Book Description

Updated to include new artists' voices of the 1990s: The unparalleled record of the contributions of women artists to American art of the twentieth century

At the end of the 1970s, Eleanor Munro embarked upon a series of interviews with some of the leading visual artists in the nation, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Alice Neel, Helen Frankenthaler, Louise Bourgeois, and Jennifer Bartlett. The resulting portraits led to a book as significant and exciting as the artists within it. Now Munro has added a new generation of women-including Kiki Smith and Julie Taymor-and a new introduction to her landmark entry in the literature of visual art, ensuring its status as an invaluable resource well into the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars Janson of psychoaesthetic art history.......2001-01-18

As Louise Bourgeois said, "Mai, c'est serieux!" Munro covers Cassatt through Kikki Smith using history rather than iconography and enlivens the telling with her many terrific interviews. Especially interesting was the difference between her experience interviewing women artists in the nineties versus interviewing them in the seventies. Munro found it extremely hard to reach these new celebrity artists who, like men, wouldn't share their fears or failures for history. A classic which happens to be about women.

            Book Description

The Bauhaus is, to this day, still regarded as the nucleus of the early 20th century German avant-garde, and no artist practiced its principles more enthusiastically in the United States than Austrian-born Herbert Bayer (1900-1985). Conceived as an artist utopia, the Bauhaus developed from a "blend of profound depression resulting from the lost war with its breakdown of intellectual and economic life, and the ardent hope and desire to build up something new from these ruins". The history of the Weimer Republic, founded in 1919 as the first German Democracy, and the creation of the Bauhaus in the same year, were both subject to the slow political decline that carried them to their grave in Berlin in 1933. Though it was in existence for only 14 years, the ideology carried forth from the Bauhaus would have a profound impact both in Europe and the United States. For more than six decades, Bauhaus ideals stood at the core of Herbert Bayer's artistic approach in the belief that art, technology and nature should have a unity. Along with his contemporaries (Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy), Bayer believed in the importance of the "total artist" moving between private, autonomous expression and public projects which made them unique in their creative depth and scope. 5 out of 5 stars A priceless photo-index of Eugene Smith's work.......2003-06-06

After Eugene Smith died in 1978, his estate allowed the Center for Creative Photography (Tucson, AZ) to select from Smith's master prints to create the Eugene Smith Archive. This book illustrates the more than 1,800 prints in the Center's collection. There are 200 pages of six (occasionally 12) 5cm X 7cm photographs per 10.5 X 11-5/8 inch page. The Center's accession number identifies each plate.

The photographs are arranged chronologically and, when applicable, include the name and date of the magazine that published the photo-essay. The Archive, and this book, includes many photographs that Smith printed but were not included in the published essay, and includes unpublished assignments, pictures of family and friends and more.

The quality of photoengraving is remarkably excellent.

As far as I can determine, this is the only book containing the comprehensive work of W. Eugene Smith, truly the master of the photographic essay.

Wendy Wasserstein is best known as a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, but she has also spent 10 years penning brisk, mostly comic, often touching essays for magazines. Here they are, niftily collected in Shiksa Goddess; or, How I Spent My Forties. Though there's much to be said for her brisk interview with Bette Midler, written in the form of a comic play (if we're to believe Wasserstein, the two of them rowed around Manhattan harmonizing on "Shine On Harvest Moon") and some of the other occasional essays, the heart of the book is her portraiture of her family. She immortalizes her mother, Lola Wasserstein, in a few deft sketches. "Always look nice when you throw out the garbage," Lola warns. "You never know who you might meet." When it comes to cards, "Lola encourages sending 'the very, very best,' a homemade greeting card. A personal citation like 'I love you, Gramma' or 'Mother, I promise next year to be married with three musically inclined children, a co-op, and a degree in dentistry' is worth a thousand words."

