I laugh out loud.......2000-05-02
I'm a fan of many cartoonists, but none make me laugh out loud as often as John McPherson's panels. His humor in this book reminds me of Gary Larson, but connects more closely to everyday life. He sees the humor in reality so that he only occasionally has to twist it.

Be prepared to weep as you read Non Campus Mentis: World History According to College Students, a horrifically hilarious compendium of actual North American college student essays. Learn about the victims of the Black Death (who "grew boobs on their necks"), the Automaton Empire, Martin Luther King's famous "If I Had a Hammer" speech, the Iran Hostess Crisis, Zorroastrologism (the "duelist" religion "founded by Zorro"), and Joan of Ark, Noah's wife, at rest on Mt. Arafat. Meet Dim El Sum of Korea, the Vestigal Virgins, "dedicated to burning the internal flame," and Hitler, who "shot himself in the bonker." Did you know a position as "lady-in-mating helped a young girl's chances for a marriage," and "the assignation of Archduke Ferdman gave sweet relief to mounting tensions," or that "the major cause of the Civil War is when slavery spread its ugly testicles across the West"?
Well, you'd better buckle down and learn, then! --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Those who forget the past are condemned to eat it, said Santayana.
(Didn't he?) Good thing he didn't teach today, when college students write that during the Dark Ages it was mostly dark and the Civil Rights movement turned around the corner with Martin Luther Junior's famous 'If I Had a Hammer' speech.
Culled by Professor Anders Henriksson from the history term papers and exams of students at over 30 colleges, Non Campus Mentis may be the funniest book of history since 1066 and All That. It is a collection of shocking mistakes and hysterical bloopers that, like a string of one-liners, are woven into a chronology with all the unexpected wit and juxtapositions of a brilliant comedy monologue. Non Campus Mentis covers it all, including the dawn of religion: Judyism was the first monolithic religion. It had one big God named 'Yahoo.' The mother of Jesus was Mary, who was different from other women because of her immaculate contraption. Great historical figures: Machiavelli, who was often unemployed, wrote The Prince to get a job with Richard Nixon. The social order: Upper Class, Middle Class, Working Class and Lowest Poor Scum. And celebrated conflicts: This was known as the 'Blintz Krieg.' The French huddled up and threw sneers at the Germans. Hitler's attack on Russia was secretly called 'Operation Barbarella.'...Hitler, who had become depressed for some reason, crawled under Berlin. Here he had his wife Evita put to sleep, and then shot himself in the bonker.

One of the funniest books I've seen in a while.......2007-09-13
Some of the excerpts from this book were hilarious... especially the history stuff. Unfortunately, from conversations I've had with recent graduates of our brilliant public education system it doesn't surprise me.
I gave my copy of this to a historian friend of mine and I believe she later gave it to her daughter, who is a teacher. I don't think I have a hope of getting this one back!
Very funny, and very scary........2007-08-23
The book is a collection of answers from student exams. These are from college students with the most warped and bizarre "knowledge" of history. They also cannot spell, and seem to know little grammar.
But it is funny - very funny - until you realize that these ignoramuses will vote in the future. These kids should trade in their i-pods for a couple of good history books.
A great book for the bathroom, coffee table, or just for a rainy day.
Endless entertainment...........2007-06-13
I love this book. Every time I just need to laugh at something completely stupid, I pick it up and flip through it. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Henriksson is a genius for putting this together.......2007-04-26
This book is the kind that'll have you quietly choking on your own spit in the "Humor" section of a bookstore. I suspect it's a major source of a lot of the "funny students' answers" emails and webpages floating around on the Internet.
Now, if only some science or maths professor would make a compilation of similar bloopers (like the time I wrote about "Tyrannosaurus rex growth hormone" on a dev bio exam)...
Hilarious!.......2007-04-03
I actually had to buy 3 more copies! This is a must have for every high school and college student. How NOT to write an essay!

