Book Description
The simple question “What is minimalism?” has defied simple answers. Artists known as minimalists have distinctively different methods and points of view. This highly readable history of minimalist art shows how artists as diverse as Carl Andre, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, and Anne Truitt came to be designated as minimalists during a series of exhibitions in the 1960s.
“I can think of no book that even undertakes a comparable art historical account—not merely tracing a movement year by year, but showing how the movement’s consciousness of itself emerged.”—Arthur Danto, Times Literary Supplement
“Many skeptics deem the sixties too close for comfort and hence not suitable for an art history in the grand tradition. James Meyer proves them wrong. Minimalism: Art and Polemics in the Sixties establishes a historical precision and seriousness that many have thought lacking in the recent wave of writing about postwar American art.”—Christine Mehring, Art Journal
“By far the best account to date of Minimalism’s development and the essential point of departure for all future research on the subject.”—Pepe Karmel, Art in America
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2001-08-21
A stunning and brilliant book, this is THE essential work on minimalism.
Essential and Readable.......2001-07-19
This book is already becoming the standard work on the etiology of the movement. Meyer combines a complete mastery of the period's theoretical issues with a sleuth's approach to its historical narrative. Essential.
Chapters trace the movement & examine its major qualities.......2001-07-04
This history of minimalist theory and thought is based on the contention that the question of what constitutes minimalism has remained unresolved since the 1960s. Chapters trace the movement, examine its major qualities, and considers the presence of minimalism as a debate or argument developed in response to works of others.

What could be funnier?.......2005-12-02
This is the funniest book I have ever read. There were times where I had to stop because it was so funny. Here is a funny quote: "When you read a good book it is like a author is right there. Sitting and Talking to you right there. That is why I don't like to read books." Ha! Ha! It gets better. So go out and buy the series (don't forget this one), today!
ONLY IF YOU DARE!
I laughed, I cried, I was inspired.......2002-12-18
Okay, I didn't cry except when I was laughing hard -and I wasn't particularly inspired, but it's still a good read. Some of the stuff is so off the wall - yet it's vaguely reminescent of folks I know. Jack Handey is up to his old tricks, inspiring the masses with his strange twists and if you liked his other books, you'll like this one.
Very Good.......2001-10-03
If you like the others, or just want a good laugh, I would recommend this book.
Just Hilarious.......1999-11-20
The funniest book that I've read in a long time.
Oh, yeah. It was insightful,too.
Fantastic! Hilariously enjoyable!.......1997-11-05
Like his works in past years, Handey creates delightfully moronic statements that make you laugh till your side hurts. While his great style remains the same, all sorts of new subjects are tackled in this third book in the Deep Thoughts series.
Book Description
These three screenplays are based on Kurosawa's shooting scripts.
Ikiru (1952) tells the painful and intimate story of a Japanese civil servant coming to terms with old age and death. In Seven Samurai (1954) the inhabitants of a small Janpanese village employ a roaming band of samurai to defend them. In Throne of Blood (1957), based on Macbeth, a samurai is encouraged by his wife to kill his lord.
This edition also includes a critical introduction to each screenplay.

Akira Kurosawa is the most important Asian filmmaker........2002-02-08
Not only because he is a great director, but because he knows Asian literature. In Seven Samurai, Kurosawa quotes from an important book: Water Margin. Water Margin has influenced Asian thinking throughout the centuries. As a matter of fact, there is a part where a teacher organizes seven volunteers. Obviously, an influence on Seven Samurai. Take it from Kurosawa, who knows his stuff.
Book Description
Intriguing, Inspiring and Entertaining Stories of the Songs, the Singers and the Composers From Tin Pan Alley to Broadway and Hollywood, THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK: The Stories Behind the Standards tells the stories of our most popular songs with humor, drama and insight. This is timeless music written in unique ways that is constantly being reinterpreted by each generation. Isaac Stern made this distinction between talent and genius: "A person possesses talent; genius possesses the person." This is a book about singers, musicians, lyricists and composers taking their talent into the atmosphere of immortality. They are fascinating, and they set the standards by which popular music is measured. They may not have lived easy lives, but their creativity drove them to new heights and they changed the face of American music forever.
Music by a wide variety of artists is covered, including: George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, Rogers & Hart, Paul McCartney, Dave Brubeck, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, John Coltrane and many others. Some chapters tell the story of just one song; others sketch the life stories of the artists. Music lovers will find new facts and deeper understanding about old friends in THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK The Stories Behind the Standards, and readers unfamiliar with the standards will find the book accessible, easy to read, and delightfully entertaining and informative.

