Book Description
Hair, and its association with art and fashion, has until now been a sadly neglected subject. This book provides a fascinating study of the history of hair, and discusses how fahion and events have influenced hair styles (especially those of women) around the world. The author looks at international fashion, and explores the similar and contrasting trends that have developed in different countries. Superb illustrations together with succinct captions and running text make this book an entertaining and informative read. This book will appeal to any woman seeking inspiration for her own hair, to the male voyeur, the social or art historian, the hairdresser or, indeed, anyone with a fascination for this hitherto little-recorded aspect of human fashion and fantasy.

Book Description
Kinky Friedman is back, and with 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out he gets it on with all manner of egos. In this collection of twisted takes on life, the Kinkster gives us funny, irreverent, and insightful looks at outsized personalities from people he's known, like Bill Clinton, George W., Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan -- not to mention Joseph Heller and Don Imus -- to people he's known in spirit, such as Moses, Jesus, Jack Ruby, and Hank Williams. With his meditations on subjects ranging from sleeping at the White House, marriage, his pets, fishing in Borneo, country music, and cigars to the tribulations of possessing talent, Kinky doesn't deny us the "flashes of brilliance and laugh-out-loud observations" (Rocky Mountain News) that are present in all his other work.
Hilarious, irreverent, and passionately twisted, 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out reads as if it were written by a slightly ill modern-day Mark Twain.
Customer Reviews:
"Kinkstah" in usual form in a compendium of anecdotes........2006-03-09
No narrative, quirky or not. Just "And then I wrote..." anecdotes from real life (if you can call his life "real") presented in Kinky's usual irreverent, bawdy, often hysterically funny lack of style. An unguided missile that will tickle the grossest parts of your sense of humor, Good fun.
Whoa!.......2006-03-06
I wouldn't offer to share this with my reading buddies or even mention I own it, but the book certainly provides a unique portrayal of the life of Kinky. I laughed out loud at some of it, felt manipulated and propagandized at some of it, found myself bored at times, but I never wanted to put it down. This short book elicited a wide array of reactions on my part, but delving into the mind of a man as unpredictable as this author can't help but be well...unpredictable.
"Style is everything in this world.".......2005-10-30
Another one by Kinky, they keep getting better all the time. Most of Kinky's previous books were mystery novels ,and they were in a class all by themselves, loaded with great characters and unmatchable conservation with one-liners that could blow you away.Although I was never particularly fond of mysteries,I found Kinky's style of writing so much fun ,he kept me hooked right to the end.He is able to prove the old adage "Getting there is half the fun".That is how I found his yarns. It is all the experiences, along the way, rather than the solution, that is great.
However,'nuff said. This book departs from the mysteries and is a book full of Kinky's thoughts, comments, opinions, descriptions, explanations on just about everything that one has to deal with ,just getting through life, one day,or nite,at a time. The one thing you can learn from Kinky is that the world is full of people, things ans systems that try to control you and take the fun out of life and it is up to nobody but yourself not to let it happen.Just remember, you never gave them control over your life, and if you bow to them,it's your problem.
This book is full of great thoughts and one-liners.Just for a taste, let me quote a few of my favorites:
"The last time everything was all right was Aug 14,1945.That was the day Japan surrendered."
"Smoking cigars is a secular way of religion.A way of life for men (and women) who are not afraid to die."
"Did guys like Yeats and Shelley, who,by the way all belonged in a mental hospital, ever get to the point?"
"Money can buy a fine dog,but only love can make it wag its tail."
"Like Napoleon,Hitler and Alexander did not get to have much fun in life."
"His outrageous brand of humor tends to sail close to the truth."
"Ruby had done what every god-fearing red-blooded American would do and he was one of our boys."
"I've known two and a half Governors and they didn't seem to be working too hard."
"Rednecks were coming out of the mobile homes, women were coming out of the kitchen and the homosexuals and Jews were coming out of the closets."
"I got so high I started to get lonley."
"A Gypsy's definition of a millionaire is not a man who has a million dollars, but a man who has spent a million dollars."
The Kinkster Delivers.......2005-09-14
After seeing Kinky Friedman on Larry King Live, I decided to read one of his books. 'Scuse Me While I Whip This Out' seemed like a good place to start. The book is a quick and easy read full of annedotes and lots of stories that only those bold enough can put into print. I enjoyed his very dry humor and wit. The chapter on Joseph Heller was particularly noteworthy since very few have been able to pin down this literary legend. If you looking for something different and are open enough to read another point of view, then I strongly recommend this book. The creativity that Kinky Friedman provides is worth the price of the book. A strong 4 stars. Now I am about to that on his latest book.
