Book Description
This fun, easy-to-follow book is designed to help readers draw better than ever before while simultaneously having fun and developing their individual drawing styles. Richard Taylor utilizes easy-to-follow exercises, useful tips and inspiring images to help them:
-Acquire sound drawing skills by learning how to observe a subject properly -Work loosely and spontaneously, freeing themselves of tight, rigid drawing habits -Experiment with new techniques and play with "abstract" shapes to produce pictures that owe little to their points of origin
It's all the instruction readers need to build both their drawing skills and confidence, step-by-step.
Richard Taylor is a well-known artist, author and teacher whose previous books include Natural Watercolors and Watercolorist's Guide to Painting Buildings. His articles have appeared in a number of leading art technique magazines.

Book Description
In a small town in Northern Ireland, in the troubling psychedelic-gone-wrong atmosphere of the late seventies, Joey Tallon embarks on a journey of selfhood, of redemption, and of rebirth. A man deranged by desire, and longing for belonging, with the words of T. S. Eliot as his guide -- "We shall not cease from exploration / And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time" -- Tallon searches for his "place of peace," a spiritual landscape located somewhere between Ireland and Iowa, and maybe between heaven and hell.
Following the delusional, but also ultimately likable, Tallon on his quest, we unwittingly enter a world constructed by a character who is arguably more lucid during his acid trips than when he's sober. What begins as a baffling mystery in McCabe's hands becomes a raucous and ribald adventure. From Tallon's punk rock beginnings, to his stewardship of his prison's literary society, to his brief tenure as director of the Youth in Action Creative Arts Awareness Scheme, and finally to his bull-like charge into the political arena, Joey's journey toward enlightenment and deliverance takes readers into the innermost heart of a man at odds with himself and the violent, sometimes surreal world around him.
Hilarious, poignant, and unpredictable, Call Me the Breeze is a literary odyssey five years in the making. It is Patrick McCabe at his absolute best.
Customer Reviews:
Irish as All Get Out.......2004-08-13
Comparing this book to THE BUTCHER BOY, I would say that CALL ME THE BREEZE wins hands down in matters of plausbility. I found it all to obvious that a young man like Joey would find himself at odds with society, and yet there's a comic edge to this writing that was missing in his earlier novels, and that imparts a soft, cotton candy feeling to the book which is nice, and makes the reader feel as though the sights and sounds of a small town in Northern Ireland were drifting through the air like a dreamy Maeve Binchy novel, but for men maybe.
The extreme FIGHT CLUB like violence of BUTCHER BOY and the implausible gender hijinks of BREAKFAST ON PLUTO take a back seat now to gentle, Philip Roth style light comedy about a pathetic wanna-be and how he gets to be the way he is. We've all seen the stereotype of the lazy Irish bum with desires bigger than his abilities to satisfy them, blowing bubbles in the air, prone to a large fantasy life, and not much good with women. Now McCabe gives us that character writ in neon letters in this tiny masterpiece of precious prose. One of his best, maybe THE best, and I'm looking forward to the inevitable Adam Sandler movie they make out of it.
Call this a snooze.......2004-06-04
McCabe's best novels, "Butcher Boy" and "Breakfast on Pluto," managed to convince you that, despite the melodramatic and even ridiculous predicaments that the twisted cartoonish narrators were placed in by their author, a true and distinctive voice expressed his tormented view of Ireland. In "CMTB," the Charlie Manson-meets-Nikolai Gogol, Steppenwolf-Tarantino influences would have made for a decent novella, but nothing can sustain a reader faced with hundreds of pages of snippets from his briefly productive but ultimately solipsistic life. While a couple of the treatments he gives are engrossing on their own, and show how the hundreds of pages have been distilled into genuinely engrossing condensations, the effort expected of a reader to sift through so much dross to find the diamond is likely to discourage all but a McC fan who simply must read his every effort. This rivalled "The Dead School" for tedium, which is unfortunate given the dramatic potential of that and this book.
Even Ardal O'Hanlon's "Knick Knack Paddy Whack,"a first-time effort I found remaindered, offered as much fireworks. For a novelist of McCabe's proven abilities, "CMTB" is slacking off.
