Book Description
An incisive exploration of the still life genre as artists have rediscovered and reshaped it in the 20th century, Objects of Desire proves that despite the century's hostility toward older aesthetic conventions, avant-garde artists of many schools have made of the still life a vital opportunity for invention. From Matisse, Picasso, and Braque to the Dadaists, Surrealists, and Pop artists and finally to contemporary creators like Cindy Sherman and Charles Ray, the still life has hardly led a stolid, stable, or staunch existence. Originally a subject reserved for painting, the genre has progressively invaded the arena of sculpture, its themes reinvented in the provocative assemblages called "readymades," its forms recast continuously into the present. Published to accompany a major 1997 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Objects of Desire traces a radical rethinking of the genre in terms of subject matter and formal invention.

Dilbert in the Artplace.......2006-11-02
While doing research for an essay on the "Search for Postmodernism in a Modernist World," I purchased Ms Rowell's book, curiously titled Objects of Desire. At the very least, it was a questionable investment. However, it is indicative of what is wrong with the world of modern art [or even postmodern art] where pretentious jargon takes the place of actual description, reason or discussion as an excuse for art works that in the end are just boring.
At the time of the book's publication, Ms Rowell was allegedly a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her explanation of Postmodernism gets at the heart of the matter in such a way that I am compelled to quote her at length, in particular her explanation regarding the bridge between pastiche and schizophrenia:
"The possibility of pastiche -- its neutrality and blankness - presupposes that individualism is dead. The copy is impersonal; the model is either indifferent, forgotten, or never existed. High modernism, however, was "predicated on the invention of a personal private style... This means that the modernist aesthetic is in some way a unique personality and individuality, which can be expected to generate its own unique vision of the world, and to forge its own unique, unmistakable style." Yet today, scientists, social scientists, and cultural critics are "exploring the notion that that [sic] kind of individualism and personal identity is a thing of the past; that the old individual or individualist subject is `dead'; and that one might even describe the concept of the unique individual and the theoretical basis of individualism as ideological." Thus the old models of modernism are no longer viable. As we know, schizophrenia is defined as a basic breakdown of relationships - because objects in a perceptual field, for example and between words and their meaning or content, or between words and each other as a continuous fabric of meaning in a linguistic system. As a result, the schizophrenic has no concept of time as linear, interconnected, and sequential, and none either of personal identity as a selection and interrelation of certain specific human potentials at the expense of others. Conversely, because the schizophrenic does not (indeed cannot) search for meaning behind the object, behind the word, or within the unhierarchical unfolding of the field of experience, he or she has an experience of the present and of its objects that is "overwhelmingly vital and `material'... ever more material - or better still, literal - ever more vivid in sensory ways." ... Pashtiching the objects of desire of our traditional landscape, they set a film of meaning (or nonmeaning) between themselves and ourselves. In their deliberate displacement and disconnection from familiar circuits of meaning - whether aesthetic or real - these surrogates or simulacra embody another register of experience, that of the signs and systems of the postmodern world." [Rowell, 194-195]
Is there anything more that can be added after such an erudite analysis? Perhaps there is. However, the analysis does cause one to ask a number of questions. Did anyone buy this book for anything other than the pictures? How does one get a job as a curator in a major museum? And more to the point, was there an editor, or was the editor on vacation when page after page of turgid, incoherent and virtually incomprehensible pseudo-intellectualism made its way to print? Or perhaps this presentation is meant to be a literary representation of Postmodernism, most likely a parody of postmodern Deconstructionist style. One can only hope that this is satire - the world of Dilbert in the "artplace." Dramatic readings of her text have provided considerable entertainment for my friends and family, who found it quite amusing.

