Book Description
Joseph Beuys (1921–1986)—a German sculptor and performance artist--became one of the most influential figures in modern and contemporary art. His charismatic presence, extraordinary life, and unconventional artistic style (incorporating ritualized movement and sound, and materials such as fat, felt, earth, honey, blood, and even dead animals) gained him international notoriety during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Beuys’s innovative influence is particularly felt in the field of sculpture, whose definition he expanded to encompass performance art, vitrine cases, and site-specific environments.
This beautifully illustrated book investigates Beuys’s sculpture, arguably the most fundamental portion of his artistic work, as well as his extraordinary influence. Featured objects include a stunning selection of Beuys’s remarkable vitrines—sly cousins of standard museum presentations, featuring both hand-made and found objects serving as “exhibitions” on Beuys’s own topics; blackboards on which he recorded his lectures and performances; room-sized environments; and many other sculptural projects that frequently served as physical documentation for Beuys’s performances.
With a comprehensive chronology of Beuys’s activities as an artist and activist, this book is essential for those interested in the life, work, and legacy of one of the art world’s most intriguing figures.

Wonderful puzzles.......2007-07-29
If you can read French and if you grew up heaaring Mother Goose rhymes (in English) this book is a MUST HAVE. It presents an almost credible scholarly work about some fragments (in French) from an old civilization. If you will read those fragments aloud, you"ll be able to hear (in English) well known nursery rhymes. Truly fascinating, and soetimes challenging! (Especially if you had never known THIS rhyme in English!)
--And the "scholaraly" footnotes are great!
Great book but bad production quality.......2007-07-11
Zebu qui se regrette: there's no question about that, and I _am_ grateful that it's back in print. BUT, buyers beware: the print in this edition looks like it came out of a cheap photocopier. Van Rooten deserved better.
Mots D'Heures.......2006-07-05
This is a wonderful book - I laughed myself silly the first time I encountered it (even though my French comprehension is NOT wonderful). Will give this one to a friend to whom I know it will give hours of pleasure.
A Pinnacle -- Updated Review.......2004-01-11
Mots D'Heures: Gousses, Rames is one of the greatest literary entertainments ever written. It runs the gamut from touchingly nostalgic to raucous. Above all, it is howlingly funny. It makes me laugh so hard it hurts.
You need two things to enjoy Mots D'Heures: Gousses, Rames. You should know some French, and you should know some nursery rhymes. With that, the book will hit you from line to line with waves of jaw-dropping hilarity, endless wit, and moments of poignant reminiscence.
There is nothing more to say except: bah, six boucs! [The author apparently thinks you should pay six goats---or a sheep?]
PS -- Having unguardedly purchased a copy of the paperback edition listed above, I must agree with the most recent reviewer that the production is dreadful. A reader interested in this masterwork would do well to seek out a copy of the original 1966 edition (long out of print), even at considerable cost. But not from me, though. I wouldn't part with mine for less than tartines fortunes.
Phonetics for Fanatics - "Sounds Like....".......2000-10-14
With the spurious title "The D'Antin Manuscript", suspicions are immediately alerted. D'Antin = "downtown", maybe? More than likely.
The book purports to be a rediscovery of a mediaeval French manuscript and is presented with appropriate introduction, notes, etc., the usual machinery of scholars. However, upon reading the poems, the arcane nature of the French renders the lines meaningless. What kind of manuscript is this, anyway? You go with the flow - you chuck "meaning" out the window.
Read them phonetically, and suddenly the poems take shape in a Proustian way, as the nursery rhymes of your youth. Not only is the book great fun to return to a) for a laugh and b) to practise your French accent (you'll need the fluency for, e.g. "Un petit d'un petit" - Humpty Dumpty). It's also great to fake your friends out with this handy little tome.
Bring it back into print!

Product Description
A humorous collection of classic Mother Goose rhymes set in French words. Mots d'Heueres is believed to have been written in the late 18th-century. The most fascinating quality of these verses is found by reading them aloud, in order to best enjoy their phonetic high-jinks. Each of the forty pages of classic and familiar poems is followed by a line-by-line translation (from French to English) or a pseudo-scholarly commentary of the verse. This book measures 8x5 inches (20x13.5cm). Originally issued with a dustjacket that has a blue illustrated front and a photo of the author on the back.
Book Description
Contemporary Spanish Cinema offers an essential analysis of the main trends and issues in Spanish film since the death of Franco in 1975. While taking account of cinema during the Franco dictatorship, the book focuses principally on developments in the last two decades. Acknowledging the sheer breadth and diversity of Spanish film production since the ending of the regime and the transition to democracy, this study includes chapters on Spanish film’s obsessive concern with the past on popular genre film (including the comedy and the thriller), on representations of gender and sexuality and the work of women film professionals, both behind and in front of the camera, as well as on film produced in Spain’s autonomous communities, particularly in Catalonia and the Basque Country. This book offers a unique and up-to-date focus on a wide range of materials, including work on such established directors as Carlos Saura, Víctor Erice, Pedro Almodóvar, Pilar Miró, Bigas Lina and Josefina Molina as well as exciting new talents such as Julio Medem, Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Alex de la Iglesia, Icíar Bollan, Isabel Coixet and Marta Balletbò-Coll.