If, as the blurb tells us, it took five years to write, perhaps he should take ten per novel, like his fellow Border craftsman John McGahern. Nothing's shocking or compelling this go around.
Three examples: what was his rival Johnston's "Cyclops" thriller all about? Jimmy alludes to its contents in a sentence but given his jealousy towards his plagiarising mentor, why not elaborate? The stint in Mountjoy takes a few pages--whole years go by, with little from his incarceration to influence the rest of the novel, except to mark time, I suppose, and speed up the chronology. I found it curious that the narrative voice went into 3rd person briefly around pg. 296, and I hoped that--late in the game--this portended a fresh angle, but the end dribbles out into a series of dissipated conclusions, none of them that surprising given the unrelenting dreariness of the story.
Compared to noteworthy recent Irish fiction from the northern regions treating similar themes and situations--as disparate as John McGahern (By the Lake), Colin Bateman (Cycle of Violence and Divorcing Jack), Glenn Patterson (Burning Your Own and Number 5), Robert McLiam Wilson (Eureka Street and Ripley Bogle) and Niall Griffith (A Welsh version--in Sheepshagger), Mc Cabe's tale of inflatable dolls, IRA thugs, ennui, drugs, and autodidacts seems tired and exhausted.
nice to have another novel from mccabe, but..........2004-02-19
this novel relates the sometimes third-, sometimes first-person narrative of the life of joey tallon, a travis bickle wannabe, and takes place in Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s. joey's a bit of a deluded tragic hero; his life milestones are like classic "get rich quick" schemes that receive his total initial buy-in but then crumble like the house of cards they are. though the dust jacket announces this novel was 5 years in the making and includes a send-up from none other than bono, this is a pretty weak effort by mccabe standards. The Butcher Boy and Breakfast On Pluto excelled because of compelling narrative voices, characters who do horrible things but who still garner your respect and sympathy, and -- especially in the case of The Butcher Boy -- pure horror. Call Me the Breeze failed IMO because i never really liked or understood joey tallon, his voice cried from different directions without hooking up with a satisfactory mental reason and the plot wasn't very interesting.
Has the sun gone out? Will it stay that way?.......2004-01-31
Here McCabe conjures the same heart-wrenching sorrow of DEAD SCHOOL and BUTCHER BOY and manages to deftly mix it with the humor of EMERALD GERMS. This is a modern master at the height of his powers. He breaks your heart, then cracks you up. And the words are flowing like you wouldn't believe; amazing sentences here; he almost makes it look easy! But his quotes of Gogol throughout are apt; this novel deserves to be up there with DEAD SOULS. Just bursting as it is with all the classic themes, and each so elegantly and freshly handled: the young intellectual's quest for enlightenment; the artist's journey (as a struggling novelist and film-maker, I was particularly moved); the crazy misfit in possession of the truth yet ignored by society; the young man hopelessly in love with a girl who doesn't deserve it. Sound sentimental? Well, McCabe has such a capacity horror, for detailing evil, he's able to turn around and wring the truth out of high emotion and sentiment. "Sentimental" shouldn't be a dirty word, but so often it is because "love of mother," "longing for father," or "yearning for meaning" are so ineptly and mawkishly handled - then the sentiments become an insult to the true feeling. But McCabe grounds his story in the terror of the Irish Civil War - you know he knows what he's talking about. And he makes it hurt so good.
An Irish Feast by the Inimitable Patrick McCabe!.......2004-01-24
Patrick McCabe has long established himself as one of the more gifted contemporary writers and certainly one of the more creative. His writing style takes some getting used to for the novice McCabe reader, but despite what appears to be a confusingly insurmountable task in his first chapters, perseverance pays off and McCabe's gifts are stunning!
