Our current understanding of the paintings of Manet is so heavily filtered through the lens of Impressionism that in many ways, his contributions to art history have been obscured. Called the "first modernist," his paintings marked a break with the past and paved the way for what we've come to accept as modern art in the treatment of the canvas as a flat surface. But during his time, Manet's modernist innovations were the object of ridicule. "It's flat, it isn't modeled," said Courbet of the nude in the painting Olympia. "It's like the Queen of Hearts after a bath." In Manet's Modernism, Michael Fried has set out to see Manet as his contemporaries would have seen him and to gain a more accurate reading of Manet's place in history.
Book Description
Manet's Modernism is the culminating work in a trilogy of books by Michael Fried exploring the roots and genesis of pictorial modernism. Fried provides an entirely new understanding not only of the art of Manet and his generation but also of the way in which the Impressionist simplification of Manet's achievement had determined subsequent accounts of pictorial modernism down to the present. Like Fried's previous books, Manet's Modernism is a milestone in the historiography of modern art.
"Beautifully produced. . . . [Fried's] thought is always stimulating, if not provocative. This is an important book, which all students of modernism, in the broadest sense, will find rewarding."—Virginia Quarterly Review
"An astonishing piece of scholarship that will cause readers to rethink their understanding of Manet's influence, ambition, and achievement."—Gary Michael, Bloomsbury Review
"An audaciously brilliant book, long awaited and as essential reading for philosophers as for art historians."—Wayne Andersen, Common Knowledge
"Art history of the highest originality and distinction."—Arthur C. Danto, New York Times Book Review

Returning to the Cardinal Manet Resource: An Appreciation .......2007-01-10
Michael Fried published his magnum opus 'Manet's Modernism: or, The Face of Painting in the 1860s' in 1996, the compendium of three books, actually, that remain the most significant resource of the study of the much maligned painter Edouard Manet. In Manet's time he was essentially hidden in the rise of the more popular Impressionists, garnering criticism form his colleagues and critics alike for works that appeared to mannered, too posed, to unnaturally lighted. But fine author and historian Michael Fried introduces some new ideas about the painter that could just place him in the echelon of the first of the Modernists.
Fried 'suggests' that Manet's paintings were for the most part tableaus created in his studio from professional and non-professional models wearing costumes suggestive of the many allegories and historical events that Manet painted. That fact, in and of itself, does not venture Manet much further thatn say, Caravaggio et al, but it is the interplay between the subjects and the painter (and hence the observer) that Fried alls to our attention. The lighting of his paintings seem to have its source from the front as opposed to the back lighting or streams of side lighting usually chosen by other painters. And to make the controversy even more interesting, Fried suggests that this studio technique coupled with various observances of his models' features (eg. barefeet that suggest having worn contemporary type shoes) may - and the important word is 'may' - represent the uses of photography as the tool Manet used! Horrors! you say? But then by the time of the painting period of the 1860s that Fried is exploring, photography was well known and fairly widely used as a means of documenting history, battles, families etc. So why should an artist of Manet's importance not include this new tool in his painting paraphernalia?
It is an interesting concept and one that in today's widely used techniques among artists of not only using photographs to reference 'sittings' for later solo studio work but also to include photography in the canvases (witness Rauschenberg, etc) makes complete sense. Gone are the prejudices against photography as not being 'pure'. And it just may be that Manet, if he indeed used photographs in his painting preparation, is more important in the overall history of painting advancement than he has been regarded! A fascinating book (even at 676 pages) and a fine addition to the library. Grady Harp, January 07

Politically incorrect humor is nothing new. It seems most jokes from stand-up comedians through the years have poked fun at race, religion, gender or sex while the rest have intended to be downright offensive. (Remember Don Rickles?) But Bill Maher has refined his humor on the nuances and sometimes ridiculousness of all things "politically correct." Host of the talk show "Politically Incorrect," he unloads a collection of his gems for this book, such as: "Should we require a seven-day waiting period to have a child, and if so, would it be called the Brady Bunch bill?" One book you won't want to take to the Rainbow Coalition meeting.
Book Description
WITH BILL MAHER, ITS NEVER POLITICS AS USUAL!
Conservatives know what they want and they never forget it. Except for the time Reagan went to the Vietnam Memorial and shouted, Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
Heidi Fleiss and Dr. Kevorkian [are] two visionaries of American social life, the queen and king of coming and going.
The Packwood diaries must be pretty racy, because most of the people who read them apparently cannot wait to get to the bottom of the next page. Which, of course, was Packwoods problem, too.
"Politically Incorrect is almost single-handedly reviving political satire. . . . [It] has pulled off the rare trick of being irreverent without being irrelevant."
The New York Times
"A funny collection of jibes, jokes and tidbits from his hilarious late-night show."