Learn the history of popular musicians and songs.......2007-01-30
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (1/07)
"The Great American Songbook: The Stories behind the Standards" is a pleasure to read. The author Chuck Denison has researched the history of singers, musicians, lyricists, and composers and tells their stories here. He tells the history of these people and how their lives interacted with their music. Some of the people written about include: George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, Paul McCartney and Frank Sinatra.
The majority of the people written about did not have easy lives, but it was the rough patches that these people lived through that gave their music an edge. Denison talks about the music genius that this people carried within them. He also discusses those that seem touched by a muse. He writes: "The muses, the supernatural forces of beauty, art and music capture us, and reveal themselves. In an instant, we hear the melody, catch the concept and dream the solution."
I enjoyed reading the stories behind many famous songs from the past. The ones that stood out to me included: "Silver Bells," "Mr. Ed," "Que Sera Sera," "White Christmas," "I've Got Rhythm," "Blue Moon," "Yesterday," "I'm in the Mood for Love," and "The Way You Look Tonight." By learning the background of the song, it increased my interest in what the music meant to the people creating it. I wish that I had had a book like this when I was taking music classes in high school and college.
"The Great American Songbook," is a great book for music enthusiasts. At only 111 pages, I wish that there was more to read about! Music teachers should definitely take note and consider this book as a supplement to textbooks. It will greatly increase the student's appreciation and understanding of the music.
The Changing Face of American Music.......2006-07-20
Chuck Denison has collaborated with jazz photographer Duncan Schiedt to produce this compact collection of stories of the origins of some of our most popular songs.
This work is not an encyclopedia of, nor a complete history of American music. It is a sampler to demonstrate the impact music has had on American culture. These are stories about artists, composers, and lyricists, the genius who set these standards. The book is made up of entertaining stories and background information on Broadway hits, Hollywood movies, and the songs that made them succeed.
Denison covers the whole spectrum of music from "avant garde" to "be-bop." He takes us behind the scenes to share insights from the lives of George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Paul McCartney, and dozens of others.
The author has created a nostalgic journey that takes us back in time to the early 1900's through the pre World War I days. He highlights the "Roaring Twenties" and takes us down memory lane with captivating stories from the days when radio was the center of family entertainment. The popular program "Hit Parade" was prime time entertainment.
He takes us back to the patriotic songs of World War II and the era that introduced the "Hollywood Musical". Denison likened the music of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, and Beatlemania to a quasi-religious experience for the 60's generation.
The collection of Duncan Schiedt's photography reveal moments of musical history "captured for all time, an image of a memory." These images enhance the importance of this excellent work.
Inaccurate vanity press product.......2005-08-02
The book covers about thirty songs. The one song that I know the history of is totally incorrect!! Jimmy Van Heusen told me in 1979 that he co-wrote the song that we know as "Nancy" with Phil Silvers on the 20th Century lot. It was written as "Bessie with a laughing face". Bessie was the wife of Jimmy's partner, Johnny Burke. Later they used it at birthday parties for other woman...and finally at little Nancy Sinatra's fourth B-day. Frank cried...thinking they wrote it for her. This author claims Frank co-wrote it with Jimmy and Phil for Nancy.
Not Much There.......2005-07-13
I was really disappointed with the book. I am an aspiring performer, and have been doing a lot of research on the standards. I thought this book would same me a lot of time. The great american songbook includes hundreds of standards -- this book covers only about 30 of them. You can get all of this information on the internet. Save the $9+.
An excellent giftbook for popular music buffs.......2004-12-09
The Great American Songbook is an anthology of entertaining true stories behind a medley of some of the most popular songs Hollywood, Broadway, and other favorite songs. Brief yet enjoyable and fascinating trivial about great singers, musicians, composers, and more fill this amazing, defly researched and entertaining collection, which includes tibits about such hits as "White Christmas", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy" and more. An excellent giftbook for popular music buffs.
Book Description
Letterboxing is an intriguing mix of hiking, puzzle solving, treasure hunting, and rubber stamp artistry, topped off with the thrill of discovery. The basic idea is simple. Clues, usually posted on a web site, will lead the person who correctly follows them to the secret location of a "letterbox." The letterbox contains a unique rubber stamp and a logbook. The searcher carries a personal rubber stamp and logbook. When the letterbox is found, its finder stamps the box's logbook with his or her personal stamp, and stamps the personal logbook with the stamp in the letterbox. The letterbox is then secreted away again.
There is something for everyone in this quaint, Old World pastime. Artists and writers enjoy the opportunity to express themselves in their stamps and clues, while hikers and outdoor adventurers have found this an excellent way to share their special places with others. Letterboxing has been used for education, teambuilding, and as a way to explore a community's heritage.
The Letterboxer's Companion is a complete introduction to letterboxing. It includes a history of letterboxing, instructions on making personal stamps and letterboxes, letterboxing etiquette and conventions, basic land navigation teckniques, writing and following clues--everything the aspiring letterboxer needs to get started in this fascinating, family-friendly pastime.