CALL ME THE BREEZE, aptly titled, traverses the fanciful, quasi-delusional life of one Joey Tallon from the 1970s to the present. Joey lives in Ireland, is surrounded by a throng of characters that could be either real or drawn from his imagination. His adventures run the gamut from drugs, to crime and subsequent incarceration, to poetry, to screenplay writing, to Don Quixotesque, Don Juan-like meanderings with multiple Dulcineas, delusional inamorata - all the fantasies we have grown to appreciate form McCabe's mind - along with piquant and tender moments of actual introspection and intellectual diversions. Joey Tallon is a newly created figure that McCabe now places in the sanctum sanctorum of unforgettable literary 'heroes'. Yes, he is manic, contagiously enthusiastic about everything he encounters (or fantasizes), recklessly susceptible to heroes from Charles Manson to Hermann Hesse to Joni Mitchell, given to obsessive ambitions, yet he at all times is wholly lovable and believable to the reader. Think Stephen Daedalus, Holden Caulfield, etc.
Gratefully there are many authors writing today with abundant talent: Patrick McCabe is toward the head of the line. He is not an easy read, but delving into this book will be an adventure you are unlikely to find elsewhere. For those new to his style perhaps reading THE BUTCHER BOY first will allow you to jump in to CALL ME THE BREEZE without the struggles that may face first time readers of his books. A significant novel and a true joy!

Book Description
The discovery of light-sensitive chemicals in mid-nineteenth-century Europe carried large implications--for scientists, technicians, astronomers, and for the businesspeople who soon made family portraiture standard tabletop fare in middle-class homes. In The Daguerreotype: Nineteenth-Century Technology and Modern Science, M. Susan Barger and William B. White begin with a history of the process itself. Tracing the daguerreotype's origins and development, they proceed to discuss what researchers in this century have learned about the chemistry of the daguerreotype. They also address practical curatorial issues, describing how to restore and preserve the artifacts themselves. Richly illustrated, this survey of a fascinating and ubiquitous feature of mid-nineteenth-century life also provides a detailed technical study of the daguerreotype process.
"The original motivation for our work was to devise better ways to preserve and care for daguerreotypes. As materials scientists, we knew that we needed to understand exactly what a daguerreotype is and how it is formed before we could attempt the problem of how best to care for these images... Our scientific work also gave us the opportunity to take a new look and interpretation of the scientific and technological literature on the daguerreotype and to reevaluate its technical history."--from the Preface to the 1999 edition

Collect these!.......2003-10-11
That is what the head of my fine art department told me when I was majoring in fine art photography years ago. This type of photographic collection and historical explanation is a part of American art history and not to be overlooked. The guys who worked in the mercury vapored darkrooms basically sacrificed their lives for some of this stuff. If you ever see these at estate sales, etc. buy them and put them away, there are only a limited number of them floating around from an era gone by. Great book, must have for the serious photographer.
Serious science, with history........2002-01-26
An excellent study of a somewhat ignored area of early photographic practice. The authors are unusually detailed about the science of the process, some of which isn't really understood even today. But the narrative of the personalities involved in the early days is used to great effect throughtout. Daguerreotype isn't really my field, but I'm now fascinated!

Save your money.......2003-06-15
Simply put, how can you have a "Dictionary of Photography"
without any photographic examples? I am an Amateur / Semi-Professional who has been shooting photos for nearly 25 years.
I have photographed weddings, corporate events and stock photos. As well as art photos for my own personal enjoyment. Maybe its my level of knowledge and expertise, but I don't see how this book would be of much use to anyone. Dedicated Amateurs and Professionals such as my self would know what the author was trying to say. However, a beginner or even an intermediate photographer might not understand a text only definition. Imagine Gray's Anatomy as only text and no diagrams. Granted one cannot have a picture next to every entry, that just wouldn't be practical. But the publishing company should include several hundred photographic examples for its next edition. If anyone reading this review is considering this book, take it from someone who knows, save your money. Purchase "The Photographer's Handbook" by John Hedgecoe instead.
Insights into solving common problems in photographing.......2002-08-08
Tom Ang's Dictionary Of Photography And Digital Imaging provides an important guide for students and professionals alike, surveying the basics of image manipulation and digital imaging. A superb reference, it includes definitions of terms and insights into solving common problems in photographing and digital manipulation.

