disappointing.......2007-09-10
this book was very disappointing. not alot of information and any information it had was very general. hardly any pictures or anything of value. skimmed the book did not even bother to read it. seemed to be made for people who are not even old enough to get pierced or tattooed.
Caveat: NOT the Be All to End All..........2003-01-08
"The Body Art Book" is billed as a "complete, illustrated guide," which it isn't. It highlights many topics, but none in depth. There are eight pages of color photos, and some black and white illustrations. However, for every thing I found wrong with this book, there was an equal and opposite reaction. For example:
Regarding latex gloves: "Every piercer MUST wear latex gloves when touching sterilized tools or jewelry." Should this read "Every BODY ARTIST?" (After all, NOT only piercers should be gloved!) Furthermore, what about artists or clients with latex allergies? However, pointing out that gloves should be changed if the [artist] picks up the phone was very important.
Regarding piercing guns: not enough emphasis, in my opinion, placed on the fact that professional piercers never use guns. However, the author DOES mention it, which is information that a lot of people don't know.
There were a few snide comments about people who get body modifications to be cool. While that wouldn't be my motivation, if I were the author I might have said something more to the effect of One's body is sacred, so one might want to take that into consideration before making permanent changes for the sake of fashion (in other words, perhaps less condescending).
I'm also not crazy about the layout of the book. Piercing and tattoo information is separated within chapters, instead of being in separate chapters. Also, I don't know why henna and scarification were in the same chapter!
The author seems to have fleshed out an outline, but doesn't seem to have gone much further. It's a shame, because there is a ton of information on the Internet that would have given a great deal of substance to this book.
There IS some incredibly valuable information in this book -- information that many people wouldn't have without doing some research AND information with which most people are not armed before walking into a studio.

dont waste your money.......2002-10-24
I can not believe that a publisher would agree to call this book 'complete' it is ANYTHING but complete. In fact, it is downright skimming. This shows some poorly drawn illustrations of completed facial piercings/ear piercings and that is about it - there is no 'guide' about it. It shows a few pages of colour tattoos, but clearly was not well thought out. I am returning mine and suggest that if you pay more than garage sale price, youve been taken. My opinion, thats all.
Good Book For the Novice Tattoo Artist or Piercer.......2002-01-08
This book is definately suited for the novice tattoo artist or piercer. Lots of good basic information on both if you are just getting started in either field. There is also a list of tattoo emporiums/salons/shops all over the world in the back of this book. The book is low on anythong that could be used as flash, and is definately more of a reference book.
Basic information.......2001-09-04
It is very complete and has a lot of information however I was disapointed because there is not much of interest if you are already knowledgeable in the subject. Addresses the reader in an infantile tone which I disliked and I found it rather repetitive .
Book Description
Explore the full potential of this fascinating and versatile medium and learn how, using simple techniques, you can create works of tremendous subtlety and delicacy.
A comprehensive techniques section introduces readers to the materials needed, and demonstrates in easy-to-follow step-by-step sequences essential coloured pencil techniques such as blending and shading. Readers are encouraged to look closely at their subjects - simple exercises demonstrate how to search for hidden tones and colours that might otherwise be missed.
The author then provides 15 step-by-step projects for readers to follow. Starting with close-up drawings of subjects such as cat's eyes and pebbles, the projects work through to more complex illustrations such as a still life with fruit and a tulip in a glass vase.
In this way readers can build up skills gradually, using simple techniques learnt in earlier projects to complete the later ones. Each project is accompanied by a reference photo, a black-and-white outline sketch and a colour key, plus a 'Now Try This' box to suggest further creative explorations.

