    Book Description

Picturing French Style features works of art and fashion that highlight the special relationship between these two cultural forces in France. It explores the reciprocal influences of art and fashion, and demonstrates the collaborative spirit that continues to thrive today among designers and artists.

Portraits beginning with the reign of Louis XIV reveal the details of 18th century fashion, while essays discuss the careers of Marie-Jeanne "Rose" Bertin, Marie-Antoinette's minister of fashion, and Charles Frederick Worth, often termed the father of haute couture. Works by Rodin, Degas, Bonnard, Cézanne, Renoir, and Picasso, and gowns by Chanel, Ungaro, Givenchy, and Dior bring fashion through the 19th and 20th centuries, ending with the contemporary World Cup installation by Matthieu Manche and Dress on Wheels by Marie-Ange Guilleminot.

3 out of 5 stars Not all "Northwest Coast".......2006-12-27

Great, yet another book about "Northwest Coast" and "Coast Salish" art that ignores the art of the Salish Indians of Western Washington. Ever since J. E. Standley flooded the Seattle tourist market with the fake Kwakiutle artwork, fake totem poles, and other hybrids of art forms from the northern coast Salish tribes, the art forms that are indigenous to our tribes here in western Washington have been all but forgotten, brushed aside by authors who chase the market with books that pretend to deal with all "of the Northwest Coast" but in reality ignore anything south of the 49th Parallel.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Informational.......2006-10-10

Interesting and well written, this book has been not only a wonderful source of entertainment but a good reference for this native art style. Every image is a beautiful example of the style, and covers several medias (print, paint, clothing and carving). Stewart spends time covering all the basics, from the rudimentary design principles, to the myths and symbolism of the many animals and figures represented by the examples. Differences between tribal styles are also covered, each group accompanied by several wonderful examples of the art. This book is a great starting place for anyone wanting to study this art form, whether it be primarily cultural or artistic.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Haida.......2006-03-16

This is a great book if you are looking for explanations of the history of the Haida artwork and drawings. It also includes many examples of the artwork and is easy to read and understand for all ages.

      5 out of 5 stars What I needed.......2004-12-25

Great pictures, explainations, and examples, Put in wonderful catagories and easy to understand!! Fully recommend!! I wish there was more of it as it is so well thought out!!

5 out of 5 stars Great details and good reading..........2001-08-02

Through well-detailed photographs and drawings, this book provides a nice introduction to Northwest tribal art. It uses examples of two- and three-dimensional works of art to explain the meanings and symbolism behind the animal motifs. You will quickly learn to recognize the ovoid, and S and U shapes that are characteristic to the art form. It also explains stylistic differences between the different cultural groups. I used this book on a trip through the Northwest and it really enriched my experience.

2 out of 5 stars Totem Pole Survey.......2005-09-21

This book is mainly an anthology of totem poles found in the world. As such, it is rather dry and starved for content. It describes various poles with accompanying photos but does not venture much into technology, artform, etc. I can't really recommend the book unless you are a traveller wishing to visit and view various totem poles found in the Pacific Northwest.

5 out of 5 stars A tour of the Northwest.......2001-09-05

This is absolutely essential for anyone going to British Columbia or Alaska. It gives a brief description and explanation of almost all the important outdoor totem poles you'll come across, taking you through the poles figure by figure. I found it invaluable when in Victoria's Thunderbird Park and Vancouver's Stanley Park and Museum of Anthropology. A real gem you'll read over and glance through again once you're back home.

5 out of 5 stars excellent reference on the northwest art form.......1999-06-09

No frills, no gimmicks, just an excellent written and graphic profile of totem poles as a symbol of a North American people. Allows you to enter a community where beliefs in the earth, sky, oceans, mountains and animals continue to be spiritual.

5 out of 5 stars Behind every great man..........1999-12-13

This is a derivative work which is most enjoyable if one has a tiny bit of knowledge about De Soto. For budding De Soto enthusiasts, Looking For De Soto is a must read.

Joyce Rockwood Hudson has written a lively and entertaining account of a six-week vacation she and her husband took in November-December 1984 where they followed the sixteenth century explorer De Soto's trail through the southeastern United States.

You have to love people who shun the cruise ships and Disneyworld and Madison Avenue in order to tromp around in the mud of backwater swamps while on vacation.

One might reasonably ask, who is this lady, and why should we care? She is the wife of noted anthropology professor Charles Hudson, and we should care because Professor Hudson has set forth an alternative route for the De Soto expedition, differing in important ways from the route as determined by the Swanton Commission (published by Smithsonian Press, 1939).

The issue has not been settled - that of De Soto's precise route - but Professor Hudson's theories are interesting and taken seriously by academia as well as people such as myself who enjoy visiting historic places.

