5 out of 5 stars Alchemical and transformative -- powerful and important........1998-01-26

"The Everyday Art is alchemy. Let it in, and it will change your life, make it richer, sweeter, deeper and a whole lot more fun. It's already having that effect on me, delightfully and unexpectedly." Carl Frankel, US Editor, Tomorrow Magazine. Author, In Earth's Company: Business, Environment and the Challenge of Sustainability

5 out of 5 stars Creativity is not a spectator sport........1998-01-22

As arts organizations struggle to jump into the last lifeboat of the NEA/Titanic and business executives attend conferences to make them creative, Eric Booth has come up with a do-it-yourself-at-home plan to foster personal creativity and as a side effect, to understand that the artistic process impacts all areas of life. Every parent, educator, Senator from North Carolina, congressman,American, donor, and artist should read this book. Booth is a dashing writer with such enthusiasm for the fun of life, for making things, of thinking about stuff... He has an unusual talent for writing for Everyperson and great warmth of storytelling. So many psycho-dream-catcher-recovery books on the shelf about creativity, why this? Booth bypasses all that grind and tells you how to make your daily chores a work of art. I guess he's the Martha Stewart of inner elegance. This is one that I will REREAD!

    Book Description

"Small's commentaries are graceful, informative, and seasoned by a very deep knowledge of Tongan culture. This book includes one of the sanest and most convincing arguments that I have read for experimentation in the writing of ethnography, which is supported by the text itself as an exemplar of a modest, theoretically unpretentious experiment that works very well indeed."--George E. Marcus, Rice University

"While a few Californians may be aware of the Tongan immigrant population in their midst, most Americans are unaware that the United States is a major terminus for the people of Tonga, an island nation in the South Pacific. Small examines Tongan migration to the United States in a 'transnational' perspective, stressing that many of the new migrant populations seem successfully to manage dual lives, in both the old country and the new. To that end, she describes life in contemporary Tongan communities and in U.S. settings."--Library Journal

This book documents the momentous social phenomena of mass migration from agricultural ex-colonies and ex-protectorates to the industrial world. Cathy A. Small provides the poignant perspective of one extended family and one village in the Kingdom of Tonga, an independent island nation in the South Pacific which has lost one third of its population to migration since the mid-1960s.

Moving between Tonga and California, Small chronicles the experiences of a family from the village of 'Olunga. Some members stayed and some migrated to California, in successive waves in the 1960s-1990s. Through their lives, she presents a striking picture of Tongan culture in the United States. Returning to 'Olunga with family members and their American-born children, Small shows what happened to village life and to kin relationships thirty years after migration began.

    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2005-12-07

This book is so personal, yet anthropological. It gives a great insight to Tongan culture. I had to read it for an anthropology class, and found it quite enjoyable! I recommend it. The end is especially touching.

    1 out of 5 stars boring.......2003-12-28

What a boring book this is. i have always felt like falling asleep. The whole book just keep talking about the same point that i have already known. But the way the story is told just like it's a surpring fact. i don't understand why this book is worth reading and interesting. i think it's so boring. What is interesting is he spent such a long time wrting a boring book.

    5 out of 5 stars Nofo'a.......2000-07-26

Cathy Small has intimate knowledgeable of the culture and people of which she writes. She presents a very problematic but accurate picture of a culture that has emigrated from its source and roots in search of income and opportunity in western cultures. An ethnographical response is natural to this topic because it reads smoothly and allows for humanization of the topic.

    5 out of 5 stars Da Bomb.......2000-04-28

It's hella good for 2nd adn 3rd generations to learn about their culture and history.

5 out of 5 stars A book that informs and also is a helluva good read........1998-01-20

I highly recommend Voyages to anyone who cares about people and families. It's amazing how a non-fiction book about Tongans living here in the US or in their own country can be so interesting to read. But it is! That's because the author helps us see these recent immigrants to the US as people-in fact, as people very much like those of us whose families came here a longer time ago. It even helped me to better understand what motivated my own family to come here a century ago. The book is not technical at all. It is written in style and language that is accessible to everyone.

Migrants or immigrants seem to be on everybody's mind these days. Mostly we are led to think of them as a group of "others" who we need to regulate and be suspicious of. This book is important because Small draws us away from this kind of distancing and helps us to understand and be sensitive to the individuals. One can imagine relating to these people-perhaps because Small does and we can relate to her.

Since reading it, I find myself seeing and hearing the flow of foreign languages in airports and restaurants, etc. I find myself thinking that these people whom I now am noticing are just like the ones I met in Small's book. That we share a common humanity is a message that we can't hear too often. And Small gives it to us so gently and in such an absorbing way that I think Voyages is a book that should be read very widely.

