Book Description
Otherworlds accompanies a major exhibition of the work of two American artists – Nancy Spero and Kiki Smith – at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK, from 13 December 2003 to 30 March 2004. They are both prominent artists, from different generations, whose figurative art addresses issues of the feminine across history and mythology. The book explores thematic connections in their work – the female body, myth and fantasy, the “decorative” – and situates them in the context of post-War American art and social movements, as well as feminist and cultural theory. Now in her mid-seventies, Nancy Spero is a respected feminist artist whose practice has greatly influenced a younger generation. Her work on paper and her installations are an acknowledgement of the power of the carnivalesque, and an exploration of the potential recoding of space and architecture through a visual poetics of word and image. Never abandoning the figure, even at a time when images of women were thought to carry only negative connotations, Spero has systematically refigured the feminine as collective, social and empowered.Coming from the generation of artists immediately following Spero, Kiki Smith has always acknowledged a liberating impulse in her art. Both artists have turned vulnerability into strength, making art that represents the female body, but in forms that avoid objectification or narcissism, and that can speak to the universal without idealization or reduction. Both artists make art from the histories, fantasies, legends and myths of the feminine, reclaiming the female body as an expressive vehicle of emancipation and desire.Contributors: Rosetta Brookes, Sylvere Lotringer, Jo Anna Isaak, Marina Warner and Anne Reynolds.

Customer Reviews:
Geared for a traveler...........2007-09-24
The value of what you are getting for the price with this set is incredible. There are 11 total discs including the introduction, 8 lessons discs and 2 bonus discs. It includes 3 books (1 for each level) and a case to carry it all in.
The format is good, with English words and phrases followed by a pause then 2 Spanish repetitions each followed by a pause. This gives you a chance to test yourself after the English when you think you've learned and the chance to practice either learning or pronunciation after each of the Spanish.
The books are great, because if you learn like me, they have exactly the same lessons in written format so you can follow along or confirm what you have heard in writing. This has cleared up some pronunciation issues for me.
My only regret with this set, is that the order of the lessons seems to be geared for someone who needs to learn words and phrases a traveler would need first. There are some basics first and then immediately, on the first disc, the lessons go into transportation, hotel, currency, and many other travel related words and phrases. Because you are also being taught some basics and conjugation of verbs at the same time, you really can't skip these sections and come back to them later, or you will miss some of the basics that will be built upon later. So...long story short, as someone who will not be travelling who wants to learn Spanish to help at work and getting along in society, it has frustrated me that I cannot use a lot of what I am learning so far. I can ask where the bus, train, train station, airport and taxi are. I can ask for a one way ticket, how to get a taxi from the airport, and how to get the train from Madrid to Paris, but I can't yet ask for 2 pounds of chicken at the local Mexican grocery store that I frequent.
So...you'll need to be patient. I do like that they alternate a man and woman doing the English and Spanish and then vice versa on the next lesson. This exposes you to different pronunciations and voices and keeps the boredom at bay.
I do recommend this set as a starter, but I will also be buying another to see if I can find something better.
Muy Bueno!.......2007-09-12
I love these CDs and highly recommend them. They are so helpful with conversational Espanol. I've learned so much!
Great set..........2007-08-12
A must have for the busy person who needs to learn another language in a short period of time...
Good Value for cost.......2007-08-09
I've taken 2 yrs of high school Spanish so this was a great refresher.
It has been about 15yrs since I was in high school. If someone is trying to learn by JUST a cd set; it is pretty unrealistic. You should also be using books as a supplemental since most people learn by hearing and seeing. I am happy with this cd set though because it is very much like listening to a teacher in class and for very little cost.
Agreed. Behind the Wheel Spanish is Much Better.......2007-07-01
After being told that I was going 'south of the border' in just two weeks for business, my attention turned to the fastest way to learn Spanish, which I knew nothing of.
I used everything from cheap and small 'cheat sheet' style books like
1001 Most Useful Spanish Words. These helped.
I also used a great verb reference by a guy named Kendris entitled
'501 Spanish Verbs'.
I bombed with a cours called 'Spanish for Dummies' where the dummy was me for buying the course.
Learn in Your Car seemed like a natural for me, since I am constantly in my car. The problem is that the course didn't really teach me to 'communicate' in Spanish. It did help me somewhat though, thus the three star rating.
