Book Description
Henri Dorra, in his comprehensive new book, presents the development and the aesthetic theories of the symbolist movement in art and literature. Included are writings (many never before translated or reprinted) by artists, designers, architects, and critics, along with Dorra's learned commentary. Fifty photographs of symbolist works complement his encyclopedic coverage.
Dorra traces symbolism and its roots from artist to artist and critic to critic from the 1860s to the early twentieth century. The decorative arts and architecture are examined as well as painting and sculpture. The Arts and Crafts movement, art nouveau, the work of Eiffel in France and Sullivan in the United States are all well represented.
The close relations between symbolist poets and artists are reflected in the chapter on literary developments. Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, and Mallarmé are here, but so, too, are writers less well-known. A section on the Post-Impressionists and the "Artists of the Soul" rounds out Dorra's rich and varied text, and his epilogue lays the groundwork for what was to follow symbolism.
Dorra beautifully integrates the different aesthetic branches of symbolism, the different media and national variations, without ever losing sight of the whole. The historical context provided makes this a particularly appealing collection for students and scholars of art history and literature, as well as for anyone interested in the evolution of symbolism.

Good Primary Sources.......2007-04-05
This anthology is a solid collection of primary sources from the critics, poets, and artists of the Symbolist era. I used this volume in a master's level art history course so my professor obviously thought it was valuable as well.

Book Description
From the bodice-busting covers of Harlequin romances to personal ads to wedding cake toppers, romantic subjects have thrived in the fertile soil of American modern-age media and pop culture. Brought to Abrams by the creators of the successful Happy Kitty Bunny Pony: A Saccharine Mouthful of Super Cute, Love Sick celebrates the many facets of love: dating, marriage, heartbreak, sex, and strange, thin men in shorts with funny socks!
Containing more than 200 images from the print and advertising archives of Charles S. Anderson Design Company in combination with a sharply hilarious text by Michael J. Nelson, the main writer and host of the legendary Mystery Science Theater 3000, Love Sick is a steamy, kitsch, and campy testament to America's love of LOVE. So grab a cozy spot by the fire, snuggle up with the one you love, and see if either of you recognizes yourself in Love Sick.
Customer Reviews:
Confusing, a little humorous, mostly a waste.......2007-08-08
Mike Nelson is a comic genius, clearly, but this book is sort of unsalvageable. If this was a book of actual images and objects that have been created and used about "love, lust and marriage" and then Mike were to write comments on each of them, that would be a good book, it would be interesting, and significant and maybe even insightful. But as far as I can tell, that's not even what the book is, it seems that it's a bunch of random images created by a company (popart?), not over the course of the last century, as the book seems to imply, but over the last few decades, and the objects were created, apparently, as parodies of real pieces of media, and now the book makes fun of these parodies, which were never even intended to be serious, originally. It's complicated, but mostly it's not very good. The paper is good, the binding is good, the quality is fine, and the (very short) mike nelson comments are good, but this book could be made into an amusing flashplayer webpage, and really probably should be. If you need the complete Mike Nelson collection, though, you should buy it.
Another Pop ink triumph.......2006-10-12
I was worried I wouldn't like this one as much as "Happy Kitty Bunny Pony", but I think I might even like it more. The artwork is gorgeous (and bizarre at times) and funny in its own right, but Mike's comments send it over the edge into pure hilarity. While it may not have the let's-all-pass-it-around-and-laugh potential of HKBP, it's well worth the purchase price. Of the 3 Pop ink-Mike Nelson books I've read, I think this one has the best writing and the art is as good as HKBP.
Love Sick: A Smoldering Look at Love, Lust, and Marriage.......2005-10-24
Every page of this book is filled with extra sharp graphics, some never see before. A wonderful collection of designs, very bright, clean and well done. Love Sick has combined enjoyable humor with fine graphics (a few sleazy pics too) but all is in good fun for a cute look at a the smoldering look of Love, Lust and Marriage.
Love Sick was equally enjoyable as part of the trilogy of "Pop-Ink" graphic books: "Happy Kitty Bunny Pony" and "Goth-Icky" all in my estimation were well done. Enjoyable good fun! All books featured the best and sharpest graphic collection - the best I've ever seen.