The darkest, deepest notes are sounded in her essay on the cancer battle of her late sister, Sandra, the model for the character Sara in Wasserstein's dazzling play The Sisters Rosensweig. The book concludes with a rather heroic account of her pregnancy at age 48, which lives up to its title: "Days of Awe: The Birth of Lucy Jane." At her best, Wasserstein is an essayist of emotional delicacy, intellectual rigor, and an unconquerable funny bone. --Tim Appelo

              Book Description

When Wendy Wasserstein turned forty, she made a To Do list composed mostly of items left over from when she turned thrity. The listincluded the annuals: lose weight, exercise, read more, improve female friendships, improve male friendships, and (left over from her second grade To Do list) become a better citizen. At the end of the list were the larger-than-life unavoidables: move, fall in love, and decide about a baby.

In Shiksa Goddess, her first book of essays in ten years, Wendy writes about each f the quests and midlife obsessions.

On diets and cooking ("I was born to order up . . . My favorite breakfast china has always been a paper cup embossed with a picture of the Parthenon.") . . .

On getting in shape and hiring a personal trainer (Sue is on hand twenty-four hours to say, Stop! In the name of self-love . . . She is a fat-free beacon of light) . . . About the rise of the legendary Mrs. Entenmann, who married the boss at nineteen and went from salesgirl to bakery czarina . . .

On the truth of her denominational heritage (the name Wasserstein was changed from Waterson by a distant relative in order to get his child into an Ivy Leage college and Mount Sinai Medical School) . . .

On buying an apartment--and then seeking refuge from it for a year in a residential hotel ("Life boiled back down to basics: work, friendship, and room service") . . . About attending the Golden Globe Awards . . .

On the traditions of the holidays ("I was very disappointed the first time I saw Plymouth Rock . . . I thought it would be surrounded by Barricini chocolate turkeys, dancing sweet potatoes, and Pilgrims in crepe-paper hats") . . .

On MOther's Day and her mother, Lola Wasserstein ("Lola encourages sending a homemade greeting card. A personal citation like 'I love you, Gramma' or 'Mother, I promise next year to be married with three musically inclined children, a co-op, and a degree in dentistry' is worth thousands of words") . . . on Chekhov . . . George Abbott . . .

And she writes movingly about her sister's battle with breast cancer, and about her own pregnancy at forty-eight and the birth of her first child, Lucy Jane.

2 out of 5 stars Audio CD review: Personal life more interesting than the humor. CD Format problem. .......2007-01-20

I have never read Ms. Wasserstein before, but was intrigued. Unfortunately, I found that however great her essays or plays may be, they do not translate well in audio CD. The first 3/5 CDs are largely devoted to "fluff" topics, and the humor is very tongue in cheek. But, I found none of it terribly funny--sort of the usual worn out jokes regarding datable men, apartment renovation, lunch with one's mother, trying to diet, etc. Easy to skip over fluff in a book, but not so easy on a CD. This is made even more problematic by the audio CD format. You cannot fast foward on the CDs; there are no internal "chapters". So, if you take out the CD from your car or computer, be prepared to lose the first 30 minutes you listened to and have to start all over again next time. Crazy! Never seen a CD like this before! The computer indeed shows everything as one giant track... Also, each of the 5 CDs has less than an hour on it. Seems like more could have been squeezed in... they need to fix this if they re-issue these.

I do think overall the CD set is worth purchasing for the last 2 CDs, which are candid accounts of her sister's battle with cancer, and her own fertility procedures, and the eventual arrival of her daughter. For those of us hoping to have a child in advanced years, and fascinated by Ms. Wasserstein's ability to do it at 48, it's a fairly sobering tale. It's not even clear to me from the rather long account of the fertility treatments, which occurred over many years, whether Ms. Wasserstein was the genetic mother of the child, or if she ultimately used egg donation to achieve the pregnancy. It is also clear she spent a fortune on all the procedures. Moreover, the delivery and aftermath of it were obviously trying for the author and her entire family, although there are moments of levity in the account.

