Book Description
The art of mosaics is of ancient origin, enjoying its first great period during the Roman Empire and its second in eighteenth and nineteenth century Rome, when a flourishing craft developed in response to the Grand Tour. Affluent tourists provided the ideal market for views of Rome and images from Ancient History and mythology, painstakingly worked in tesserae - minute pieces of coloured enamel - a technique known as 'micromosaics.' Some of these were so intricate that one square inch could contain as many as 1,500 tesserae. The range of objects was enormous - from jewellery and snuffboxes to large pictures and tabletops. All of these forms and subjects are comprehensively represented in the Gilbert Collection.
This book examine the collection through full-colour illustrations and detailed descriptions and commentaries. New research into the workshops and business practices of two significant Roman mosaicists derived from the archives of the Vatican Mosaic Workshops is detailed in an essay by Massimo Alfieri, while Judy Rudoe explores the techniques and materials of small-scale Roman micromosaic objects, illustrated with spectacular magnified photography.

Finally - a Fabulous Book on Micromosaics!!.......2000-10-21
Finally! Finally, there is a book on Micromosaics, and what a wonderful book! Prior to the publication of Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel's masterful research job, there have been no books available to the collector of Micromosaics or for anyone who wants to read about a little-mentioned, and fading art. And who better to write the book then Ms. Gabriel who has been Sir Arthur Gilbert's Private Curator since 1994. Sir Arthur Gilbert's collection which now resides at Somerset House in London can only be equaled by the collections of The Vatican Museum in Rome and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
There are a number of books that cover the vast and impressive Gilbert Collection: "Gold Boxes", "Monumental Silver", "Portrait Miniatures in Enamel," "Gold and Silver," "Hardstones" and now "Micromosaics." As I happily have the other books in my library - I can honestly say that the micromosaic book must have been the most difficult and yet it is extremely comprehensive. Ms. Hanisee's scholarly work on "The Gilbert Collection: Hardstones", must have been a bit easier to write as there is so much information on the art of Pietra Dura and Hardstone. Micromosaics is another ball of wax as so little was written - and I'm sure if it was to be had - Ms. Gabriel uncovered the information.
The Appendix has a fascinating section written by Professor Massimo Alfieri "New Notes on Giacomo Raffaelli and Michelangelo Barberi" two of the leading Master Mosaicists of the 18th and early 19th century ---- fascinating. It takes you to the time of the workshops, with letters, sales receipts, drawings and the like. Not only revealing, but just plain fun for devotees of the period. One can also find a section on techniques and materials used in the making of these compelling masterful and minutely executed works of art.
Seeing the fabulous color plates on almost every page, the items in the collection, one finds themselves rubbing their eyes in bewilderment over the artistry of these rare and intricate pieces. The footnotes are so interesting and well-written that they are a book within themselves, and my only wish was for a third hand to mark the place as I turned from text to illustration to footnote and back to text. In many books one tends to skip a lot of the footnotes, unless they pertain to a particular interest -- but Ms. Gabriel has added fascinating information and I told myself it was worth the digital exercise to read each and every one.
Lastly - Jeanette Gabriel has masterfully included very detailed Biographies of the known artists of the time and the literature connected with these artists; a Glossary - with full descriptions; a seven page Bibliography; Exhibition Histories, and an extremely well-written Index.
"The Gilbert Collection: Micromosaics" may look like a sumptuous coffee table book of 310 pages (which it is:), but it is definitely not fluff and mirrors -- it is a serious and fascinating work which should included in any library of Decorative Arts.
Obviously - I think it's just great, I thank Ms. Gabriel, and I give it 5 stars.
Margot Conte

