          Book Description

This edition of a classic work by one of America's premier writers offers a new Foreword by Derrick Bell (with Janet Dewart Bell) to the 1995 paperback edition, and is as meaningful today as it was when it was first published in 1985. In his searing and moving essay, James Baldwin explores the Atlanta child murders that took place over a period of twenty-two months in 1979 and 1980. Examining this incident with a reporter's skill and an essayist's insight, he notes the significance of Atlanta as the site of these brutal killings-a city that claimed to be "too busy to hate"-and the permeation of race throughout the case: the black administration in Atlanta; the murdered black children; and Wayne Williams, the black man tried for the crimes. Rummaging through the ruins of American race relations, Baldwin addresses all the hard-to-face issues that have brought us a moment in history where it is terrifying to to be a black child in white America, and where, too often, public officials fail to ask real questions about "justice for all." Baldwin takes a time-specific event and makes it timeless: The Evidence of Things Not Seen offers an incisive look at race in America through a lens at once disturbing and profoundly revealing.

          1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-09

Very disappointed with this - partially my fault as I didn't realise it was an essay.
Had no idea who the author was.
basically vitriolic politics - but a necessary work for anyone research the Atlanta Youth murders.
Not wanting to appear racist but I was offended but a variety of comments.
Being white and English is obviously not a good thing in Baldwin's eyes.
But everyone is entitled to an opinion.

5 out of 5 stars The Evidence of Things Not Seen.......2003-10-28

Searing, insighful essays written by a genius mind with a
writing style so filled with grace that it evokes tears.
Recognition fills every page. These essays should be
required reading in every American school. Anyone
interested in what a writer is, should be, can be, should
          experience this Baldwin.

          2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-01-21

I was hoping for a factual/investigative account of the tragedy of the Atlanta child murders. Instead, this book seemed to be an essay written on the problems of racial injustice and ignorance in Atlanta, America, and the world. Nothing wrong with that, but then I take into account that the essay was written in a most meandering and disjointed fashion, full of incomprehensible references, with an overwhelming tone of arrogance. Baldwin is right, everyone else is wrong and to blame. Not persuasive, just a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Can People of Color Be that Cruel...?.......2000-09-20

This is a difficult read because Baldwin's thoughts come across like a man too perplexed to ask "Why?". And so there are many crosscurrent thoughts, parentheticals that are not in parenthesis, and sheer rage. The question: who could be murdering the children in Atlanta? And has the years of systematic oppression and racism made it possible for a black man to be become that cruel? Has the oppressed become the oppressor?

And I can understand Baldwin's great perplexity...he wants to point the finger at the American way of life. How years and years of being considered not human has affected the mindset of the average person of color. And of having to come through identity crises, legal crises, social crises to be confronted with who...? A person who is this insane enough to be killing innocent kids? Why have we struggled so much, Baldwin seems to be asking, to create this monster?

And so, it is another probing we received from the always philosophical, questioning, always provocative Baldwin.

Why read the book now? Well, although this murderer has been found and given punishment based on the fullest extent of the law, the questions remains.

How have we come to this?

An excellent insight to the early days when mountaineering was done the hard way with grit and determination rather than using lots of aids.
Very interesting background on the climbing of Everest for which the work of the 1951 reconnaissance expedition was vital.

              Book Description

The Evidence of Things Not Seen is a series of journals written by the poet Beth Ann O'Malley from her early college years in 1981 through 1994. In this unabashed and sometimes startlingly self-reflective work, she chronicles the life of a sorority sister in the early eighties' haze of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. She writes about her experiences of travel to Italy, Germany, and France, both as a fledgling twenty-something and later as a married woman. She recounts her lengthy battle with alcoholism in therapy, in the poems that sometimes seem to materialize right before the reader, and other times just in the beauty of a particular bird or flower. O'Malley reminds us with this vivid retelling that creativity is first, last, and always fueled by personal growth and experience.

I enjoyed this book. As a red head and the Mom of a red head, I thought this would be a good book to own. I was pleased to find it filled with fun facts interesting enough for adults yet easy enough for kids to enjoy as well.

I thought this book would be a little more informative. It's cute and funny but I wish it had more information on the miracle of redheads!

                          5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2004-02-19

At last! A cool book about redheads that is hip and fun to read. Besides detailing where redheads came from and the science of red hair, "The Redhead Handbook" had all sorts of interesting tidbits that I cant wait to pull out to impress my redheaded friends.

I am biased, of course, since I am a proud redhead myself. I've passed it along to my family members and they are equally impressed (despite half being dreaded blonds).

3 out of 5 stars Funny but not entirely accurate.......2002-06-24

This funny but not-entirely-accurate book was written by a bunch of self-proclaimed "carrot tops", which makes it a good gift to give from one redhead to another (sort of an us-versus-them mentality). It includes some funny lists - one of old proverbs from different cultures re: redheads, one of lines to avoid when trying to pick up redheads - example: we used to have an irish setter just your color, one with bad (i.e. lifeguard) and good (i.e. prime minister of england) career choices, etc. Also has a bunch of funny anecdotes, including a redhead's trip to Taiwan and a sections about redhead dating.

Where this book goes awry is with its heavy use of examples of redheads that are not. Are we really to believe that Barbara Streisand, Ted Koppel and Woody Allen have red hair? Please. Maybe with Photoshop.

