Book Description
"The single best introduction to a tremendous force in American painting."Chicago Tribune
Philip Guston (1913-1980) had been a successful abstract painter for almost two decades when he boldly returned to figurative work in the late 1960s. His uncompromising late paintings, which broke taboos, baffled his admirers, and shocked the art establishment, ultimately inspired succeeding generations of artists, invigorating painting with a new sense of mission.
This book, the most comprehensive survey of Guston's art to date, was originally published on the occasion of a major international exhibition. It brings together for the first time the different bodies of the artist's work, exposing the connective threads between each of his developmental stages. In-depth essays by a noted group of critics and art historians explore Guston's early influences and the emergence of symbols that resurfaced and played prominent roles in his late work. They provide insight into Guston's philosophy regarding abstraction, his role within its development, and the social and art historical context from which his so-called "Klan" paintings emerged. 197 illustrations, 158 in color.
Customer Reviews:
A most influential artist.......2007-04-01
There are very few books available on Philip Guston's work and this one gives a good overview of his entire career. Guston influenced most of the important artists at work today in some way or other, especially in his late works and the reasons for this influence become obvious when one skims through the pages of this retrospective and discovers what a great artist he was.
Many first-rate illustrations show the depth and scope of his art, with most of his seminal works (abstract as the canvas "Beggar's Joys" from the 1950's, figurative as the masterpiece "the Studio", from 1969) deciphered by a text which is informative as well as insightful.
Great addition for Guston lovers.......2005-03-04
This overall is a great book. It might not be the same quality that I have seen in a few other Thames & Hudson publishings, but it still is a great read and summary of Guston's work. Anyone that loves his work, this is for sure a book worth having.
Philip Guston: Retrospective.......2004-02-28
The definitive book on Philip Guston with many illustrations from each period of his work. Many excellent essays including one in his own words describing the evolution of each painting.
I bought the book after seeing the exhibition in San Francisco. Fully aware that the color illustratons were disappointing in quality (some paintings show pink ground color when that just isn't so) it is still a book I wouldn't be without. But be aware, color printing really isn't up to the quality found in many art books today.
terrific, but incomplete.......2003-08-06
The Guston restrospective, which I viewed at the SFMOMA in July 2003, was a rich, disturbing, illuminating exhibit. This catalogue of that show reprints a tremendous range (over 130 works) of Guston's work, all of it in fine, nuanced photography of the canvases. The early work includes realistic paintings with war themes, street scenes, and images of urban childhood in the manner of Ben Shahn. Eerily, Guston's hoods and bootsoles already appear. Next, the book's coverage of Guston's abstract phase reveals indebtedness to Mondrian's first abstractions; then Guston finds his own vocabulary in brisk, thick aggregates of rough rectangles on gently boiling backgrounds. Pink and red predominate, as in his later work. As part of both his oevre and Abstract Expresionism, these are among the most successful, aesthetic works of this great period in American art. For offering this total record of his development and contributions, the book provides something of great value.
His brief but famous "Klan" period follows, and then the long final phase--the pink "lima-bean" heads, the skinny, runny-meat legs, the stubble, the huge stunned eyes. The book, like the show, exposes a startling range in these paintings, confirming that Guston's seemingly narrow palette and imagery served his imagination and themes with great breadth and force. Especially powerful are two drawings and a large painting of Nixon. The last work in the catalogue is a Guston-style deli sandwich, a small (18 by 18 inches?) but hugely sensual and humorous work that surprised me at the exhibit. The book also reproduces a number of crude yet painterly black drawings done in few but expressive strokes.
The catalogue includes a useful chronology of Guston's life and work, many many photographs of him in various times and circumstances, and critical/historical exporation of his work via 4 or 5 articles penned by writers who cover varied topics relevant to his career and aims--all illustrated and all drawing on Guston's own statements and articles. His words include some provocative criticisms of the limitations of abstract art, a form which he of course abandoned in the mid 1960's. Abstract art fascinates me, yet Guston's statments gave/give me much to think about.
My sole major criticism of this otherwise terrific book is that it fails to reprint several of the works in the exhibit. Most of the missing work is owned by SFMOMA, which was one of the host museums, so this is a real mystery. Further, the missing works are among the best of the exhibition--and are thus as good as anything included in the book. The single most egregious omission is 1975's "Head and Bottle," a grim, transfixing portrayal of alcoholism. Also gone are a work Guston painted inspired by T. S. Eliot's "Four Quartets" and an epic and (arguably) hopeful triptych called "Red Sea, The Swell, and Blue Water." These great works all appeared in the exhibit, yet are nowhere in the catalogue. A few others are missing as well, but I'm not familiar enough with Guston's work to identify or even accurately describe them just from my visual memory of this enormous and stirring show, and that is precisely what is so frustrating about the book. Surely one essential purpose of an exhibition catalogue is to honor the total visual experience of its exhibit.
Of course, for each of these missing works, the book reprints several that are just as evocative and harrowing. Thus, as a monograph of Guston this is an excellent choice, one I will always find useful, beautifully produced, and engaging. I'm still very glad I bought it. But as a record of what the exhibit actually offered, as a way of re-experiencing the "Retrospective" of the book's title, the book falls a little short.