              3 out of 5 stars Egocentric Chronicles.......2001-07-25

I bought this book for light reading while traveling this summer. I understand that most of the pieces were put together for publications like New Yorker, Harper's, etc. But really, I think we could live without all the gratuitous name-dropping and constant self-loathing references to her weight problem. In addition Ms. Wasserstein makes it clear, through her sublimated anger, that she carries a grudge because she didn't realize her true potential as a female until she was grown. Hey, me too! It's the same old song, having to re-learn the rules of life as a woman with brains. Hey, me too! Get over it. If she would just get on with the stories, without the long and tedious set-up they might be amusing. But the road she takes us on is an old one. We women have all been down that road and back. Life goes on... Too bad she uses such references as crutches to prop up a lack of cutting edge wit and wisdom. Dorothy Parker, she ain't. This was a book I had a hard time picking up.

              5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2001-06-08

This book contains 25 essays, collected from The New York Times, The New Yorker, and a variety of other sources, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein. The book takes us on a funny yet touching roller-coaster ride from the devestating loss of a loved one to the joy of childbirth. Wasserstein is a very human narrator whose humor and heart allow her to take the most personal situation and make it into a universal truth.

5 out of 5 stars Essays that deserve a very long run.......2001-05-13

Wendy Wasserstein's essays are thoughtful, smart, poignant, sometimes riotously funny, and kind. Like their author they are approachable and unpretentious. She explains in her Preface, " I seem to write continually about politics, the arts, and women's equality. But I am not ashamed of my concurrent interest in real estate, diet, and my mother." It is at the confluence of her dozen or so passions that one is so helplessly and happily drawn in.

Wasserstein's many concerns - all delightfully described - range from the ridiculous (dieting, Manhattan real estate, Hollywood stars) to the sublime: family (especially Mom and sisters), friends, personal history, New York theater (she adores it, and has since childhood), the importance of art to education and to life. "For children, the arts are not simply icing on the cake. They are a way of including everyone in a joint, and joyous, venture." In addition: love, loyalty, and the terrific inner (and outer) life of their author. She has a lot of great friends, and they say some very funny things sometimes. She has never married, and has a take on that state of affairs that is a pleasure to read.

Wasserstein chronicles the harrowing (because premature and complicated, necessitating many good doctors and a group of supportive friends ) birth of her daughter - and the months following - in " Days of Awe: The Birth of Lucy Jane," a piece that is at once poignant, full of information, and at times, so funny as to provoke a side ache.

The Wasserstein family of origin is a constant source of humor and is reflected upon with tenderness that is never cloying - just full of love.

I loved this collection and marvel at the ability of its author to talk so smartly and passionately about herself, to care deeply about improving the world, and to work toward that end - while at the same time conveying quite clearly to the reader that when she's through, she'll be right there - in order to hear what might be your own very interesting story. A great read.

              5 out of 5 stars Terrific--A real treat.......2001-05-13

This collection of essays Wasserstein wrote for newspapers and magazines, including the NYTimes and The New Yorker, also includes one new essay, the hilarious and deeply affecting "How I spent My Forties."

All the essays are strong, and many have moments that made me laugh out loud. Even though there are 35 essays across the 235 pages, this book does have a bit of a narrative thread to it, which provides the book's greatest pleasures. Her essays about her beloved sister Sandra, who battled cancer, and her own efforts to have a child form the emotional core of the book. Wasserstein feels that, as you get older, life becomes sadder and more humorours, citing her sister's pleasure at the weight loss caused by chemo. This is a terrific collection.

The title, by the way, comes from the first essay, a New Yorker humor piece in response to that brief period when it seemed everyone (Tom Stoppard, Madeleine Albright, even "New Yorker" Hilary Clinton--the NY Post ran a headline that said something like OY VEY, HILARY'S JEWISH) was discovering their jewish roots. So Wasserstein "discovered" her episcopalean roots. It's a funny essay in an excellent collection.

