Book Description
Includes 33 color photos, 34 illustrations, and an index.
In recent years there has been a sort of "rediscovery" of icons by Western Christians. There is an increasing awareness that the icon is not merely a work of art, but is also an aspect of diving revelation and of our communing with God in the Church. Thus the icon cannot be separated from Orthodox belief, prayer or liturgical life. To fully understand the icon, one must comprehend its organic unity: artistic, spiritual, theological. Quenot's analysis of various icons and their theological elements enables the readers to appreciate the various aspects of the icon more fully.
There are currently many books written about icons, discussing either their historical context, describing their spiritual attraction, or simply showing their aesthetic beauty. The Icon is, however, an exceptional book in many ways. Michel Quenot has sketched a brief yet highly descriptive history of iconography together with a discussion of the canons and laws which govern this ancient art form. Such "ground rules" guarantee a spiritual continuity and doctrinal unity that are valid beyond all national and cultural boundaries.
Translated from the French and already published in eight languages, The Icon: Window on the Kingdom includes 33 color photos and 34 black and white illustrations. Among its many illustrations are included examples of works by modern iconographers, which show the icon to be a living and vital art form, bit outmoded or stagnant. The book also covers historical sources, theological and biblical foundations, iconographic themes, and the icon's role in the life of believers. It includes discussion of current discoveries and recent scholarship from catacomb art through Egyptian, Byzantine, Balkan, Russian and contemporary iconography.
Michel Quenot, an Orthodox layman who teaches modern languages in Switzerland, is intensely involved in the study of the art and theology of the icon.

Good, but should be seen as one resource among many other extant introductions.......2006-02-10
Michel Quenot's THE ICON: Window on the Kingdom, translated into English by an anonymous Carthusian monk, is a concise introduction to the iconography of the Orthodox Church. Since its topic is images, it contains many figures, most of which come in gorgeous full colour.
In spite of its short length of less than 200 pages, the book manages to cover all aspects of icons, such as the history and dogmatic foundations of the art, the place of the icon in the Church, and the methods by which they are made. The nature of the paintings themselves, that is, the geometric structure, colours, perspective, and use of light are exhaustively described. Quenot provides an analysis of four specific icons to point out the general themes presented. Throughout, Quenot (himself a member of the Orthodox Church) is keen to show the spiritual value of icons. They aren't a mere subject of dry academic study or art history, but true "windows to heaven" where the Christian contemplates the Kingdom of God. The book also gives a comparison of the development of religious imagery in the Roman Catholic Church alongside the constancy of the Byzantine icon, showing the uniqueness of Orthodoxy's iconography. This is a nice touch that is missing from many introductions.
While the book does contain useful information. I found the writing somewhat repetetive and unfocused. The translation is also not entirely satisfactory. Some tighter proofreading and editing would have serve both the French original and this SVS Press translation well. Nonetheless, if you are interested in icons, this is a work worth perusing.
A short masterpiece.......2001-03-08
This book manages to deal with the theology, the history, the technique and the underlying philosophy of icon painting in a deceptively short number of pages. The author is a linguist who has closely studied his subject over many years. He wears his scholarship lightly. Perhaps out of respect for his subject he avoids any hint of egotism, prefering to quote from a wide range of authors ranging from the earliest days of Christianity down to the present day. His ostensibly modest comments, aparently centered on the icon, widen out into a critique of modern life and how it may be refocused through the contemplation of the spiritual perspective on which the icon is alone based.
It would be hard to imagen a better selection of illustrations. Those range from the earliest examples from Greece through the golden age of Russian art through to Ouspensky and Kroug, including those artists who have managed to remain anonymous as the icon demands since they claim no credit for the inspiration which drives them. On the net itself some very good examples of real icons can be sourced through "Theologic WorldLinks" and others. Some iconographers can be contacted directly on the net but you have to wait before they get around to you. Vladimir Baranov of Siberia is wonderful (baranovv@academ.org) as is Vojislav Lukovic of Beograd (voj@eunet.eu). Both have websites, so you can see how their work can grace your home.