Overall, a funny read but not really as good as I expected. Then again, as a redhead, I expected a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful journey to the heart of showbusiness.......2003-10-28

I loved this book and warmly recommend it to anyone interested in Shirley Maclaine's life. Maclaine proves an engaging and entertaining narrator, her writing spilling over with wit and charm in equal helpings. The book was written after her Oscar win in 1983 and she tells the story of her route from childhood ballet classes to musical theatre and eventually to screen stardom. Much of the book deals with her relationship with her parents and the part they played in her journey. They come across as complicated and somewhat vulnerable characters who seem frustrated that they didn't pursue their own artistic ambitions with the same single-mindedness as their daughter. Overall, it's a great feel-good book bursting with plenty of spark and fun.

                            5 out of 5 stars It's Great!!.......2001-10-13

This is Shirley's best book right next to My Lucky Stars and Dancing In The Light. You really understand what her life was like with her parents, and now, without them, just to hear about them is amazing. I gurantee this book will catch any new Shirley fan's attention.

4 out of 5 stars Shirley will dance forever.......1998-09-05

As usual, Shirley weaves her wonderful thoughts about life throughout the book. It's an inspiring book about what it's like to get older and how it effected Shirley's life. I especially liked the parts about her daughter as she isn't mentioned much in the other books. I would love to hear from any one interested in Shirley and what she has to say.

This amazingly realistic novel delves into the complicated lives of Alexander and Elizabeth, two people who are meant to be. The story accompanies both characters through their lives from teens to parents. It proves that love conquers all, and cannot be erased by time or distance. Susan Lewis uncovers a variety of relationship issues which everyone can relate to in one way or another.
I found this book to reignite my own hopes and dreams, and felt that it helped me to deal with my own situations in life, since reading it.

Wow...I just finished the unabridged audio version of this book...it has to be the most heartwrenching story I have ever read/heard/watched. I am really uncertain about my rating because I am uncertain how I feel about it. I may have a weak heart...but there was so much heartache and pain, almost to the point that I felt like continuing to read it was masochistic. I did stop listening to it at times because I couldn't take anymore. There were few, fleeting moments of joy (mainly at the beginning), lots of twists and turns, so many complex, almost crazy characters. I don't think there was one healthy relationship in the whole story (except maybe for Henry and Caroline). I'll never forget it. It's almost more of a pyschological study of the torment that people put each other through. I don't understand why Alexander stayed with Jessica all that time. Guilt can only go so far...she was a coniving, lying, manipulative, demented, miserable person -- theirs was a codependent relationship if ever there was one. I know reality has worse, sadder stories but I read to escape from reality. The love between Elizabeth and Alexander was very special and real but I didn't think either of them did right by that love...they let circumstances control them time and time again, instead of taking control of their lives. ENDING SPOILER: I needed to know this and couldn't find it anywhere so here it is...they DO end up together...whew!...but that's with a whole heck of a lot of torment to get there. At the very ending I expected it to hold true to form and finish tragically but it didn't. I just wish we could've enjoyed their happiness with them in an epilogue.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book so much I couldnt put it down.......1999-09-30

This book is a fabulous read,I've read it twice.Susan Lewis is a great author and always manages to keep you in suspense.I have just finished reading "Chasing Dreams"and"Taking Chances" which are brilliant. Also you nearly always fall in love with the male characters. I hope there will be lots more like these.

5 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable reading.......1999-06-18

I read this book a while ago but I see no one has done a review for it yet. May be in reading my review, you now may want to read the book. This was the first Susan Lewis book I have read and I have read many more since then. I am reading her latest one at the moment "Chasing Dreams" which I see isn't on the list of her books here. She writes really well. May be after you have read seven or eight of them like I have, like many authors, a lot of her books and characters tend to become rather too similar to each other but her books are always a very enjoyable read and I would definitely recommend this book. Her books have got romance and intrigue, mystery, sometimes murder. She always has an interesting plot and nothing is ever quite what it seems. There is often a twist at the end of her books. I can't remember if there is one in this one because as I said, I read it a while ago.

Today's concert industry is a complex business, a balance between artistry and economics. This book is a fly-on-the-wall insight into that business, offering interviews with leading sound and lighting designers.

I picked up this book hoping to learn a little about the way production is designed, rigged and run for major touring operations. To that end I guess I was satisfied with this book.

However, for those without specific technological know how, I suspect this book will be fairly heavy going.

It is interesting for the gee whiz factor, but I'll be surprised if the average musician can make head nor tail of most of the facts in this book.

                                            Book Description

This work examines the change from live to filmed television dramas during the period 1952-1958 and the characteristics and programs that are most associated with filmed television drama. Along with many technical changes that had to be made in the industry in order to convert live television to filmed television came an interesting social one. The American society in general was developing a growing interest in the lives of ordinary people, and television moved with them, offering more programs that concentrated on the middle and lower classes. Because of the inherent qualities of filming, television began to feature more documentary-like realism, began to broaden its interpretation of traditional romantic escapism to include more outer space and supernatural science fiction, began to better fulfill materialistic desires through well-designed, enjoyable commercials, and began to offer the best dramas and most popular personalities, often leading viewers to greater self-appreciation and richer lives. This work focuses on the important anthology programs and specials that were on the air from 1952 to 1958 such as Kraft Television Theatre, Philco Television Playhouse, and The Hallmark Hall of Fame, filmed serials like Colgate Theatre, Amos 'n' Andy, and I Love Lucy, and the challenges of converting from live to filmed television drama.
