Book Description

Logo Design Workbook focuses on creating powerful logo designs and answers the question, "What makes a logo work?"

In the first half of this book, authors Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka walk readers step-by-step through the entire logo-development process. Topics include developing a concept that communicates the right message and is appropriate for both the client and the market; defining how the client's long-term goals might affect the look and needs of the mark; choosing colors and typefaces; avoiding common mistakes; and deciphering why some logos are successful whereas others are not.

The second half of the book comprises in-depth case studies on logos designed for various industries. Each case study explores the design brief, the relationship with the client, the time frame, and the results.

3 out of 5 stars Take "workbook" out of the title. Call it "The Design of Famous Logos".......2007-08-02

I don't know why the author decieves us wih the word "Workbook." It should be called "about the design of famous logos"

The first 51 pages (of 230) are great. I like the colorful charts and stuff about logo design in the first 51 pages.

The rest is interesting to look at and read, but not what I need and not essential (230 pages long). I am still looking for a book about the logo design PROCESS. It is well designed and has some really great stuff, but still not everything I needed.

ANY AUTHORS OUT THERE? WRITE IT! I need a book which uses about 5 individual designers, their clients, and quotes from both about the process. I want pencil-sketchy looking beginnings. I want stuff about failures as well as successes. I want nitty gritty detail. If you can even include pictures of the designers and clients working together, photos of designers holding up logo proposals in front of a client, that would be great. I know what logos look like. I see them all the time. I do not want to see another book like this that just shows me a bunch of logos!

5 out of 5 stars Getting ready to test the steps of this book..........2007-02-27

Another great book from AdamsMorioka. Graphic design geniuses. :) This book is superb-- it tells you what concerns need to be addressed before the design process begins, which was the most helpful part of the book. But the eye candy-- the logos-- were the most fun. I went through it all in a day, but can't wait to study it more intently. This will be a great reference and inspiration to me in my work.

Subtitled "A hands-on guide to creating logos," the book Logo Design Workbook is a must on the studio library shelf of any designer interested in the creation of logos. Now in paperback, this Rockport Publishers offering covers all aspects of identity design clearly and specifically. From "The Ten Rules" to "Implementing Logos," the authors provide a visual smorgasbord of case studies and examples from firms such as Landor Associates, Morla Design, Pentagram, and over 45 other studios of all sizes, in explaining the basics and the idiosynchrocies of the logo design process. This book should be required reading for the students of any educational institution as they begin to study the creation of identities. - Jeff Fisher, Logo Notions/CreativeLatitude and bLog-oMotives

5 out of 5 stars Great resource, even for non-designers.......2005-09-18

A great introduction to logo design process. The first part of the book is about the process and the second part is a catalog of case studies.

This book will not teach you how to draw your logo in your favorite vector-based drawing program, but gives you a bird's eye view on process and it does it great: it is easy to understand and covers important topics as asking the right questions to make your logo successful. Because it talks about the process more, it does not go into details with e.g. typeface and color selection (there are books which cover those topics), but you can see how the complete identity was designed e.g. for Metropolitan Market. Recently I had to work with external graphics professionals to re-design the graphical identity of one of our products and this book's focus on the process has helped me a lot to understand and to set up project requirements.

I recommend this book to anyone who works with designers or interested in logo design.

3 out of 5 stars Sparks creativity.......2005-08-17

You will not become the logo master overnight. This book is a decent resource for developing your own thought process in logo creativity.

The book is full of decent examples of "how we got here from there."

It is good reading and very educational but not necessarily a revelation.

Outdoor Life magazine columnist Patrick McManus has been compared to Mark Twain. Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing demonstrates that he isn't, but McManus will suffice until the next Twain comes along. In this book, the outdoorsman extraordinaire is doing what he does best--telling fish stories, getting into scrapes with buddies, occasionally waxing philosophical, but grousing just as often. Sometimes he even ventures out of the wilderness and into mainstream humor. McManus is easily the equal of Dave Barry or any other contemporary humorist, for that matter:
When I think of all the times a Stupidity Alarm could have saved me from committing a Stupidity ... Here's one instance that comes to mind.
My children: "Daddy, please buy us a horse! Please, please, please, please!"
Me: "Well, kids, I guess a horse wouldn't be all that much trouble."
    Stupidity Alarm: WHOOOOP! WHOOOOP! WHOOOOP!
The cowboy who sold me the horse said it loved children. That was true. But as I belatedly discovered, it hated adults.
He covers well-worn territory, sure. But McManus is a pro who tells stories well, so Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing is always diverting. And when he tells stories about his boyhood, a note of wistfulness and pathos creeps in that is definitely agreeable. This volume is a fine effort by an experienced woodsman/wordsman.

    Book Description

Patrick McManus believes that life's eternal truths exist solely for the purpose of being overturned and proved incorrect. In McManus's world, nothing is what it should be. All steaks should be chicken-fried, strong coffee is drunk by the light of a campfire, and fishing trips consist of men acting like boys and boys behaving like the small animals we've always assumed they were.

Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing is a hilarious collection from one of the greatest contemporary humorists: Dave Barry or Garrison Keillor with a twist of Mark Twain. In these adventures, McManus offers wry observations about small-town life and curmudgeonly insists on bigger and bigger fish stories.

    Customer Reviews:

We love McManus and laugh at his marvelous stories. Especially funny for men who enjoy the outdoors.

5 out of 5 stars 'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09

I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.

However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.

By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)

    5 out of 5 stars Great Reading.......2003-12-02

This book brings a new meaning to outdoor lit. His humorus tales and fun characters make this book fun for all ages. For anyone looking for good reading or even for humorus interp. for speach as I did, Patrick Mcmanus is on the top of the list.

5 out of 5 stars McManus is Mc FUN is.......2001-07-18

As a long time reader of Mr. McManus, my first run-in with this hilarious author was back in the days when I'd steal my dad's Outdoor Life and Field and Stream magazines to sneak away and pour over Mr. McManus' columns. I'm all grown up now, and don't have to steal my dad's magazines. I'm much sneakier now. I buy the books on the pretext that I'm getting them for my husband, then I read them instead. Mr. McManus, you are a delight!! Please write more!

5 out of 5 stars All McManus books are a 5. They are all alike!.......2001-07-07

I rareley laugh out loud when I read. While reading this I laughed so hard I teared, snorted, screamed and possibly had a brief out of body experience. The first book of Pat's I read made me laugh. Every time I read a new book or reread an old one I just thought it got funnier and funnier. I can't wait to review them all. The more you understand how he writes the funnier it gets. To some of the folks I know, I can't even mention his name for fear that they will explode with laughter. This book talks about the terrible crime wave which left a whole town with ...news. Also discussed are topics such as Beards, Laziness, Pipes, secret junk food clubs, fishing, life-saving techniques and imagining you're eating roast beef. Sure if you hunt and or fish or camp-it would help you laugh at these stories, however my own grandmother thinks he's hilarious and does none of these. You can't go wrong either way. Even if you have never killed a poor defenseless Avid! Ha! You've got to laugh. If you like trouble, then buy this book!

      Book Description

Ray Harryhausen's animated creatures sparkled with predatory alertness and subtle quirks of behavior that stamped each with a distinct and memorable personality. His use of stop-motion animation—a method of animating movable models and puppets—brought dinosaurs and monsters to life on the silver screen. Many animators and special effects wizards, like Phil Tippett of Jurassic Park and Jim Aupperle of Planet of Dinosaurs who are still working on prehistoric-based films, openly credit Ray Harryhausen as having influenced their careers. His films are famous for being among the very best of the genre.

The first chapter of this book chronicles Harryhausen's formative years and work on numerous 16mm experiments, beginning with his viewing of King Kong in 1933. The next four chapters cover his four feature-length dinosaur films, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Animal World, One Million Years B.C. and The Valley of Gwangi. These chapters provide extensive information about all aspects of the staging of their stop-motion content and many additional facets of the overall production process. The paleontological accuracy of his saurians from a modern perspective is also examined. A chapter on his work and experiences in the 1970s and beyond discusses potential dinosaur projects, as well as The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, which is not a saurian film, but does include the bat-winged homunculus. An appendix covers a number of dinosaur-related films that Harryhausen had a hand in.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, tons of info........2007-09-28

This book is awesome from all the aspects of each of Harryhausen's dinosaur projects. Things are discussed that never have really surfaced in any other Harryhausen books. The only down sides are that it's not a better quality paper and lack of any color photos. Some photos appear blurry also. Overall, a great book if you want more than just pictures.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" read for all Ray Harryhausen fans.......2005-07-04

Ray Harryhausen was a pioneer of the cinema. He was the man whose expanded and advanced the utilization of "stop-motion" animation. This was the labor intensive and painstaking practice of making models and puppets seem to come alive through moving slightly moving them and taking a photograph of each movement, then position them again, taking another photograph, repeating the process again and again. Running those still photographs through a film projector gave the fascinating illusion of movement that was a popular breakthrough in "special effects" for early fantasy movies featuring all manner of monsters and dinosaurs. In particular, Harryhausen was essential to bringing to life the dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures that were integral to his four classic Hollywood films: "One Million Years B.C.", "The Beasts from 20,000 Fathoms", "The Animal World", and "The Valley of Gwangi". Harryhausen developed stop-motion animation techniques that were to influence subsequent generations of film makers and special effects professionals down to this very day. In The Dinosaur Films Of Ray Harryhausen: Features, Early 16mm Experiments And Unrealized Projects, Roy P. Webber provides a complete history of Harryhausen's cinematic work that rises to the level of archetypal scholarship, including an informative perspective on the pale ontological accuracy of the saurians from a contemporary perspective given the advances of paleontology over the past few decades. Of special note is the exhaustive appendix regarding dinosaur-related films that Harryhausen had a hand in. Nicely illustrated throughout with vintage photos and a "must" read for all Ray Harryhausen fans, The Dinosaur Films Of Ray Harryhausen is a core addition to professional and academic library Cinematic Studies and Film History reference collections.