If you are lost, don't feel alone. So are the Hudsons. That's the point. No one really knows where De Soto went, exactly, but the author ignites interest. She also describes in an engaging way a portion of the field work conducted while on "vacation", adding weight to Professor Hudson's theories.

And remember, folks, this is only one theory of many. That's most of the fun. Those of us who consider ourselves southerners can relate. It is sort of like arguing whether Alabama's football team is number one, or Georgia's or Florida's...

Only this stuff happened four hundred and fifty years ago, and the debate rages.

These Conquistador fellows didn't ask for directions, they just snatched the first native American that came along and clapped him in chains if he didn't speak right up.

Mrs. Hudson keeps you moving right along, with interesting detours about pecans, zinc mining, salt making, etc. She writes clearly, has a keen eye for the absurd, and knows how to deliver a punch line. I'm still laughing over the French colonial town of Smackover. I would also imagine that if you poke too many holes in her husband's theories, she might chew off your ear. A stand up lady.

One or two fly specks in the book. A map comparing Hudson and Swanton routes would have helped enormously. You'll find yourself sorting through the Atlas and a dusty copy of the Swanton report. The author also fails to mention the name of a good rib place in Memphis. Unconscionable. The Afterword updates the reader on happenings through 1992, when the book was published.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I wish De Soto would have had someone like Joyce Rockwood Hudson along. Even epic tales of death, disease, despair, and war require the female touch.

                Jerry. George. Elaine. Kramer.

We've followed their misadventures for nearly ten years on Thursday nights. Here, finally, are the scripts of the first two seasons that will take you back to the beginning of Seinfeld.

Featuring the first 17 episodes ever aired, The Seinfeld Scripts contains all the great lines that have kept us laughing for years: the pilot episode, "The Seinfeld Chronicles," where it all began; George introduces his importer/exporter altar ego Art Vanderlay in "The Stakeout"; Kramer becomes obsessed with cantaloupe in "The Ex-Girlfriend"; Jerry and George meet Elaine's dad in "The Jacket"; is Jerry responsible for a poor Polish woman's death when he makes "The Pony Remark"?; Jerry and Elaine decide to become intimate again in "The Deal"; what will George do when he is banned from the executive bathroom in "The Revenge"?; and Jerry, George, and Elaine wait for a table in "The Chinese Restaurant."

It's all here: the award-winning writing of Seinfeld, "the defining sitcom of our age". Created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.

Elaine: My roommate has Lyme disease.
Jerry: Lyme disease? I thought she had Epstein-Barr syndrome?
Elaine: She has this in addition to Epstein-Barr. It's like Epstein-Barr with a twist of Lyme disease.

George: She calls me up at my office she says, "We have to talk."
Jerry: The four worst words in the English language.

Kramer: What a body. Yeeaaah...that's for me.
Jerry: Yeah and you're just what she's looking for, too--a stranger, leering through a pair of binoculars ten floors up.

                5 out of 5 stars SEINFELD'S COMEDIC INSPIRATION.......2006-01-24

Yes, Seinfeld is always funny. Here's what he said about his comedic inspiration: "[Lois Nettleton] was married to Jean Shepherd. He's the guy who invented talk radio and really formed my entire comedic sensibility. Yes. I learned how to do comedy from Jean Shepherd." He said this in his commentary for "The Gymnast" episode on the sitcom's DVD set, sixth season. Who is Jean Shepherd? See the book EXCELSIOR, YOU FATHEAD! THE ART AND ENIGMA OF JEAN SHEPHERD.

                5 out of 5 stars Heh... Did I say..........2004-03-12

What the hell am I saying? THIS IS A GOOD BOOK. This will be great along when season one of seinfeld comes out. This show is no drama, is no soap opera, has no continuous story. I mean seinfeld, you don't have to watch other episodes to get the others. This is the best if not the best or only script out there. Mothers "Eat your vegetables and don't forget the lima beans!" Isn't laughter the best medicine? Seinfeld twice a day keeps the drugs and medicine away. ( not serious, if you experience any symtonms for anything, consult your doctor, and don't run to your t.v. )

1 out of 5 stars the annoying stuff.......2004-02-12

this isn't not worth buying or even staring at. i mean if you read it you might be thinking right now...why do people even bother read these reviews this is a horrible book imma watch tv! i defenetly recomend throwing this book away i don't even know why they made it a book. this is the worstest thin i have ever read. i have seen the show and it's ok...only when it ends i can't beleive people actually like this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars whats the deal with airline peanuts??????.......2004-01-31

Seinfeld is one of the funniest sitcoms ever. (Next to married with children)This show shows that life is really about nothing. You wake up in the morning and you go to work, you wake up and go to work. But it does prove,....$H!* happens. This shows funny, but it doesn't get funnier till the later episodes. But this stuff is still funny. You need to buy this. You laugh your @$$ off. It's not that much either, Jerry seinfeld, he so crazeh. They should come out with the other seasons and the DVD. They better come out soon (cause if they don't) ill be.....be very angry.

