Book Description
For many, work is the ultimate four-letter word, the embodiment of all that is mundane. For respected business writers Stan Davis and David McIntosh, work is an opportunity to find beauty, meaning, enjoyment, balance, and longevity. How? By treating one's work or business as art. According to The Art of Business, people get more satisfaction from creating something than from doing something. Purpose, mastery, and permanence are hallmarks of good work, whether in the arts or in business. The book represents a powerful paradigm shift, empowering readers to harness their artistic energies not only in work, but also in all facets of their lives. Using real-world examples such as Apple's attention to art in the design and marketing of the iMac and iPod, The Art of Business shows how introducing the aesthetic into a business framework can inspire both achievement and satisfaction.

Merely sketching out the basics..........2007-01-06
Bringing the World of Art to the World of Business is an interesting and relevant concept. This is why it's all the more disappointing when this book fails to deliver anything more then the most basic extensions of this concept. From thoughts on Art as Business ("See your customer as an audience") to basic business quips ("Profit is like health: you can't live without it, but it shouldn't be the only reason for your existence") - the book fails to deliver anything more then a basic framework with a smattering of supporting ideas, enough to get you started but nothing more.
If you're an artist looking to leverage your skills for business or a business person thinking of launching an Art-type initiative, this book may be worth your time. Otherwise, you might just want to think of what you're producing as a work of art, and the rest will naturally follow.
If you're determined to pick up a management book by an artist, and until I write one - try "The Art of Possibility" a good read on management techniques from an Orchestra Conductor and a Family Therapist. I also strongly recommend you check out Tom Peter's "Re-Imagine" - where he covers everything from the WOW project to bringing the heart of design into everything you do.
Below are some of the tidbits from the book:
The Economic Flow
* Inputs: Land, Labor, Capital
* Processes: R&D, Manufacturing, Distribution, Marketing
* Outputs: Better, Faster, Cheaper, Safer
The Artistic Flow
* Inputs: Imagination, Emotion, Intelligence, Experience
* Processes: Create, Produce, Connect
* Outputs: Beauty, Excitement, Enjoyment, Meaning
* Beauty gets its power from being simultaneously stimulating and calming. Excitement is most compelling when we get safe thrills. Enjoyment comes from finding freshness in familiar content. And meaning is strongest when we manage to personalize what's universal.
* Steps to take in getting started: Whatever your job, take a customer's experience with your company's product or service and then find the story in it. Tell the story several times, each time asking yourself how you can tell it better without changing its truthfulness. As HBS said "if you want to know the process, staple yourself to an order". Take a problem you have and express it artistically, as a song, poem, drawing, dance. Take an email and sign it before you send it - does it sound like rap, chant, swing, ballad, etc. You're trying to get a bead on the non-rational, non-cognitive line your readers will have. When you have a problem, think of how a group of famous people would solve it - Einstein, Lincoln, Dell, Oprah, etc. Think of how people react to what you do and give yourself a grade on your emotional intelligence. The longer your company has been around, the more experience you should be able to draw upon. The more connections you have, the more creativity you can support. When looking for enjoyment, ask your customer if you made them smile.
A life-affirming book.......2005-08-18
"Outside the box" can be a good thing, in books, in business and in art. How often does a business book affirm the things that are most important in life (besides money?) I found this book inspiring and relaxing, not to mention spiritual. Highly recommended!
How to use artistic flow patterns to use emotion, imagination and intuition to improve the outputs of a job.......2005-07-04