Roman Dirge, it's not............2004-05-12
and that's a good thing! I just recently discovered Gris Grimly searching on Amazon.com, and he's quickly become one of my favorite artists. His illustrations in this book are so engrossing, I love to just sit and pick out all the detail. And the little stories are very clever and funny. My only complaint is that the book wasn't long enough. I'd love to see Mr. Grimly explore more classic fairy tales and make them his own. This book is a must for any dark child.
Great Holiday Gift.......2003-09-11
I got a sneak preview of this book, and it is delightful. I enjoyed the artwork and the new, slightly twisted versions of old nursery rhymes is appropriate and entertaining for all ages. I liked it so much that I am giving out Halloween Gifts this year!
Book Description
This entertaining collection unveils eight allnew, fiendishly illustrated cautionary tales exploring the dark underbelly of childhood. Childhood standards, including Little Jack Horner, Solomon Grundy and Three Blind Mice, are retold as dark and sinister rhymes about atrociouslymannered children who meet particularly unpleasant fates. Fans of Edward Gorey and Roald Dahl will feel right at home among Gris Grimly's misbehavers. Gris' extraordinary vision will deliciously haunt the imaginations of adults and alternative kids alike.

Oh sure, the liberals and other 'tug-of-peace' (tug-of-war) freaks won't like it and will most likely try to ban it - That's why I LIKE it!!
Book Description
Death 24x a Second is a fascinating exploration of the role new media technologies play in our experience of film. Addressing some of the key questions of film theory, spectatorship, and narrative, Laura Mulvey here argues that such technologies, including home DVD players, have fundamentally altered our relationship to the movies.
According to Mulvey, new media technologies give viewers the ability to control both image and story, so that movies meant to be seen collectively and followed in a linear fashion may be manipulated to contain unexpected and even unintended pleasures. The individual frame, the projected film’s best-kept secret, can now be revealed by anyone who hits pause. Easy access to repetition, slow motion, and the freeze-frame, Mulvey argues, may shift the spectator’s pleasure to a fetishistic rather than a voyeuristic investment in film.
By exploring how technology can give new life to old cinema, Death 24x a Second offers an original reevaluation of film’s history and its historical usefulness.

Average at best.......2003-01-06
The Black Diamond 2 book, while it is definately good to use as a cross reference with other price guides or collectible books, I have found a disturbing amount of errors in facts, not to mention bad editing and spell checking. I further believe that the author is one of the biggest hypocrates around. He reviews books in his book section and basically slams the KISS Collectibles Identification And Price Guide book put out in 1993 by Karen and John Lesniewski. He claims that it is a bad identification book because the photos are in black and white and are blurry. I have used this book extensively and found it to be super helpful. The pictures are clear and there is an eight page color section with only photos. I have found the black and white photos to be as clear and consise, if not clearer in this book than in the Black Diamond 2 book. The last thing I could say is how can you trust the information in Black Diamond 2 when the last page of the book is filled with corrections from Black Diamond 1. He didn't even know that Ace was from the Bronx!!!!
Black Diamond II.......2000-02-24
Very little readable material. Just a bunch of dates and lists of people. Disappointed to say the least.
Another essential book for KISS fans........1999-05-25
Dale Sherman has done it again! He's put out another book that is essential for KISS fans.Although not near as exciting as BD1,I again did learn a lot I didn't know before. This book is pretty much for KISS collectors only. But it sure could be a life save you a lot of money and heartache by providing detailed information on imports and bootlegs you might be considering purchasing. Yes,it gets rather lengthy and boring ,but at least its honest. And for that reason ,I give it five stars.
A BOOK THAT BEGS TO BE READ!!.......1999-03-01
READ ME JSUT READ ME!!! THATS THE ONLY WAS TO EXPERIANCE IT
Dale Does It Again!.......1997-12-31
Definately the best KISS collector's book on the market. Actually, it's the only one worth owning anymore. I began using it immediately and saved myself the heartache of paying first printing prices for a second printing of an album.
Even though the pictures are all black & white, they're clear and perfect. It covers all KISS memorabilia, as well as merchandise associated with each member, both before and after their respective association with KISS. From bubble gum to bootlegs, you name it and it's here. Make no mistake: this is not a pricing guide. It is a history of the memorabilia and insanity which surrounds and documents the hottest band in the land.