Book Description
In post-Franco Spain, a re-shaping of notions of the masculine has been under way for some time. The authors of Live Flesh demonstrate how contemporary Spanish films, during this modern period, have contributed to this process. They do so by visualizing the ways in which Spanish men have been abandoning old self images and adopting new ones, and they explain and explore the complexity and diversity of these fresh cinematic creations of masculine identities.
The book's point of focus is Spanish films of the democratic period, both popular and auteur, made by directors of national and international prominence, such as Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Amenábar, Bigas Luna or Julio Medem, as well as films featuring acclaimed actors who have contributed to the construction of contemporary ideas of the masculine in their country, including Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem. Using a fresh theoretical framework, embracing queer and feminist theory and concepts of nation, race and class, each chapter examines key films that represent the male body, highlighting notable elements – young, muscular, homosexual, (dis)abled, foreign and so on – and goes on to focus on recent case studies from the early 1990s to the present.
An increasingly transnational Spanish cinema is a most promising field in which to explore questions of how male bodies are represented – and mediated – in film. Live Flesh more than fulfils this promise and goes further, to reveal how these representations have intervened in the Spanish cultural imagination.

Customer Reviews:
you won't believe how much is in it!.......2004-10-26
I came across this book kinda by mistake but I'm so glad I did. It's a little gold book with a beautiful shot of young Elvis on the cover, and the inside is even better. It covers every aspect of the King's life and beyond - from cars to Graceland, from the impersonators to the merchandise, from girls to stamps. It's obviously written by a fan but she doesn't make him a saint - she's funny, affectionate and touching in turn.
You may think you know all there is to know about Elvis but I guarantee there'll be something new in here. And if you're a new Elvis fan, this is a fantastic place to start. Go buy it.
Everything Elvis rocks! .......2004-10-22
Even if you thought you knew all there was to know about Elvis, this book is so full of information there's bound to be something new for you to discover. It's a great reference for lifelong fans, and a fantastic introduction to the King for new converts. It covers not only his life, but his influence on popular culture, the impersonators, Elvis Presley Enterprises, the merchandise, Elvis tourism - the whole phenomenon. A great little book.
The only Elvis book you'll need.......2004-09-13
This fabulous little book really lives up to its title. It tells you all about Elvis, the legend, his influence, his music and so much more, all in perfect bite-size chunks. The writer is obviously an Elvis fan but she certainly hasn't made him a saint. It's funny, affectionate, mind-blowing and moving in turn. A must for anyone who loves Elvis, loves music, or simply loves life and popular culture.

Entertaining and Fun with Good Information.......2007-03-07
Many gambling books are dull reads, even if they give the best possible analyses of the games and how to play them intelligently, so it is great to read a book that is enjoyable and, at the same time, informative. This book gets high grades in those areas. Definitely worth reading.
Frank Scoblete: author of Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution!
A view point worthy to read.......2007-01-13
I liked the way the author wrote. It was an easy read. The video poker section maybe outdated by now because casinos change machines so often.
You Really Should Read This Book.......2006-05-24
If you are only going to read one book on gambling, this is the one you should read. It covers just about every casino game of any consequence and gives you the essential information about each game with a minimum of blather.
This book doesn't promise to make you rich, but it sure can keep you from looking like an idiot. The best part is that it is a pleasant read. It makes the details easy enough to understand so that you can become a competent gambler without having to have a PhD in mathematics.
Even if you don't go to casinos to gamble, this book explains the factors that make it possible to win more often than you lose - for all kinds of games. That's why you really should read this book.
Great Book ! - The Real Starting Point.......2006-05-14
For everyone who isn't an expert gambler, this is the book to start with. It gives you straight information on how to gamble well, how well you can really expect to do if you do it right and what is just wishful thinking.
This is not a get-rich-quick snake oil book. It really does explain how to gamble like an expert and how to achieve the best possible results by playing the games that you stand the best chances at. The best advice is on avoiding sucker games and sticking to the best bets. There is also some really amusing material about BS books that promise the impossible.
Even if you think you are already a pretty knowledgeable gambler, this little book can probably teach you a thing or two that will make you a better player. Beneath the humorous title is a really useful book.
> More Fun When You Win!.......2006-03-21
This is a great book! I read it before my last trip to Las Vegas and it really helped me. Rather than wasting my time and money on sucker games, I followed the advice and played the games that gave me the best odds. Not only did I come out ahead for the trip, but the casino comped my room!
I find that going gambling is a lot more fun when you win. This book can really improve your chances. It sure has helped me.
Customer Reviews:
Not a '9-6 Jacks or Better' Book.......2000-02-07
For strategies for 9-6 Jacks or better, Duces Wild and Joker Wild machines, try another book.
Stanford Wong is the master of casino gambling. I respect his writings on all aspects of the casino. I just want to let people know that this book goes into great detail about the 8-5 Progressive Jacks or better machines. He gives a two page review of most other video poker machines and covers basic strategy for the 6-5 Progressive and 10's or better progressive machines.
(Since this book is titled 'Professional Video Poker', I feel these comments and rating are appropriate.)
An excellent book if one *studies* it........1999-10-13
I've found Wong's books to be among the best in their field and have more confidence with what he presents than most other authors (many of whom print information which is mathematically wrong). Like "profession blackjack," this book's weakness is not the author's fault but the system's "fault." Few progressive jackpots I've seen in Vegas reach the required $2,122 breakeven level much less a profitable one.