The two best courses I used and still use are 'Behind the Wheel Spanish CDs' and 'Converational Spanish in Nothing Flat', both by Language Dynamics. These guys really teach to how to speak and undertand Spanish fast an I learned enough in two weeks to communicate.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour

Book Description
Sir Winston Churchill was the greatest orator of his day, the greatest statesman of his age, and the greatest Englishman of the twentieth century. This enchanting collection gathers hundreds of his funniest and wickedest quips in tribute to the exhilarating wit of this great-hearted, infuriatingly conceited, wildly funny, and brilliantly talented Englishman.
Customer Reviews:
I just like old Winston!.......2006-11-11
You do have to think about many of his quips, most are very funny in a dry, perhaps a bit cynical manner. It is sometimes difficult to place his statements in the context of WW-II (I was born in 1944 and I do have a memory of that era because it was the biggest event in my parents lives - they talked about it all the time).
After a session with Mr. Churchill, I often wish American politicians had a bit of his prespective (though I reall doubt they would ever get elected).
It's one thing to know the right words, but another when and how to use them........2006-02-05
The wise and witty words of Winston Churchill ring throughout the 20th Century.Any that knew him personally or had anything to do with him must have waited with anticipation of hearing what he would say anytime he opened his mouth. This held true for Kings,Presidents,Generals and yes even for his family, including his grandaughter. At times, his use of silence could be as cutting
a reply as anything he could say.No doubt, he took as much enjoyment in his words as anyone he was aiming them at.It wasn't all one way either,he seemed to love a well delivered line, even if he was the object.
He neither claimed to be nor in fact was an'educated man',he
was similar to Mark Twain,in that he could cut to pieces, people of much greater formal education,if they tried to engage him in 'a battle of words'.
In his book "My Early Life" he said."It's a good thing for an
uneducated man to read books of quotations" and described how he read "Bartlett's Quotations".It is obvious that he often used and modified others quotations.
His friend Lord Brinkenhead quipped,"Winston has devoted the best years of his life to preparing his impromptu speeches."
"One of Churchill's most famous speeches is that of June
1940:'We shall fight on the beaches,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills...' It is said that,as he paused in the great uproar that greeted these words,Churchill muttered to a colleague next to him,'And We'll fight them with the butt ends of broken beer bottles because that's bloody well all we've got!"
A great little book reminding us of the words of one of the great voices of the 20th Century.
Wit Beyond Comparison.......2005-07-12
I received this book as a birthday gift from my lovely wife. I loved this book so much I bought is twice more as a gift for a departing superior and for a friend of 10 years. Anyone who has a love of history (particularly this era) will love this book, anyone in possession of a sense of humor will appreciate this book as well.
Recommended for a quick, witty read and as a gift for anyone you know with an 'off' sense of humor. We all know someone like that, are related or married to them, or publicly disavow any association with them. Regardless, buy them or yourself (ii case its you who is openly disowned) this book.
Very Enjoyable.......2004-10-23
This relatively small book is divided into several sections with slices from Churchill's life and quotations related to politics, speaches, friends, animals, family, etc.
Here are few excerpts:
While campaigning in 1900, it is said that the young Churchill was doing a spot of canvassing when one of those he approached exclaimed:
"Vote for you? Why, I'd rather vote for the Devil!"
"I understand", Churchill answered, "But in case your friend is not running, may I count on your support?"
* * *
When passed a very long but turgidly written memorandum on some worthy but uninspiring subject, the elderly Prime Minister weighed the thick wad of paper in his hands and commented, "This paper by its very length defends itself against the risk of being read."
* * *
Churchill liked animals; sometimes he found this difficult to reconcile with his fondness for rich food. Anthony Montague Brown recalled that 'One Christmas he was about to carve a goost. Learning it was one of his own, he put down the knife and fork and said, "I could not possibly eat a bird that I have known socially."
* * *
A BBC broadcaster described once sitting next to Churchill as he gave a speech, keeping his audience hanging on to his every word. The boradcaster noticed, howver, that what appeared to be notes in Churchill's hand was only a laundry slip, and he later remarked upon this to Churchill. "Yes", said Churchill. "It gave confidence to my audience."
