Book Description
Paper Engineering explores graphic design that extends beyond 2D. From the simplest fold in a letterhead to the structural intricacies of a pop-up book, the construction of 3D paper objects requires as much input as the surface decoration.
This stylish and inspirational book unfolds the conceptual complexities of paper engineering, studying the techniques of eminent designers in Europe, Japan and the USA. Case studies are illustrated with photographs of finished work, as well as detailed diagrams and commentary. Paper Engineering also explores the functions of paper architecture in graphic design, ranging from pop-up books, invitations and point-of-sale to packaging.

waste of paper.......2004-09-29
It doesn't even deserve one star. Not much here about paper engineering. The paper is cheesy, color reproduction is terrible, photographs uninteresting, with few exceptions. Almost all promotional material. I didn't even bother to read what little text there is. I have some wonderful books on paper engineering and will not insult them by including this in my library. It goes back tomorrow.
Save your money.
A Beautiful, Intriguing, Exciting Book.......2003-12-26
A great book on the topic if you're interested in
details of paper engineering. Thought I'd page through
my library's copy for a few minutes and return it, only
to decide I needed to come here and buy it.
Great for collectors of pop-ups as well. The only thing that keeps it from being an all-around winner is the text printed on blocks of dark background colors: visually stunning but unreadable, and the text is worth reading.

Dave Eggers, Matt Groening, Ken Burns, and Conan O'Brien agree: The Onion, that scrappy mag ruthlessly satirizing madcap modern life and earnest newspaper journalism, is funnier than reality. Dispatches from the Tenth Circle: The Best of the Onion carries on the proud, shameless tradition of Our Dumb Century, which won the 1999 Thurber Prize for American Humor. If a real, dumb newspaper wrote a feature story about hell, you bet its headline would be the boosterish one imagined by the maniacs at the Onion: "Tenth Circle Added to Rapidly Growing Hell." When one reads in this book the headline "Arabs, Israelis Sign 'Screw Peace' Accord," one wonders whether The Onion has not, alas, anticipated the news. Their style of yuks is not for softies: the headline "Loved Ones Recall Local Man's Cowardly Battle with Cancer" may not strike the funny bone of the recently bereaved, but it's a dead-on parody of the sort of sentimental slop that cops major journalism awards in our dumb news era. If you can laugh at the preposterous world around you, and muster the courage to tear down without building up, this book is for you.

Customer Reviews:
Truly an amazing, laugh-out-loud funny spoof........2007-08-19
This book is a collection of spoof, "Harvard Lampon" style, irreverent "newspaper articles", poking fun at some standards of the newspaper trade. So we have such standbys as the opinion piece rhapsodizing about how much better ballplayers were in the old days ("In My Day, Ballplayers Were For ****") (except that they don't bother to bowdlerize it; if I quote it accurately, Amazon blocks my review), the point-counterpoint ("Nigeria May Be A Developing Nation, But It Is Rich In Tradition") ("Get Me Out Of This Godforsaken Hellhole"), the local point of interest ("Desperate Small Town Erects World's Largest Fiberglass Chili Dog"), religious news ("Pope Calls For Greater Understanding Between Catholics, Hellbound") and many others. What is particularly amazing about this is that not only do they fill an entire book with such spot-on parodies of headlines, but in most cases, they actually write the article that goes with the headlines, and remain just as spot-on in their parodies. (In a few cases, all we see is headlines with fake "see story on page xx" tags.) The one way in which their parodies are NOT perfect is that they are actually BETTER written and edited than real newspaper stories; I found NO typos in the entire book. So not only are the hilariously funny, they're also COMPETENT.
Hilarious II.......2006-01-30
All of the Onion publications are great - just looking at the cover is funny enough, never mind reading the articles.
The onion provides the finest satire in the 21st century.......2003-03-21
Through blunt and undiscriminating and politically incorrect straightfaced satire, this collection made me laugh loud and often.
The Onion is GREAT reading!.......2003-03-18
What a great price for hours of humorous reading!
Funny funny funny!
DANGEROUSLY FUNNY!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!.......2003-02-28
I laugh so hard at this and other Onion related stuff, that I seriously worry sometimes about bursting a blood vessel or something.
I won't go into details on this stuff. If you're unfamiliar with the Onion, go to [their website] for a brief taste of what it's like.
This humor is not for the sensitive. They push "political incorrectness" to the nth degree and then some. Sometimes my jaw just drops open at the incredibly poor taste in some of the articles, but it's usually while tears of laughter are running down my face too. KEEP THIS BOOK AWAY FROM THE KIDS!!! It is certainly adult material, and I think you have to be an adult who is up on the news to really appreciate the depth to which these writers are cutting. I'll buy anything from The Onion!!