Does Anybody Have a Problem with That? The Best of Politically Incorrrect.......2006-11-02
It is an alright product, but I would not buy it again, because it did not inform or give me any other information that I expected, and I would only watch it once - waste of money to buy something that I would use/view only once.
Tired Tripe.......2006-09-17
Like the HBO Show: Real Time with Bill Maher; this book too often cuts to the cheap joke. Maher, always a mediocre stand-up, can't resist an easy joke where a top comic would aim higher. Bill sets the bar comfortably low: keep the yucks coming, kiss the celebrity bum, but don't break a sweat or Heaven Forbid come up with something original.
Bill Mahr.......2006-05-23
Bill Maher is as politically correct as they come. Our two party dictatorship allows only two points of view ranging from the loud mouthed, cowardly Rush "knows who butters his bread" Limbaugh to the communist "It takes a village crowd".
Even nutjobs like David Icke are a refreshing change from these clowns.
Good guy, So, so book........2006-03-19
I found this book to be nothing more than an instant replay of Maher's television shows. But then that's exactly what it's advertised to be. We should give thanks when we end up with something that's as advertised. It's just that after six years of Bush and Cheney, the truth is boring.
True, this is more of a soapbox than a review, but that's okay since I'm a registered Republican. George W. Bush has decreed that we're not governed by the same rules and laws as everyone else. It wasn't that long ago that Bush bashing was one of the loneliest jobs in the world. Now, if you're not careful, you'll get trampled under by the androids and politicians who are trying to distance themselves from Bush, Cheney and America's Dachau--Abu Ghraib and the Iraqi holocaust.
yawn.......2005-03-07
While you are all busy spitting at one another, Bill Maher is probably off cavorting with Hugh Hefner and his little bunnies. Maher's association with Hefner is telling on many levels. Among them are: his affinity for the 'cool' and dedication to the depthless; his lack of meaningful personal relationships, the seed from which sprouts his warped view of society; and the maniacal influence that seems to pervade so many of his thoughts. All of that said I think that people should view Maher(and read him so that his comments can be considered naked, without the veil of cuteness). He is an example to behold. Of what? That is for you to decide.

Why Buffy Matters: The Art of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
ASIN: 1932100008 |
Book Description
This biography of Joss Whedon, creator of television's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, offers a compelling look at one of the most talented television writers, directors, and producers of this generation. It explains how Whedon turned a midseason replacement show on the fledgling WB network into one of the most beloved shows of all time. Examined is Whedon’s life from childhood to the present; his successful screenwriting career, which includes Toy Story, Speed, and X-Men; the development of Buffy and Angel; and the launch of his much-anticipated science fiction series, Firefly. Discussed are Whedon as a producer with a self-proclaimed “feminist agenda,” as a genre fan writing for genre fans, and as a leader and mentor.
Customer Reviews:
Rather fluffy.......2006-01-11
An interesting but somewhat fluffy look at Joss Whedon's career. This book has the same almost naive as the Mary Tyler Moore biography I read last year. The book was written at a time when Buffy and Angel were both on the air. Firefly though floundering was still on the air but there's no mention of the upcoming film, Serenity.
What the book doesn't admit to is the possibility that Joss could burn out -- which it appears he has from recent interviews. Joss is clearly very driven and clearly loves his work but does he know how to slow down?
I found the insights into the storylines fascinating. Joss clearly lives by the adage of "write what you know" and it shows in his work.
30% More Joss!.......2005-09-23
I highly recommend this book to the many fans of Joss Whedon. Highly informative and very well-written, this book offers wonderful insights into the mind of one of my all-time favorite writers.
Joss' fans all know Joss is a genius - this book gives us insight into where that genius came from and how it developed. It also clarifies some of the difficulties Mr. Whedon faced in his early career in Hollywood with some of his screenplays such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie) and Alien: Ressurrection. It gives us insight into Joss' early T.V. writing and script-doctoring career, as well as detailed description of his Buffy, Angel and Firefly television days.
I'd like to see this book updated, as it seems to have been published before BtVS season 7 aired, let alone the green-lighting of Serenity, the movie based on Firefly. Joss has many wonderful things in his future - let's see it here.
A must read for Joss Whedon fans.......2005-04-05
Candace Havens does a brilliant job of pulling back the curtain on one of the most creative minds in film and television. Her style is informative, clever and engaging. While Havens is clearly a fan of Whedon's work, she maintains journalistic integrity as she reveals behind-the-scenes facts and fresh tidbits for the most rabid fans. Treat yourself to a great read and buy this book!
Couldn't put it down.......2004-10-30
This book is great. I've been a fan of Joss since the first time I saw Buffy. This book isn't all about Buffy though. It covers Buffy, Angel, Firefly and more. Funny as hell too.
I couldn't put the book down. I read it straight through in one afternoon. A lot of insight into Joss and all of the cast members of his show are interviewed. It's part biography and part, well, everything else.
Best book I've read in a while. Buy this book!
Joss Whedon: The Genius Behind Buffy.......2004-06-12
Read this one in an afternoon and it kept me entertained throughout. It has a lot of highly amusing Joss quotes. The guy is genuinely funny. It was nice to learn about his movie career because I didn't know too much about it. It has a lot of great Buffy information but it could have used more on Angel. It has a section on Firefly even though it was written before the show aired. The section on Joss' Fray comic convinced me that I need to go buy it now. My only major complaints are that the writer misspelled a character's name and the lack of Angel information. Despite those flaws, any fan of Joss Whedon will enjoy this book.