Whether you're a student, a business executive or an aspiring artist, all can benefit from seeing the world through eyes blending aesthetic appreciation and strategy. Using the artist's eye, The Art Of Business: Make All Your Work A Work Of Art shows how to use artistic flow patterns to use emotion, imagination and intuition to improve the outputs of a job. Even a company can benefit from blending the two flows of aesthetic and emotional richness with strategic fine tuning, using The Art Of Business as a guide.
The usual catalog of examples you've read before.......2005-05-18
A new age is dawning. If nothing else, this is a new age of declarations of a new age. In the business realm, these new eras usually revolve around empowered customers, Internet-related technologies, or non-hierarchical organizations and styles of leadership. Stan Davis and David McIntosh's vision has much in common with some of the more customer-centered visions, such as that expressed in Joseph Pine and James Gilmore's The Experience Economy. By opening up to the power of artistic flow, businesses can learn from the arts in areas including managing creativity, identifying talent, finding meaning in work, and working toward peak performance. The authors are urging executives to "make all your work a work of art."
Why are we on the edge of a shift toward the aesthetic in business now? In common with many others before them, Davis and McIntosh assert that after moving from the Industrial Age to the Information Age, we are stepping into yet another era. In "Revenge of the Right Brain", Daniel Pink argued that the logical, left-brain thinking behind the Information Age was giving way to a new "Conceptual Age" that prizes artistry, empathy, and emotion.
Similarly, Davis and McIntosh believe we are being driven beyond the Information Age by three basic forces: the rise of sound and images; the emotionally richer communication these enable; and the fact that these changes are happening faster outside than inside the organization. Just as executives now accept the importance of corporate culture-an idea that was little appreciated until twenty years ago-they are now beginning to recognize the benefits of focusing on the aesthetic and emotional dimensions of work and business.
The Art of Business compares the economic flow of business-its inputs, processes, and outputs-to the equally real artistic flow. We need not choose one or the other; we can look at business through both perspectives at once. Artistic processes can also be understood in terms of inputs, processes, and outputs, even though the elements are very different. The elements of economic flow are inputs of raw materials or factors of production; all the processes of creation, production, and consumption in the value chain that transform inputs into outputs; and outputs of goods and services that aim to be better, faster, cheaper, and safer. The elements of artistic flow are imagination, emotion, intelligence, and experience; processes of creation, performance, and appreciation; and outputs that aim at beauty, excitement, enjoyment, and meaning.
After exploring the ideas of dualities and artistic flow, Davis and McIntosh organize the bulk of The Art of Business around what they see as the main elements of artistic flow, then conclude with twenty suggestions for imbuing your work with artistry. The experienced business reader will come across numerous familiar examples, from the iPod to JetBlue, and far fewer fresh examples. You will find the occasional glittering nugget, such as one that crops up in discussing rich communications: "If Andy Warhol were still alive, he would say that, in the future, everybody will be famous for fifteen people." This is the best line in the book, and is accompanied by little to enlighten all but the most cloistered executives. In the end, most readers are likely to extract more benefit from The Experience Economy or Postrel's The Substance of Style, or from articles such as "The New Frontier of Experience Innovation" and "Lean Consumption."
Find the Aesthetic.......2005-04-23
The Art of Business, with its subtitle "Make All your Work a Work of Art", adds an exciting perspective for bringing out the aesthetic possibilities in all work, even that of those whose main work is home and volunteer service.