Customer Reviews:
wonderfully loopy and self-aware micky-take of its own genre.......2006-05-21
I first encountered "From Eroica With Love" in a fan-produced English translation published in fanzine format some years back. I was bowled over by the series, which I can only describe as a wonderfully loopy and self-aware micky-take of its own genre. I was delighted to hear that CMX have taken on the job of providing an official English translation for the series. They've done a very nice job of it, with excellent reproduction of the original artwork, and what I'm told is a faithful translation from the original Japanese text.
This first volume serves mainly to introduce the various characters, but it contains some very entertaining stories. It isn't quite typical of the series as a whole, as it initially appears that three superpowered teenagers are amongst the main characters. In fact, they exist mostly to introduce Dorian Red Gloria, Earl of Gloria. He's a very, very wealthy aristocrat who collects beautiful things, and his hobby is stealing art treasures. He's also very beautiful himself, very, very queer, very, very flamboyant, and has an entourage of equally beautiful and gay young men.
The three teenagers disappear by the end of volume 1 and never return, which is good because they're a lot less interesting than the other primary ongoing character, who doesn't appear until part way through the book. Major Klaus Heinz von dem Eberbach is also a wealthy aristocrat. However, if he's queer, he's so far back in the closet he's in danger of running into a lamppost, he's a top Nato agent, he has no sense of humour, and he has no time for degenerates. Pity his path keeps crossing with Dorian, who is all the things he despises. Unfortunately for Klaus, Dorian is also brave, clever, resourceful, and a number of other things he admires and didn't expect to find in a degenerate. The feeling's mutual - Klaus is a good many things that Dorian despises, but he's brave, clever, resourceful... and decidedly pretty...
However loopy the plots may get, they're believable while you're reading them, and there's some fine and very funny story-telling. The characters are flawed but always sympathetic. The art is utterly gorgeous. The first story in this book is a bit tedious in places, but it's the setup story and worth going through so that you have the background. Even if you're not really into the "pretty young men" genre of manga, this one's worth a look.
Wasn't a fave but still good........2005-05-22
I didn't really enjoy this Manga Series though I bought it. It was sweet and funny but didn't float my boat. The art is one thing that always throws me off - and believe me if your the same don't go for this book. The main character looks to much like a chick for my liking but still he always seems to prove he is male. The only 'older' Shonen Ai - Yaoi Manga I go for is Kizuna. Trust me, go for Kizuna. But it's totally your decision.
Funny without being stupid, exciting, irrevrant, priceless.........2005-04-08
FROM EROICA WITH LOVE is a wonderful series. It manages to be witty and exciting, intriguing, with an intelligent storyline that doesn't take itself too seriously but is never quite idiotic--more like irrevrant and carefree..rather like the main character!
The series chronicles the wild adventures of gay British aristocrat Dorian Red, Earl of Gloria aka the daring art theif Eroica (after Beethoven's symphony) and his frequent clashes with NATO intelligence officer Major Klaus Heinz von dem Eberbach, a strict (but handsome) German man, who is Lord Gloria's exact opposite. Their encounters are fraught with sexual tension and terribly entertaining.
This is a lengthy series still continuing in Japan (now at issue 31, with several other works by the same author tying into the EROICA universe..)but the stories always seem so fresh and vibrant. CMX's translation, thank goodness, is superbly done. Old fans of EROICA who have been reading the Japanese editions for decades, or new fans, will have nothing to complain about, so far at least...now let us all hope CMX continues to translate all 31 books and maybe some of the related series by Aoike Yasuko as well...
BUY THIS BOOK. It has come to the point where I can no longer afford to buy manga and anime like I used to. The one series I will continue to save my pennies for is THIS one. It's a classic and it's a pure delight from start to finish. This is the perspective of a young woman, so perhaps not every one will agree, but for me FROM EROICA WITH LOVE is the best Japanese manga of all time, and one that will ALWAYS have a special place in my bookshelf.