      Book Description

Aaron Copland is one of America's most beloved musical pioneers, famous for Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Lincoln Portrait, as well as the movie scores for "Our Town" and "Of Mice and Men," and numerous orchestral and chamber works. This candid, colorful memoir begins with Copland's Brooklyn childhood and takes us through his years in Paris, the creation of his early works, and his arrival at Tanglewood. Rich with remembrances from Leonard Bernstein, Virgil Thomson, and Nadia Boulanger, as well as a trove of letters, photographs, and scores from Copland's collection, this is one of our most vivid musical autobiographies, and an enduring record of an American maestro's explosively creative coming of age.

After having purchased my second of this series (and exhausted the first) I just ordered another four of these excellent compendia from amazon. If you're the kind of person who dreams in Latin and does six or seven of these an evening, you soon run into the notion that you want more bang for your buck. These are hard puzzles, but why bother otherwise?

It is supremely satisfying to complete one of these gems. I don't claim to do this for every puzzle in these books, but I get better and better, and give these puzzlers credit. The perforations are great, especially if like me you like to put individual puzzles on a clipboard for some serious attention.

Because I ordered these books from amazon, I got a discount, saved shipping, saved sales tax, and saved the gasoline I would have expended for a desperate emergency bookstore visit.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasure to use.......2001-07-19

What makes the Simon & Schusters Super CrosswordBook stand out among the rest is the ease of use. The pages are perforated for convenience and a higher quality of paper is used. It is a smoother paper, making the printed word stand out and it making the writing stand out more clearly.

Gary Keller tells it like it should be. If you have a true servant's heart and want to help people with the skill and knowledge you have as a Realtor, this is the book to read. He gives a number of techniques but ultimately, he makes it clear that you need to want to do what is best for your client - not your pocket. Excellent book, I recommend this to every new agent I work with. Need a plan to get started right, Gary is the man with the plan!

4 out of 5 stars A Primer on doing business.......2007-07-14

There are many books available that address sales and marketing for the real estate agent but very few provide solid advice on how to run a real estate business. This easy to follow book provides information that, if applied will set any agent apart from his peers.

5 out of 5 stars A must read! Changed my career!.......2007-06-27

After the first 6 months in business (I've just finished my 3rd year), I decided to buy a number of Real Estate instructional books on how to sell Real Estate. I had a feeling this would be the best. I saved it for last. I read 4 other books over the holidays (about a 4 week period). The other books were good, but redundant and nothing that changed me. I started to read this book and immedietely knew that this book was different. It gave specific direction on what has worked for successful people. Not just successful people here and there, but the book took a scientific approach to identify common practices among groups of successful Realtors.

The result? I can't say that I do everything that the book says to do. I should! But, I have taken parts of the books and implemented those practices. The year after reading this book I made the top 20% in the market. The following year I made the top 15%. And this year is off the charts. I'm not sure where I will end up, but top 10 or better.

There is no substitute for hard work, but I would rather work hard the right way. Best of luck!

4 out of 5 stars You've Got To Be Open To A Unique Perspective.......2007-06-23

This is the best book on the market on how to organize and run a real estate agent business. Its principles are applicable whether you are a brand new agent, or have years of experience. That said, if you are looking for a book to explain listings per se, or working with buyers per se, then this might not be the right book for you -- this book looks at being an agent from a much broader (and more important in my opinion) perspective than that. If you are smart (if you "get it") then you will realize that the things taught in this book are far more important to your ultimate success than any book you might read on how to take a listing. Buy this book, read it ten times, and when you think you understand it read it ten more times! Its message is that important! Few understand this.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am an attorney, real estate broker, investor, trainer, and am affiliated with a Keller Williams office in Chicago. That said, rest assured that my affiliation with Keller Williams does not affect my integrity with respect to my review of this book -- honestly, it is a good book that you should read. For what it's worth, I am the author of another real estate related book that can also be found here on Amazon -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording. It's part of the "WealthLoop Series" and unlike many real estate books, it is an actual "how to" book as opposed to a "rah-rah" book and comes complete with forms, checklists, leases -- everything the beginning investor needs to get started. Agents from across the country have been telling me that my book finally taught them the right way to work with residential investors.

I would suggest that you buy both mine and Gary Keller's books.

                      1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-06-19

I am a rookie agent and found the material worthless, a complete waste of money and time. There is no real technique here. The book so repetitive its agonizing. The worst part is it really has nothing to do with real estate, I learned NOTHING about the real estate business reading this book. You could re title the book an infinite number of times and have the same content "The Millionaire Day Care Worker" for example. There is as much information about running a day care as there is real estate. Steer clear.