It's good.......2007-04-08
I checked it out at the library to see if I wanted to buy it and I Don't. But I gave it a four star... it's not that I didn't like it, it's just too basic for me. But, for some beginners it may be too hard still. You should already know how to draw well. But, the techniques are basic. I have alot of various colored pencil books, and so I'm covered. I just wanted to check it out to see what the techniques were like. The artwork is pretty good, so there are some good starter examples for others out there. I thought the flowers were a bit on the flat side, they looked like an amateur did it. Well, I hope my review helps you decide if you should buy it or not. If not, do what I did, check it out in the library first.
Wonderful book.......2007-03-29
As a beginning colored pencil artist I have tried to read as many books as I could possibly get my hands on. This book is excellent with many excersises to improve a budding artists skills. I shared the book with an artist friend that has been using colored pencils for 40 years and she was so impressed with the book that she is purchasing a copy.
Excellent Book.......2005-03-19
After checking this book from the library I had to have a copy for myself. It is an excellent book for learning about colored pencil techniques. I highly recommend this book if you are a beginner with colored pencils.
Book Description
Colored pencils offer aspiring artists a unique combination of creative versatility and precise control. This introductory course encompasses everything the budding and intermediate-level artist needs to get started right away: basic materials and tools; wet and dry techniques; the successful use of color, texture, and composition; the effect of perspective and depth on a drawing; maximizing a limited palette; and enhancing and burnishing colors. Sixteen skill-building projects and practical exercises are demonstrated through 150 color photographs, with detailed, expert instruction covering the four most commonly explored artists’ subjects: still life, landscape, people, and animals.

The good with the bad.......2007-09-19
This is not really a book about "colored pencils," by which is usually meant Prismacolor wax pencils, or similar; it's a book about watercolor pencils, which are related, but not identical. Although some of the techniques are the same, the goals are different and the results, done well, aren't alike.
There is some good advice on technique here, but the example projects are uneven. Some of them are OK, some of them are quite nice, while others -- particularly the portraits -- well, not so much.
Finally, note that the topic of this book is not drawing per se, but painting or rendering: the author recommends in virtually every project that the reader start by tracing a source photograph.
Quite Helpful Book on Drawing with Colored Pencils.......2007-05-17
I picked up some good tips from reading this book. Now I'll tuck an emory board in with my pencils when I'm out drawing wild flowers, so I can sharpen the points of my pencils without having a pencil sharpener eat them up.
Even though I've read 3 or 4 books on using colored pencils, this helped me understand how to add burnishing with a white pencil and about shading and mixing colors. I have a better concept of using highlights, but still don't quite understand using perspective very well.
The main part of the book features sixteen demonstrations that show a finished drawing and the reference photo of the subject. Using eight steps, it shows the work in progress and gives instructions for achieving the finished drawing.
The topics covered in these demonstrations include four still lifes, four landscapes, four portraits and four animal drawings. This allows it to show a variety of techniques like monotone drawing, wax resist, and using layering to get the right strength of color. It gives tips for special effects for drawing fabric, fur, sand, etc. Using the pencils with water was explained and how to mix it with dry pencils.
The book ends with a gallery of eight inspiring drawings by top colored pencil artists.
I was quite pleased with this book.

A "Best of Colored Pencil" with How - To's.......2001-11-18
The best way to describe all the books in this series is a "Best of Colored Pencil" but combined with a short how-to essay showing how each featured artist approached the painting. The approach of the book was simple. A group of artists were each given one of three landscape photos and then asked to create a colored pencil painting using the photo as a reference.
The variety of interpretations was inspiring. One entry particularly delighted me. One lady must have seen her landscape photo as a reminder of China or Japan. The resulting landscape she created from the photo took on a beautiful Oriental quality. Each artist listed the materials they used, the colors used and most had a few step-by-step thumbnail sized photos of the pictures in progress as well as the final painting in larger format. I most treasure it simply because the creative responses to something as simple as the same 3 photos lead to so many different results. Books like this are invaluable for helping to inspire creative ideas - especially if you're suffering from "blank page" syndrome. My one and only wish is that it had been longer...it's that good. All in all, a very worthwhile book to own.

Not just stuff to look at.......2007-03-07
I like this book, it is small and easy to carry around. Each artist shows how they come up with these creative portraits. They show how they take images from several photos to create one unique work of their own. They show up close detail, so you can see how that particular technique looks up close. They give you a list of the colors they are using for the portrait in detail. For example, a list of colors used for the eyes, skin, hair, etc. I like looking at the final works, they are inspiring, especially Vera's. She did a piece based on her overcoming breast cancer. It's amazing.