5 out of 5 stars A really thick big book of award winning material!.......2003-06-15

First of all, this is a great conversational piece worth leaving on the coffee table. It can break the ice with strangers coming around your place.

I bought it on Amazon, thinking it would be a small book with compact fonts. Infact it is a huge book with pictures of the show for each script and well indexed.

Any aspiring film makers and writers really should read this book, you get a better idea of what is funny when it comes to writing. After all, this show was a huge hit!!

You get the first two season's scripts (17 episodes).

The one thing that does hold it back, is the absence of any foreword or note from Jerry Seinfeld or Larry David. It is just a book of scripts!! But that's cool if you are the Seinfeld fan who just can't get enough!!

                    Book Description

Gaga for Ghostbusters? Get the guide. Step right up and get your fill of 80s nostalgia with the movie bible to end all movie bibles. We've diligently compiled a list of 140 of the most influential movies of the 1980s that's sure to please popcorn gobblers and highbrow chin-strokers alike. The 80s was a time for adventurers, an era of excess, pomp, and bravado. In the era when mullets and shoulder pads were all the rage, moviegoers got their kicks from flicks as wide-ranging as Blade Runner, When Harry Met Sally, and Blue Velvet. Without a doubt, sci-fi was the most important genre of the decade, with non-human characters like E.T. winning the hearts of millions while the slimy creatures from Aliens became the stuff of nightmares and movies like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future fused comedy and sci-fi to the delight of audiences everywhere. In fact, the 1980s saw the invention of a new reality, a movieworld so convincingly real - no matter now far-fetched - that spectators could not help but abandon hemselves to it. Now that's entertainment, folks.

Good book, pretty cheap considering it's hardcover. Lots of large colour photos, it covers most of the major hollywood movies of the 80's ( and there sure were some great ones ) as well as some foreign movies.
The introduction is a bit airy fairy, but the rest is good, makes me want to get out the movies he talks about that I haven't seen yet.

                      Book Description

Perris examines the past and present uses of music as a means for political and social change, overt or disguised. He presents evidence of music as propaganda ranging from Broadway to the official compositions of the totalitarian regimes of Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Communist China, as well as from concert halls to the protest movements of the 1960s. Familiar classics are analyzed, as well as operas of nineteenth-century nationalist composers. Shostakovich, Henze, and Penderecki, as well as Bob Dylan and many rock and roll bands are shown as composers who were adversaries of the state, while others, consciously or not, reinforced the status quo of their particular era. The sensuous encroachment of music in Western religious services is compared and contrasted with the status and use of music in Eastern religions.

The information in the book is fantastic and loads of it too. The book was not in new condition as listed in the advertisement. I was disappointed with this because it was a gift. Other than that, my son loves the book and he doesn't really care that it is a little worn.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful book with pictures and card rankings.......2004-09-30

This big book of Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game is a nice gift for Yu-Gi-Oh! fans of all ages. It shows pictures of the cards, ranks the cards, and gives tips. It lists the cards based on the set in which each card is available, so most cards are listed multiple times. Also there are different reviewers so the ranking for a particular card is not always consistent. A great feature in this book is the section on staple cards (cards that fit well in all decks). My son has another book that also lists the staple cards, but this book does it better. It lists many cards, tells why they are staples, and also lists some "almost" staples.

I can't give this book 5 stars because there are some small errors in the book (i.e. words omitted, pictures not in the right place, etc.) Also you cannot quickly find information about specific cards. Some "nice to have" features for future releases of this book would be an index that listed the cards and their corresponding pages and a table that listed specific objectives and ranked the available cards for accomplishing those objectives. These features would be especially useful since the card ranking (1 - 5 stars) provided in the book is based somewhat on the availability of other cards that do a particular job better. For example, Omnious Fortuntelling receives a low ranking because Forceful Sentry and Confiscation do a better job at providing the noted benefit.

This book provides great insight. However, if you are new to the game and are looking for information about how to play the game you will need to find a supplement for this book. I purchased this book for my 5 year old son who plays the game based on the official rules that were provided in his starter deck. We were hoping for a book that answered some of our outstanding questions about game play. While this book is great and we are very happy with it, we still need to purchase another book to complement this nice book.

Pojo does it again with another steller publication. From their past publications and magazines, it's clear that if it's popular, Pojo will be writing about it.

The contributors to this book, aside from Pojo himself, are the people you're used to seeing on the Pojo Yu-Gi-Oh website weekly. They know the YuGi Collectable Card Game inside and out.

Ever watch the Yu-Gi-Oh cartoons/anime? This book explains every episode up until the recently release ones in great detail.

Clearly if you or your loved ones are into the Yu-Gi-Oh craze, this is something you NEED to have on your book shelf.