Selected history from College and Graduate Students.......2006-12-11
This is a selected collection of history papers by Collage students. They have been adjusted for publication and sorted into 26 categories, from "Hindsight into the Future" to "The Age of Now". The items are full of misunderstandings and euphemisms.
Some samples are:
* Christianity was just another mystery cult until Jesus was born.
* Hannabelle crossed the Alps with a herd of elephants and thus invaded Africa.
* The five European grade powers were England, France, Germany, Russia, and Australia-Mongolia.
At fires it seems dump but then you get hooked and almost want to top them.
Book Description
Few motion pictures have enjoyed a renaissance like the 1946 Frank Capra masterpiece It's a Wonderful Life. Nominated for five Academy Awards, it was dismissed as syrupy Christmas fare and fell into obscurity until television gave it new life. Today it's an American tradition.
With The It's a Wonderful Life Memory Book, any fan of the classic film can further appreciate its magic and legacy. The warm reminiscences of the film's cast are supported by excellent photographs, providing the perfect companion for any fan of the filmor anyone who believes in miracles and angels.
The book features dozens of interviews and rare behind-the-scenes photographs that allow readers to see how the movie was created. Comments from Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart, Bobbie Anderson, Jimmy Hawkins, Karen Grimes, and many more make the story come alive.
More than a dozen brief biographies of the prominent cast members detail how It's a Wonderful Life affected their lives and careers. "Then" and "now" photographs supplement the career highlights of Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Beulah Bondi, Gloria Grahame, Frank Faylen, Ward Bond, and others.
Like George Bailey himself, It's a Wonderful Life was rescued from oblivion in the late 1970s when it was discovered that the film's copyright had not been renewed and the motion picture fell into public domain and television stations nationwide began freely airing the film. From film remakes and marvelous merchandise to cast reunions and Saturday Night Live's hilarious parody, The It's a Wonderful Life Memory Book explores the adoration of generations of viewers who have fallen under its spell.

Perfect Christmas Gift!.......2006-11-29
If you love "It's a Wonderful Life" (and who doesn't?), then you'll LOVE this book! I was stunned to learn about what happened to the cast and where the Bailey kids are today and what they look like in more recent years. No other book offers the pure nostalgia factor like this one. The author gives us some amazing details about deleted scenes, as well as photographs that have surfaced showing these rare behind-the-scenes glimpses into scenes that never made the final cut. I loved the photo of Henry Travers (Clarence the Angel) in full color, not long before he died. What a treat this book is!! And the special message from Jimmy Stewart at the beginning of the book is pure magic! If you are a fan of this film, you won't be disappointed! This book is the perfect gift for any friends who love the movie, too. I've already ordered several and am giving them out this holiday!
Wonderful but not exceptional.......2006-02-23
There are plenty of surprises in this book. You'll read what director Frank Capra and the players themselves have to say about making "It's a Wonderful Life," and you'll discover some interesting names among those who were almost cast. You'll also learn that some of the film's legends are true, while others are not. For example, while it is true that Carl Switzer (Alfalfa from the "Our Gang" comedies) was the rascal who opened the gym floor exposing the swimming pool beneath, it is NOT true that muppets Bert and Ernie were named as an homage to Bert the cop and Ernie the cab driver -- that's just a coincidence. In spite of the book's rather crowded layout and lackluster production, if you love "It's a Wonderful Life" and/or if you collect IAWL memorabilia, you'll want to have this book.
A Wonderful Review of a Wonderful Book.......2005-12-28
Cox's "It's a Wonderful Life: A Memory Book" is an excellent addition to the movie buff's collection, and to fans of this exceptional film. The book is packed with stunning photographs (many never seen before), interesting tid-bits about the making-of, backstory on not only the fine performances of James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, but the character actors that helped make Capra's touching film so memorable and the holiday favorite it has become--almost 60 years later. It is well-researched and richly-written. This is a perfect gift year-round for any reason. It is one of Cox's best!
It's a wonderful book!.......2005-07-20
I have to admit that I wasn't much of an "It's a Wonderful Life" fan....until now. I had the pleasure of meeting Karolyn Grimes (little ZuZu Bailey) recently. She is such a warm and lovely person and spoke of IAWL with such passion that I bought the DVD the next night and watched it with new eyes. Now I'm hooked.
I was so delighted to find this book, to learn even more about this classic movie. After reading the book, I had to watch the DVD again.
Even if you're just a casual viewer of the movie, you'll still love this book. It's incredibly well-researched and jam-packed with beautiful photographs. Stephen Cox has a way with words. You feel like you're sitting with an old friend. His books are like comfort-food for the mind!
Awesome book!!!!!.......2005-01-15
I totally loved this book!- I finished it in one sitting- I was facinated with all of the little tidbits that I wasnt aware of: H.B. Warner being sauced when he filmed the loss of his son scene- I was especially impressed with the very rare colored photos in the mid section of the book. I have read almost every one of this author's books but this one is a special holiday treat!