"A trucker got his rig caught under a low overpass and a cop comes along. 'You get your rig stuck?' 'Nope,' says the trucker. 'I was delivering this overpass and ran out of gas.' Here's Your Sign!"
More than the other three members of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, Bill appeals to women and his routines center around family relationships. In addition to more than 200 of Bill Engvall's favorite "Here's Your Sign," jokes, at least 50 of which will be illustrated, this book contains Bill's funniest product warnings such as the fan-belt package that says, "Stop motor before applying the product," and a few of his best stories.
The cover of the book will have an actual plastic "I'm Stupid!" sign affixed to the cover.
Customer Reviews:
...here's your sign..........2006-06-10
After watching Blue Collar Comedy Tour (The Movie) many times, I was disappointed with the book. I'm a huge fan of bill Engvall's Here's Your Sign segment on the movie, but the book just wasn't the same. It's funnier on TV when you can hear Bill Engvall's voice, and the audience reaction. The jokes in the book just weren't that funny, partially because they weren't delivered live.
I did enjoy the segments with personal stories, as opposed to Here's Your Sign jokes. The personal jokes were very funny, and I laughed a lot.
This book is one you'll kind of have to flip through...reading it straight through gets boring.
Laugh till it hurts.......2006-03-09
When I read this book I thought I was going to hurt myself. The next best thing to this book is seeing Bill Engvall in person.
Down Home Funny.......2005-10-05
As I read this book, I could hear Mr. Engvall's voice. His delivery and timing are as good in his writing as in his shows. You will find a piece of yourself in many of these hilarious stories. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but Brett's story deserves better than this.......2006-07-23
Though I enjoy Nina's book here, after meeting and talking to Brett personally, I must be frank:HIS story is simply TOO GOOD to be muddied up by Nina's rather boring attempt at a "memoir" here.
Nina really does not have(for my money)a particularly interesting personal story to tell. It's pretty typical of British youth at that time, and she offers no real inspiring insights in the telling of it. To that point, all I can say is that if she thinks HER youth was soul-crushing then she should have tried MINE on for size.
On the other hand, BRETT'S story is anything BUT mundane. It is too many things to sum up in just one word, but INSPIRING certainly leaps to my mind. Brett is a born storyteller:animated, funny, insightful and refreshingly candid. After talking to him, I can only hope that someday he writes HIS OWN biography;it will be WELL WORTH READING!
I give this four stars, for the parts dealing with Brett's story. Nina's story, IMHO, rates a ZERO. HOWEVER, I do congratulate her for writing this, thereby helping to awaken new interest in Brett-both personal and professional-to the general public. To borrow a quote from David Johansen, Brett is surely a "miracle of God's creation!"
A Superb Music Trash-Burn Memoir.......2006-04-05
Toppermost of my pile of current favourites is Nina Antonia's The Prettiest Star: Whatever Happened to Brett Smiley. Nina Antonia's book is a total joy - she is just a wonderful writer - pithy, acerbic and very frank. It's a bit hard to categorise, but I would say memoir is probably the best genre for it. It starts in 1974 when Antonia is a 14 year old girl living in Merseyside in a rather queasily oppressive family setting (instant recognition factor for anyone who suffered controlling parents) - she sees for a few fleeting incandescent moments a glam wannabe (one Brett Smiley) make his debut TV appearance on the Russel Harty show. He's a gorgeous pink-suited butterfly there under the auspices of Andrew Loog Oldham (the guy behind the Stones). He sings his song and sets young Nina's world ablaze. Of course, like all parables, he vanishes leaving a scent of glitter (and maybe just a hint of sulphur brimstone) behind him and in Nina's mind a question: where did he go. Nina is a skilled writer and has constructed a glorious evanescent text from these alluring moments. The book is a double narrative, charting her redemption through music in an extraordinary journey in the direction of Johnny Thunders on the one hand and Brett Smiley's grim descent to somewhere closer to skid row on the other. Her writing is humane and incisive and oh-so-good: she avoids sensationalism and mawkishness at all costs and is able to draw you into the story of this far-from-appealing man. Most of all, though, this is Antonia's story and bless her for telling it. It doesn't matter whether you know diddly-squat about the Glam era, eyeliner or platforms - this is just a stunning modern parable about our throw-away world. Read it without hesitation or delay!

But do they roll high?.......2007-01-13
This is a bag of 10 sided dice for use with Mage: the Awakening. If you are new to the Storyteller system, you probably need a lot more d10s than you already have lying around. The color is marbled blue with gold for failures (1-7) and white for successes (8-10). This is actually contrary to the images that WHite Wolf distributes. The bag is blue felt with the Mage logo (pentacled skull) painted on. If you, like me, have an unreasonable need to roll dice for characters that is pertinent to their species (mortals/vampire/werewolf/mage) then these will do nicely.
Book Description
For baby boomers reaching retirement age and the millions of other Americans who keep most of their assets invested in IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar retirement plans, financial expert Ed Slott's eye-opening guide is a must-have resource to help protect those savings from the IRS. Through his simple 5-Step Action Plan, Ed Slott's down-to-earth, clear-cut, and often humorous approach shows everyday investors how to distribute, roll over, withdraw, and secure their retirement savings (and their inherited nest eggs) against Uncle Sam.
Customer Reviews:
Little known retirement bombshells.......2007-08-16
This book outlines what boomers (and others) should know about their retirement finances. Few know what the problems might be when they transfer or start accessing retirement money. Fewer still will bother to find out and even fewer will act on the information. What "The Retirement Savings Time Bomb.." discusses is how to prevent unneccessary taxable acts when accessing the money and even how to access funds early (before 59 1/2). Finally, he talks over reasons for converting a regular IRA to a Roth IRA if it makes economic sense and how to minimize taxation in the long run. If I have one critical comment about the book, I feel the information is directed toward individuals who have more retirement savings than I. Regardless, I still will benefit from the information provided.
Complicated Laws Made Accessible.......2007-03-11
Who would have thought that something as simple-sounding as an IRA would require care and feeding and attention to avoid a huge tax consequence down the road. Ed Slott holds your hand through an extremely detailed explanation of the complicated and changing maze of our IRS Code that can cost you much of your investment's earnings if you don't know how to navigate. And just when you thought you were beginning to understand the beast, he unveils yet another aspect of the law that's waiting to reach out and grab you. You'll refer to his richly loaded chapters again and again as you plan and construct your financial defenses.
IRAs Explained in Plain English.......2007-02-02
As a financial planner I know that IRAs are perhaps the most complicated area of finance. I also understand that mistakes in IRA planning can cost your family hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. Ed Slott is THE IRA expert and is able to explain IRA issues in plain english.
Matthew Tuttle, author of "Financial Secrets of my Wealthy Grandparents"
Retirement Savings Time Bomb.......2007-01-09
I am in the financial service business and really found this book to be of great help to me. There were many of the rules about IRAs that were werer unfamiliar to me. It has helped me professionally. I recommend it to anyone that has an IRA or is going to roll over a pension plan or 401(k)plan. It will save you from making some mistakes that could be costly in taxes.
Good information.......2007-01-06
It's not the kind of book you like to read but it was one we needed to read. It did the job well, every one our age, mid 70's, need to think about the end times and be sure you have mad sound decisions, it helped with our piece of mind.