Excellent! A must for all who study the man and the language.......2003-11-03
The title of my review had simply told what I wanna say. Churchill is such a famous person of wit and words. That's beyond argument. Therefore it's not a difficult job for the editor-author to pick and pack Churchill's words, with some short sentences telling the background of each, into a thin book. Anyway, he did it alright.
I would like to pick some of my favorite quotes for your reference. Hope you like them and can share my feelings of how brilliant Churchill. and also indirectly, this book is.
1. "Trying to maintain good relations with a Communist is like wooing a crocodile. You do not know whether to tickle it under the chin or beat it over the head. When it opens its mouth, you cannot tell whether it is trying to smile or preparing to eat you up."
2. "No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeeed, it has been said that Democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
3. "You will never get to the end of the journey if you stop to buy a stone at every dog that barks."
4. "Virtuous motives, trammelled by inertia and timidity, are no match for armed and resolute wickedness."
5. "What if I had said, instead of "We shall fight on the beaches", "Hostilities will be engaged with our adversary on the coastal perimeter?".
and......many other invaluable quotes. In short, a must buy.

Book Description
Film/American Studies
An engaging look at the development of the movie theaters that introduced American audiences to the masterpieces of world cinema.
By the end of the Second World War, a growing segment of the American filmgoing public was wearying of mainstream Hollywood films and began to seek out something different. In major cities and college towns across the country, art film theaters provided a venue for alternatives to the films playing in main-street movie palaces: British, foreign-language, and independent American films, as well as documentaries and revivals of Hollywood classics. A skeptical film industry dubbed such cinemas "sure seaters," convinced that patrons would have no trouble finding seats there. However, with the success of art films like Rossellini's Open City and Mackendrick's Tight Little Island, the meaning of the term "sure seater" changed and, by the end of the 1940s, reflected the frequency with which art house cinemas filled all their seats.
After defining what an "art film" was in this period, she looks at the rise of art house cinemas, their prewar predecessors, and the traditional film distribution system dominated by the Hollywood studios. She next looks at the appeal that art film theaters had for a certain audience, the efforts made by cinema owners to create an appropriately intellectual and exclusive environment, the role of film critics and censors, the expectations and attitudes of art house filmgoers, and the experience of attending art film theaters in the 1940s. By examining the development of the theaters that introduced such challenging, personal, and artistic films as The Bicycle Thief and The Red Shoes to American audiences, Wilinsky offers a more complete understanding of postwar popular culture and the often complicated relationship between art cinema and the commercial film industry that ultimately shaped both and resulted in today's vibrant film culture.
Barbara Wilinsky is assistant professor in the Department of Media Arts at the University of Arizona.

better than some worse than others.......2006-12-04
this book is loaded with fluff, color, clip art, and facts not specific to flute. The small pieces of songs featured on the pages are a nice strat to something that could be done much better.
What we wanted - required by school.......2006-02-17
Was exactly as presented on Amazon. Came in a timely manner.
Great for Beginners.......2003-11-12
The "Essential Elements 2000: A Comprehensive Band Method" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them. This book comes with a play-along CD. This CD includes all solo exercises.
Hal Leonard also offers (though not through Amazon) band sets for band directors. They are simple arrangements of music that correlate with the book. They are great for the first concert.
There is an older version of this book called "Essential Elements: A Comprehensive Band Method". The book is purple and has many of the same features as this one, but the CDs have to purchased separately.
Great Book for Bands and Beginners.......2003-10-25
We bought this book for our 11-year-old daughter. She plays piano and is now learning flute, her brother (13) plays clarinet for the high school band. The band teacher also agreed on the quality of the book and CD. We all agreed, this book is a good help because it can be read and understood by children as young as 10 year old. Offers easy to understand ways and the companion CD makes learning a pleasure. Living in a small southern town, our children enjoy spending their time learning music. Not for advanced 7th graders.......2003-10-04
I am one of the top ten trumpet players at school. I got this book about 2 months before sixth grade ended because I wanted a challenge. It is now the 5th week of seventh grade and I can already play everything in the book. It's way too easy for advanced students with good articulation and tone.

A Must Have.......2006-12-28
Like the first book in this series, this one stretches your ability and demands more practice. Use it to get better and stay in touch with the basics. Very useful tool, and a must have for any clarinist.
Essential Elements 2000: Comprehensive Band Method.......2005-10-02
Just what we needed. The DVD and CD that accompany it are very useful. A Great product. Recommended and used by our band director at school, and by our private instructor. GREAT!
Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-12-03
I love this book. It is so easy to find a song you want because of the Song Index in the back of the book. I really enjoy using this book with my Clarinet.
Customer Reviews:
Experienced at reading the racing form.......2006-03-23
I think this book is for a weekend trip to the dog track, maybe even a week in advance. That is the sort of book it was.
Good Handicapping Start.......2006-01-03
Prof. Jones steps through the basics of handicapping greyhounds in this book. His method handicaps by calculating the following variables: Effective Grade (determined by assigning scores to the WPS results over the dog's last 12 races), Current Form, Speed, Run Style (Inside, Outside preference in relation to post position) and Kennel (looks at all Kennel's WPS results...top kennels make sure their dogs are ready to race). These variables are then weighted with Effective Grade receiving about 50% of the weight. Based upon the total, bet determinations are made. This approach is good for the higher classes, but will not help you much in the lower classes or Maiden races (which he states). The chapter on betting strategies is rather short. Beyond WPS, Jones covers Trifecta Keys and Wheels and when to use those betting strategies.
Overall, this is a good intro to handicapping. The one tip I picked up about betting a favorite to show/place and the second highest rated dog to win, in certain situations, has paid for the book many times over. Good handicapping!
Prof. Jones a must read for serious handicappers.......1998-10-07
Prof. Jones book is a great basis book to use for handicapping. It will help you develop you system, and gives honest, sound advice. (there is another review of a different book under this book I also reviewed, sorry for the mixup)
All around great handicapping book.......1998-08-12
This book gives pretty good insight and suggestions on handicapping, and the techniques work well with the higher grades.
Perfect for the first-time track patron.......1998-08-11
This book is pretty basic. The first 23 of the 32 pages are devoted to very basic material such as reading the program, the tote board, types of bets, and how to place them.
If you are going to the track for the first time with a group, and you want to bone up on the sport real-quick, this is the perfect book for you.
If you are a serious handicapper looking for an innovative theory or deep discussion on overlays and handicapping, this is not that book.
Book Description
This is the first book that explains the business philosophy behind Toyota's success.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on the Toyota Way and Lean Manufacturing!.......2007-09-07
Jeffrey Liker clearly knows what he writes about. The book is the result of more than a decade of study, on site visits and interviews with several Toyota key people. It describes 14 toyota principles, which go through the Toyota Philosophy, the Toyota Production System, the relationship with employeees, customers, suppliers and partners, and a focus on continuous improvement. No wonder Toyota is one of world top most admired companies!
Very interesting is also the Japanese management principles and mindset - slow but determined, patient, self-reflection, learning by actuall observation and doing, consensus seeking, and managing for the long term.
By coincidence, yesterday (6/Sep/2007) the news came up that Jim Press (American Toyota President)was hired by Chrysler - I can imagine why.
Good Book on Toyota and Lean.......2007-06-30
A good book on the Toyota Production System (TPS) and Lean manufacturing. Liker does a good job of explaining both. I especially liked his cautions about mis-using Lean principles and pitfalls to failure.
Like most business books, the important stuff could have been expressed in many fewer pages. Liker almost gushes about Toyota to the extent that it somethimes reads as a vanity or promotional publication by Toyota - this makes me wonder if it really presents a balanced perspective.
Overall, I recommend it to anyone interested in Toyota or Lean.
Attitude Check.......2007-06-12
Great expose of the attitude of one of the worlds most impressive business organizations. Detailed, but not cumbersome. More than just another "how to" manual. A "must read" for decision makers in any business.
Yes, the book lives up to what the slip cover says........2007-06-10
Any business owner, manager or individual team member who wonders how companies improve should read this. If you wonder why some people love lean processes while others say it does not work should read this book.
I've been a manufacturing engineer since 1981, and I joined a lot of start-up companies because I love the growth and development phase of building a company up. Some worked, some did not. This book has a nice way of explaining what Toyota does and what the others fail to do.
Excellent book!.......2007-05-19
One of my clients saw this book in an airport stand and asked me if it was worth reading. I read the book out of mere curiosity and was totally engrossed. It is well-organized, simple, and clear. While not all companies can implement the Toyota Production System, there are certainly great ideas in this book that can be implemented by any company.