Book Description
This book collects over a decade's worth of Albert Goldman's critical writings, including essays on Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Bob Dylan and many more.
Customer Reviews:
Alber keeps missing the point..........2003-01-01
The late Goldman was one of those writers from the jazz generation, like Ralph Gleason or Nat Hentoff, who discovered rock and brought his experienced vocabulary to it. But he discovered rock late (1967) and never really got it. His feel for black music--blues, soul--comes through in his James Brown, B.B. King and others in this anthology of his pieces for Life, the New York Times and other mainstream publications circa 1968-70, but his incredibly naive take on the "new rock" makes one wonder why these pieces are being reprinted now, of all times, after his biographies of Elvis and John Lennon have been so thoroughly discredited. (His book on Disco, probably his best, hardly ever gets mentioned...) He wields a lot of classical allusions, but could use a few lessons from Meltzer in how to apply them: do we really need to know that Stevie Winwood "went through metamorphoses not found in Ovid"? With a definite talent for the descriptiive phrase, he paints a true-seeming portrait of Paul Butterfield, then goes on to dismiss his amazing band--not even mentioning Michael Bloomfield! Unnecessary. Compare to Ellen Sander's or Paul Williams' much superior essays of the same period.
A decade's worth of Albert Goldman's critical writings.......2002-10-26
This collection includes over a decade's worth of Albert Goldman's critical writings, and reads like a travel guide to a modern Inferno. Albert Goldman was the author of controversial music biographies, and this book includes his essays on Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley and many more. Albert Goldman is also the author of the 1978 book on disco music.

very old.......2007-08-21
bought this for inspiration and was very disapointed! this book is both very dated and very simple (some pages had pictures with a few stickers thrown in the blak spots). the only good scrap page is the one on the cover.
Useful but not exceptional.......2006-02-08
I recently bought this book and was surprised at the pages included. Overall, it has several very different layouts and some neat ideas for special topic pages (champagne bridal shower, leaving limo cutout). But, the pages were all sent in by "real people," so they do not at all have the polished look of the "memory masters" who usually compile Memory Makers books. I would say the level is intermediate, with a huge lack of advanced techniques. Antiquing, dry embossing, embossing with powders and a heat tool, embellishments, tags, vellum, use of computers, paint, and fabrics are not included at all. These are pretty standard in today's scrapbooking trends. The examples use stickers a lot, matted pictures, and cut-outs. There are some neat ideas, quilling in particular, and I really like the heritage pages. Because the pages were sent in, any specialty techniques are sparce and only given a few pages as examples. I agree this book is outdated overall, but is still a great place for a jump-start.
Very beautiful..........2005-04-02
It is a very beautiful book. I have relatives who were married last year and we have tons of pictures to scrapbook. I was out of ideas, because I feel they have to be so perfect and elegant. This gave me plenty more. Thanks!
disappointed.......2003-11-01
Flipped through this book quickly and knew I wouldn't be using any of the techniques. Extremely dated and basic, especially for a book written in 2000.
Beautiful, elegant ... and yes time consuming.......2002-11-27
I have been married more than five years, and am still assembling my wedding scrapbook (other projects, work and children keep taking priority). Over the years, I have assembled quite a number of books and magazine articles about wedding pages. This book is my number one reference - the one I keep coming back to.
Other books will show you pages that can be done more quickly, but is that what you want to do for one of the landmark events of your life? Not every page in my scrapbook will look like the ones in this book. But, it's nice to know that at least a few of the pages were labors of love inspired by some very artistic people.
If you have only one or two pages in your wedding album that are as attractive as the ones in this book, it will have been worth the purchase.

