Kant after Duchamp brings together eight essays around a central thesis with many implications for the history of the avant-gardes. Although Duchamps readymades broke with all previously known styles, Thierry de Duve observes that he made the logic of modernist art practice the subject matter of his work, a shift in aesthetic judgment that replaced the classical "this is beautiful" with "this is art." De Duve employs this shift in a re-reading of Kant's Critique of Judgment that reveals the hidden links between the radical experiments of Duchamp and the Dadaists and mainstream pictorial modernism.

For the French Post-Structuralist Lover.......2007-01-11
If you have a background in French critical theory, arising from the 1970's, this book will be a totally fascinating one. If not...you may be baffled, find the book not what you expected, and get angry that you've spent this much money on a work you can't understand. Be forewarned. That having been said, Thierry de Duve is one of the most outstanding contemporary art theoriticians writing today. His slant on Duchamp and Duchamp's impact on subsequent modern/contemporary art is without parallel.
Kant was a Lutheran.......2002-09-07
What's missing in this marvelous book is a discussion of Kant's Lutheran religious aspect. Most philosophers treat him as a secular philosopher, but he wasn't. The assault on Christianity by the entire left has seemingly eclipsed the fact that all of the great 19th century thinkers were Lutherans: Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, of course, but also Nietzsche (who was raised as a Lutheran and whose seventeen prior generations of father, grandfather, etc., had been Lutheran pastors), Marx raised in a Lutheran household, and so on.
What Duchamp does is knock out the otherworldly purposiveness that Kant claimed for art. Thierry de Duve aborts the seriousness of his discussion by neglecting the theological dimension of Kant's inquiry.
However, this is still a great book albeit a limited one, as he could have gone further to the heart of the culture wars by contrasting the Sadean nature of the surrealist enterprise with the Christian nature of the Kantian.

A difficult question posed and a difficult answer given. In struggling with two of the most influential personnas in our culture, De Duve does himself, and aesthetics good. Long and convoluted (to the extreme of working out a symbolic logic of Duchamp?) this is nonetheless a great book

Chinese Painting The Complete Self-Tutor.......2000-02-23
I have read the hardcover edition 1990 (borrowed from the library) and because I have done Chinese Brush, I found this to be a beautifully illustrated and well contained information book about Chinese Brush Painting. Ting's paintings are well designed and include demonstrations from the simple bamboo to fish, flowers, birds, insects, trees, grasses and rocks; even a short reference to chinese calligraphy. In the 128 pages she has managed to tell it all! Even a beginner, with practice, could follow her work.

it doesn't matter how many times i have read this book, every time i open it up i laugh out loud. any person who comes to my house and opens it laughs out loud. it's probably one of my top 5 books of all time and i'm an english major.
Get lost in "The Lost Deep Thoughts".......2002-12-24
I happen to like the "Deep Thoughts" seiries, so of course I like this one. Jack's way of turning a situation into a psychobabble feel good statement is hilarious and the pairing of the nature photographs reminds me of those dumb motivational posters at work - you know, the one where it's a photograph of an eagle flying over a canyon and it says something such as "Strive with all your being to fly as the eagle does fly and makes more widgets for our company to make huge profits from" or some nonsense like that. (Okay, the signs _don't_ say the widget thing.)
It's vaguely comforting to read this book, to know that Jack's still out there (in more ways than one!) pondering his "deep thoughts" and sharing them with us. If you enjoyed the other books, you'll want this book.

Jack Handey got a lot of mileage out of his "Deep Thoughts" series, but I think the word "rejected" would be more fitting than "lost" for this fourth volume. I don't want to suggest that it's bad by any means, but it's definitely the most hit-and-miss of the series. Some of the passages are classic Jack Handey ("Toward the end of the Stone Age, I bet there was already a feeling that metal was just around the corner."), but many of them are downright lame ("Life is a constant battle between the heart and the brain. But guess who wins. The skeleton."). If you've got the other three volumes, this one is absolutely essential, but if you're a newbie, don't start here. Pick up "Deep Thoughts", "Deeper Thoughts", and "Deepest Thoughts".
Jack Attack!.......2001-07-17
This was a great book and a must have for all 'deep thoughts' fans. His insight can be considered literary genius. I can say my favorite is talking about his childhood friend Chris and the adventure with the ice cream in Chicago - classic! (you will have to read the book yourself to find out the ending)

Jack Handey's at it again with his characteristic blend of pseudo-feel-good musings. "The Lost Deep Thoughts" features enormously funny observations, remembrances, hypotheses, and situations in Handey's finest style.
Handey returns to his more traditional style of humorous deep thoughts in this volume, featuring briefer musings than in his magnum opus, "Fuzzy Memories." From the dangers of King Kong (kids seeing that huge genitalia), to the king and queen who loved laughing (until they remembered they had the plague), to the problems of owning a robot (having to whip it to get it to fetch the paper in cold winters), this book's loaded with wonderful, side-splitting thoughts.

For the very fast swing there should be a version for much lower metronome, but there is not... We try to learn these jazz standards, in order to learn sometimes you need to have a version much lower metronome.. All the musicians in the play-along really good...

Challenging crossword puzzles are hard to find anywhere but at Amazon.com. I am a third-generation puzzle solver, and now I understand my Grandmother asking for puzzles "the harder, the better".

This is an excellent puzzle book. The puzzles are extremely challenging but not impossible to do. A lot of fun.
The Best and Toughest American Crosswords.......2005-01-14
Ever since Will Shortz took over the New York Times Crossword puzzles they have gotten harder, mostly because he and his constructors have an almost inhuman ability to come up with wickedly misleading (and often funny) clues. And the themes they come up with for their puzzles are often the sort that stump you until you finally make a breakthrough and then you chortle in delight (or groan loudly if it involves a pun). But that's OK. I'm at an age that I figure if I can continue to do the toughest Times puzzles I'm holding Alzheimer's at bay.
Times puzzles get harder as you progress from Monday through Saturday. In this book are the tough Friday and Saturday puzzles. A lot of people think the Sunday puzzle would be the hardest, but it's not. It's simply larger than the daily puzzles.
The pages are about 8.5 X 11 inches. What I tend to do is tear a page out (with a puzzle both front and back) and affix it to a clipboard so I can do them with a sharp pencil and not have the underlying pages make it too soft for a crisp pencil mark. But one can simply do them in the book.
These are definitely the best classic American-style crossword puzzles available.

Digital technology for the production, transmission, and reception of television is expected to replace analogue transmission throughout the world. The timetable for this transition is uncertain and different projections have been made for virtually every country in the world. This book gives the exhaustive details of the issues of this changeover in Europe and elsewhere. The rollout of digital terrestrial television (DTTV) in Europe is a significant issue for every country included in this survey. These same governments are all wrestling with the issues of how to use the technology in ways that create both commercial and non-commercial value. There are enormous technical, political, and economic aspects to be considered and these vary from country to country in Europe.