Product Description
Philip Guston's early, figurative work and his mature abstractions have become much sought after by museums and private collectors, although they remain less familiar to the museum-going public than works by his friends Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, and Franz Kline. At the same time, his late figurative worksincluding his so-called "Klan paintings"have had a powerful impact on artists who embraced figuration after decades in which abstraction dominated American painting. This book and the retrospective exhibition it accompanies bring together the different bodies of Guston's work, exposing the connective threads between each of the artist's developmental stages. The most comprehensive survey of Guston's art to date, the book begins with figurative works dating from the 1930s and 1940s, followed by a small and pivotal group of transitional works that show the artist's rapid and bold entry into abstraction. The core works of the book, a major group of Guston's lush pure abstractions from the 1950s and 1960s, were critically acclaimed when first exhibited but have rarely been seen since. The book then tracks the artist's evolution back into figuration and the various themes and symbols that comprise his controversial late works. Also included are selections of drawings that act as both prelude and restatement at each stage of the artist's career, and a number of works from guston's estate that have never before been exhibited and that shed new light on his development.

Being Single in a Couple's World: How to Be Happily Single While Looking for Love
ASIN: 076112134X |
Book Description
It's the edgy gift book for every unmarried woman who's fending off her nudgy mother and overly concerned (over-bearing?) friend, who can't go to a holiday dinner, class reunion, shower or wedding without hearing the usual round of questions. Something like So, why aren't you married yet? Or sometimes, Still not found that special someone? Or any variation thereof.
Delightful, irreverent, and witty, Even God is Single, So Stop Giving Me a Hard Time is an affirmation for every girl who's single and loving it. Even God is Single is strong, sexy, smart, and edgy. And joyous-it celebrates singlehood, just as it pays homage to the self-assured and savvy woman who knows that you're not half a person just because you're not half a couple.
Even God is Single asks is it "monogamy" or "monotony?" Shows that given the 50% divorce rate, you haven't missed out on marriage, you just skipped a few divorces. And fearlessly examines the role models. Married? Frankenstein, Linda Tripp, and 20,000 Moonies. Single? Catwoman, Superwoman--and, of course, God.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-05-09
This is not so much a book as a hard bound pamphlet. No substance to speak of and zero depth. Disappointing in that yet another book takes a flippant approach to singleness and Christianity.
Great Pick Me Up.......2005-11-04
Even God is Single is a wonderfully irreverent look at all the reasons why being single is not the end of the world and may even be a plus. Not only is it well written but the illustrations are fabulous. Never let anyone dare question your single status again. Buy the book if you or a friend needs a good laugh.
Let Me Be ..........2003-01-26
Let me be single. I do not want to get married. Thank you for this fun and interesting book.
Short and Sweet.......2003-01-17
This one is shorter than most of Karen Salmansohn's books, but it certainly is sweet. Marriage is not the be-all and end-all of life in the 21st Century !! Of course, if you do want to change your status, check out her new book for 2003 -- "How To Change Your Entire Life By Doing Absolutely Nothing" -- which I also enjoyed very much. Perceptive humor can be good for you.
A silly,unamusing book.......2002-04-24
I dont understand why any man would want to do the illustrations for Karen Salmansohns books.I personally am so repulsed by this woman I would want nothing to do with any of her projects. This book isnt any better than her other books, theyre all worthy of only one star reviews.