Fascinating glipses of a truly original American character.......2004-10-16
More than twenty years ago, a college professor friend introduced me to a talented country western musician with the remarkable name of Kinky Friedman. His band wore the unlikely moniker Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys. Thus began a journey through the diverse worlds of music, literature, politics, and down to earth, gut-busting humor. Friedman was not content to rest on his ability as a singer-songwriter. He has authored numerous mystery novels and now writes a monthly political column for Texas Monthly. He is truly a multi-talented man of great humor and ability, hilarious and irreverent as any of America's greatest talents.
'SCUSE ME WHILE I WHIP THIS OUT is a collection of some of Friedman's previous published pieces, as well as some never before released material. His writing covers subjects from country music to politics to life in general. Like a great Texas barbeque, there is a little something on the plate for everyone to enjoy.
In this era of fierce political partisanship, perhaps the most redeeming endorsement one can make for the man affectionately known as the "Kinkster" is the fact that he has been an invited guest at the White House of both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Friedman writes of his first visit to Washington in "Hail to the Kinkster." After personally autographing a book for President Clinton and receiving a note that read, "I have now read all of your books --- more please --- I really need the laughs," the President and Kinky began a three-year pen-pal relationship. Finally, in 1997, Friedman was invited to a White House dinner. Sitting next to the President, Friedman offered him a Cuban cigar, telling him, "Mr. President, don't think of it as supporting their economy, think of it as burning their fields."
In 2001, fellow Texan George W. Bush invited Friedman for a return visit to the White House. The dinner is described in "The Houseguest." While Bush and Clinton share little common ground politically, apparently they do share a love of cigars. Friedman describes smoking a cigar with President Bush on the Truman Balcony. They discussed baseball and the President's visit to the World Series to throw out the first pitch, and while nervous, President Bush explained that he simply followed the advice of Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter: "Whatever you do, don't bounce the ball on the way to the plate. They don't care who you are --- they'll boo you."
There are other wonderful pieces in this collection. Friedman describes his admiration for and meeting with Joseph Heller. We learn of his musical experiences with the Texas Jewboys. Each chapter provides the reader with fascinating glimpses of a truly original American character and, in addition, loads of laughs. The only criticism of this collection of essays is that there are not enough of them. Introduce yourself to Kinky Friedman through this book and then check out his other books. He is a true piece of Americana and a great writer to boot.

Product Description
The television series Buffy and Angel revolve around radical conceptions of family. Indeed, their coherence depends on the establishment of nontraditional families that admit vampires, demons, witches, werewolves, and other bizarre characters without censuring them for their peculiarities. This work argues that what makes these characters enduring and engaging is their critical family connectionsfor their most involved struggles occur not within the graveyard, but around the dinner table, just as the most challenging adversarial forces that they must face are not demons or vampires but the stuff of everyday life. What does family encompass within these two series? How does it relate to concepts of gender, sexuality, power and the supernatural as they emerge from the shows complex narratives? This book explores such questions. It also examines the chosen family (an idea marketed specifically by successful programs such as Friends and Sex in the City within the past ten years), juxtaposing it against various images of the fractured biological family displayed in both Buffy and Angel. Through eight chapters addressing various family-related aspects within both shows, this work plots the trajectory of this unstable notion of family, even as it is transformed, remediated, and rendered unrecognizable from a family values perspective by the unique and supernatural relationships that proliferate in Buffy and Angel.
Customer Reviews:
Muddled mess.......2006-08-08
This book purports to examine the TV series Buffy and Angel with respect to the characters relationships as "families." I thought that sounded like a great idea, so I read this book. Unfortunately, the essays in this work are quite muddled. The author begins each essay by stating what he will be focusing on for the duration of the essay, but then he inevitably meanders away from the topic. Maybe he should consider creating an outline before he starts writing and sticking to it! Another problem I had with the essays in this book is the fact that the information about the shows that is presented within them is often incorrect. I found that incredibly distracting and annoying. I am giving this book the two stars for the idea --- it gets no stars for the execution of the idea.
It's not always about you..........2006-04-27
This book represents itself as an academic discussion of the family in Buffy and Angel, and is dressed in the jargon of contemporary criticism, but is a largely unreadable essay of personal reflections about what the programs mean to the author. Better choices for the academic fan are Jowett's Sex and the Slayer or Wilcox' Why Buffy Matters or any of the collections of shorter pieces available in book form or on line, or, on the other hand, for the pleasure of well written personal essays with insight, Seven Seasons of Buffy. This is least successful of the growing number of Buffy studies.