Book Description
In this miniature volume taken from the best-selling Darwin Awards series, men meet their inner idiots as they remove themselves from the gene pool. Driven by testosterone, they engage in unnatural encounters with vegetables, select bizarre rendezvous locations, and use downright dangerous erotic aids, thereby confirming the common belief that men don't always think with their brains. Including full-color illustrations and nine never-before-published stories, this miniature collection makes a wonderful addition to the Darwin Awards library.

Excerpts on stupid humans.......2007-08-08
Some hilarious stories, but the books small size makes it impossible for it to be a GREAT book. A good book to read if you just want a little something.
NOT A BOOK - IT'S TINY! .......2007-07-12
My son loves the Darwin Awards books, so I ordered this one for his birthday. I was shocked when it arrived because it's only 2.25"x3.25" - not exactly the kind of thing you wrap up for a birthday present. I'm sending it back and getting him a real book!
great book, but mini.......2006-12-19
I purchased this book thinking it would be a regular, full-sized book. It is in fact a very small book. It will fit in the palm of my hand. It's contents however isn't lacking at all despite the size. I would prefer a regular size book, but I'll take it as I can get it.

scholarly classic in its field is stimulating and very readable.......2001-01-14
ITALIAN FILM IN THE LIGHT OF NEOREALISM contains essays on seventeen Italian films, released between 1945 and 1982, which are either Neorealist classics or demonstrate the influence of Neorealism on Italian films made after the movement (7 yrs. duration, according to Marcus) ended. Marcus strikes a fine balance of theory, literary criticism, history, and readability. The book is an informative and stimulating companion to several of the finest Italian films, and several classics of international cinema.
The essays are on the following films: Part I: Neorealism Proper: Open City (d. Rossellini) ; Bicycle Thief (d. De Sica); Bitter Rice (d. De Santis); Umberto D. (d. De Sica) / Part II: Transitions Bread, Love, and Fantasy (d. Comencini); La Strada (d. Fellini); Senso (d. Visconti); Red Desert (d. Antonioni) / Part III: Return to Social Commentary: Il Posto (d. Olmi); Seduced and Abandoned (d. Germi); Teorema (d. Pasolini); Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (d. Petri) / Part IV: Fascism and War Reconsidered The Conformist (d. Bertolucci); Love and Anarchy (d. Wertmuller); Christ Stopped at Eboli (d. Rosi); Night of the Shooting Stars (d. Paolo and Vittorio Taviani); We All Loved Each Other So Much (d. Scola).
[back cover: Millicent Marcus is Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian at the University of Texas, Austin] Marcus was until recently at the University of Pennsylvania, and is now at Yale. The latest DVD editions of CINEMA PARADISO (released 2006) sport her excellent feature length commentary, accompanied here and there by director Giuseppe Tornatore. She makes a brief appearance on a supplement on the MALENA DVD (d. Giuseppe Tornatore), and more recently gives a brief historical background to Visconti's THE LEOPARD (Criterion Collection DVD, supplement). "NEOREALISM" is my favorite book by Marcus, and if you find you enjoy this title, check out her other work as well; the most recent is AFTER FELLINI.
P.S. Most of the films listed above are available on Region 1 DVD (U.S. & Canada coding). Some of them are out of circulation, and some are on Region 2 release. Region 2 DVDs are great for students of Italian who may not get catch the too-fast dialogue through listening comprehension, but can read the Italian-language subtitles usually available on Region 2 (Europe) DVDs of Italian films. Very informative. Great and easy illustrations to follow. Even gives the songs to practice too.
Christy Lane's Complete Book of Line Dancing.......2004-05-22
"This is the best line dancing book I have read on the market today. Christy Lane has obviously done her homework. I appreciated the diagrams along with the written descriptions and the song recommendations the most. Great book Christy!" Thank You.
Good reference tool.......2004-04-28
I have been teaching dance for years and find this book easy to use and read. It is a great reference tool for all teachers!

Great reference/cheat sheet.......2007-07-26
I have used this book on all my performance reviews, it is so good, that I could not stop picking phrases from it, and my boss had to tell me to be "less verbose" in my self assessment!
Book for new managers.......2007-07-15
This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.
A good guide .......2007-07-05
I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.
Who needs this? .......2007-06-12
If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.
It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.
One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.
Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16
Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.
