In Tales from the Art Crypt, Richard Feigen, a veteran of nearly 50 years as an art dealer, offers not a conventional memoir but rather a series of highly polished anecdotes adding up to an illuminating dissection of art-world practice and politics. The opening chapter, aptly titled "Detective Stories," makes attributing an old master painting or unearthing a forgotten portrait of Thomas Jefferson as exciting as a murder mystery. Feigen's acid comments on the provincialism of his hometown, Chicago, explain his relocation to New York in the mid-1960s. His depictions of fellow dealers like Leo Castelli and Sam Salz are amusingly candid without seeming mean-spirited; affectionate portrayals of collectors such as Morton and Rose Neumann are equally vivid. Also memorable is a juicy account of his stint on the board of the Barnes Foundation, whose decision to deaccession works and permit a traveling exhibit of fragile paintings he deplores. Feigen, who has studied and sold everything from surrealist works and pop art to 17th-century Italian paintings, displays an infectious zest for art as both aesthetic pursuit and business. His comments on the conflicts between museum directors and their newly revenue-conscious boards of trustees explain much about the increasing commercialization of once scholarly institutions. His delightful book fulfills the mission museums once took for granted: to entertain and educate. --Wendy Smith

Book Description

From one of today's most influential art collectors and dealers: a lively, revealing, sometimes blasphemous, always knowing look into the world of art.

Richard Feigen's fifty years in the art world have given him a unique perspective on its inhabitants and habits. He writes about the painters he has known and represented (among them James Rosenquist, Jasper Johns, Jean Dubuffet, and Joseph Cornell), and about others whose work he has collected. He writes about his galleries in Chicago and New York City, and about his fellow dealers, including Julien Levy and Leo Castelli.

He talks about the "eye" that allows a dealer to recognize a fine painting. He discusses the great art-owning families, art historians, scholars, and conservators. He recounts the story of the debacle at the Barnes Foundation that resulted in the undoing of Albert Barnes's vision for his museum, and reveals the fate of the artworks that belonged to Gertrude Stein. He dissects the art boom of the 1980s and its effects, and takes on the commercialism plaguing American museums today: blockbuster exhibitions and the replacement of great directors with "professional administrators."

Feigen has given us an intimate, engrossing portrait of the great art game as it has been played in the twentieth century.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2004-02-12

Feigen does a wonderful job of tooting his own horn and bashing the hard-earned reputations of others. The subtitle of the book: "The Painters, the Museums, the Curators, the Collectors, the Auctions, the Art" should have read "ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME". There a few useful or interesting tidbits of information buried in the book, but the challenge is staying awake long enough to unearth them.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy criticism.......2003-01-12

I found Richard Feigen's book to be a mostly worthy criticism of the current art world. I am the son of Sam Salz who is mentioned in a short passage in the book as a legendary art dealer. I think Mr.Feigen's description of his method of dealing is accurate even though my father's german-jewish accent is slightly overdone. My father may have been a shrewd and sometimes ruthless negotiator but he always saught a good home for "his pictures" and could judge a great one from a "postage stamp". The rest of the book deals very well with the gradual takeover of large corporate interests in the museums. Sometimes Mr. Feigen has a tendency to portray himself as the sole savior in a corrupt system but more than a few of his shots are right on target.

3 out of 5 stars A Lively Tale.......2002-06-13

In this account of his many years as one of New York's most prominent art dealers, Richard Feigen offers readers a personal and engaging view of the art world's past and the many issues it faces in the present.

The difficulty with Mr. Feigen's book is that fails to approach these issues in an intellectually engaged and balanced manner. Though he presents delighful, and at times humourous accounts of his relationships with several prominent collectors, Feigen then proceeds to mow down most of the museum directors of the last thirty years and several very influential and erudite academics. He also glosses over important details and omits others, presenting a one-sided, opinionated view of many events that in reality were much more complicated. In his account of the "Boston Massacre," for example, he does not address concerns that many of the curators fired were uncooperative, unproductive, or both.

Though the book's organization obscures its thesis somewhat, it appears that Feigen envisions a return to an era in which museums functioned as private clubs for the independently wealthy and art historians were chiefly concerned with objects' formal qualities. This hardly seems like a desirable goal and ignores the many financial and legal issues that face the modern museum. In the end, the reader is disappointed that Feigen was unable to provide a more thoughtful and productive contribution.

