CONFESSIONS OF A TABLOID WRITER WHO DOVE INTO THE CESSPOOL OF HIS OWN MIND AND CAME UP WITH INCREDIBLE TABLOID STORIES
“Some people aspire to greatness. A combination of bad parenting and coming of age in Baltimore, Maryland, at the same time as John Waters pushed me in a different direction,” writes Tom D’Antoni. After fifteen years as a journalist and broadcaster–fifteen years of going after sources and double- and triple-checking facts–D’Antoni was seduced by the dark side: a national supermarket tabloid. When he realized he could entirely make up stories and then quote people he’d just invented–and get paid (poorly) for it–he was hooked.
In
Rabid Nun Infects Entire Convent, D’Antoni resurrects his favorite stories and reveals the (often sick) thoughts that inspired them. From the mild “Newborn Baby Sings Like Elvis” and “Denture Bandit Steals False Teeth from the Mouths of Victims” to the truly twisted, such as “Grandma Turns Pet Dog Inside Out Looking for Lost Lottery Ticket,” “Bag Lady’s B.O. Kills Five People on Bus,” and “Cult Uses Human Heads for Bowling Balls,” they all came straight from D’Antoni’s imagination.

Not as Good as I had hoped........2006-11-17
I recently bought Bay Boy Lives, and enjoyed every detail of this humor packed book, an oversize book, with each page laid out just like The World Weekly News, photos and inserts included. I bought Rabid Nun because it was suggested by Amazon, and the reviews seemed pretty good, and I needed a good laugh. I was very disappointed, when I read it last night. The stories seemed very mean spirited, not funny and certainly not clever. There are very few stories, and lots of blank pages to take up space. The author seems angry at his lot in life and spends more than half of the book compaining and bashing people. I don't recommend this book, buy Bat Boy instead, and buy an extra to give as a Christmas present, too.
I Laughed and Laughed and Laughed!.......2006-02-21
Rabid Nun was one of the funniest books I've ever read! I heard about it in MAD magazine, and decided to buy it. I'm so glad I did. It was a hysterically funny compilation of the most twisted and bizarre tabloid stories ever to come from Tom D'Antoni's mind. Sure, the writing's not great and the autobiography snippits are dry...but what do you expect? It's a book of tabloid stories written by a tabloid writer! Anyways, this book was hysterically funny and worth your money! Go buy it now!
What took so long for someone to write this book?.......2006-02-08
Supermarket tabloid covers fall into two types -- (1) the ones with stories about people you see on television and in the movies, and (2) the covers that are interesting.
Be honest -- you KNOW you always suspected that Dubya, with ears like he has, was REALLY fathered by an escapee from the Roswell alien prison: probably by Jar-Jar Binks himself. But it's always good to have a "legitimate" journalist confirm your suspicion in print.
Tom D'Antoni did more than just HAVE these suspicions -- he ACTED on them. Which is to say, when he had one, he made up a story to go along with the suspicion and traded the story for money.
God bless America. I say again, GOD BLESS AMERICA! I take back some of the things I've said about it.
Isn't this the greatest country in the world; a country where your sickest fantasy can be put into print (as long as it happened overseas and can't be fact-checked), and people will pay you money for having it?
BUY THIS BOOK. HEAR? HEAR?
great humor writing.......2006-02-08
i enjoyed this book mostly because of the irrevrence of the author. in this country, where the religious right and the republicans are in our bedrooms, phones, emails and wombs, it is really refreshing to read something that breaks through all those barriers. i bought a lot of them for christmas gifts and all my friends i gave them to, called to thank me and tell me how much they laughed. i enjoyed the commentary before each story. i mean don't we all stand in line at the check out counter and pick these up while we're waiting? haven't you ever wondered what kind of a mind could spew out such insanity? of course you have. so i say pick up a copy and take a break from the real insanity in the world. which causes me to think about how the tabloids have to get more outrageous because reality could have been an avant garde novel 20 years ago.
Not much of a confession.......2006-02-06
I love tabloids and their wacky stories, and I have always been fascinated by the strange universe their writers must inhabit. That's why I ended up purchasing this book, on the promise of its revelations on the little-known world of make-believe faux journalism.
Unfortunately, this book is not an autobiography, but rather a collection of rewritten/expanded stories originally published in The Sun. These 20-something stories are strewn together with what amounts to a very flat retelling of an interview the author gaves to Oprah. It would have fitted, overall, in a page and a half, and amounts to "My mind is twisted, how do I come up with this stuff, and hey, it's fiction, but it got me some good success with the girls!" That's it.
The stories themselves are mildly amusing, fairly standard tabloid gross-out, tongue-in-cheek stories. As is often the case, the byline itself is the whole punchline, so it's not much worth reading past the table of contents. A few are memorable, but your money would be better invested in this week's Weekly World News.