Book Description
Welcome, Your Highness.
If you’ve picked up this book, you know who you are. You have a taste for life’s finer things: champagne with breakfast, custom lingerie, and kitten heels—even in the snow. At the office, you’re a corporate merger of style and substance, flawlessly handling the most difficult clients or performing life-saving surgery wearing snakeskin stilettos. Your romances play out like De Beers moments (well, in your mind anyway). And above all, you know instinctively that the real road to enlightenment begins with entitlement.
Princess is a celebration of the princess in every woman—a witty, delightful handbook for building your own happily ever after. You’ll learn (and raise!) your PQ (Princess Quotient), tackle the PSAT (Princess Self-Assessment Test), and answer the age-old princess question: Is having it all ever really enough? Paying homage to the fine art of pampering, the princess rules of entertaining, the princess pooch, and of course, Prince Charming, Princess is sure to be a favorite. After all, it’s about you.

A Call to Self-Pampering.......2006-04-05
Adorably packaged, insightful and hilarious! I loved every page of this smart little book. It's a rare find: a publication geared toward women that focuses on their own enjoyment, not man-pleasing, child-rearing or (heaven forbid) career advancement. There's a proper time for those things, too, of course... right after you've taken the morning off to go shopping with your poodle-in-a-purse in tow.
Nothing aristocratic about this book.......2006-02-01
I really wanted to like this book - it had such potential to be fun and motivating. The illustrations were terrific and the subject could have been quite witty in the right hands. But the text quickly descended into a trivial guide to shopping and all things selfish and superficial.
Catagnoli's explanation of a princess in theory and in practice seems entirely based on a trite model of a pampered, self obsessed woman. All based on your ability to consume of course. I shop therefore I am... a princess!
I was looking for inspiration in the form of an elegant narrative with lessons in loveliness, grace and everyday nobility. Instead princessdom here is all about 'me, me, me', Manalo Blahnik and how big your diamonds are. Burberry trench coats, Barneys as a place of worship, Tiffany-blue, Vera Wang wedding dresses... haven't we seen all these characters somewhere - far more interesting - before (like Vogue)?
The quizes are beyond ridiculous. I thought the author must have been joking but she seems to have some unguarded moments (such as an unladylike obsession with lip waxing) which suggest otherwise. I fear she took it all Rather Seriously which is why this book is not funny at all.
And there's a whole - boring - chapter dedicated to The Princess Pooch (a pedigree dog of course). Give us a break...
Sadly the main message of this book is how you can justify any kind of narcissistic, self serving, consumeristic behaviour with delusions of royal grandeur.
Books like this give princesses a bad name.
A Must for the Princess In All Of Us.......2005-12-23
Being a Princess is not a state of mind. It's a way of life. A way of life that entitles you to act as you see fit. And wearing amazing clothes as you do it. Many may find the title Princess demeaning, but once you read through Francesca Castagnoli's PRINCESS, you will see that it is actually a title that any self-respecting woman would be happy to hold. A title that brings power, poise, profashionalism, and more along with it. With various chapters that give you tips on clothing, guys, parties, pooches, and the coveted wedding, PRINCESS is a must-read for the princess in all of us.

an impossibly cute and fun read.......2005-11-05
This is one of the cutest books possible for self-proclaimed girly girls. I find myself picking it up on a frequent basis. I read it at work, while taking a bubble bath, on a plane and at the beach. It is adorable!
I like how the author reminds us that it's okay to pamper ourselves silly and indulge. She also says that a proper princess needs to be able to take care of herself, which scores big points in my book. No "latch onto a man" stuff here: I love it. The section on weddings was great too.
If you are a girly girl, this book is a must.
This is a Delightful, fun, frothy read! .......2005-04-05
I loved this book, I read it in one night - I laughed out loud and was totally inspired to transform my life. It's a lot of fun for girls who want to bring out their inner princess!

What a wonderful life Argentina Brunetti had - and we are so lucky that she shared it with us in the fast and easy to read book. She takes us through the world of entertainment from the the turn of the last century all the way to her guest appearance on Everybody Loves Raymond. We meet a bunch of interesting characters. You can feel the love and respect through her writing that her parents felt for each other. She and her husband Miro were founding memebers of the Hollywood Foreign Press (The Golden Globes)and we get to meet some of the stars they met. If you are interested in stories of the world of entertainment I suggest you read this book of this character actress who in my opinnion was a STAR.