The definitive word on IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.......2006-12-10
If you want to hear "from the horses mouth" about It's A Wonderful Life then this CD is for you.
You hear Frank Capra talk about the movie for almost 30 minutes in a Q&A setting. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed speak about it too. Other cast and crew members tell their stories about working on this classic movie. Karolyn Grimes(ZuZu) share lots of interesting trivia. This 90 minute audio book, which is kinda like a documentery, is told from stories compiled by Jimmy Hawkins who played the youngest Bailey kid(Tommy). He shares stories only a real insider would know. You find out from the start where this story came from and follow its journey from beginning to the present. Its a classic itself. A must for any IAWL collector or movie historian. A+

Fantastic Book.......2005-06-14
I read this book, along with "Casino Operations Management" by Kilby, Fox, and Lucas. Both books were EXTREMELY helpful. They both start by assuming you know nothing about the gaming industry. They then show you the history and the evolution of the industry and then take you under the covers to show you the hows and whys of casino management and its decisions. I would HIGHLY recommend both books to anyone looking to gain insight into this fascinating industry.

If you are tired of struggling to make ends meet but don't know a 401(k) from Special K, this book is for you. Aimed specifically at "Generation Broke"--those in their twenties and thirties who are working yet buried in credit card debt and student loans--this user-friendly guide offers a clear introduction to practical investing and money management techniques that can turn even a dismal financial situation around. Bestselling author Suze Orman has a knack for taking the fear out of money matters, and in The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous &: Broke, she shows readers how to set priorities and achieve goals, whether it is to buy a house or save for retirement or pay for a child's education. She also offers inspiration to readers to face their financial problems and get started on a solution. After all, there is good news: young people still have the time to correct problems so that they will never be broke again. Readers who find terms such as diversification and IRA rollover scary--or worse, unimportant--will learn much from this book.
In these pages, Orman clearly and succinctly explains what a FICO score is and why it's so important, offers the lowdown on stocks and mutual funds, provides career advice, and offers lots of tips on dealing with student loan debt, saving money even when times are tight, debt consolidation strategies, and the safest way for newlyweds to merge their finances. She also offers information on credit cards, including why canceling cards is not a good idea, when it makes sense to use them, and the best strategies for paying them off. It may not be the only money book you'll ever need, but it's an excellent place to start. --Shawn Carkonen

Great Book for young people just starting out.......2007-10-05
I am a 25 year old single mother of one little girl. I found the information in this book very helpful. I now have to tools to set myself and my daughter on the right path to a debt free life style. I highly recommend this book.
Easy to read and Good Information.......2007-10-05
Initially I watched her show: YFB on public television. It had great information for the young adult: students, recent grads, couples, first time homeowners. I like her style of teaching, she is interesting and brings a good perspective to her clients. I borrowed this book from the library and decided to buy it for my own collection. This book could be more in depth, but it is a great overview. If you want to know more about a particular subject you can check out her other books or videos. Suze has a way of making you feel okay about your particular money situation, and offers reasonable advice. I think to myself, "yeah, I can save money. Yeah...I can own a home." I definitely recommend this book as well as the video.
A Great Gift.......2007-09-15
While reading this book, I kept thinking "Wow! I wish I had known this when I was in my 20's!" So, I promptly bought 3 copies and sent them to our children, who are in their 20's. I hope they do sit down and read this, or at least browse it because there is information about every financial decision they are likely to ever face as adults. Wisdom and good information. It's really the best financial gift you could give to your child.
A simple guide to uncomplicate our lives towards success!.......2007-09-10
I saw Suze on TV about 4 months ago, and tried to take some notes. When I saw her again, I said to myself I had to buy the book, but then found out the CD version and decided to buy it instead. It is great. I have recently started a new job and I listen to her on my way to work. Her advice is simple, direct and reasonable (explaining why instead of just sayind "do it"). I am thinking of buying one for my brother who will be graduating soon!!! :)
Advice from a 20 yr old fabulous not-so-broke college student.......2007-09-04
This book was amazing! Suze always delivers her advice with a bit of humor, some common sense, and language that anyone can understand. After each chapter that describes the basics of all money matters, there is a section of questions that are very similar to problems I hear from friends all the time. A great book that should be on every college student's list.