Book Description
The advent of color, big musicals, the studio system, and the beginning of institutionalized censorship made the thirties the defining decade for Hollywood. The year 1939, celebrated as "Hollywood's greatest year," saw the release of such memorable films as Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and Stagecoach. It was a time when the studios exercised nearly absolute control over their product as well as over such stars as Bette Davis, Clark Gable, and Humphrey Bogart. In this fifth volume of the award-winning series History of the American Cinema, Tino Balio examines every aspect of the filmmaking and film exhibition system as it matured during the Depression era.
Customer Reviews:
Great volume among all 10 of the Series now published........2003-09-24
Balio et al. assemble a fine addition to the Ten Volume Series of the History of American Cinema, conceived and edited by Charles Harpole, foremost film scholar and documentarian. No library, large or small, should be without all ten volumes in the Series because this is the definitive work on the subject.
The Series is published by Scribner-Thomson-Gale company and by the University of California Press. You may have to order direct because these are not discounted trade books.
Surprisingly Dull.......2003-03-27
I had high hopes for this book. The volumes in this series on the origins of cinema, the Twenties and the Forties are very good. This book, however, proved a chore to get through.
The big problem for me was that Balio seemed more interested in the movie companies as organizations and less interested in the films themselves. Compounding this was the fact that he sees the Thirties as a unit, and believes that the division of the decade's films into pre-Code and post-Code, with 1934 as the turning point, is a myth. Thus, to him, the "fallen women" films, Mae West comedies, classic gangster films, and horror films all died out because the public was tired, not because of censorship problems.
Balio sees filmmaking in the Thirties as dominated by the studios and with directors being hired guns. Hence there is no real discussion of any directors. Ernst Lubitsch, Frank Capra and Josef von Sternberg are barely mentioned, except when Balio complains that their films didn't make enough money.
Indeed, he seems to have no view of his own about the films. Instead, he views FILM DAILY and VARIETY as the voice of God. If they put the film on their 10 best list, it is good, and if they didn't, it isn't worth talking about. The idea that some films popular in the Thirties are no longer highly regarded or that some films despised at the time have become viewed as classics seems not to interest him at all.
If someone who had no idea about the history of American film read this book, he would come away thinking that the "Golden Age of Hollywood" was a myth and these films were artifacts not worth seeing.

Vivaldi boasted that he could compose a concerto faster than a scribe could copy one. Despite his prolificacy, The Four Seasons, and the majority of his already published work had fallen into obscurity by the time of his death in poverty in 1741. Most of his music-concertos, sonatas, operas, and sacral music-has been published only recently.
Very little has been written on Vivaldi for the nonspecialist, especially in English. Landon rediscovers the composer in this accessible and musically informed biography while presenting documentation of the musician's life discovered after the Baroque revival in the 1930s. This book includes illustrations of eighteenth-century Venice and several newly translated letters, thoroughly evoking the style of the time and revealing some of the more personal aspects of Vivaldi's life.
"Belongs on the shelf of every serious music student."—Kirkus
"Gives a good feel for Vivaldi's life and times . . . and describes particularly well how Vivaldi has been revived."—Booklist
"Robbins Landon is marvelously entertaining, extravagantly learned."—The Independent
Customer Reviews:
Viva Vivaldi!.......2005-02-01
There are not many biographies about Vivaldi because, unfortunately, only a scetch of his life is known. This biography is probably the best contemporary book on him. It is not only a good synopsis of his life but it also has very good insights on his life and music. Landon's insights are especially good when he comments on specific works of Vivaldi. Vivaldi is rightly known as a master concerto composor. However, his voluminous output also included other genre, notably many beautiful operas and sacred works. Landon does a fine job in his book of commenting on these works also and proposing that, epsecially the sacred works, need to be better appreciated and popularized. As a Vivaldi buff (and there are very few of us) I highly recommend this book.
A Baroque favourite!!.......2002-12-08
If you love baroque music and are a fan of Vivaldi you will enjoy this book! H.C. Robbins Landon has really shown alot of research in this book and gives you details about Vivaldi's work and place in society. When I read the book I was amazed at the documents and letters written by Vivaldi. The illustrations provided in this text gave me a clearer insight as to how things were like in 18th century Italy.
Also when I was read this book I now have more respect for Vivaldi's work. The amount of work he did when he was alive was amazing.(Basically, he was a workaholic!). I am glad that his works have not been neglected and are now preserved.
Bravo Landon for showing us that there is more to Vivaldi than just the 4 seasons!
A superb Vivaldi's biography.......2001-09-04
A superbly written and thoroughly researched book. I found the language superb.