              Book Description

Celebrated playwright and magnetic wit Wendy Wasserstein has been firmly rooted in New York’s cultural life since her childhood of Broadway matinees, but her appeal is universal. Shiksa Goddess collects thirty-five of her urbane, inspiring, and deeply empathic essays–all written when she was in her forties, and all infused with her trademark irreverent humor.

The full range of Wasserstein’s mid-life obsessions are covered in this eclectic collection: everything from Chekhov, politics, and celebrity, to family, fashion, and real estate. Whether fretting over her figure, discovering her gentile roots, proclaiming her love for ordered-in breakfasts, lobbying for affordable theater, or writing tenderly about her very Jewish mother and her own daughter, born when she was forty-eight and single, Wasserstein reveals the full, dizzying life of a shiksa goddess with unabashed candor and inimitable style.

5 out of 5 stars How we will miss the Shiksa Goddess.......2006-11-03

Wendy Wasserstein's untimely death in the winter of 2006, at the young age of 55, robs us of what should have been decades more of her witty, generous-spirited but sharp, wise feminst humor. These essays are a delight, giving us much over which to ponder and chuckle, even in our sadness, knowing as we do that the mind and spirit creating them have left us. Read them to savor baby boom feminism in mid-life, and to honor the memory of a great woman of letters.

5 out of 5 stars Very clever smart chick lit!.......2006-07-10

Wendy Wasserstein has won Pulitzer prizes and it shows in this book! Of course it's "just chick lit" but still very well written, well thought out chick lit that's a cut above the rest in my opinion. It's not as good as the Sex and the City series - on tv, that is - but heading in that direction!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Wendy!.......2005-04-05

Wendy Wasserstein, the acerbic, often-hilarious Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright, brings her trademark dry humor to this sweet collection of essays. Ms. Wasserstein writes what she knows about-theatre, New York City, looking for love, trying to lose weight, friends, and making the decision to have her first child at the age of 48.

Many of these essays are magical, but could be an acquired taste. For those of you who love biting autobiographical satire can look no further.

                Book Description

Cecil B. DeMille was one of the giants of twentieth century Hollywood. His box-office record was unsurpassed, and his swaggering style established the public image for movie directors. His career was studded with big-budget epics that expressed a Victorian sensibility committed to uplift as much as entertainment.

Best remembered today for screen spectacles such as The Ten Commandments, Samson and Delilah, and The Greatest Show on Earth, DeMille was often criticized for his success and accused of pandering to the lowest common denominator. As early as the 1920s, the story circulated that when audiences proved indifferent to his artistic efforts, DeMille decided to give up on art and offer the public what it wanted: SEX, SIN, and SATAN with a half reel of redemption thrown in for good measure.

DeMille set the standard for Hollywood filmmakers and demanded absolute devotion to his creative vision from his writers, artists, actors, and technicians. Equally significant was his influence on the art of motion pictures: he had a profound impact on the way movies tell stories and brought greater attention to the elements of decor, lighting, and cinematography. In a forty-five-year career he directed seventy films and was involved as producer, co-director, screenwriter—even actor—in dozens of others. In addition to the biblical epics that distinguished his career, DeMille shot Westerns, realistic chamber dramas, and a series of daring and influential social comedies. Highly loyal to a core group of actors and production staff, he was largely responsible for making screen stars of Gloria Swanson, Charles Laughton, and Charlton Heston.

Drawing extensively on DeMille's personal archives and other primary sources, Robert S. Birchard offers a revealing portrait of the filmmaker that goes behind studio gates and beyond DeMille's legendary persona. Cecil B. DeMille's Hollywood is a detailed and definitive chronicle of cinematic work that changed the course of film history and a fascinating look at how movies were made during Hollywood's golden age.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly in-depth and thorough research.......2006-04-16

This excellent book rates 5 stars for a very factual, no-nonsense in-depth research job on the work of famous director/producer, Cecil B. DeMille. And the emphasis is on his work in Hollywood (hence the title) not on DeMille himself as a person, although quite a few passages throughout this book do shed light on his character and mentality. Rather than a biography-style work with speculation, rumour and gossip, the author of this book has painstakingly searched for, found and quoted all kinds of correspondence and other written records to tell the story of DeMille's career. At times it was quite fascinating to read telegrams and other notes between DeMille and producers or other co-workers, for instance, and while explaining certain events or procedures in the film industry, these letters also reveal a lot about DeMille's thoughts and ways of doing business.