Fabulous reference guide for beginners.......2006-04-20
I am new to cardmaking and was looking for something that "held my hand" through a few projects and had lots of ideas. This book delivered on all accounts. Each of the 50+ projects are shown on a spread (2 facing pages) with the finished card and variations on the left and detailed how-to instructions, color photos, materials list, and variations on the right. Up front there is a friendly discussion of the materials used and how to make gift bags & pouches, and to decorate envelopes to coordinate with the finished card.
I loved everything about this book--from the friendly British (?) tone and descriptions to the use of relatively simple materials (she uses 3-D paint instead of brads; that has to be a purse-stretcher!) and the "galleries" in the back that show many work-ups of one particular theme (e.g. 6 cards w/ rosebuds, with a peacock feather stamp). I pored over each page and really savored it--beginners need look no further for a 101 how-to guide, and more experienced card crafters could still find some ideas, I'm sure. Thank you, Vivienne!
Great Book!!!.......2005-11-04
Not only does it tell you how to make each card step by step, but it gives you coordinating items to match with the card or to make alone. It also gives you templates to trace or copy. Very nice!!!!

"Age is mind over matter. As long as you don't mind, it don't matter.".......2006-08-21
The above tag line came from Mohammad Ali, the famous boxer who 'sting like a bee, float like a butterfly...'
I remembered I had bought this book about the time I had just crossed 40.
On the back page was this wonderful message: "Some of us age like old wine. Others don't get older, they get sharper. The idea is to think of your 40th birthday as the beginning of the rest of your life. This is the book that delivers the sure-fire, feel-great-about-it attitude you need - good advice, good laughs, & best of all, lots of good company."
That more or less summed up my only reason for buying the book.
The book contained a dazzling array of pearls of wisdom from Confucious to Zsa Zsa Gabor (Remember 'Green Acres'?). They shed more light than the candles on your cake.
My favourite chapter, among a few others, was 'Jack Benny: Forever 39': "No matter how often I tell people I'm thirty nine, some of them refuse to believe I'm that old."
If you are struggling through your mid-life-transitional years, like what I did in the early 90's, this book offers some great company!
Book Description
If you laughed when you first read this title, you are probably ready to read this book. Starting with the pivotal question, Does media influence society? Miguel Valenti and a host of film-industry contributors present real ethical issues confronted daily when producing works of film. More Than a Movie engages social responsibility in young filmmakers, encouraging them to become aware of the possible consequences of the images and attitudes they choose. Peter Bogdanovich writes in the introduction: "In sophisticated circles today, the mere mention of ethics in filmmaking is bound to get a cynical laugh, one which says there aren't any, indeed, that the very subject is as archaic as the old Hollywood Production Code that supposedly kept filmmakers in line throughout the 30s and 40s and 50s. A laugh that says this is truly the era of anything goes--specifically, anything which makes as much money as possible." More Than a Movie is written as a tool for discussion and debate in professional as well as academic arenas. Historical as well as contemporary, the chapters give readers a framework to see and understand the issues. Clips from interviews with film-makers run throughout the text.

Lack of research, anybody?.......2007-05-23
This book states that the Blair Witch was an actual legend here in Maryland.....when it most certainly was not, and is pure fiction. Do your research before you actually write a book and spread false information. There are many ghosts and legends in this region of the state, but there are no 'witch' legends of any sort in Burkittsville.
A brilliant study!.......2001-02-20
Anyone in the media and entertainment industry should study this book. Should be required reading for students of these fields as well. I also think it took some guts to write it!

NY Times Tough Crossword Puzzles, Vol. 9.......2006-06-28
A thought-provoking group of puzzles--not as hard as Saturday puzzles, but close. An enjoyable few hours of puzzle solving.
It's nice, too, that W. Shortz includes the names of the puzzle constructors--a hard, time-consuming occupation.
Help Bending the Mind.......2005-09-11
I like these puzzles because they are really a learning and teaching experience. I do what I can of a puzzle and then check the answers to complete it or to get me "unstuck". Some of the puzzles are real headaches, but I find when I go back to easier and bigger puzzles, I am so much better at them for having struggled with the Tough stuff. I am so glad for them.