Dale has once again given the KISS Army a Black Diamond - a definate jewel in the current rut of material flooding the market. If you collect KISS memorabilia, you absolutely must have this book. Oh - and look for the quote from me on the back of the book!
Book Description
With Weapons of Chess, National Master and highly acclaimed teacher Bruce Pandolfini brings us the most accessible and easy-to-use chess strategy book ever.
Written for beginning and intermediate players, Weapons of Chess is the first encyclopedia of chess strategies that doesn't rely on the usual baffling chess notation. There are no symbolic chess moves, no charts or sequences in chess notation: every move is explained in words.
Arranged alphabetically for easy use and based mainly on pawn formation, the incredibly detailed and thorough entries in this book talk a player through dozens of common strategic dilemmas, such as "doubled pawn," "bishops vs. knights," and "hanging pawn pair." Diagrams illustrate the terms, first showing the basic position and then strategically moving to more complicated versions of it. Players will learn how to formulate plans once they have reached a middlegame, enabling them to make wiser strategic decisions after the first few moves of the game.
Designed for use as a ready reference during actual practice games, and usable without a chess board, Weapons of Chess is a unique and invaluable resource for any developing chess player.
Customer Reviews:
Important General Strategic Ideas.......2006-11-26
Wow! This book came as a surprize from Pandolfini - it is the best book he has written and it is good! If you are rated in the 900 to 1400 range then you will be in tune with "Weapons of Chess".
The book contains a nice touch on the "use of Pawns", isolated "d" Pawns, and Pawn structures and use. Then, the use of Bishops such as the bad Bishop, Bishop pair, Bishops of opposite colors, fianchetto, etc... The use of Rooks such as doubled rook effectivelness. After this book you might consider getting "How to Reassess your Chess" by Silman as the next step, and along with this book at this level getting "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" for nice games with important strategic concepts.
Bravo for Pandolfini on this one!
GREAT FOR WOODPUSHERS!!!!!!!.......2006-09-09
In my opinion weapons of Chess is Pandolfini's best book he has written on chess. If you are new to chess and you know how the pieces move and the rules, but you dont know what to do next after your opponent moves. This book is for you. Pandolfini mainly focuses on pawn structure such as backward pawns, isolated pawns, pawn centers, pawn chains and mostly the isolated d pawn. The isolated queen pawn is a subject you wont want to pass by. Since sometime in the future you may encounter this position wether it be defending against or playing with an isolated d pawn. Weapons of Chess of chess also touches on other strategic principles such as the bad bishop, bishops of opposite colors, fianchetto, doubled rooks, and the two bishops are a few examples. Pandolfini organizes the book in alpabetical order so if you want to go back to a subject it will be easily found. Each section is in essay format, very well explained, and there are alot of clear diagrams so you wont get confused. The only problem with the book is the more advanced reader will be annoyed by the fact that there is no notation. Wich tends to make the book a little wordy example (instead of saying Re5 the author will say the rook at e2 moves to e5. For this reason I gave the book a four star rating instead of five. Negativeity aside Weapons of Chess is a great steping stone to more complex chess books on strategy. After reading this copy I purchased The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played by Irving Chernov. I was able to understand some of the motives behind the moves and the notes Chernov wrote with ease. To the begginer I recomend a simple book on tactics to go along with the book. Overall a great book.
Adequate, but (like all Pandolfini books) there are better books in the same category.......2006-07-07
This was one of the first chess books I recieved when I was a younger and weaker player a few years ago. My rating was probably in the high 900's and I was about 8 or 9 years old at the time. While this does have some decent discussion on pawn structure, thats all it discusses. It has very little on strategy other wise. Pandolfini makes a HUGE mistake by not using algebraic notation.
The text becomes wordy and difficult to follow. For example, what could've been (notice there is commentary in every move, because Pandolfini thinks that every move must have a half paragraph explanation)
"In diagram 108, if white decides to continue development with 1. Bd3, it is he who could end up with the isolated d pawn. Black takes the pawn with 1...dxc4. White follows with 2. Bxc4, and Black responds with 2... cxd5 and white restores material equality with 3.exd4.
