of those instructional films from the 50's that they made you watch in school.
If you take the word "rap" out of this book, it would probably only be about 10 pages. Don't waste your money. This book will only be useful if you are low on firewood.
Worthless.......2005-10-20
This book is, overall, worthless. It has some humor in it and some really basic knowledge (dress in clothes that fit you, exercise, eat well, etc.), but when it comes down to the basic approach of meeting women, it's incredibly vague. They call your pitch to a girl a "rap," and they divide the rap into three categories: beginning, middle, and end. The beginning is where you introduce yourself, the middle is where you build rapport and interest, and the end is where you close the deal with her number. These three sections are the most important parts of meeting women, yet they glaze over them in about 5 pages of text. Also this book recommends buying women drinks: this is a no-no, unless she buys you one and you buy her one. Supplicating a woman will not help your game.
In short, this book can be summed up in about a page of bulleted points. There are plenty of other books on the subject that are better and more worth your time.
Don't buy this book: it's worthless.
Bunch of common sense.......2005-09-03
This book is worthless. Just a bunch of common sense. Very badly written and with not much practical advice or practical examples.
Spends all the time talking about how important it is to have a "master rap" and almost no time explaining how to get one. The word "rap" becomes quite annoying after a while... it must be repeated a million times. Save your money.
Customer Reviews:
Good and Cheap Common Sense........2006-07-30
It seems as if there are an infinite amount of books available on this topic, and soon I'll be contributing one of my own to the morass which is exactly why I reread The Guide this weekend. It's a short, concise, and inexpensive work offering useful advice to frustrated men who can't get women--which is precisely what most of us want more than anything. Its major admonition is for men to develop a rap whereby they can talk to women with confidence and ease. Verbal skillfulness gets your foot in the door with the opposite sex and acts as an admission price. The authors believe that the rap is even more integral for attraction than income which certainly is the case when interacting with complete strangers.
The Guide is not a philosophical work as it's definitely "How To" in every sense. If you're feeling overwhelmed by obtaining girls, which is a major facet of the good life, its pages certainly are worth your time. Of course, the best of the dating books is Lewis and Copeland's How to Succeed with Women, but, if you lack the cash for it right now, this one is definitely serviceable as it covers everything from random encounters to weddings where they offer pinpoint advice on how to proceed from the moment you receive the invitation.
Good book, Good Price.......2002-11-05
This is a pretty good book for it's price. Please be advised that it is very specific and it is only on picking up chicks. After you get her number or whatever, what are you going to do? Good luck, this book doesn't tell you! I must say, I followed the advice in this book very religiously and it works like a charm. It is so easy to get numbers, but guess what? Most of the time, the girl is just being courteous or don't have the heart to tell you the truth. Only 1% of the numbers turn out to be dates. And I still have no clue on what to do during the date because I have yet to find a good book on that topic! The book doesn't cost that much, but if you want to save a few bucks, here is the secret to picking up chicks. Ready? (Drumroll)....confidence. One of the points the book makes is that the idea of girls liking jerks is partially true. The fact is, most of the nice guys are weak and not confident enough, that is why they lose out. In case you don't know, girls do like jerks because most jerks are also very attractive guys. But if you act tough and confident, you have a better chance. The other thing the book says is when girls say they want someone more mature, they really mean someone more confident. Once again, it is all about confidence. For those who do not know what this is, it is doing something based on your own free will without any validation from anyone. It is sticking to and hanging to your own judgement when the whole world seems to be against you. I've lost a really special girl because I did not understand this.
Perfect Guide I Needed.......2002-05-23
This is the perfect Guide I was looking for on how to pick up girls. It is not preachy or didactic. Rather, it is straight to the point, extremely informative and very funny. Hide this book in your house because every one who comes over to visit tries to borrow it. Tell them to buy their own copy.
Pretty Good.......2002-04-25
I have read a number of books of this type and I would rank this one as slightly above average. Keep in mind, as I found out from reading the book The Evolution of a Warrior, that is not so much the techniques you use to pick women up, but your state of mind that really counts. If you can create a powerful state of mind for yourself and be able to influence the state of mind of a woman, you are going to get all the female companionship you can handle.
