          Book Description

The Anasazi Indians of the Southwest represent 2,500 years of cultural continuity, from the early Basket Makers of 700 B.C. to their modern descendants, the Pueblo Indians. The pueblos and cliff dwellings they built during their halcyon days between 1100 and 1500 A.D. are the most spectacular ruins north of Mexico. In this book, all of the significant and accessible Anasazi ruins are photographed and described in detail. Special attention is paid to the magnificent sites of Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, and Kayenta. Also included are illustrations of rock art and examples of the delicate jewelry and beautiful ceramics that have survived.

5 out of 5 stars Big and Beautiful.......2003-06-22

This book has tons of color and B&W pictures and some of the best pictures of the southwest ruins you are ever going to find. It also has numerous site maps illustrating the ruins and their vicinity. The pictures are not just your everyday tourbook photos. They are spectacular. The author mixes numerous aerial shots that show you overviews of the sites and mixes in a generous amount of detail shots to help you see what the sites look like when you are there. There are also sketches and conceptual drawings which tell about the history. Just because there are a lot of photos, do not think the text is lacking. The book has all you would ever need to know about the sites including history, archeological finds etc. It accomplishes this amazingly enough without boring the reader. The most important thing about this book is that it is comprehensive. An example is its description of Mesa Verde park which is 44 pages of text and pictures. The section includes a detailed description of the stops you can make off ruins road as well as maps and pictures of sites you can't even access. Overall, this is the book you want to have when you plan your trip and the one you want on your coffee table to show your friends and family where you have been. A must have for anyone fascinated by the Anasazi culture.

I have found this to be an excellent resource for finding sites of interest and a faithfull companion for exploring the site once I have arrived. The information provides a nice addition to any anasazi library

5 out of 5 stars poetry in (hiking) motion.......2006-04-09

The literary world is full of inequities, with recognition and reputations that are much larger or much smaller than they deserve to be, and in the world of literary nature writing no one better illustrates this point than Reg Saner, whose work deserves to be far better known and admired than it is. The Southwest is America's most powerful and lyrical landscape, and it defies many of the conventions of literary nature writing developed to celebrate green English hills or Walden Ponds or Sierra forests. To do justice to the Southwest requires originality and lyricism and a philosophical eye. Reg Saner has what it takes. Once when I was heading into the Grand Canyon on a solo early-summer hike and knew I'd be spending a fair amount of time hiding in the shade, I took along Saner's "The Four Cornered Falcon". When you read a book surrounded by the hard realities and deep beauties of the Grand Canyon, it has to stand up to a higher test of reality than it might in your cozy easy chair at home surrounded by human culture in all its artificialities. Saner's prose is full of lyrical gems and philosophical knots to make you stop and think and helps make the Southwest more intensely real.

          5 out of 5 stars a reflection, not a travel brochure.......2002-06-25

One of my favorite books about one of my favorite destinations. This is a collection of brief essays that is the perfect companion for a trip to the Four Corners area and the abounding ruins and sites of the Anazasi. Its not a book detailing where to go and how to get the most for your tourist dollar. Rather its a musing reflection on what its like to visit these places from the perspective of a 21st century traveler. These writings draw our attention to the feelings evoked by the experience of wandering among the reminders of another people, another culture, another cosmology and way of understanding what life is about. I have been to Keet Seel. Its a demanding walk. I appreciated having the opportunity to travel back there with someone who provided words to some of the feelings I experienced at the time. A subtext of these writings is the idea of the sacred in a postmodern world that has chased that concept into small corners of carefully bounded scholarship. The author discovers it abounding all around us and that we are desperate to recover some sense of it for ourselves. The trip to Keet Seel and the other destinations is a rediscovery of its significance and meaning for human existence.

3 out of 5 stars If you're headed to keet seel this is not the book for you.......2001-02-20

I agree with the editorial (Kirkus) reviewer; which you ought to read and pay attention to before buying. This is strictly one man's impressions of what the Colorado Plateau means to him. It is not authoritative as to the ruin's archeology or anthropology. It could better be classed as poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Reaching Keet Seel is an incredible collection of essays........1999-02-20

I beg to differ with the reviewer from Kirkus associates. The guy's a pompous windbag and if he actually read the whole book, I doubt seriously if he understands what he read. The book is not and does not profess to be a work of anthropological science. It is a look into one man's reactions to historical places which cannot be described, but have to be experienced to feel their effects. Again and again, Reg Saner captured these effects, along with his "show me" quest, poetically with a mastery of language seldom seen anywhere. The reviewer claimed that the writing style hurt his teeth. I suggest he sees a dentist, for the writing is great. Like the places they describe, the essays need be experienced for their full effect. I won't do them the dishonor of inadequate description here. The book is an informative, thought-provoking read. As one who has been researching the Anasazi, Pueblo, and Hopi for some time, I place this book near the top of my favorites list of the last 25 books I've read on the subject. The essay, "Spirit Root" should win an award of some sort. It's fabulous. To anyone reading my review, I say get the book. To the reviewer who was so shallow, wishy-washy and unkind, I say get a life.