Wish I was an Angel.......2006-04-02
There was nothing new here. The writing is so dull I could not read past the fourth chapter. Save your money and buy the Buffy DVD's instead.
An excellent discussion of how the concept of the family is queered in the buffy-verse.......2006-01-16
Jes Battis successfully examines the perverse way that Joss Whedon's Buffty the Vampire Slayer and Angel develop and maintain rather perverse family structures. Battis intelligently examines the show using both his own passionate love for the show (which is blaring obvious from the start) and a strong mix of critical theory. The book clearly understands its position within the field of critical television writing, as Battis himself asks whether any text (and it is implied here that he is speaking of Buffy) can be analyized and discussed in an intelligent and meaningful way. Battis, however, quickly shows that Buffy can be discussed in such a manner by making note of the intense fan base of academics that have taken on the show as a text to be 'torn apart' and examined from all angles possible.
As the author points out in his introduction, he does not intend to produce yet another collection of unrelated essays about the show, rather he wants to seriously look at it as a 'post-modern novel' and acheive a greater understanding of how the show is organized around the idea of the family. This text is not meant to act as a reader's guide to the show, rahter it provides an intelligent and thought provoking attempt at understanding Buffy through the language of chritical thought. The very use of critical theory (or 'the academic language') is needed to show that Buffy is a serious text, one that warrents examination in such a manner. Yet, because Battis is such a early scholar, one can see him understanding that he is still learning the ins and outs of such language, as well it is clear that he is enjoying making use of theis language - thus as a reader, I also came to enjoy it. Battis' intention here is to not explain the concept of the choosen family, rather he wants to find the unique way that family exists in Buffy and to recognize the way these shows queerify that concept. As Battis expresses: "family is the equation that both of the shows' pilot episodes open with - the discovery and assemblage of a core group - and the support system that emerges again and again, for these characters to fall back on." The family - all our families - are hugely important to us, and this is something that Battis easily taps into as he examines the various levels of family within the show. Thus, one can easily suggest that Battis is writing from experience, and allows us to understand and consider our own family experiences as well.
Battis' text engages with a wide range of theory, from queer theory to post-colonialism to gender studies, thus it is able to transverse being a book merely about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and becomes a powerful account of the ideas behind the show and how a text can be used to better understand the world around us. Battis has taken a queer little show about a blond heroine (although he does argue that Buffy queers the idea of hero and heroism) and shows how academics have become fascinated and driven to examine the show.
Overall, this is a fantastic text that uses the language of theory to build on a love and appriciation of the problematic text that is Buffy. Battis, while admitting his obsession with the show, is not adverse to engaging in a critical conversation with it, nor is he adverse to explaining his pl;ace as an emerging pop culture scholar. This is an excellent first text by a young academic, and will easily find a place on any Buffy lover's shelf.
Anyone out there speak Acadamian?.......2005-12-03
I bought this book with great hopes, the extended family aspects of Buffy being one of my favorite topics. First, and foremost it is outrageously priced at $32.00. $3.20 would have been more appropriate. I'm just grateful I bought a used half-priced copy. The text reads more like a doctoral thesis than most of its predecessors and is much the worse for it. If you can wade through descriptions of Buffy episodes as, "They are visual representations, whose imagery is double-coded with semantic "values" that often conflict, or even negate each other," and other comments like, "I mentioned a Deluzian family-rhizome in the introduction, but that's absurdly abstract," then you'll probably love this book. Anyone else will be much better served checking out Reading the Slayer or Why Buffy Matters. Nothing really new is said here, but writing it in acadamian just makes it seem new and important. I give this book 5 yawns and a 10 on the waste of money scale.

Informative.......2006-08-03
I find this guide useful in that it shows pictures of dragons and dinosaurs that are coming up in future levels that I have to deal with. It's also cool to see pictures of the various types of weapons and armor that can be bought or created. There is some useful information in this guide. For me, the visuals are important since online guides are only text. As far as the specifics such as item locations and such, I cannot say whether the guide is accurate or not. In my opinion, this guide is really cool reading with a visual rep of things in the game. If you get online and get all the text faqs and guides and combine them with this guide, then it's worth it. Just make sure you compare them together to be sure of accuracy. If money isn't tight, I recommend this guide.
Not worth it.......2005-09-06
this guide is not worth it. if you are thinking of buying it. please dont. I play the game online, and I am more than willing to suply people with information when they ask. I have over 500 hours of experience, on this game, so I know what I am doing..but I have played with some people that were new to the game and had this guide...and it was more annoying to me than helpful to them. a lot of the information is bogus. its better to just ask for help then to think you know what you're doing and have someone get mad at you. take my advice. its not worth it:).