Customer Reviews:
What Constitutes a Day-by-Day Calendar?.......2004-03-19
I received this as a Christmas gift, and frankly, I'm disappointed. I love the Onion, and look forward to reading it online every Wednesday morning. While I enjoy reading the articles, I thought it was a cheap copout to use up multiple days of the calendar on the same article. In my opinion, the point of these calendars is to have something new to laugh about each day. Who is going to stop mid-sentence on Monday and then pick up the second installment Tuesday, only to stop, mid-sentence once again, until reaching the final conclusion Thursday or Friday? Doesn't the Onion have enough captions, in the news, infographics, statshots, news in brief, etc. to fill up a calendar? There are plenty of these in the calendar, but in the next two weeks, three articles take up nine pages combined. I don't think I'll buy this next year, unless the format changes.
Do not buy this.......2004-01-29
This "best of" is simply a rehashing of previous calendars. There is no reason for photos of Bill Clinton in a 2004 calendar. If you have seen or owned previous calendars, you already have all the humor. In additon, the stand came unglued from the calendar, rendering it useless after 2 weeks.

Customer Reviews:
Great gothic pnp rpg........2004-08-25
I first started out playing D&D in the Forgotten Realms then moved onto the Vampire games by White Wolf.
Ive recently discovered Ravenloft, which seems to be a mix of both worlds, and i must say that it is extremely interesting and cool. Its a much darker world then your average D&D game and thats what makes it stand out for me. Horror, gloom, and evil atmosphere is what Ravenloft is all about.
So if you enjoy the Vampire rpgs, or crave a darker D&D setting, then pick up Ravenloft. You wont be sorry.
A Glorified Reprint, but not Without Merit.......2004-06-13
It would be best to start out by saying that this book is, for all intents and purposes, a reprint of the Ravenloft Campaign Setting (henceforth known a the RCS), the Core Rulebook that originally updated the setting to the new Third Edition d20 rules. It brings all the mechanics presented in that publication in line with the 3.5 revision, but precious little (if any) new material has been added.
That being said, it is nevertheless just as excellent a product as its predecessor and does not deserve a low rating simply because a few excited DMs purchased it without first skimming the contents (This is not an insult - I myself was just such a DM!). I would recommend that any DM who already owns the RCS think carefully for him or herself about whether to purchase this book, knowing full well that not much outside of a few mechanics have changed.
Perhaps also worth mentioning is the change in the artwork. It's never been something I've been especially concerned with, but I've noticed an increasing number of people who have a great appreciation and/or interest in it. The artwork in this book as compared to the RCS is staggeringly different, leaning much more towards heavily detailed and realistic (if, in my opinion, at times cartoonish) illustrations, rather than the "line drawings" seen in previous publications.
I'm actually of two minds regarding my singular complaint. It has been said that too much specialized information appears in this text for it to be truly passable as a player's resource, and for most first-time Ravenloft players this is absolutely true. Here, in this volume, is the complete history of Ravenloft and Count Strahd, the exact effect Ravenloft has on the individual classes and their magic, descriptions of the domains of the entire core and most of the islands and clusters, and many other details that will go a long way towards dispelling a great deal of the setting's mystique. On the other hand, if you plan on running a native campaign, giving your players access to this book may be all but essential. It does no good to be a native of Ravenloft and have no idea of exactly how that is going to shape your character's history and past experiences, to say nothing of the problem with a studious character with a high intelligence score having no idea of the basic geography of the world in which he lives. And of course, at the DM's discretion, this book may also be acceptable reading for longtime Ravenloft players who are already aware of most of the world's ins and outs.
All in all, this is an excellent product that has unfortunately taken a lot of heat from people who feel they wasted their money on a useless reprint and DMs who feel (however justifiably) that it has been titled incorrectly.
Excellent Introductory Product.......2004-05-29
I've been a fan of Ravenloft since the early 90's when I read The first of the Black Rose novels about Lord Soth and his time in Sithicus. The Ravenloft PHB is basically a reprint and compilation of a bunch of pre-established matieral dating back several years. It also converts all the settings and characters into 3.5 core rule set for D&D. Obviously for those who have never played or read about Ravenloft before, and are looking to get into the setting, this is an essential text. It provides an excellent, clear and consice overview of what Ravenloft is all about and how to run campaigns there. It contains geographical, personal, and historical information most of which have been established in years past through gazetters, supplements, and campaign quests. For this reason people who have been playing RL for a while may be dissapointed that there's really nothing new thats been added to the PHB. I'd still recommend it even for these people because it brings together all the information from the past and puts it all in one, easy to comprehend source. It is worthy and easily recommendable to both the novice and veteran RL player.
Ultimately Unsatisfying.......2004-01-08
This is a rehash of the Ravenloft core campaign setting for Dungeons and Dragons 3.5. It turned out to be a great disappointment. The flaws are:
- It is lacking in new material. if you are going to pay this musch for a book, you don't really want to find that most of the material can be found virtually word-for-word in the previous release.
- It is not a Player's Handbook. I don't expect a Player's Handbook to include templates for key Ravenloft villains. Player's will see the title, and have access to all the key qualities of major villains.
If you have the original core campaign book I suggest you save your money.