Secretary
ASIN: 1887128190 |
Book Description
This companion to the movie Secretary, starring James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal which won Special Jury Prize for Originality, 2002 Sundance Film Festival, is a powerful love story that exalts the extreme, the ecstatic, and the weird. When a self-mutilating secretary goes to work for an over-exacting lawyer, the ingredients are ripe for a workplace S/M romance. With offbeat humor and edgy eroticism, Lee and Mr. Grey tread the thorny balance between control and surrender. Accompanying the screenplay are color photos, illustrations, the filmmakers' storyboards, notes, and essays.
Customer Reviews:
Good screenplay, GREAT movie!!!.......2004-12-31
This screenplay was fun to read, and it is a good companion book for anyone who--like me--adores the film! It was fun to read all of the scenes that were cut from the movie, as well as to discover how some of the scenes were moved around or shortened. The interview with Steven Shainberg was also interesting to read...and finding out why Erin Cressida Wilson decided to write the script is enlightening (on many levels)! The only thing that annoys me is that there are only four color photos, but several black and white ones somewhat make up for this. Overall, an amusing screenplay for fans of the film!
a most unusual secretary.......2003-11-04
The screenplay of this very funny story of an unusual boss/secretary romance is fun to read if you enjoyed the film, you get to read all the scenes that were cut. Most of the scenes involve Lee's family and friends, who feature more prominently in the screenplay than they do in the film. Particularly amusing is a scene where Lee watches her friends waxing their legs, and realises she has found another wonderful way of inlficting pain on herself. Later she rushes off to the chemist to buy loads of wax, another funny scene cut from the movie. The introduction, in which Erin Cressida Wilson explains how she came to write the screenplay, is fascinating. I found myself gritting my teeth with annoyance though, when I read the interview with director Steven Shainberg at the end of the book. Talking about Lee's life after the film has ended he says "I don't think she's going to end up a housewife.....this isn't someone who just stays at home". Oh no, perish the thought. It's quite alright to have Lee being spanked, made to climb into a garbage dump, wearing a saddle, crawling on the floor with letters in her mouth, urinating in her wedding dress - but God forbid she should be degraded to the level of being - shock horror - a HOUSEWIFE. I found myself thinking how nice it would be to be able to push Mr. Shainberg into a very large and smell garbage dump. Has the thought ever crossed his mind that she might find staying at home preferable to being stuck in some dreary office all day? No, I don't suppose so. Oh well, the screenplay is fun to read anyway.

Beware: This is NOT a "Ray Charles" Collection!.......2006-01-05
This book is, mostly, a collection of the original sheet music of songs Ray Charles performed and recorded. In other words, they are the original versions, NOT the versions that Ray recorded. For example, "Georgia On My Mind" is the original Hoagie Carmichael version from 1930, NOT the ultra-smooth version Brother Ray so cooly laid down. Some of the sheets are useable, like "Crying Time," and "Born to Lose," but almost all are NOT the Ray Charles version. You have been warned!

I got my dad hooked on this first, then I started SuDoku. I bought both of us this book & I just finished it & I NEED more. I have been looking on line to order something like this book but have not found what I am looking for just yet. This is by far, the best book out there. Bring on Volume 4!!!
Pleasingly challenging puzzles.......2006-12-10
This is the best book of harder sudoku that I've seen. The puzzles appear to be hand-created, unlike the randomly created junk found in some other books. In many difficult puzzles, the solver is reduced to penciling in possibles fairly early on, then searching through lots of tiny numbers for clues. In this book that's rarely necessary (and least in Levels 1-4, which is as far as I've gotten.) The book has a nice small format, and the paper is very white and of excellent quality. All in all, highly satisfactory!
Finally...a really challenging Su Doku puzzle book!.......2006-07-11
Level 1 of this book is like level 5 on the Vol 1 book of the same title. I can only solve about half of the level 5s in this book. These puzzles are excellent for those who have mastered the medium and hard level puzzles in most newspapers. But be warned, these are hard compared to vol. 1. I can't wait for the next advanced one. I may even buy a second copy of Vol. 3 since I don't remember the answers anyway!

Customer Reviews:
Great Information! The best investment book I have read to date. .......2007-09-28
This book is simple, straight forward, and realistic. The author does a great job. The book is full of excellent strategies and advice.
Very Good Resource .......2007-09-24
This book provides excellent insight for buying pre-foreclosures. It is well-written, easy to understand, and insightful. The only problem is that it does not give relevant economic information to investors to navigate the real estate bubble. However, I do not fault the author for that since they are really two seperate topics. To fill this gap I would also recommend Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble. This book focuses on the economic aspect of teh bubble and presents a survey of the best methods to make money from the real estate mess.
If you want to buy pre-foreclosures, I would recommend both books - this one for instructions on how to handle foreclosures and the other (Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble) as an economic resource. Together, I feel they have given me a huge edge.
Ok content, misleading promise.............2007-09-16
The content of the book is solid and practical. However, don't believe the author's statement in the book that he will answer questions sent to him directly via email. I sent repeated emails to Mr. Lucier requesting clarification of a couple scenarios from the book and have had no responses.
Excellant with lots of meat........2007-08-26
This book will not do the job for you rather it will make you think. Granted the author is a little odd but, the information is true to fact. You start to think when you read this book and then the inspiration comes. This book is only a stepping block to great things. I apply this and a lot of other information and I make a great living. I hope people do not like this book so, I can eliminate the competition. LOL
This book is a winner!.......2007-07-16
I am a retired real estate broker in Nevada and an associate broker in Utah. This book is full of details on exactly how to go about purchasing pre-forclosure properties. Author includes websites to research for additional information, form to be used in your quest to find pre-foreclosure properties and his personal email address if you get really stuck. I would recommend this book to anyone who is really interested in improving their income.