For every organization that's ever reached beyond its own borders for top leadership only to have those high-profile, high-salary top leaders bungle and exit as abruptly as they appeared, this smart, substantive, and clear-eyed book is a godsend.
Written by three genuine experts in management development (one of them helped design GE's deservedly famous succession-development process), The Leadership Pipeline: How to Build the Leadership Powered Company finally shows organizations how to undo the knots and clogs in their in-house "leadership pipeline" so they can constantly groom the best people at every level to move up to the next rung of leadership. Not only do the authors identify the six transition phases, or "turns," of the pipeline--from self-manager (individual worker), first-line manager, and managers' manager to function manager, business manager, group manager and enterprise manager (the last essentially being a CEO)--they describe each with remarkable insight; these six levels of leadership growth, for example, exist at the base of every midsize or large organization regardless of how each structures its individual hierarchy. With each, they take care to point out both the new skills and values (there is a difference) one must acquire before making a turn, as well as how to measure whether someone has them before moving them along. They also show how to determine whether candidates are embodying those skills and values once they've made the transition, and how to groom them for the next level right from day one.
The result? Not just one potentially qualified in-house candidate for a top leadership position (the kind of dearth that forces companies to look outward for expensive and often short-lived leadership "stars"), but a whole generation of them, not to mention younger generations to succeed them.
The book includes sample scenarios (from both fictional and real-life organizations), definitions, checklists and charts that break down and illustrate its main points in every chapter. Though shrewd and straightforward on every page, The Leadership Pipeline isn't for anyone looking an easy, step-by-step, worksheet-guided quick fix to management development and succession planning. The authors stress that it takes some hard thinking for companies to determine what they really need from leaders at each level (and to figure out which individuals have the potential and desire to scale those levels). It requires serious homework to translate this book's excellent guidance into a plan for your own organization's pipeline.
That's a small price to pay, however, for a book with such uncommonly clear insight into what it takes to nurture and navigate the best leadership from right inside your own house. --Timothy Murphy
Book Description
Together, these authors have more first-hand experience in leadership development and succession planning than you're likely to find anywhere else. And here, they show companies how to create a pipeline of talent that will continuously fill their leadership needs-needs they may not even yet realize. The Leadership Pipeline delivers a proven framework for priming future leaders by planning for their development, coaching them, and measuring the results of those efforts. Moreover, the book presents a combination leadership-development/succession-planning program that ensures a steady line-up of leaders for every critical position within the company. It's an approach that bolsters the retention of intellectual capital as it eliminates the need to go outside for expensive "stars," who will probably jump ship before they reach their full potential anyway.

Customer Reviews:
This book is awesome - not just theory!.......2007-08-25
I really enjoyed this book - I was able to apply it to my own career and validate what it takes to move as well as use it with my teams to help them figure it out. It's clearly written and easy to apply in any large corporate setting.
I wish they provided a table (Skills, Time Application and Values) for all the passages - not just the first one from an Individual Contributor to a first line manager. I had to construct those myself...
Highly recommended!