          5 out of 5 stars Captivating essayist.......1999-01-03

I first discovered Reg Saner after reading about him in Denver's Bloomsbury Review--a regional book review periodical. Shortly afterward, while browsing an on-line bookstore I found his "The Four-Cornered Falcon: Essays on the Interior West and the Natural Scene" as a remainder. That book spoke to me. Each essay another gem of insight into the natural scene of the Southwest. "Reaching Keet Seel" is more of the same. This time an attempt to come to terms from 600 years hence with the Anasazi--a people who learned to prosper in corner of the world that is now largely barren.

                Book Description

Congratulations, you middle-aged baby. Look what you've grown-baggy arms and knee flaps! And is that a new tooth-or just a lovely cap? And what month did the new hair come in across your ears? A tongue-in-cheek celebration of middle age in the form of a traditional fill-in baby book, my middle-aged baby book is a perfect keepsake for both women ("Is it hot in here or is it just me?") and men ("remember, it's prostate, not prostrate"). It's an irreverent take on the shared symptoms of growing older. Beginning with vital statistics (car phone number, cholesterol count), it provides a permanent place to record memorable Firsts--first liver spot, first espousal of conservative opinions-and a place to remember favorite toys such as the Jeep, rowing machine, and the big screen TV with VCR. There's a middle-aged baby's Horoscope, Favorite Nursery Rhymes, and The Seven Stages on Men's Hair Loss. Thoughtfully printed on anti-glare paper, in large, easy-to-read type, the book is illustrated throughout in full color. Paper over board, Full-color illustration throughout, 96 pages, 8" x 8" .

5 out of 5 stars Irreverent? Yes. But Hilarious!.......2006-12-10

I recently bought this book for a female friend turning 40. Although some may find the irreverent language offensive, the fact is we all have particular bodily functions and we all eventually get gray hair--everywhere. No, I might not give this book to my prim Aunt Sophie, but for anyone who is playful and open to cheeky humor, it's a great gift.

                1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-08-20

The title of this book sounded really funny and I/we were prepared to have a lot of laughs, but as soon as I thumbed through the book I had wanted to give to my son for his birthday, I realized the thoughts and jokes in it were totally inappropriate - not only for a gift for my son, but to share with any of the people I associate with - and we're fun-loving people who love to laugh. The content and the language in the book were not reflective of how I and my friends and family think or talk - so I returned the book and thank you for the credit on my billing.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Gag Gift for Those 45-65.......2000-07-15

Why don't middle-aged people have fun? Perhaps because they don't yet have a Middle-Aged Baby Book to put them in the mood.

Almost every parent has filled out one of those baby books that includes birth time, weight, pictures from the hospital, first birthday party, favorite toys, and so on. Why shouldn't the middle aged have one, too? . . . Especially since their memories may be going, and this will be the only way to record their lives to remember what happened.

The satire is quite complete. Almost all of the baby book sections are put into a middle-aged context humorously for this version.

To begin setting the mood, the cover is padded like a baby book often is.

                The author's acknowledgments include middle-aged amnesiacs who helped, the editor (Ruth . . . ?), gastroenterologist (Dr. Henry . . . ?), and husband ( . . . ?). If only she could remember their names!

You have a chance to make your own family tree (with humorous asides about the people on it), note your memorable firsts (colonoscopy, reading glasses), tell whether you are a girl or a boy ("Do you spend most of your time in front of the toilet, running water, or naked on the lawn, rolling in snow?"), describe your teething history (which ones are dead, bridges, implants, gold crowns, bonded, capped, and gone?), date important fashion firsts (when you gave up spandex, threw away your bikini, and started wearing shirts out of your pants), and put in samples of your hair (both colored and uncolored versions).

The book also has many humorous essays like the history of solid foods and weight (1993 -- Oprah loses 60 pounds. Pavarotti gains it.), I Forget, and Why? There are also middle-aged versions of many well-known nursery rhymes.

You can also add your favorite expressions (like, Where are my glasses?).

If you give this as a birthday gift, the birthday girl or boy can put in key facts of that day such as the price of a standard facelift in that year.

At the end, you'll find a living will. It gives your relatives authority to plant you when the time comes.

Even if you don't have the nerve to give this to anyone else, you should get a copy for yourself. It's the most humorous thing I've ever read about becoming middle-aged!

Get rid of your misconception stalls about middle age not being funny.

A clever book, one that I often give to aging boomer friends, along with copies of "Dave Barry Turns 50" and "Getting Old Sucks" by Ed Strnad. They all enjoy it.

                5 out of 5 stars A hilarious send-up on being middle-aged.......1999-02-28

This is the funniest, smartest humor book I've read in ages. I give it to everyone, male or female, for any occasion whatsoever, although it makes a special hit at big 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 birthday parties where it usually gets read out loud and is better than any entertainment you could hire. All the stuff in it -- middle-aged sex, middle-aged expressions, middle-aged concerns are right on the nose. I can't wait for the author to grow up at little more and see what she does with old age!