Book Description
Metallica has become the world’s biggest heavymetal band. Alongside such iconic artists as Iron Maiden, AC/DC, and Ozzy, Metallica has come to define the modern view of metal music. Now in their third decade, the band remains as big, brutal, energetic, and unashamedly loud. Reaching their commercial peak in 1991, the band’s fifth record, the self-titled Metallica (dubbed the Black Album by fans) has sold in excess of 12 million records in the United States alone and continually sells year in, year out, regardless of musical trends. Nothing Else Matters charts the recorded highlights of Metallica, both as a powerful live unit and as an influence on an entire generation of young metal bands and artists. The text includes insights on the development of James Hetfield as a songwriter, the nonmusical roles that each member plays, and the contribution of original bassist Cliff Burton who played “big brother” to the younger members. It also includes 90 photographs and anecdotes from the studio sessions; insights into the lyrics; cover art and developing musical direction, particularly from the hugely controversial Load/Reload eras.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of Your Time and Money.......2004-02-23
Metallica, one of the greatest rock bands of our time, both lyrically and musically. I have always been a diehard Metallica fan, I own all of their albums and love to read about their history and lyrics which is what convinced me to buy this book. However, this was a very uninteresting read to be quite honest. The way the lyrics are described are at many times based on personal opinion and their meanings are no more in depth than you would get on a Metallica site with song meanings such as Encycmet. I'll admit, I learned a handful of cool Metallica facts from this book, but it certaintly does not make up for it's many poor aspects. If you want a good Metallica book, I suggest Metallica Unbound. Nothing Else Matters : The Stories Behind the Biggest Songs, is Poorly written and plain boring. This book just doesn't cut it and it will feel like a chore reading this.
Too much hero worship........2003-10-29
In the history of rock music, including all genres, it is difficult to overstate the influence of Metallica. They are constantly growing and developing their art, and trials and tribulations aside, continue to produce excellant music. It is fascinating to read a retrospective of the creative process of the band, song by song, with an emphasis on the lyrics. HOWEVER, the author lays the hero worship too thick at times, and takes away the credibility of the book. It isn't necessary, as they are a great band and a compelling story. It is still good enough to read, and the pictures are great, but spare me the over the top, walk on water attitude.

Customer Reviews:
delusive title.......2007-04-20
This book has a delusive title. A more honest title would be "Puerto Rican
Block Dominoes for Pairs." If you play Draw Dominoes there's absolutely
nothing here for you. Even if you play Block, but not in Puerto Rican style
or in pairs, there's nothing for you here either. If you do play Puerto Rican, go ahead and buy it. But make sure you also buy a crystal ball or a
pendulum because the author gives rules that assume you know your opponent's
hand. You must also be fluent in Spanish to make use of the bibliography the
author recommends. Go ahead! Have fun!
Competitive Dominoes: How To Play Like A Champion.......2005-09-10
Very informative and helpfull in the strategy of the latin dominoes.
Partner's Dominoes - How to get it all!.......2004-04-12
I liked this version of dominoes by Mr. Lugo. It is about most of a one game variation which is a Block game for partners, but there is a lot explored too. I play every day on a small hand-held Radica domino electronic game a similar variation of Block. I can't get enough of it just like Mr. Lugo with his Block game! His book really helped me to appreciate more and more all Block dominoes and stay interested with it too - which is saying a lot! I think I will soon start my own league too!
Great insight into the game!.......2003-09-06
Although I play regularly, until reading Dr. Lugo's book, I never realized the many ways to properly play. I assumed that the game was basically luck. Dr. Lugo instructs in the basics then takes the reader into an in depth analysis of the game. Strategy, training and proper playing of tiles are discussed. There are drawings which guide the reader with the strategy being taught. His instructions are well written and easily understood. This is a book which can raise your level of play. It is written for competative partners domino games, but is easily applied to Muggins and other scoring or blocking games. It is not for bidding games such as Texas 42.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review
We're constantly negotiating in our lives, whether it's convincing the kids to do their homework or settling million-dollar lawsuits. For those who need help winning these battles, Roger Fisher has developed a simple and straightforward five-step system for how to behave in negotiations. Narrated soothingly by NPR announcer Bob Edwards, Fisher adds the meaty portions of the material with a sense of playfulness. The blend of voices makes this tape easy to listen to, especially the real-life negotiating scenarios, in which negotiating examples are given. This is a must-have tape for every businessperson's car. (Running time: one hour, one cassette) --Sharon Griggins