I adore the Earl's lively personality, that seems to shine off every page with a life of its own, the illustrations of famous European buildings, the references to Western art and the historical aspect (the Cold War is the backdrop to the series). Unlike a lot of manga, the story is dense and verbose and it takes a while to read through it, unlike the usual 15 minutes it takes to skim quite a few modern titles, this one leaves you feeling satisified! You get your money's worth.
A Look Into the Future........2005-03-09
Without really giving anything away, here's what you can expect from this series..... There will be at LEAST 32 books, I'm waiting for 33 to come out in Japan this year. The art style, if you have a sharp eye, will keep changing a bit here & there & be significantly different by book 20. They gradually get away from the tall skinny femme look of the early 80s & grow shorter, buffer, & the clothes become more boring or hillarious, the backgrounds become beautifully/excrutiatingly detailed. Yasuko-sensei has a really unique & destinguishable character design that hold partially onto the original 70's design but can't be mistaken for anyone elses. Character wise, James gives up on Dorian in persuit of money & becomes cheaper than ever before, Dorian's hopes of romance become a long sad joke that can lead to some really funny let's-embarass-Klaus moments, more bad crossdressing, & a hillarious American Maxwell-Smart-ish agent will really make things get funny. It still has lots of flirting every other-other book, but it's more of an adventure that bounces back & forth between serious & hillarious. Personally, I miss her 70's shoujo style, really HATE the CMX covers, & there have been some blatant translation errors; for instance on page 10, "He's one for us older gals" should have been "I hope he's into older men."
The Best Is Yet To Be.......2004-12-09
Hey, I thought I might have to write the first review of "Eroica", but I see Sharon Q's already done a fine job. So I'll just add a few cents' worth here and there...
First, like all the CMX manga published so far, this is physically a handsome piece of work: the gorgeous 70s-style artwork in particular is well reproduced. The translation isn't bad either, with none of the grammatical howlers, proofreading errors and just plain lapses in tone that Tokyopop is all too prone to nowadays. (I especially love that everyone keeps on saying "bloody" to emphasise that they're Brits - well, European anyhow).
However, like Sharon Q, I can't give this first volume more than 3 stars, mainly on account of the story. "Eroica" has been a cult in Japan and (through fan translations) in the West for decades now, yet it had a surprisingly wobbly beginning. The opening chapter introduces us to Dorian, Earl of Gloria, through the eyes of three teenagers who, for no very good reason, have acquired super-powers. Aoike also includes a would-be comic Japanese detective, Inspector Bannai, whose deeply unfunny antics are enough to discourage any reader. Add little touches such as the characters taking a detour through another of her manga, and you do start to wonder about Japanese female taste (this is a shoujo manga, if all those floating flowers and big starry eyes hadn't told you already). Things improve, however, when the sardonic, sexy and terminally repressed Major Klaus Heinz von dem Eberbach strides into the second chapter. Two of the annoying magical teens, and Bannai, promptly disappear from the story for good. Pretty-boy Caesar Gabriel, who at one point looked like becoming Dorian's love interest, hangs on into chapter three, then retires to bed with a headache and is never heard from again. The very last page of this final episode shows us the pattern of almost all the stories to come: Klaus and Dorian, after a series of intricate manoeuvres which have brought each of them to exactly the same point, delicately balanced against each other and waiting to begin the game - or is it a courtship dance? - all over again.
My only other gripe is to wish that CMX had followed Del Rey's lead and splashed out a little money on an introductory essay. After all, "Eroica" began appearing in 1976 - not many new readers will understand that Dorian himself was modelled on Robert Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, and that his sidekicks Bonham and the penny-pinching Mr James are caricatures of other band members. The political and social background, too, contemporary when Aoike used it, has receded into history: the Cold War, Bonn as the capital of West Germany, the fall of the Shah of Iran, Russia's invasion of Afghanistan and the resulting boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, are half-forgotten now. But "Eroica's" fun, frivolity and romance have survived... starting in volume 2!