Respect or ridicule?.......2005-10-16
This might have been the best book written about country music in 1970, but back then we were used to having people ridicule country music. The author overuses words such as whiny and corny, and he seems to be poking fun at the fans and performers he talks about.
Much of this book comes across as frozen in time, and I enjoyed that aspect of it--before Opryland, before Dolly Parton's fame, before Stringbean's murder. The chapter about traveling with Bill Anderson was especially good. The chapter about Glen Campbell, although I'm not one of his fans, fit well into the context of the book. (I watched his show regularly.) The book brings back good memories.
The chapters about Tate City and Billy Dilworth, however, had nothing to do with the Nashville Sound. There was SO much that could have gone into this book, so many people to talk about, instead of the apparent ridicule and the twice-told story of Bob Dylan.
A Classic Finally Back in Print!.......2005-09-22
When Atlanta journalist Paul Hemphill wrote his first book, The Nashville Sound (Simon & Schuster) in 1970 he captured a snapshot of a truly honest and integral brand of American music on the verge of gentrification. Although he had no way of knowing it, the times they were a changin', and so was the country music industry.
Prior to the `70s the very words "country" and "industry" were at odds. Country music was an untapped tune made "by the folks for the folks" embracing estranged working class anthems forged in America's backwoods, small towns and luminous Southern cities. Songwriters with prickly tongues and unhurried twangs raged against the man and lamented the women who caused them grief, which only fueled their humble and creative fires.
Through impeccable research and interviews with country music innovators, including Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash and the likes, Hemphill drafted the definitive work on the bittersweet sounds rising from Music City USA. The book was a commercial and critical success. The Chicago Sun-Times even called it, "The best book ever written about country music."
Thirty-five years after The Nashville Sound hit the streets Hemphill's work remains as solid, honest and evocative as it always has in this age of vanilla tunes, plastic production and beaming yes men man-handling the media. Rarely do such works of music journalism stand up to the test of time.
The Nashville Sound served as the gateway for Hemphill to embark on a lengthy and distinctively Southern career as a writer, penning several other works of both fiction and non-fiction, including Leaving Birmingham which earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
After three-and-a-half decades Everthemore Books has repackaged The Nashville Sound (280 pages) to reacquaint the music and its old heroes with a new generation of country music lovers. Hot on the heels of Hemphill's fifteenth offering Lovesick Blues; the Life of Hank Williams (Viking), The Nashville Sound brings the writer full-circle, offering a glimpse into his voice at its humblest beginnings.

Great source of antique country furniture ideas.......2001-09-05
This book has an excellent assortment of photographs of antique country furniture. The pictures are very colorful and clear. They are great resource for those interested in recreating antiques. The projects were not that detail oriented. I would recommend this book for the ideas it presents through pictures.

Customer Reviews:
Why This Book Should Not Be Taken Seriously.......2007-10-06
The content of this book is very basic, but that's not what concerns me the most. Why? It's been widely reported on eBay news sites that Adam Ginsberg was banned from selling on eBay years ago and he's never been allowed to return. The situation was so serious that a group of buyers pushed eBay to If you want a lesson in what NOT to do on eBay, take a look at his old ebay user ID's such as pegasusbilliards or zdiamonds.
The ridiculously high number of negative feedbacks on those accounts are a lasting reminder of how Mr Ginsberg ran his eBay business.
Be very wary of this guy, all you need to do is search 'adam ginsberg complaints' on google and you'll see a 'trail of destruction' that he's left over the last few years. It's shocking. I believe that people like him don't suddenly stop their shady practices.
Obviously this is not a book you want to read.
If there was a choice of 0 stars, that would be my rating..........2007-06-26
Shame on you Adam for passing this off as an informative guide. If you want to waste your money like I did, buy this book. AmberBamber has said it all. I should have watched the reviews more closely. I will not even try to resell this so called "book". I have already thrown it in the trash, and at this moment it is taking up valuable space in the landfill. Shame, Shame, Shame on you Adam Ginsberg.
Great eBay book.......2007-06-14
a Gotta Have book if you are planning on starting an eBay business in your home in 30 days. Great reference for the experienced eBayer.
Garbage.......2007-06-08
This book is one big fat advertisement for Ebay and for Adam Ginsberg's other ventures. It had very little useful information, and NO information that cannot be found easily on-line or on Ebay itself. It was a waste of my time reading it. It was utterly repetitive and took forever to actually get to any sort of information or advice. There is hardly enough information in this book to fill a 10 page pamphlet...let alone a 300 page book!!! I'm just happy I got it from the library and didn't end up wasting my money as well as my time.
I wish there was actually a book out there to help people who are not complete ebay beginners. The biggest ebay woe is finding sources for products, and there is little help in this book....OH, unless you want to go to the website Adam plugs and buy more stuff from him. SURE, then he'll help you out. HA, RIGHT!
Not bad but............2007-03-27
This book is not bad. It is good for the basics of how to buy and sell on Ebay, if you have never done it, but if you have already been doing business on Ebay, its more of a review than revelation. There are a lot of great little 'tid-bits' of information and the writing style is entertaining, but nothing really eye opening or anything that makes you say hum....It talks about doing your homework and how to to post listings, the rules of ebay but a lot of this is posted on the Ebay site itself. If you are a total novice by all means pick it up, but if you have done a few deals on Ebay and pretty much know your way around you may want to skip this one.