Another highlight for me personally is how the book goes through DeMille's films chronologically, with a chapter on almost every film he directed (and he produced many more) often giving a summary of the plot, which is especially interesting in the case of his early silent films which are not readily available at present. Besides details of cast, crew and plot, many business aspects of the film industry are related, giving an overall comprehensive story of the course of DeMille's career such as how he moved from one type of film to another, or from one studio to another when circumstances changed. Even though this book deals with hard facts only, it is easy and enjoyable to read, and does not get bogged down with too much detail. As a bonus, there are sections of many good photos, further notes and information in the appendixes for anyone who is looking for more in-depth material. For anyone interested in DeMille's work and getting a realistic look into the film industry from the early 1910s onwards, this book will definitely fit the bill.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on an often over-looked director.......2004-08-21

Mention Cecil B. DeMille to many serious film fans, and they might snicker. DeMille has a reputation for corny, big-budget epics like THE TEN COMMANDMENTS or THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. DeMille also has a reputation as a dictatorial director whose politics were extremely conservative.

DeMille was not really that simple of a person. He made some very personal films, some really entertaining films, and even some daring films for the time. Although he was politically conservative, several of his films preached the dangers of religious intolerance. His battle with the Radio performer's union was a matter of principle, and not money. And while the stereotypical Hollywood director was modeled on him, part of it was an act. DeMille had a great respect for his actors, as long as they were professional. DeMille also had a sense of humor, as some of his cameo appearances in films show.

Robert Birchard has assembled an incredible history of DeMille's film and radio work. DeMille was around during the birth of Paramount in 1915, and he was still a successful director all of the way through the 1950s. Using DeMille's original papers, telegrams from studio moguls like Jesse Lasky, and other direct sources of information.

You will read about DeMille's struggles with technical issues like poorly perforated film stock, cameramen, good and difficult actors, and pressure from management to get his films completed on time and under budget. Mr. Birchard has viewed all of DeMille's films that still exist, and he gives a candid review of all of them. The book also contains very detailed cast and crew listings, a list of DeMille's many cameo appearances, and everything is painstakingly documented in the end notes.

I can guarantee you that after reading this book, you will be very tempted to rent or buy a Cecil B. DeMille film and rediscover this master director yourself.

                5 out of 5 stars Just Excellent!.......2004-07-10

Though he hasn't made a movie since the 1950s, CB DeMille is still a name that says "Hollywood" to anyone who hears it. But, aside from The Ten Commandments, it's possible that most people today don't know who he was or what he did. Robert Birchard's book, written in a blithe, easy-going style -- as if you're talking to him -- reminds us who CB was and how important he was to the history of film. Using original sources as much as possible (rather than second and third hand accounts) Mr. Birchard has traced DeMille's career through his films, in the process seeing as many as are still available (sadly not all are). In doing so, he manages to trace much of DeMille's life and the life and history of Hollywood as it grows and learns to use new and better technology to tell its stories. This book is both easy to read, fun to read, and even (gasp!) informative! But don't let stop you from buying and enjoying it!

                5 out of 5 stars Hollywood's Epic Filmmaker.......2004-06-23

Before David Lean, before Michael Curtiz, and waaay before Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg, there was Cecil B. DeMille, the creator of gargantuan epics from Hollywood's Golden Age. C.B. started making movies the year that D.W. Griffith shot "The Birth of a Nation" and died when Steven Spielberg was a kid in Arizona, shooting home movies. In between, he wrote, produced, directed and acted in close to a hundred films

Today, of course, DeMille is remembered for "The Ten Commandments" and "The Greatest Show on Earth," but Demille was far more than that. The Great Man directed westerns and bedroom comedies, time travel adventures (in the silent days, no less), and even a musical.