Interesting and novel perspective.......2000-07-27
Though film synopses are not especially artistic or exciting, Fr Blake's thesis of how Catholic concepts of community, sacrament, and symbol influenced six major directors is well presented. The underlying ideas were quite thought provoking, even if their relation to some film sequences bordered on the contrived. Impeccable scholarship in a readable work - and a good present for an intellectual film buff.

Book Description
Black Bottom Stomp tells the compelling stories of the lives and times of eight seminal figures in American music history, including Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, and Jelly Roll Morton. Drawing on original archival research, the authors give and entirely new and more complete look at the music, lives, and impact of these figures. Richly illustrated with rare photographs from newspapers, sheet music, and other hard-to-find sources, the work will appeal to the reader interested in popular music, ragtime, and early jazz.
Reading Black Bottom Stomp, you'll learn that:
Scott Joplin died penniless in New York, after years of attempting to establish himself as a composer.
Jelly Roll Morton claimed to have "invented" jazz in 1902 (when he was just 12 years old!)
Louis Armstrong was raised by a Jewish family, the Karnofskys, who virtually adopted the child when he began working for them on their coal truck.
And much more!

Could be condensed into 20 pages.......2006-03-25
The concept is simple, and had it been better organized the book would have been 20 pages, max. Then the author could throw in a few of his favorite conventions.
Kit Woolsey wrote essentially the same thing in a much shorter chapter in his book MATCHPOINTS 10 years before this book.
Overall, the concept (the LAW) is worth knowing, just be aware taht at higher levels its not as accurate as Cohen and Marty Bergen would have you think.
A fair book on a false law.......2006-03-18
The law of total tricks just simply isn't true...period.
Larry Cohen spends much time exploring this law in detail, and does a fair job, but keep in mind that this "law" is defective, and thus there is only so much you can gain from this book.

According to the law of Total Trump = Total Tricks we see the Total trump is 13 N-S and 13 E-W
The total tricks should be 26 then, so 13 N-S and 13 E-W
However, we see the actual break is 13 N-S and 7 E-W...total tricks = 20.
20 != 26
so, read the book for an explaination of the law...but keep in mind the law is wrong.
Famous & passionate exposé of the Law of Total Tricks !!.......2004-09-24
This excellent bridge book has the fine reputation that it does because it is so thorough and detailed an explanation of the Law of Total Tricks. Larry Cohen is the most passionate supporter of this law in the game; and he does a complete job explaining it, illustrating it with interesting example hands, and summarizing with useful maxims that tend to stick with you after the reading is over. Especially good is his compelling discussion of whether to rebid when the bidding goes 1H-1S-2H-2S-? or even 1H-1S-2H-2S-3H-?. He also makes some good points about bidding at the higher levels with a known long fit.
This is one of the few books we believe should be in every serious player's library; yet it is basic enough and entertaining enough to benefit relative beginners and more expert players alike. No wonder it is an award winning book on bridge!
Winning Bridge Decisions.......2003-06-25
This is an essential book for any serious player. The only concern is that the intermediate player may come to believe that this is a substitute for judgement. Still this should improve the competitive bidding decisions for any player who is somehow not familiar with "The Law".
Those interested in a somewhat different valuation style should look into losing trick count originally popularized in Britain which has been around for some time.
How high to bid in competitive auctions.......2003-05-02
Required reading for any good player. This book will help you to decide how high to bid in competitive auctions. This 1992 Bridge Book of the Year is the best-selling bridge book of the 1990's.

Meet Fred.
In his powerful new book THE FRED FACTOR, motivational speaker Mark Sanborn recounts the true story of Fred, the mail carrier who passionately loves his job and who genuinely cares about the people he serves. Because of that, he is constantly going the extra mile handling the mail – and sometimes watching over the houses – of the people on his route, treating everyone he meets as a friend. Where others might see delivering mail as monotonous drudgery, Fred sees an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those he serves.
We’ve all encountered people like Fred in our lives. In THE FRED FACTOR, Mark Sanborn illuminates the simple steps each of us can take to transform our own lives from the ordinary – into the extraordinary. Sanborn, through stories about Fred and others like him, reveals the four basic principles that will help us bring fresh energy and creativity to our life and work: how to make a real difference everyday, how to become more successful by building strong relationships, how to create real value for others without spending a penny, and how to constantly reinvent yourself.
By following these principles, and by learning from and teaching other “Freds,” you, too, can excel in your career and make your life extraodinary. As Mark Sanborn makes clear, each of us has the potential be a Fred.THE FRED FACTOR shows you how.