I am so grateful for the book and audio cd's. I am now able to speak with those family members that were only able to speak Tongan. What a joy it is to be able to communicate in the native language of my ancestors and have a relationship with wonderful communication between so many more people now simply because of the tools I was given, The Intensive Course In Tongan book and audio cd's. A great investment!

    5 out of 5 stars Tongan Tapes.......2001-07-05

I found purchasing Eric B. Shumway's "Intensive Course in Tongan" tapes, very helpful as a student wanting to learn the Tongan language. Although buying the book with the tapes is a necessity. I found the readings on the tapes to be very clear and easy to follow along with. The reader gives you plenty of time to repeat after them, which is very effective in learning. Also the songs and readings are very entertaining. This is a good buy for a serious Tongan language learning student. Also these are the only Tongan language tapes I could find out there.

5 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to Tongan.......1999-10-13

This is an excellent introduction to Tongan when used with the tapes. It introduces grammatical points and vocabulary in a well ordered format. It's a great book to use when learning "fakaTonga", the beatiful Tongan language.

      Book Description

The Student's English-Tongan and Tongan-English Dictionary had its beginning in 1991 in The Kingdom of Tonga. It was written with the primary aim of helping the many students in Tonga who must learn their lessons using English, and has been the best selling dictionary in Tonga. It has been used extensivley throughout Tonga's schools. With this “American Edition,” printed in the United States, The Student's English-Tongan and Tongan-English Dictionary is now available to all those in the U.S. who have wanted a copy. This “American Edition” is essentially the same as the edition printed in Tonga, with two important additions. We have added a section containing useful phrases that we believe will be helpful to Tongans living and working in the U.S. and to English speakers who travel to Tonga. For English speakers we have also included a section on pronouncing Tongan words.

In the first section of the dictionary we have listed three thousand of the most commonly used English words and given their Tongan equivalents. These are the English words most likely to be encountered in reading or everyday speech. In all cases we have attempted to capture the meaning of a Tongan word as it is used today by native Tongan-speakers. Where it is felt to be helpful we have identified a word's grammatical form.

The second section of this dictionary contains a list of five thousand commonly used Tongan words and their English meanings. We have chosen Tongan words that one normally encounters in everyday speech and conversation in Tonga today. We hope this dictionary will continue to be a help to all needing to understand both the Tongan and the English languages

      5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2004-02-01

I found the book very interesting and stimulating. It consists of the information about the Tongan culture and people, especially the Tongan children and how they absorb the Tongan culture through socialization or "becoming" process. It gives the whole picture of the Tongan society with implicit and explicit views of their traditions, thoughts, and behaviors. I would recommend anyone who wants to undestand the Tongan culture to reak this good book.

5 out of 5 stars Becoming Tongan: An Ethnography of Childhood........2001-08-05

Thank you, Helen Morton! This is an understandable description of the Tongan culture from pre-missionary times to the current trends! Helen Mortan is in a unique position to introduce the Tongan culture to the Western Mindset. She is Australian and was married to a Tongan Man, and has his child. She presents her facts in a scholarly manner. I found this book to be much more than an ethnography of Childhood. It made the very different "Tongan Way" completely comprehensible to me.

                  Book Description

Performance in America demonstrates the vital importance of the performing arts to contemporary U.S. culture. Looking at a series of specific performances mounted between 1994 and 2004, well-known performance studies scholar David Román challenges the belief that theatre, dance, and live music are marginal art forms in the United States. He describes the crucial role that the performing arts play in local, regional, and national communities, emphasizing the power of live performance, particularly its immediacy and capacity to create a dialogue between artists and audiences. Román draws attention to the ways that the performing arts provide unique perspectives on many of the most pressing concerns within American studies: questions about history and politics, citizenship and society, and culture and nation.

The performances that Román analyzes range from localized community-based arts events to full-scale Broadway productions and from the controversial works of established artists such as Tony Kushner to those of emerging artists. Román considers dances produced by the choreographers Bill T. Jones and Neil Greenberg in the mid-1990s as new aids treatments became available and the aids crisis was reconfigured; a production of the Asian American playwright Chay Yew’s A Beautiful Country in a high-school auditorium in Los Angeles’s Chinatown; and Latino performer John Leguizamo’s one-man Broadway show Freak. He examines the revival of theatrical legacies by female impersonators and the resurgence of cabaret in New York City. Román also looks at how the performing arts have responded to 9/11, the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, and the second war in Iraq. Including more than eighty illustrations, Performance in America highlights the dynamic relationships among performance, history, and contemporary culture through which the past is revisited and the future reimagined.