A beautiful introduction to an addictive hobby.......2006-07-26
Honestly, we didn't expect this to be an in-depth letterboxing tool, just a neat way to explain the hobby to our kids, and interested family members.
However, the presentation is easy to read and has tips we had forgotten about & find very useful.
This book is graphically pleasing, in an aesthetic format, with little touches that truly capture how enchanting letterboxing is.
It has now become a constant gift for people we love.
You will not regret this purchase if you have an interest in a family-friendly activity with an artistic touch.
The Gate to a New Hobby.......2005-10-07
This compact little book is both a great overview of the wonderful world of letterboxing as well as great "how to" practical knowledge about this hobby.
The Letterboxer's Companion.......2005-09-17
Good material to get you started. Very good reading for the beginner. However, this book will soon be sitting on the shelf as it has no advanced information. Still, worth the purchase.
Run, don't walk to buy this book!.......2004-07-08
My local librarian ordered this book and suggested it to me. Having never heard of letterboxing I was instantly hooked. The book is well written, comprehensive, and inspiring. My life as I knew it is over.
I have bought a number of copies to give away to friends and family as I know that they will become hooked too, so that way we can still do something together, hunting for letterboxes!
For more info you can check out www.letterboxing.org and they tell you all about it too, but the book is just really special.
Who'd'a thunk?? There's treasure in them thar hills ..........2004-03-15
Well shut my mouth. Here's an application for physically active rubber stampers that was completely unknown to me until I picked up this book on a library display shelf. Letterboxing is in the same family of hobbies as geocaching, where enthusiasts use their GPS (global positioning systems) to track down treasures hidden by other enthusiasts somewhere in the countryside. Letterboxing is geocaching's Luddite cousin, as all you need is the clues and a compass. You might go to a letterboxing website, find out about letterboxes hidden in your area, read the clues, and take off on an entertaining day hike with a "pot of gold" at the end. When you find the treasure, which can consist of a logbook and a rubber stamp in a small Tupperware container "under the rock at the end of the fence," for example, you stamp your own signature stamp in the letterbox's logbook, stamp the letterbox's rubber stamp into your own logbook, then replace everything exactly for the next treasure seeker.
The author has done a great job of introducing this fast-growing sport, which is new to the U.S. in the past decade or so. The instructions on using a compass and triangulating kind of threw me, so if I go off on a letterboxing hike, I'll need someone who knows how to use a compass to go with me and explain it.
But otherwise, the book is a quick read, tells how to get started, how to carve your signature stamp, letterboxing etiquette, and answers frequently asked questions while assiduously avoiding spoilers or giving away too much. There's plenty here, including web resources, to arouse curiosity and interest in the activity, one about which I myself knew absolutely nothing before picking up this charming book. Really a good job for the first U.S. book on the subject.

From the supplier: Schools should help their students gain positive values in spite of their constant exposure to war coverage on television since children are still at an early stage of developing political socialization. Students can be asked to verbalize their attitudes towards violence and war, which schools may take as a reflection of attitudes they find in their homes or communities. Children whose families have been directly affected by war should also be encouraged to express their feelings of fear and helplessness.