Let's be more like Fred.......2007-09-14
The Fred Factor
The Fred Factor is a rather small book that gives the details on how someone can, by its own motivation, get the extraordinary out of something rather common. The book gives an explanation of how the behaviour of someone can change when and if they commit to it. Some of the topics in the book are rather obious, but re-reading them every once and a while makes one reflect again on how we sometimes can go the extra mile and make a huge different.
We all have values. This book is about making sure that we don't forget about these values when we are doing our job. Let's all care and have a little Fred in us..
This book is worth the reading.

Fred Factor.......2007-09-10
Buying new from Amazon is almost always the best way to go. As a school secretary having them delivered to our door is always a plus. You are quick and accurate. As a college student I like to buy used and you take your chances doing this. BUT if you review who you are buying from FIRST you should have no problems. I have greatly appreciated the deals that I have gotten thru Amazon.
Choosing to Make a Difference is Leadership.......2007-08-28
Every day, in every individual interaction, we have a choice; a choice to make the interaction transactional or relational. That choice will make all the difference in the world to the quality of our lives.
In "The Fred Factor", motivational speaker Mark Sanborn tells the very real story of his postal delivery person, Fred - and how he gave definition to his job as a `service provider' by making mail delivery a relational interaction. Sanborn says that Fred exemplified 4 principles: Everyone Makes a Difference; Success is Built on Relationships; You Must Continually Create Value for Others and It Doesn't Have to Cost a Penny; You Can Reinvent Yourself Regularly. All very real and very useful principles, but perhaps the most valuable principle in this story and the other examples in the book is the principle of choice: Everyone has the choice to be a Leader, by making a difference in the lives of others. This book is highly recommended as a gift for those who say, "Why bother?"
Learn to be a Fred.......2007-08-23
This is a pass it forward book. I am a Fred and I have helped others find the Fred in them. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it for everyone who is tired of seeing grumps in the office or in their home and wants to make a change. One person can make a difference if that peoson is a Fred.
Inspirational.......2007-07-27
I own a small business with 20 employees and this book was recommended for "homeplay" for our new staff. I loved this book not only for the inspiration it gave me in the workplace, but the inspiration it also gave me when I am not at work. It is amazing, the small things we can do that have such an impact on others (and also ourselves). I look forward to the presentations our new staff will give me and the management team on this book. Great read!

Customer Reviews:
This book is pretty short, but good.......2007-01-22
This is a very short book: something like 113 pages with not a lot of page surface for words. It's one of those books that should really have been longer (to get your money's worth) but couldn't really be without distorting the clarity of the message.
It is a quick and enjoyable read, and it has a lot of real life examples and ideas. Most of it is commonsense, but that doesn't mean it isn't useful. It is all about the excellent service that a mail carrier provides over his career, and why he chooses to go "above and beyond" all the time with his dedication.
It reminds me a lot of another book called "Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results". We read both books for our workplace book-club and enjoyed both. Both were written by motivational speakers, and both try to work their way into a whole teaching program with awards and special terms and the like. Personally, I don't care for this type of commercialization, and I'm not about to go out calling people "Freds" or hand out "Fred" pins, but I darn well am going to look at the message of the book seriously and take it to heart.
I recommend this as a book that will appeal to a lot of people because it is not intimidating (especially to non-readers) and because it is written in an easy conversational style. (I think it is a good book for reading clubs.)
And finally, as one of my favorite lines in the book said (spoken by Abraham Lincoln) "Whatever you are, be a good one."
The Fred Factor.......2007-01-09
Outstanding look at excellent customer service and what it takes to deliver it!
Fun and easy read.......2007-01-06
This is a very motivating book. I shared it with my team of guest service reps at our hospital and they loved it. It is a fun read and a great discussion piece.

Not an easy read, kind of slow. There is some good advice that we already know, but just don't utilize. I still haven'r finished reading.

I thought this book was extremely helpful with ideas on how to improve service and thereby improve business