The irrepressible Victor Borge takes us through a hysterical journey of the history of modern music. With dozens of anecdotes to amuse, you barely know you are learning. Neither composer nor prodigy nor instrument is safe from the deeply tongue-in-cheek tales. A must read for any musician who is tired of dry, tedious musical histories.

Right from the introduction (Read, smile, enjoy, and if you happen to learn something along the way, don't get upset) Victor Borge has you laughing right through the book as he introduces you to some of the greatest geniuses in music. It's tons of fun as he elaborates on their artistic quirks and narrates anecdotes/stories from their lives.

If you want to learn about American History I'd recommend "Dave Barry Slept Here" or Bob Hope's "My Life in Jokes". Similarly this would be my book of choice for History of Music! ;)

3 out of 5 stars best for bartenders.......2007-06-08

I was hoping to learn a trick or two for a party I was going to. Just a coulpe impressive tricks/conversation starters. However, most of the tricks in this book require quite a bit of set up beforehand. They are not exactly tricks you can preform with the items found at any bar. Many of them require a certain brand of matches, or you to start the trick with a new book of matches minus two that you you have prepared ahead of time. Then if someone wants you to repeat the trick you have to have another book with two matches also removed. I had hoped to learn the tricks and be able to use them when I went out to the bar, But with all the prep work in the tricks this would not be possible. If you were a bartender this may be an interesting book for you but for the public there isn't much to learn from this book.

                        2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-24

Although many of the "amusements" are amusing - they are also logic tricks that we did in the 3rd grade. Such as moving matchsticks around to form a shape in less than 2 moves....the book just doesn't provide enough of the "cool" tricks that I expected from the description.

Also, and my biggest complaint, is that many of the tricks use the assumption that I can palm coins, dollar bills, and other items with no effort. If I could palm items, I probably wouldn't be reading this book to learn tricks.

5 out of 5 stars So you want to learn a trick or two and amaze a few people.........2001-11-05

Miss Charming has the perfect sense of humor that every bartender in the world should have! The book is witty, light hearted and just down right funny.

Miss Charming tells a story about each trick in the book which in themselves are great, and then goes into explaining exactly how each trick is performed.

I spent a whole evening reading the book and trying out the tricks. Some of them are so easy it's scary to think that people actually fall for it, others take a little bit of practice, but fear not, Miss Charming will walk you through each step of the way!

On a flight to Tokyo recently, I had half the flight crew and everyone sitting around me enthralled for an hour as I did some of the tricks I had learned, talk about a way to make time go by quick and make a few new friends!

Miss Charming has been doing bar tricks for over 19 years and is considered one of the foremost experts...ok, I think she is the foremost expert in bar tricks!

Now get out your dollar bills, your shot glasses, and your match sticks because you are ready to start baffling and amusing your friends! Be sure to pick up a copy of "Miss Charming's Book of Bar Amusements" and keep behind the bar right next to your bartenders bible.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Creative Fun.......2001-10-23

As I read through Miss Charmings book I thought her ideas were original and in some instances very simple- that anyone could follow through with them. So I learned a few of them and off I went to try them on my friends.....let me tell you, if you want to be the attention of a party you need this book and it's amusements. Young and old will be amazed when you pick up simple bar materials and turn them into magic. It is only a matter of time before bars from all over make this standard issue for public and private bartenders. I guess that is why her book is so popular with all my friends who come to learn amusements out of this fun and creative book.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of tricks.......2001-09-14

Though written with enthusiasm by an author obviously passionate about her craft, I found the collection of tricks oddly balanced between the entirely mundane to the astoundingly expensive, to the possibly unsafe.

The book is divided into six sections. Each deals with a broad category of tricks that essentially represent garden variety magic. You'll learn how to do some manipulation of money, matches, glassware, paper, and various odds and ends commonly available at bars. The instructions are clear, as is the focus. The author is trying to effortlessly convey tricks that, in the main, can be done while a bartender is about her normal business. The instructions and illustrations make it easy to learn these simple tricks. As such, it is doubtless a valuable resource.

However, serious magic students, and even more experienced bartenders, will dismiss this work as little more than fluff. Some of the amusements even run counter to standard bar flare theory, suggesting a "trick" when the pretended act can actually be done. A handful of the "amusements" call for the creative use of fire and/or extremely flammable chemicals, which would seem potentially dangerous in a bar filled with alcohol. Many are so obvious one wonders just how impressive they'd actually be. Little attention is given to the creation of an aura of magic--showmanship, if you will--which is made even more necessary in the absence of extraordinary illusion. Fortunately, the audience for the tricks in this book will likely be those who are at least a little inebriated.
