    Book Description

In 1970 Robert Smithson (1938-1973), one of the most innovative and provocative artists of the twentieth century, created the landmark earthwork Spiral Jetty at Rozel Point on Utah's Great Salt Lake. This dramatic and highly influential work forms a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide and stretches out counterclockwise into the lake's translucent red water. Composed of black basalt rocks and earth, the sculpture comprises the materials of its location: mud, salt crystals, rocks, water.
The contributors to this comprehensive publication consider the sculpture in relation to its eponymous companions--a text work and a film. These essays situate this renowned series of works alongside Smithson's critical writings, proposals, drawings, sources, and models. Amply illustrated with archival and new photographs of the Jetty and many comparative illustrations, this book makes evident why Smithson's art and writings have had such a powerful impact on art and art theory for over thirty years.

An 8X9 paperback with selected BL&WH photos to accompany personal tributes to Sir Laurence. Among the most well-known, especially to American audiences are, of course, Joan Plowright; Maggie Smith, Jeremy Brett, Michael Caine, Alan Bates. Shows Sir Laurence at work as director, actor and some casual shots. Also pictured are Derek Jacobi, Michael Blakemore, Peter Hall. Loved especially the number of photos with Joan Plowright as a younger stage actress. This book is done with professionalism and dignity. A good supplement to Olivier's autobiographies.

Outstanding wall calendar. Much funnier than the Simpsons 2005 that my wife and I had last year. I think Dilbert lends itself better to print.

The days of the month are black on a medium blue background so they're difficult to read. A standard size and format would work better. Cartoons are great.

1 out of 5 stars So painfully bad..........2004-12-06

I only managed to finish this book by convincing myself that it must have at least one nugget of wisdom to impart. One technique that is actually practical. One tip that is not flat out ridiculous.

Unfortunately I was wrong. What Mr. Rotcop offers up here is a blend of the absurdly obvious ("Don't bring a 96-ounced drink to the executive's desk. It will leave a wet ring." Page 44. & "Never be late for an appointment" Page 45.) with the just plain absurd (Use action figures to act out your pitch. Or dress up as a superhero to give your pitch. Page 27.)

                          This book is absolutely useless.

                          1 out of 5 stars Perfectly Uninformative.......2004-07-04

I'm not particularly religious. But this book inspired me to research all Gods, long buried or still alive, so I might beseech them to give me the two hours back that I decimated reading this book.

It might give you the inkling of the environment of the pitch, but otherwise the book doesn't help you develop, write, work on a physical or verbal pitch on any level worth taking to a meeting. I've seen professional writers (eg. working writers) talk about pitching, and what's offered here is, at best, passing opinions. That, linked with the constant dropping of the Rotcop?s accomplishments like ?pitchmart?, buries this book?s credibility, and seals it with an iron lid.

Spend your money on one of the other books on pitching. Though I haven't read them, they have to be better. Or buy a book about storytelling. Or spend the money buying your friends coffee and pitch them to get practice. Or dig a hole and throw your money in that.

2 out of 5 stars Marginal at Best.......2004-04-26

This book doesn't deliver what you're looking for. First of all, Mr. Rotcop says he was head of four studios. When I hear "studio" I'm thinking UNIVERSAL, PARAMOUNT, MGM...not small production companies that own studio eqpt and lot space...that turn out B pictures straight to video or third rate cable TV.
Secondly, the book doesn't seem to be much more than an advertisement for his workshop. I hope that his workshop is good--however, the book leaves quite a bit to be desired. It is odd to me that he has trouble giving "evidence" of success stories based on his own Pitchmart other than a few stories of B/straight to video pieces. In a word I was UNDERWHELMED.

In the late 80s, Factory Records was at the height of its success thanks to two bands - Joy Division and New Order - and the single-minded company director, Anthony H. Wilson. This is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of this influential independent UK record company. Drawing on exclusive interviews, Mike Middles uncovers the real story behind the company that fell so dramatically from unprecedented global success to an all-time low by 1992, when the back catalogue had been sold off and its key bands were in disarray. The classic warts-and-all history of Factory Records, told by one of Manchester's leading music writers.

At the start, I felt Mick was a bit of a sycophant. And he may well be. As things progress, I was able to put that aside and was quite fascinated with this slice of British music history. And really, being sycphantic is not a bad thing in context. Anyone who was around when the music came out, or anyone who loves electro pop, dance and DJ culture should enjoy this. Me, I always love the Brits and their writing. I enjoy the quiet humour. Does that sound sycophantic???

Among the library of investment books promising no-fail strategies for riches, Benjamin Graham's classic, The Intelligent Investor, offers no guarantees or gimmicks but overflows with the wisdom at the core of all good portfolio management.