How To Make Money In Stocks: A Winning System in Good Times or Bad, 3rd Edition
ASIN: 0743224892 |
Book Description
How do we find hot stocks without getting burned? How do we fatten our portfolios and stay financially healthy? Former hedge-fund manager and longtime Wall Street commentator Jim Cramer explains how to invest wisely in chaotic times, and he does so in plain English in a style that is as much fun as investing is -- or should be, when it's done right.
For starters, Cramer recommends devoting a portion of your assets to speculation. Everyone wants to find the big winners that can bring outsized gains, and Cramer explains how to allocate your portfolio so that you can afford to take this kind of risk wisely. He explains why "buy and hold" is a losing philosophy: For Cramer, it's "buy and homework." If you can't spend an hour a week researching each of your stocks, then you should hand off your portfolio to a mutual fund -- and Cramer identifies the very few mutual funds that he'd recommend.
Cramer reveals his Ten Commandments of Trading (Commandment #5: Tips are for waiters). He explains why he's not afraid to compare investing to gambling (and tells you which book on gambling you should read to become a better investor). He discloses his Twenty-Five Rules of Investing (Rule #4: Look for broken stocks, not broken companies).
Cramer shows how to compare stock prices in a way that you can understand, how to spot market tops and bottoms, how to know when to sell, how to rotate among cyclical stocks to catch the big moves, and much more. Jim Cramer's Real Money is filled with insider advice that really works, information that Cramer himself used to make millions during his fourteen-year career on Wall Street.
Written in Cramer's distinctive turbocharged style, this is every investor's guide to what you really must know to make big money in the stock market.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for learning about trading stocks.......2007-10-02
Jim Cramer's book is full of usefull and sound advice about investing in stocks. All his rules make common sense and should be easy for anyone to apply in thier own investing. Discipline is the key, and he stresses that. He didn't become a multi-millionaire and get his own show on CNBC by being a dummy. No one can be right all the time, and Cramer is no exception, but he is right much more than he is wrong. And that is all you need to make alot of money on Wall Street. Dont listen to the Cramer haters out there, THEY KNOW NOTHING!!! and will never come close to duplicating Cramer's investing success.
Great Book for any Investor........2007-10-01
I am just starting to dabble in the stock market so I'm trying to learn as much as I can right now.
This book is very easy to understand and a very fast read. Being a really big fan of Cramer already this was a 'no-brainer', and although he is very educated he really translates his thoughts and advice in an easy to understand way.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in the stock market.
Mad Man? Not really, more a Market Genius.......2007-09-29
Not much value on my side reviewing this book for the hundreds time. What's the take away?
I've been investing in stocks for nearly 20 years, with at least so much success that I keep with it, more or less. The difference is now I get why stocks move or don't (at least much more than I did before). And this book (and his show) is key to that. Awesome guiding priciples, rules of thumb, and market insights.
It's a fun book to read, if you have a certain level of interest in the business world, which is kind if key, of course. Many good laughs! I love his style (which I'm sure many might find offensive or so). But heck, it works for me. I bought both his other books as well. It's so good. The return on this "investment" can't be calculated. Hope this helps! :-)
Fundamental investing in a layman's language.......2007-09-23
Booya Jim!! This is a great book about investing using a fundamental approach. What is great is that the basics of investing are explained in a layman's language. You have to read chapter 5 to get a basic 101 on business cycles and how to exploit the cycle in buying and selling stocks.
I can list all the chapters and what they tell you about or list all the rules Jim explains - but that is rote repetition. Read chapter 4 about basics of evaluation. Jim does a wonderful job about comparing apples to apples e.g., Walgreen to RiteAid and goes into depth why he thinks what should be bought. This lesson alone is worth the price of the book for an investor starting out. Another good lesson is to evaluate the current value of a stock.
Of course, you can attend some expensive classes and get uncompreshensible instructions in an university, but for the price of the book, the value of the lessons here cannot be beaten.
In addition to business cycles, Jim gives some great insights e.g., he states that it is stupid to consider investing and trading as a dichotomy. How true! His famous buy-and-homework approach is like hearing a great 101 lesson from a Professor who also knows the real world. I haven't made any money in buying and holding. My emotions eventually have gotten hold of me. Instead, you need to know when to buy and when to sell. There are separate chapters on predicting tops and bottoms of both the market and individual stocks - again, wonderful reads.
In addition there are 40 rules about investing. Some gems are "I don't care what you paid for the stock, would you buy it now?" question to paraphrase. He gives a lot of credit to the Goddess, now his wife!
All in all, a great book and a must-have book in your investing library. I read the book almost two times so that I could reinforce the lessons, especially about valuation and business cycles. My style of investing, which has been pretty successful, is both a combination of fundamental and technical factors, while Jim's is more fundamental. But the fundamental 101s in the book is useful and should be a must background for anyone wanting to put their hard-earned money on the fire in the stock market.
Super Read.......2007-08-26
Awesome Read! I've read a few investment books, but this one is the best! I've been out of the market for a bit, my old way to investing had not produced what I thought it could. Jim has turned me around and retaught what all the professors in college could not. Super fast read, and I could not thank Jim enought for sharing is expertise. I feel like a new and better invester....Homework, Homework, Homework...the Key to succuess.