Instead, Pandolfini writes "Going back to diagrapm 108, if white elects to continue development by playing his f1 bishop to d3, it is he who could end up with the isolated d pawn. Black takes the pawn at c4 with d5 pawn. White naturally recaptures at c4 with the d3 bishop, black snips of the d4 pawn with the c5 pawn, and white restores material equality by recapturing d4 with the e3 pawn."
See what I mean? Instead of using algebraic notation, Pandolfini "fattens" this book by not using any notation and by giving pointless commentary on any move.
I recommend Winning Chess Strategies by Yasser Seirawan. It may be a bit advanced for Weapons of Chess's intended audience, but they will still learn far more from that book.
Less pretentious version of Reassess Your Chess.......2006-06-11
This book teaches basically all the exact same things that are in Reassess Your Chess, only Reassess Your Chess takes these basically pretty simple concepts and tries to make them seem much more profound, great selling tactic by Mr. Sillman. This book teaches you all the same positional concepts in an easier more accessible manner. These are all concepts that I basically learned by trial and error by playing a 1,000 games or so when I didn't think I needed a book to learn how to play, this book would of been a nice short cut! All of Padolfini's books are for relative beginners so if you are relatively advanced stay away from his books obviously, but for newbies this could be the fashizle!
Some other things I judge books by besides actual chess content is paper and print quality and price, nice white paper with easy to read print and diagrams, paper is a bit thin and you can see the diagrams from other pages through the paper though. At $4 ($7.50 plus shipping) it is a great deal!
Magnificent Basic Chess Instruction.......2006-04-18
There are one zillion books on chess. This is one of those. It is written in a style that is easy to follow. It uses the new algebraic grid method for identifying positions on the board. That immediately makes it better than all those that use the old method. The narrative descriptions are well written and hold one's interest. No book on chess is exhaustive, he points out, but this book does cover strategy well for the adult beginner at least. If you read and understand it you will be well ahead of a beginner. I recommend it if you are interested in chess at all. The diagams are well done and frequent. The analysis of various moves is easy to follow and insightful. It would stand alone if it is the only chess book you read and it would be well worth having in you chess library if you have several chess books. Bruce Pandolfini does a much better than average job of offering the elements and the generalizations of good chess strategy. Well organized. Adequate Glossary and index.

Don't Review this Book!!!.......2007-08-24
Oh my god!! Don't review this book or you may get fired! Ahhh!!
This book is so paranoid it will make you feel crazy. This book is like a conspiracy theory for offices, which is mildly entertaining, except for the fact that I work in the office.. and they might be reading this.. shhhh..
All in all, I think this book would be informative to people who have not had fatherly advice or instruction on conformity and how to act appropriate in an office. Otherwise it's a rehash of annoying but helpful parental advice.
A Must for Corporate Life.......2007-06-23
This book is definitely a must-read for anyone working in a corporate atmosphere, whether it is a small company or a large one. In fact, I would like to go one more step forward, and suggest that this book may be one of the best investments you can make in your work life ever. No exaggeration here, just plain simple truth.
Great gift.......2007-04-10
I have purchased well over 20 books. They make great gifts, especially for graduation.
Valuable read for those in the corporate world.......2007-04-03
While you may not always like what you read in this book, nearly all of the advice is on target based on my 19 years of experience in the corporate world. The contents ranges from the fairly obvious(don't make your boss look bad)to the more subtle landmines that should be avoided at all costs.
This book will be especially valuable to someone at an earlier stage in their career as experienced folks may have learned many of these lessons through the school of hard knocks. Even though much of the content did not come as a surprise to me personally, I still found valuable tips, a few new insights, and if nothing else the book provided a clear and concise reinforcement of career learnings that I've gained up to this point. The book is a relatively brief read and I would recommend it to anyone seeking to earn a living in a corporate environment.
Reads like a corporate manual.......2007-02-20
If you work anyplace that has a lot of managers or is big enough to have an HR department, you should buy and read this book.