Remarkably, most of Cecil B. DeMille's five decades of film work survive, and Robert Birchard has seen all fifty years worth, and written about each film in a lucid, graceful prose; Birchard has delivered a feast of information for anyone who's interested in the history of Hollywood. (Did you know that Charlton Heston, the star of "The Ten Commandments," was making less than Yul Brynner? Did you know that during the filming of C.B.'s FIRST "Ten Commandments" (a gargantuan hit in 1923) that the slaves who were supposedly sweltering in the Egyptian desert were actually extras on the central California coast FREEZING in chilly Spring weather, and who bundled themselves into coats as soon as the director yelled "Cut"? Mr. Birchard lets us in on the behind-the-scenes action on each of C.B's films (each movie has its own individual chapter), as well as when the films were shot, when they were released, what they cost and what they made at the box office.

This is a book for anyone who wants to know where American films have been...and how we got to where we are today.

This is a must-have book ! Really, this is the best book ever published on the beatles solo years history !!!
It's like the sequel to the "Anthology" book. The Beatles themselves, through 30 years of interviews, tell their story from 1970 to 2001. Even if you're a big fan like me you'll find a lot of information you don't already know. It even includes some very rare and beautiful photos...
All Beatlefans must have this great new book !!!

In The Beatles Off The Record, Keith Badman has assembled an impressive, 496 page compendium of unrehearsed interviews and outrageous opinions by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Their sometimes iconoclastic commentaries on the personalities, events, and issues of the day are arranged chronologically by year beginning with the opening chapters "When I Was A Boy" (covering pre-1960) and "The Hamburg Treadmill (1960) down through "Apple Crumble" (1969) and "The End" (1970). A massive undertaking, The Beatles Off The Record is a unique, essential, core title for all dedicated Beatles fans and reveals these four young men from Liverpool as no other book ever has -- or could!

It is far better than Anthology, buy this instead! Also check the other book by this author, The Beatles after the break up.

merica is going Bunco! According to a recent article in Time magazine, 'Women are going crazy over this old game.' Now the World Bunco Association offers one book full of everything Bunco players need to know. Complete with rules, scorecards, recipes, and information on how to start a Bunco club and organize a Bunco party, It's Bunco Time! will let readers join the craze-without rolling the dice. Played by 8-20 people, Bunco is a friendly game of dice. Players are divided into small groups and compete with each other to roll a set of 'ones,' progressing in rounds up to rolling 'sixes.' Bunco encourages social interaction, and eating and drinking are a big part of the fun. The old-fashioned game of the future is becoming ever more popular at parties and social events, and new groups are popping up across the country. The cookbook includes recipes for beverages, appetizers, main and side dishes, desserts, and much more, all aimed at increasing the fun!

I flat out don't care for the recipes but the ideas she gives in the book is worth it. If you need ideas for your BUNCO party this book would be for you. It is insightful in that area.

4 out of 5 stars Bunco... your house or mine?.......2005-11-20

I bought this book because I am involved with a couple of Bunco groups and was, as usual, looking for ideas. I loved the idea of "theme" Bunco parties and think it would be a blast to have a pajama Bunco party (winter), or garden tea Bunco party (summer)... and I liked that the rules for play were included, along with who wins what prizes; seems like each group plays just a little differently than the next, and each adds their own fun twists to the game. I was a little disappointed that none of those quirky differences were presented by a writer that sounded like she collects such things and connects Bunco players from all over the world. She put journal pages in the back of the book for us to record our game nights in - so maybe she'll be asking for those for book two? AND I was a little disappointed with the recipes. I was hoping for a motherlode of appetizers/snacks rather than the dinners/meals that were featured. The groups that I am involved with are mostly snackers. We play, drink, snack, and maybe have dessert during or after.

I'm still glad I bought it, and it would be a nice gift to give at your next Bunco Christmas Party, gift exchange.