2 out of 5 stars Too many excuses.......2000-10-03

Though interesting, this book might well have been titled "Why I'm Right and Everyone Else is Wrong". This is an author with a definite purpose, and any enlightenment one gets is secondary to the book's overall tone of self-justification. Though Feigen shows an intense dislike for ex-Met director Thomas Hoving, Hoving's books consistently deliver more solid information and fewer sour grapes and give a more balanced view of the art world.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Insider.......2000-09-24

Richard Feigen has written a super piece of insider information about the art world, admittedly his own and centered around Chicago and New York. Superlatively illustrated, written in a personal style with a gossipy machine-gun ring to it. For anyone part of that world this book is a must and for the rest of us it is a rare wide-open window, not unlike reading a Suzy column in W magazine but with a few Art History doctorates added on.

4 out of 5 stars Bill Mauldin's Army, WWII Army Cartoons........2007-09-14

This work is all cartoons from the beginning of Army life to getting out. There are captions attached and this helps those who are not familiar with military life.
I think those who appreciate Mauldins books ae those who have been there done that.
The touch I liked very much was that Mauldin treated the German Soldier much the same was as the American Soldier. There is a saying a Soldier is a Soldier is a Soldier, we just wear different uniforms, and have to do what we are told.
What adds to Mauldins cartoons and captions is that he is talking for the civilian soldier, the guy who does not want to be here, but by miracle of miracles he is here and even stays.
Light hearted peek into the life of the Army Infantryman.
Want to know what life in the Army was like for your Father, Grandfather, a must book..

5 out of 5 stars A classic that is new for this generation.......2007-04-06

Bill Mauldin was a favorite of my father who served in WWII. I served 1968 to 1972. However, more recent veterans have not heard of Bill Mauldin. I showed this to some of them. They enjoyed it as much as I. The military has not changed in the sixty years since the cartoons were drawn.

          5 out of 5 stars Past History.......2007-02-23

Have not completed this copy. However,in scanning thru it reminds me very much of his cartoons in Stars and Stripes during World War 2.Know it will bring back many memories

5 out of 5 stars Still applies today.......2007-01-14

The uniforms may change, but the Army's B.S. never will! I served 4 years in the 1990's, and I could easily relate to and recognize all of the cartoons in this book. It's actually cool and kind of scary at once to see how little change there really has been over 50 years. If you want to get a sense at some of what soldiers have to deal with, both in combat and in the barracks, then this is a book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Heys it Willie & Joe! What more need I say?.......2005-06-07

I can not recommend this book too highly ! Bill's cartoons are just timeless and any one who has served in the Military will get a boat load of laughs and flashbacks to the past out of this book. I am just sorry that Taps have been sounded for this Champion of the tired, dirty and much put upon Grunt.

              Book Description

The Persistence of History examines how the moving image has completely altered traditional modes of historical thought and representation. Exploring a range of film and video texts, from The Ten Commandments to the Rodney King video, from the projected work of documentarian Errol Morris to Oliver Stone's JFK and Spielberg's Schindler's List, the volume questions the appropriate forms of media for making the incoherence and fragmentation of contemporary history intelligible.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading on Genius.......2004-01-27

This is an amazing book!! Thank you, Mr. Dubal. This book is permanently on the table next to my favorite easy chair. Whenever I have a few minutes between this or that, I pick up Remembering Horowitz and dip into a different part. I must have read the entire book at least once and many parts several times already, but I will go back again and again and again.

This book is a MUST BUY for anyone who has ever looked at a piano. I have taught piano for twenty years and played it for 35 years. And this book not only talks about Maestro Horowitz, but, in doing so, discusses the essence of the many facets of piano and music in general. Ultimately, the profound, beautiful, and insightful essays touch on all aspects of life and spirit, just as all great performances do.

Notable are Seymour Bernstein's essay, for personal recollection and an essay on emulation and inspiration; Gary Graffman's memoir that is funny and urbane, in the style of his wonderful I SHOULD BE PRACTICING, his own memoir; and as a defense of Horowitz's showy side, Roger Shields, who finishes by saying,"The study of civilization reveals the mysteries of aspiration, the merging of individual passion with a chaste reverence for tradition and the cyclical unfolding of our achievements. Our time will run its course, and one day another horowitz will be possible." Bravo!

I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Buy this book and you will not only get a superlative compilation of essays from many cultural perspectives and top-notch writing styles (yes, musicians can write!) but also a deep, loving, discussion of what piano playing means to the soul. It is at is best an exploration of the mystery of what it means to make great, otherworldly music, and what it means to play music in this world. It never pretends to explain this mystery, these artists are too wise for that, but it sheds light for audiences and musicians alike to see more clearly the divine nature of genius.

              Bravissimo!!

My granddaughter is with me during part of the summer. When the books arrived, she was almost six.
We found some interesting things to do. I monitor her tv and computer viewing. So when she got bored and it was not tv time, she would say: get the book! And we always found some fun things to do.