One player is the Storyteller, and creates a story using the ingredients on her cards. She tries to guide the plot towards her own ending. The second edition of Once Upon a Time is available now. It features a full-color format, beautiful new art, an extended card set, high-quality linen-finish cards, and blank cards to script your own endings.
Customer Reviews:
Love it.......2007-05-12
I love this game and recommend it if you have a large group of people over a lot and want to find a way to entertain.
The play of History.......2007-01-10
Once Upon a Time is the play of history. This game IS to tell a history with you comrades and you'll have realy goodtimes with this game.
A favorite for all.......2006-08-18
A friend introduced me to this game and after only playing it once, I knew I had to get it for myself. The very day I bought it, my family and I spent hours playing it. It really helps your storytelling abilities and it teaches you how to think quickly. I believe that children and adults of all ages would enjoy playing this game. The artwork is fantastic and I love that they provide blank cards for you to come up with your own story elements. As a writer, I also find the storytelling helpful in exercising my own creative talents. Everyone should at least play it once. I warn you, its very easy to get hooked after only one time!
Fun, but not for everybody.......2006-02-09
In this game, you have to get rid of your cards by telling a story in which the elements on the cards are used. As you use the elements, then you can discard your cards. The aim is to tell the story in such a way that you reach the ending on your card. Other players may interrupt at certain times, so everyone has a chance to join in the storytelling fun.
The downside of this game is that it isn't for everybody. Those who don't start the game with the right attitude, won't have any fun with this game and will drag it down. This game would probably work best with children or with adults who are into roleplaying. Definitely not for those who aren't creative.
Fun, challenging, makes you think.......2006-01-19
This is a rare and unique game. We've played it with our seven-year old daughter, and had a lot of fun. Here are my caveats:
* Make sure you read the rules thoroughly-particularly regarding BOTH ways of interrupting.
* Give the younger kids a bit of leeway, in both time and critical judgement of their story line.
* Don't give any leeway to adults!
This one makes you think. Have fun!
Book Description

In yet another page-turner, New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed management expert Patrick Lencioni addresses the costly and maddening issue of silos, the barriers that create organizational politics. Silos devastate organizations, kill productivity, push good people out the door, and jeopardize the achievement of corporate goals.
As with his other books, Lencioni writes Silos, Politics, and Turf Wars as a fictional—but eerily realistic—story. The story is about Jude Cousins, an eager young management consultant struggling to launch his practice by solving one of the more universal and frustrating problems faced by his clients. Through trial and error, he develops a simple yet ground-breaking approach for helping them transform confusion and infighting into clarity and alignment.

The value of having a common definition of Performance.......2007-08-22
A short, well written, story about a most common business problem - lack of or differing definitions of performance by the senior leadership team. Using a common complaint heard within most businesses - the performance damage done by "silos" between departments, divisions, units, or whatever you call any internal enterprise - Author and consultant Patrick Lencioni again uses the popular business narrative format to show how the lack of a common definition of performance within the leadership team (even when they like each other and want to be a strong leadership team) will cause the organization to be pulled apart and under perform. He then goes on to solve the problem by getting the team to agree a singular, near-term problem they need to solve (thematic goal) and are willing to unit behind.
Although one can question if this condition can be solved in a two-hour meeting, as the hero of the story does; Lencioni's solution components - the thematic goal, a set of defining objectives, a set of ongoing standard operating objectives, and subsequent metrics - is a concept with practical merit. As with most business narratives, the single theme skips over the many other real-life business issues, making the solution seem more powerful and easier to implement than business reality often allows. The story does, however, identify a very real problem of leadership team members each defining performance from their individual perspectives and provides the beginning of the solution. The book is recommended for leadership teams.
Another Lencioni classic.......2007-08-14
Lencioni has written a very good fable that depicts the typical "silos" or turf wars that take place in any organization. Using several different case scenarios, Lencioni does a great job in describing the subtleties of turf wars and places the blame square at the top of the organization. (The ground troops are simply doing their jobs as described for them by their bosses.)
The answer to the turf war, according to Lencioni, is a thematic goal. This is not to be confuse with a vision statement or a BHAG (big fat hairy goal), as Porras and Collins describe. But it is more than strategic goals and objectives. I must admit, this was a new concept for me and I'm not quite sure of the concept even after reading Lencioni's concept.
Lencioni clearly states that a thematic goal does not exclude the need to develop a good, functioning executive team (cf. Dysfunctions of Teams). Indeed, good executive teams are a priority for Lencioni. But contends that even well functioning teams with good personal relationships will sometimes have organizational/structural weaknesses that allow "silos" or turf wars to develop.
Overall, Lencioni has written a very readable book that clearly describes the problem of politics among divisions in an organization. But the concept of a "thematic goal" (as opposed to organizational vision) is still a bit vague to me -- but it is clearly not to be dismissed.
Silos, Politics and Turf Wars.......2007-07-23
This book was reader friendly, very easy to navigate, and it was interesting and informative.I have used it as an educational tool.
Quick Read, Great Message.......2007-07-22
Told as a "story", this book has tremendous lessons for any company dealing with Silos in their organization