What to Do but Not How to Do It.......2002-04-10
This book is very good at explaining all the necessary steps of how to approach, meet, and eventually date women. You have to go where they go, build up the courage to talk to them, and set up a date. Once you are aware of these steps, one must practice them. That's all the information that exists in this book. I think most of us already know the steps involved, just not how to proceed with them. If you're looking for anything more than reassurance that the above is the process for meeting women, shy away from this book.
Also, how much value can you put in a book that says one should get drunk before trying to talk to women and should begin to smoke, just in case you find a woman who does?
Book Description
During the highly charged years of World War II, movies perhaps best communicated to Americans who they were and why they were fighting. These films were more than just an explanation of historical events: they asked audiences to consider the Nazi threat, they put a face on both our enemies and allies, and they explored changing wartime gender roles. We'll Always Have the Movies shows how film after film repeated the narratives, character types, and rhetoric that made the war and each American's role in it comprehensible.
Robert L. McLaughlin and Sally E. Parry have watched more than six-hundred films made between 1937 and 1946including many never before discussed in this contextand have analyzed the cultural and historical importance of these films in explaining the war to moviegoers. This extensive study shows how filmmakers made the chaotic elements of wartime familiar, while actual events became film history, and film history became myth.
Customer Reviews:
Some Great Films Overlooked.......2006-04-08
I was disappointed to see that some pertinent films of WWII were left out of this book. Lillian Hellman is mentioned for two lesser known works, but excluded completely are, "Watch on the Rhine"(1943) and "The Little Foxes"(1941)which deal directly/indirectly with fascism. "Hold Back the Dawn" (1941) with Charles Boyer and Olivia DeHavilland, about refugees and their struggles, has been omitted.
There were missed musicals, such as "Babes on Broadway"(1941)with Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney which had entire scene, and original song/subplot devoted to the refugee children from Britain. "For Me and My Gal",(1942) Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, portrays WWI experiences to WWII audience. Also, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942) was in production during Pearl Harbor attack and script was adjusted to promote more support for WWII.
Additional exclusions were the homefront "Hargrove" films with Robert Walker and Donna Reed--"See Here, Private Hargrove"(1943), and "What's Up, Corporal Hargrove"(1944). The "Male Animal" (1941) with Henry Fonda, is set on a college campus, but has politics/extremism focus. "Janie Gets Married" (1946) Joan Leslie, is a light comedy about a new bride helping her husband adjust to post WWII lifestyle.
This book deals with more "serious" films of the era, but the lighter, comical, and musical creations also conveyed ideals, feelings, directly or indirectly re: WWII.
cultural study of wide-ranging influence and effects of American WWII movies.......2006-04-02
World War II films have always been recognized as quintessential patriotic movies. There are anecdotes of young men going directly from movies such as "Salute to the Marines" and "Fighting Seabees" to military recruiters. But the co-authors take a more analytic look at the broad category of American popular movies during the World War II years. They find that the category was more diverse than generally realized, and that its purposes and effects were more subtle than seen in the inspiring films of military exploits. For example, the movie "Casablanca," for all its film noirish intrigue and memorable performances, "presented [the Germans] not only as bad but also as defeatable." This was undoubtedly an important message for the American public in the early days of the War when the Germans appeared invincible in their conquest of the nations of Europe. Surveying the wide, diversified field of WWII films, the authors with academic backgrounds in literature at Illinois State U. examine how many films went beyond simply evoking patriotism to maintaining support for the War on the "home front" and to forming perspectives and expectations on it and characterizing the enemy. The wartime films dealt with all significant aspects of the War, including portrayals of Russians, British, and other allies. The cycle of the films in relation to the course of the War is a thread of the wide-ranging, multidisciplinary study in a readable style appealing to film-lovers as well as ones interested in popular culture, social history, and cultural studies. Preston Sturges' June 1944 release "Hail the Conquering Hero" coming near the end of the body of wartime films deals with the adjustment of servicemen returning to civilian life.

The Psalter : Psalms & Canticles for Singing.......2005-08-27
It is a beautiful book. It is better if the Optional Descant printed above the Refrain than after the verses. I expect each Psalm has its Optional Descant since my voice is suitable for Descant.