I tripped across this book at my local library and I am here looking for my own copy, as we are limited on how long we keep it. I brutally removed the kids from their TV addiction, and the transition has been difficult on the older ones especially. This book has been my salvation. The prereader like to pick out things by picture, my beginner read has no problem understanding the direction and my toddler and teen get involved too. We have used this to fill the huge void of television and to stave of the "mom I am bored..." routine. This is a small book it fits in my purse and we take it with us everywhere. Breaking the index down by activity type means I can have a Doctor's waiting room idea or a park idea up in running in 2 minutes. The materials list is in the margin for easy access and all the material are everyday every house items, half of which are in my purse any way... This book is a keeper!

                5 out of 5 stars Great addition to a family's library.......2002-03-27

This book was recommended in the book Living the Simple Life. I'm so glad I took the time to get it. It's a wonderful resource for busy families looking to spend some quality time together. So turn that TV off and buy this book. Encourages you and your child's imagination and they learn through playing with simple things around the house and the bonus is that by not watching that TV, you've spent memorable time with each other...what could be better?

                  Book Description

A "textbook with passion", Hardwiring Excellence offers a road map and practical how-to guide for creating and sustaining a culture of service and operational excellence. In this book, author Quint Studer, CEO of Studer Group, draws on his personal experience as a former hospital executive who led two organizations to the top 1% in patient satisfaction and his experience coaching hundreds of healthcare organizations since.

Studer, a nationally acclaimed educator, coach, and thought leader in healthcare today, is a master storyteller, mixing "chicken soup style" stories with personal insight, simple tools, and in-depth recommendations on how good organizations can become great ones.

Based on Studer Group's Nine Principles SM, Quint Studer shows how to retain more employees; ensure better customer service; build strong leadership, align organizational values, goals, and results; increase communication; reward and recognize individual success while also requiring accountability; and move operational performance for better financials, market share, and growth.

At the core of the journey, he says, is a sense of purpose, worthwhile work and making a difference. When organizations learn how to harness this passion in their employees, they create a success spiral with ever increasing momentum.

In fact, Richard L. Clarke, FHFMA, President and CEO of Healthcare Financial Management Association says, "Quint Studer's Nine Principles of service and operational excellence provide the missing link between people power and strong financials. It's about courageous leadership."

                  5 out of 5 stars A Do-It-Yourself Manual to Leadership.......2007-09-19

Leadership and managment roled into one do-it-yourself manual. There are many books out there about management and leadership theory. Theory is important because creates the mindset that is the foundation for success. We are often then put to task creating our own application. Or we could read and implement the systems laid out in Hardwiring Excellence, the singule best book on HOW TO manage and lead to greatness. Could I be any more clear?

While Quint Studer focuses on what he know best, big healthcare, this book can and is being applied to every industry. (I have applied its systems to hospitality, customer service, and production.) The fact that Quint focused on what he does best is a great example of leadership, and an example of how Quint practices what he preaches.

I have the priviliege of living the same city as Quint Studer and interacting with his organization on a regular basis. I can attest that they practice everything they preach and have excelled wilding while doing it.

                  5 out of 5 stars in anticipation.......2007-09-13

I just re-read this book in anticipation of Quint's new book, Results that Last (I think it's due out in October). The practical recommendations for healthcare leaders found in this book just make sense for leaders in any industry. I am really looking forward to seeing how he builds on these ideas in a book that is aimed at business in general.

                  5 out of 5 stars Hardwiring Excellence.......2006-11-10

For health care executives who want to see positive, lasting changes in their organizations, a must read. This is a very thorough yet simple guide with explicit instructions and tools for how to get the right people in the right seat and continually doing the right thing for the right reasons. I was pleasantly surprised that the author was able to take such a complex organizational structure and develop simple procedures for achieving excellence. Want safety and quality in healthcare, adopt the principles of this book and you can achieve success. Reads like a novel, well worth the investment in money and time. Our entire management team has read this book and is adopting the principles to ensure all are doing worthwhile work and making a difference each day in someone's life.

Easy to read and very helpful information for those in the professional realm.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and Practical.......2006-08-13

This is one of the best "how to" books on management I have read in years. It captures the culture of hospitals (and health care facilities in general) very accurately and the realism lends credibility to the book. He gives authentic scenarios and tells how he and his managers dealt with them. Also, he is realistic in that he includes some tough remedies such as helping someone find opportunities outside the organization when she absolutely poisoned her departmental relationships and refused to change. If you are wanting to change the culture in your organization this book will certainly help you and give you a different perspective. And, although it will be most helpful to health care managers, it will also be applicable to managers in any setting that want to change their culture and become a better, more productive, and more satisfying place to work.