Okay.......2007-09-30
I was better off buying the book from the regualr store. The book cost me more due to S/H.
A positive-sum game.......2007-09-02
Despite the common perception, negotiation is not about winning, it's about coming up with a resolution which benefits both sides. In order to develop such an agreement you have to be willing to listen, and to understand the opposing side on both the personal and business levels. 'Getting to Yes' teaches us how to develop these skills. From personal issues, to tactics, to psychological tricks, to best alternative (BATNA) analysis, Roger Fisher covers a lot of ground in this classic. The book is short and to the point, and serves as a great launchpad for further research in the area.
The Godfather of all Negotiation.......2007-08-27
I have purchased the unabridged audio versions to save time. Harvard developed principled negotiation which causes an unsurpassable system for negotiation. This is the book everyone should read if there's only one book in the world on negotiation! Nearly one hundred raving five star reviews from readers, lawyers, business people, professionals, students, teachers, and negotiators can't be wrong.
Yes, this is a "must read".......2007-08-19
Reviewing a book 15 years after its publication might seem a bit pointless. But that depends on the book. In this case, we're talking about a book that has near cult status in the business community.
Over the past 15 years, this book has been referred to and revered in thousands--if not millions--of articles, seminars, college course, and training programs. In fact, as of the date of this review over 100 published books cite Getting to Yes.
If you're in business and haven't read this book, you are operating with less than full power. But the book has value well beyond the business world. If you've ever had a disagreement end in a way that left you or the other party feeling cheated or manipulated, that ending probably came about because you were either bargaining about position or confusing the people with the problem. Either strategy guarantees at least one loser. Unfortunately, most disagreements follow one or both of these losing strategies.
With discipline and practice, you can apply the knowledge in this book so that you:
* Preserve relationships without giving in (go along to get along).
* Can satisfy the interests of both parties.
* Ensure both parties are motivated to uphold their end of the bargain.
* Feel good about the agreement reached and the people who reached it.
The strategies have nothing to do with tricking other people or playing games. The strategies have everything to do with respecting other people and refusing to play games.
In the publishing world, "thud factor" is a major consideration. Many readers expect filler, in the form of anecdotes and stories (as if they want the author to assume they are too daft to understand assertions made directly in plain English). Getting to Yes is 200 pages long, with the last 50 pages or so being basically a review and a "Cliff Notes" of the first 150. So, you have the book followed by a summary of the book. What you don't have is 150 pages stretched to 300 pages with stories that a busy executive would rather skip.
The concise writing is a huge plus to many people, but some reviewers see it as a minus. So, you may also read reviews saying that other books are "better" because they are thicker.
I have two proposed solutions to that:
1. Read the first 150 pages of Getting to Yes twice. This will equal 300 pages.
2. Read the book, then practice it. Take 150 pages of notes regarding your experiences. You now have the stories and filler you wanted.
The authors wrote this book not to entertain, but to educate. It gets to the point. There is no obfuscation, meandering, or distraction. That same communication style is required in a negotiation. The occasional anecdote may be helpful, but to lead a negotiation to a successful conclusion you must focus on the real issues. That is what this book does. And that's why it's a classic in the classroom and in the boardroom, and in executive suites and staterooms throughout the world.
Be sure to read Getting Past No and The Power of a Positive No, as well.
Read This Book First.......2007-08-14
Whatever you do in life this book should be your second bible! It is a short easy read, and will help you deal with every person-to-person interaction in your life. That includes your family life, your social life, and your working life. I am a professional negotiator who has read many other books (some very good and some not so good), and also walked-the-walk in real-life. I keep a copy of this on my night table and still glance through it regularly.
Customer Reviews:
Effective Negotiations.......2007-02-08
I absolutely loved this book. It is very useful and informative on the principled negotiation process where I learnt to separate people from the problem; focus on interests, not positions; generate a variety of options before deciding what to do and to insist that the result of negotiation be based on some objective standard. The authors took time to explain things in layman's terms without "dumping it down". I was delighted and impressed by the numerous practical examples the author gave which illustrated the vast opportunities that are available to achieve effective negotiations devoid of stubborn haggling but rather ensure mutual problem-solving.
The book really gives a great launching point for those who wish to carry out successful win-win negotiations in every facet of their lives, be it at home, with suppliers, at your favourite shop or at work or even at national and international level. I love the tone that the book is written in and how it is easy to read, understand and follow, making a lot of sense.
The author illustrates his arguments, proposals and solutions with practical examples which make the book very useful to the reader. His writing style is easy to understand so that any reader with a basic understanding of English can easily follow.
The author methodically explores the negotiation process, highlighting the strategies and tactics that will help those involved to get the best out of the process. He stresses the need for avoiding negotiating over positions but rather focus on using the principled negotiation process which should leave everybody's interests taken care of. The book also describes the concept of BATNA, that is, the best alternative to a negotiated agreement or the lowest acceptable value to an individual for a negotiated agreement. Any offer that you receive that is higher than your BATNA is good and by the same token, you cannot expect the other party to accept an offer that is lower than their BATNA.
I recommend the book to anyone interested in successful and fruitful negotiations.