Use this book to Develop Yourself.......2007-05-28
The downside of this book is no color inside and few visuals.
Great book for managing your own development 'climbing the ladder' of transitions because the book has defined competencies by level and examples, which you can consider for yourself & situation.
MUST READ for aspiring HR managers and line managers serious about talent management. Should be in any HR degree curiculum !
Know as "The Book" in response and solution to "The War for Talent", which unlocks the secrets of GE talent management.
A thoughtful and helpful look at the upward transitions.......2007-05-23
This book gives you a thoughtful and reasoned look at the upward transitions process. It does an excellent job of outlining the needs and potential problems at each career stage. The advice is usable by three groups of potential readers.
You should buy this book if you are a senior manager, human resources executive, or board member in a company of any size who wants to understand the dynamics of leadership development/succession planning in a large company. The book outlines several transitions and the changes in skills and attitudes that are needed at each one, along with relevant pitfalls.
You should buy this book if you are a manager on an upward career trajectory and you want to learn what's ahead and what skills and attitudes you need to develop as well as what possible problems lie in wait. The chapter that describes your next transition will outline what you will have to do and what you will have to do better.
You should buy this book if you supervise other managers and you want some insight into analyzing performance issues and helping your people develop.
What are the negatives?
This book is written for people in big companies. With the exception of a couple of pages early in the book, managers in small to mid-sized businesses will need to figure out how this applies to them. This is not a big issue because of the range of material covered and the clarity of the presentation, but it still will be irritating to some readers.
The big company whose shadow falls across this book is General Electric. That's not a bad thing in itself. GE does a marvelous job of leadership development. What you have to watch for, though, are unstated assumptions that other companies have the same culture and values as GE, or even that values matter as much everywhere else.
For example, the authors state that "formal training for first line managers is fairly common." That's not true in the majority of US companies today.
The authors state that "managers who aren't cut out for this role should be put on an individual contributor track." But in many companies there is no individual contributor "track." Only managing others leads you to higher status and higher pay.
While there is a lot of good material handling the various transitions, you won't find much on deciding who should be promoted in the first place. But that's the only significant gap I see in this excellent book. Judging who to promote is a key decision and a key component of the success of the promotion.
The bottom line is that this is an excellent book, filled with material that can be used by people in many different situations.
an undergraduate perspective.......2006-04-25
In my reading of the "Leadership Pipeline," I found it to be a fascinating look at all levels of management, albeit a somewhat unconfirmable one. The purpose of the book seems to be to outline, then advocate what it calls "The Leadership Pipeline." Think of it like a long drainage pipe system, with six intersections symbolizing six transitions in management (each of which can run smoothly or become clogged based on managers values and behavioral traits), all the way from entry level employee to CEO. The book takes the approach that every entry level employee, if they possessed the drive and willingness to change can become the CEO of any company they choose. In fact, the book so strongly advocates this position that it maintains that this is the best way to create the ultimate CEO from the very first pages.
It is this belief that I found to be somewhat irritating as I read through the book. The notion that an entry level worker based in sales with no degree could become a more qualified CEO than their more educated counterparts was a little hard for me to swallow. The Leadership Pipeline does not actually advocate replacing more educated workers with less educated ones, but it does continuously profess that the best way to groom a leader at any leadership level is to ensure that they have gained the experience necessary by following all of the steps of the leadership pipeline model which have come before it, and all of those steps should be taken within the same company. It seems almost as concerned with advocating the implementation of its own design as it does offering constructive criticism to better the current system of business management. The book also fails to take into account what happens to the worker who gets laid off due to corporate takeovers, mergers, etc.
That said, it does offer a number of good points on how to become a more effective leader. The most important of which is how it dispels the notion that one can cling to the elements of their job which made them successful at previous management levels. At each level of management (the book professes) a worker must take a step back and re-evaluate what exactly their job at that level becomes. It offers means by which one can generate positive communication and feedback so that the manager can truly become an effective leader. The way it goes on to illustrate the key traits of successful managers at each "intersection" by way of useful real life examples and anecdotes was one of the books major strengths and helped the flow tremendously. The language in which the book is written is geared to any audience, and in light of the admittedly dry material, it made it run more smoothly.
One of the biggest problems I had with the book was it seems to have been written for an incredibly limited audience. The advice it gives on how to eliminate management problems at most of the "intersections" could only really be applied by extremely high levels of management which few actually achieve. I must admit I am still an undergraduate college student so my perspective is limited, but I cannot imagine how a great number of the concepts in this book would be useful to anyone other than those in the realm of vice president or CEO, and even if the principals were appropriate to that audience, they would have to be a member of a global multi billion dollar corporation with similar levels of management and positions discussed in the book.
In the end I give it a 3 out of 5.