The hallmark of Graham's philosophy is not profit maximization but loss minimization. In this respect, The Intelligent Investor is a book for true investors, not speculators or day traders. He provides, "in a form suitable for the laymen, guidance in adoption and execution of an investment policy" (1). This policy is inherently for the longer term and requires a commitment of effort. Where the speculator follows market trends, the investor uses discipline, research, and his analytical ability to make unpopular but sound investments in bargains relative to current asset value. Graham coaches the investor to develop a rational plan for buying stocks and bonds, and he argues that this plan must be a bulwark against emotional behavior that will always be tempting during abrupt bull and bear markets.

Since it was first published in 1949, Graham's investment guide has sold over a million copies and has been praised by such luminaries as Warren E. Buffet as "the best book on investing ever written." These accolades are well deserved. In its new form--with commentary on each chapter and extensive footnotes prepared by senior Money editor, Jason Zweig--the classic is now updated in light of changes in investment vehicles and market activities since 1972. What remains is a better book. Graham's sage advice, analytical guides, and cautionary tales are still valid for the contemporary investor, and Zweig's commentaries demonstrate the relevance of Graham's principles in light of 1990s and early twenty-first century market trends. --Patrick O'Kelley

                          Book Description

The best book on investing ever written, this classic work offers sound and safe principles for investing – principles that have worked for more than the half century since the first edition was published. This revised edition features a new introduction, appendix and chapter updates.

Since its original publication in 1949, Benjamin Graham's book has remained the most respected guide to investing, due to his timeless philosophy of 'value investing', which helps protect investors against areas of possible substantial error and teaches them to develop long–term strategies with which they will be comfortable down the road.

                          5 out of 5 stars Intelligent investor........2007-09-19

Anyone who chooses to comprehend this classic text will without a doubt expand their knowledge within the universe of value investment techniques. Moreover, in these times of muddled distinction between the investor and speculator, there is no better reason to buy this precious piece of Graham's intellectual genius than now. For myself, this book was truly the first necessary step to bring the perpetual pernicious chaos of what is conveniently termed speculating, to a more lucid order as I learned the true value of Graham's principles of value investing. We can all benefit to learn from this book.

                          5 out of 5 stars Timeless .......2007-09-11

This is the best book I've read on investing and will remain the standard for value investing.

5 out of 5 stars Invest in this book, invest in yourself........2007-09-08

With more than one million copies sold and an endorsement on the cover by Warren Buffet, you know there has to be something to this book- and I think I know why. Simply because it is the first book ever to describe the emotional framework and analytical tools necessary for financial success for individual investors.

Probably the single best book on investing written for the lay-public and the stock market bible since its first appearance in 1949, it's a great resource, although it's quite a thick book and filled with detail- and probably not for anybody but the serious stock market investor. And if getting motivated to start investing is your problem, suggest The Sixty-Second Motivator. Good luck!

                          5 out of 5 stars Ben Gragam's philosophy.......2007-08-18

I found that both Ben Graham's philosophy and Warren Buffett's philosophy are very similar to Taoism. If you are interested in this subject, you can read Warren Buffett and Tao Te Ching: A Modern Investor and an Age-Old Philosophy.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the orignal, not the Zweig version.......2007-07-11

As the title of this review indicates, do yourself a favour and buy the original Ben Graham version not this one with Zweig.

Let me start by saying that Warren Buffett had nothing to do with this book, the preface and appendix are extracts from the Financial Analysts Journal and transcripts of a 1984 talk at Columbia University.

The orignal Ben Graham material is mostly intact in each chapter. It is not full of calculations, so it is not difficult to read, but it is a slow and deliberate building of an argument on investing. As such people who are interested in the book for its investment advice will find it logical and sensible. Zwieg however has decided that his own footnotes are far more valuable than Graham's so he has moved Graham's footnotes to the appendix and put his notes under the original text - which is why I say that the chapters are "mostly intact", but not completely.

After each of Graham's chapters, Zweig has included a commentary chapter of his own. These chapters and his footnotes will give you the feeling that "a high school science student was commenting on the PhD work of a professor". The commentary is a weak summary, mostly devoid of any insight and sometimes making statements about what Graham "would have said", which is nothing short of egregious.

Overall, I give Graham's original chapters five stars and Zweig's additions one star, resulting in an average of 3 stars.

This book is a clear example of someone jumping on the bandwagon and trying to associate himself with prominent people like Graham and Buffett. So do yourself a favour and buy the original Graham version, that way you won't feel like Zweig suckered you into buying his book, using Graham's name.