Well, some of it is correct..........2005-01-30
Not much to say except the bulk of this guide is wrong. Someone's even written a FAQ on GameFaqs.com to correct all the errors that are in this guide!
Recommendation: Avoid.

Why is
1001 Ways to Reward Employees, with over 1.4 million copies in print, such an extraordinary bestseller? Because a little over ten years ago Bob Nelson took the seeds of an idea and turned it into something indispensable for business. The idea? That it’s not a raise that motivates an employee, and it’s not a promotion—what really sparks a person to perform are those intangible, unexpected gestures that signify real appreciation for a job well done.
Now, after having worked with thousands of organizations in the years since 1
1001 Ways to Reward. . . was first published, Bob Nelson presents a second edition packed with hundreds of new ideas and examples of how companies are using rewards and recognitions to boost productivity and keep their valued employees happy. Airplane mechanics are rewarded with balloons and pinwheels. Another manager calls his employees’ mothers and thanks them for raising such industrious children. There are ideas from the offbeat (The Margarita Award) to the company-wide (a quiet room) to the embarrassingly simple (a hand-written thank you note) to the wacky (the Laugh-a-Day challenge) to the formal (a two-week promotion to special assistant to the president). Each section includes no-cost rewards and low-cost rewards, both public and private, making this new edition an indispensable resource for making the person/achievement/reward equation work.
Customer Reviews:
Reward yourself- buy this book........2007-09-07
This book is great and works under the premise that you get the best effort out of people not by lighting a fire under them, but by building a fire within them. In short, its simply a collection of ways to reward employees for doing a good job. Its divided into 6 sections (day to day rewards, intangible rewards, tangible rewards..) so there's definitely a boatload of reward ideas to fit just about any work situation. Examples from companies across the United States make it a fun read as well. Also recommended: The Sixty-Second Motivator to learn the basics of motivating people.
Management Techniques that work........2007-08-13
Finding management and team building books in 2007 is easy. The problem is finding what works. Bob Nelson may not be the most prolific writer, but what he does write is usually of high quality, and 1001 Ways is no exception. I learned many new ideas that I was able to use right away. The results were startling. I was so excited that I showed the book to a friend that works in Human Resource at a large company. As it turns out, she had also read the book and agreed. This book will get you results.
1001 Ways to Reward Employees.......2007-04-02
User friendly, Great examples, works well in group discussions. If you want to examine your organization's recognition and rewards program this is an excellent source.
Decent ideas.......2007-01-04
This book has a lot of ideas on how to reward employees. Most of them only seem possible at larger companies or with the right type of people. Still worth reading for ideas.
It says "Money isn't everything" - but apparently it is.......2006-12-24
I own a charity-focussed website, and have over 300 volunteers who donate their time and effort towards the site's efforts. We deliberately channel all the extra money we can towards charities. I greatly value and appreciate all of the volunteers efforts and try to do my very best to show them my appreciation. I bought this book looking for ways to help those volunteers to feel cared for and respected.
You get about 225 pages worth of one-paragraph blurbs describing specific ways that companies have recognized their employees. Many of these, despite the book's subtitle of "low cost ideas", are rather expensive. Leo Burnett provides $3,000 in adoption assistance. Kollmorgen Corporation takes its people for ocean cruises. Domino Pizza holds company-wide Olympics, giving away $4,000. I just don't have that kind of budget.
Still, as with most management books, if you go through the details, you can pick out a few great ideas amongst all of the ones which are entirely unworkable. You can make a hall of fame of outstanding employees. Create awards for individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty. Recognize great contributions immediately, and encourage people to offer up suggestions on how to improve things. Find ways to help your employees become healthier and happier.
I really did appreciate many of the suggestions, like offering cash prizes, would help companies with spare cash. I think I was disappointed because right at the top of the book it says "money isn't everything" and "low-cost ideas". There were a few inexpensive ideas at the beginning of the book - and then it promptly went into things requiring a fair amount of money or are simply cash bonusses. If I had money to burn, then I could *easily* think up thousands of ways to reward my volunteers without any help at all. That would be easy! The balancing act is that I do *not* have a lot of money - but want those volunteers to know how incredibly valuable they are. That is the challenge, and I had hoped this book would help me with that. The book claimed on its cover that it would ... but that wasn't quite what it offered.
For those with a fair amount of money, the book will be a great help. However, I think that it should remove the "money isn't everything" title at the top, given how many of its suggestions are either cash awards, or costly items.
