Okay, if you simply must read this before buying, I guess there is nothing I can do to stop you. This is a simply hilarious book. There's literally something funny on virtually every page.
Weird and wacky photos, strange advertisements and announcements, and truly bizarre new articles are the norm here.
Truly deserves 6 stars.

I had to stop reading it on page 7, page 12, and now page 27. I laugh so hard, my tummy hurts & my eyes start to water, that I have to put it down! Totally worth the price, and fun for repeat reading down the road. A MUST HAVE!
The funniest book I have ever read.......2000-09-16
I first came across this book on vacation in Florida in the summer of '97.I had just read a few pages and I was laughing uproarisly,people in the store were looking at me.I had to buy it.Now,three years later,I still split my sides laughing whenever I read this book.It's in the same vien as Jay Leno's 'Headlines', it deals with real life,unintentionally funny stuff.This book is surely proof that the truth is funnier than fiction.Anyone with a sense of humour should buy,and love,this book.
A Totally Hilarious Collection, A Must Have.......2000-04-09
The first time I read this, I actually had to put the book down because I was laughing too hard. If you like Jay Leno's Headlines, then you'll love this. It's way better. All of the pictures and headlines are true, that's what makes it fun and the commentary by National Lampoon with each picture is just as funny. My favorite is the picture of the Sesame Street gang and the misprint in identifying one particular character. BUY THIS FOR A GUARANTEED LAUGH!

Oh my god. I thought I was going to die of laughter. The stuff that's in the book is actually true and I could not stop laughing at these sighns and newspaper articles that they had in there. (EX: A man gets killed by a bowling ball) You have to get this book. You can't stop laughing.

Some are more realistic than others, but all are entertaining. I'll certainly allow this book when I start my own nation off the coast of Africa.
Need Something Amusing to Read?.......2006-03-22
I've found Don't Try This At Home to be lighthearted and fun. It's also impractical and seems to be based largely on complete fantasy. What is it about you ask? Think of it as a 264 page Do-It-Yourself guide for the armchair adventurer.
Megalomaniacs will want to skip right to "Form an Independent Nation". In just 8 short pages, Fulghum describes the steps you'd need to complete. Like most of the items in the book, Forming an Independent Nation does have a large number of prerequisites. For example you will need "hard currency", especially if you choose to acquire your nation through peaceful means. Well no worries, just check out Fulghum's section on stealing gold from Fort Knox.
Thrill seekers, there's plenty of material here for you too. Good starting points are "Fly Through the Eye of a Hurricane" or "Guide and Surface a Nuclear Sub through Ice". My personal favorite is "Drive a Tank through a Tornado". Fulghum says the tank is "available from the US Army, contact the Pentagon to arrange purchase or lease". Does anyone have a phone number?

So help me, a lot of this stuff might actually work... Of course most of their ideas would take more time, money and resources than i'll ever have, but they're fun to think about!

Imagine calling Fort Knox and asking the best way to break in and steal the gold. Don't have the guts for it? Don't worry, because Hunter Fulghum has done it for you. He has contacted everyone from the U.S. Dept. of Energy to his local alien experts to find out how you would do everything from Swim the English Channel to Borrow the Mona Lisa to Start an Independant Nation.
Aside from being funny and quite interesting, the book is very well written; I highly recommend it.

Great fun to read, though some of it is a bit obvious... By the way I am starting an independant nation, got this book because I figured I might as well. I was already planning on starting it before I got the book. Getting an island from Nicaragua to make it. Anyways good book. Get it.

Feminist Film Theory.......2000-05-25
Silverman's observations regarding classical Hollywood cinema constantly drive the reader beyond the complacency of a male-centered interpretation of film. Make no mistake about it, her prose is thick, but the rewards of contemplating her thoughts are there for the picking. She extends the thought of Laura Mulvey, and does so by also using the psychoanalytic method. If the reader has questions about the validity of this particular method, then he/she may question some of the ideas that are put forth. However, Mulvey's acknowledges that the psychoanalytic method itself has traditionaly bowed to the father-figure. Her intention is to raise the reader's awareness of this tendency before she begins to explore the ramifications of patriarchal society on the filmic medium. Incredibly interesting are remarks on the "disembodied voice" and its relationship to female characters that can be found in Hollywood cinema. This is the essence of what makes film an "acoustic mirror."

good book, faulty premise.......2001-01-26
This book seems well researched and offers some new insight into the life of Maurice Ravel. However, the main premise of this book is the assertion that Ravel was homosexual. It is true that little is known about Ravel's personal life and it is also true that many fine biographies have been written about Ravel without delving into this subject. The problem is that Mr. Ivry offers little, in my opinion, to substantiate the claim. Still, this book offers much to Ravel fans. Besides, it really doesn't matter what Ravel's sexual preferance was. Mr. Ivry presents some interesting angles on Ravel's creative output. Though I have read at least 7 or 8 Ravel biographies prior to this one I still learned a few new things and for this I am grateful.