                Book Description

In this now-classic study, Linda Williams moves beyond the impasse of the anti-porn/anti-censorship debate to analyze what hard-core film pornography is and does--as a genre with a history, as a specific cinematic form, and as part of contemporary discourse on sexuality. For the 1999 edition, Williams has written a new preface and a new epilogue, "On/scenities," illustrated with 25 photographs. She has also added a supplementary bibliography.

4 out of 5 stars an ok read.......2007-03-19

Hardcores author like to use big words and confusing dialog to get her point across. This is a good book if you can get through all the muddle and crap to get to her point. The book definetly reads like a college textbook and it does get tediouse at times. A good book if you have patience

                1 out of 5 stars It's not a monolith, it's a muddle.......2005-11-17

Williams' claim is that all porn is not the same, but her book title is very specific which would lead one to believe she will make claims about only hard core and not about the attendant debates over all of porn's place in society.

You have to be suspicious when the majority of reviewers of an academic book have not graduated high school. I can barely get my university students to read academic writing.

1 out of 5 stars blah blah blah.......2005-04-06

The writing is jagged, superfluous and constantly filled with statements on what the author is intending to say in the book without actually saying it. This book is boring, hard to get through and organized in a questionable fashion. Unless you need to read it for a college course I strongly recommend against it. Frankly I don't understand the other reviews on this page praising the book.

                5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-05-08

This is an easy to read, comprehensive analysis of visual pornography. Williams is thorough and openminded, and clearly shows that this isn't a homogenous and stereotypical genre. On the contrary, she maintains that all trends visible in other types of movies exist in pornography as well. An interesting read.

                4 out of 5 stars eXXXtremely provocative.......2001-07-20

I should probably look more closely at the covers of the books that I am ordering online. Any reasonable individual might naturally assume a book entitled "Hard Core" would contain information regarding the apple harvesting industry; however, such is most clearly not the case with Doctor William's book.

Despite the initial mix-up, I found this work to be quite titilating. Prior to reading Hard Core, I was only familiar with pornographic films (or "pornos") as an avid viewer. Hubby Rick and I now devote a significant amount of money and time on pornos in the hopes that we might one day fully appreciate, as does Linda Williams, the pornographic film. And our marriage has never been better!

                        Book Description

Rockabilly endures, lives, and thrives due to the great devotion that the members of this culture lay at its cuffed-dungaree-pearl-buttoned-cardigan-sweater altar.

Defined in the 1950s, evolving over the decades, rockabilly has slipped into various cultural niches and displayed its musical and fashionable wares on many a group from purist to psychobilly. Most recently disaffected punks, Japanese hipsters, and Latino youth make up the largest growing contingency. And there's no denying the smooth crossover with the neo-country scene.

With more than 100 photos and illustrations, Rockabilly revels in revealing the history, music, conventions, dress, hangouts, and overall modern lifestyle of this timeless movement. It is a cinch to see why so many claim rockabilly as their cultural calling.

Kurt Ohlen is a rockabilly musician, DJ, promoter and record company owner (Big-K Productions). He lives, teaches and rocks in Denver, Colorado with his wife and children.

Eric Peterson is a full-time writer. He has numerous books to his credit and writes regularly for magazines, journals and newspapers on a variety of subjects including music, trends, travel and business.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the first SoulCards deck.......2003-08-25

The first SoulCards deck became an instant favourite of mine, so when I've seen this one (SoulCards 2) on the shelve, I bought it immediately.

As in the first deck, this one contains 60 cards and accompanied by tiny white book doesnt list any titles or meanings to the cards - the pictures are intuitively understood, their meaning being self-explanatory / evident.

The cards themselves are of the highest quality I've seen yet - good cardboard with shining coating that, in combination with the excellent art, as in the first deck.

The cards can be used for both reflection and divination, and can be used with the first deck or seperately on it's own.

The two small thing I don't like about this deck are it's somewhat dark colours, and the box, which is of good material, doesnt have any mechanism to keep it closed, so I keep the cover closed with a ruber band.

5 out of 5 stars Mirrors of the soul.......2001-06-23

This is not a book, this is a profound set of artistic images in the form of cards. These cards can be used in many ways. They are an incredible meditative and revelatory device.

I obtained the first set of Soul Cards about two years ago, under the impression that I was purchasing a kind of tarot deck. I was only half right. These cards can easily be used for divination. They produce an incredible reactions in the viewer because of the powerful images they portray. These cards touch the subconscious and stir it up.

Whenever I bring these cards out, I always get strong reactions out of those around me. I like to use them for simple three card divinations, but they can also be used for meditation. If you're lost for creative ideas you can pull a card and let it inspire you. Whatever your purpose, I highly recommend these cards. They're powerful and wonder full.