Exactly what expected- as advertised as they say. Great Friday and Saturday tough puzzles- on that mid-week day when Wednesday's puzzle is just not doing it for you. More of these please!
Book Description
Stephen Leeb shows how hard times can be a boon for smart investors. As the world faces an energy crisis of unprecedented scope, renowed economist Stephen Leeb shows how surging oil prices will contribute to an economic collapse. With meticulous research and analysis, Leeb shows that due to strong competition from India and China, prices could soon double, a cost for which most countries and investors are ill-prepared. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Leeb not only shows how this crisis will affect consumers, but how savvy investing can turn these dire times into financial gain.
Customer Reviews:
Hits the Mark.......2007-10-04
I found Leeb's book to be well reasoned and devoid of the hysteria so common to books forecasting problems for the dollar and the US economy. The worst thing about this book is the title because the 'economic collapse' phrase may cause many to think it's written by a crank. That is certainly not true.
Leeb ties in the rising price of oil with America's debt problems and shows what options remain for the Federal Reserve and the government. It's not that complicated. They have to inflate because a deep recession would crush an economy so burdened with public and private debt. We already saw this after the 2001 stock crash. They cut rates to near zero and doubled the national debt in 7 years rather than suffer a cleansing recession. The feds know how bad it could get. America can't afford to risk a recession due to all the debt and leverage in every part of the system.
In 2007, the situation has become much worse because now we have an imploding housing market and a falling dollar. Interestingly, Leeb stated in the book that he didn't think housing would crash. He figured the feds would inflate at all costs to prevent it from happening because a housing collapse is far worse than a stock market crash. He may yet be right, but home prices are surely falling right now. So, what will the government do - double the national debt again?
Look at it this way. If the economy continues to grow then demand for oil will grow and we'll hit supply constraints and higher prices much faster. That means inflation. If the economy slows due to housing or oil or slowing consumption, then the feds will have to inflate to prevent a deflation. No matter how you look at the problem, it seems the news will be bad for the dollar. Faced with the facts and inflationary scenarios Leeb presents, I think a reasonable person would want to own some gold.
Leeb's portfolio suggestions are a bit extreme for me and I'd balance them a bit. However, he's been right so far. This is a very good book in all respects.
Predictions so far spot on target . . . . .......2007-10-01
I've read and re-read this book over the last year and have to say that Leeb's predictions have been very, very good. In fact, much, much better than my advisors and their research departments in the financial services industry. Oil service stocks such as Schlumberger, National Oilwells Varco and Transocean have been fantastic performers over the last three years and continue to rise despite a mediocre market. Resource companies such as Freeport Mcmorran, Teck Cominco and CVRD continue to rise. Russia & Venezuala are nationalizing their oil industries. Iran's nuclear ambitions are partly because they are running out of energy to feed their growing population. Gold is now over $750 an ounce! The US dollar continues a steady decline against other world currencies. The US Federal Reserve has lowered rates by 1/2 a percent because they know how vulnerable and debt laden US households are with the housing decline. In other words, inflation is the only solution to the fix the US is in. The war on Iraq and the War on Terror has sucked up precious resources and requires the govt. to print more money. The Fed is in a real bind right now and they are following the course predicted by Leeb. If the Fed had raised rates or kept them the same, then I would say Leeb might have been wrong. Large cap Chindian stocks such as Procter & Gamble are doing well as are infrastructure plays such as Chicago Bridge & Iron (mentioned by Leeb) and Foster Wheeler. Oil is now over $81 a barrel and rising. US Small Cap stocks are not doing well - my US small cap fund has preformed dismally. At the same time, financial advisors continue to be in denial of the new reality. Hats off to Mr. Leeb: I'm making money thanks to his thoughtful advice. As a Canadian seeing our dollar now at par with the $US for the first time since 1976, the price of our grain rising 40% in one year (partly due to ethanol production) and the crazy rush of resources into our tar sands, I can tell you that Mr. Leeb has hit the target with his book and predictions.
Great Book!.......2007-09-21
The information listed is in line with everything else I've read. Great presentation and full of facts. I enjoyed reading it.
Peak oil from an investor view.......2007-09-03
Author Stephen Leeb recounts the anarchy, chaos and immense suffering that followed in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita and suggests this may be in our future in a broader way if and when the oil flow that largely supports our wealth creation is abruptly decreased. The "new world" that could emerge might be one of greatly reduced complexity. Systems like clean water/sewers, computing power, organized transporation and large-scale production, medicine and chemical-supported/mechanized farming could diminish into a more localized, much less resource-intensive - and even Amish-like subsistance.
In any issue like "peak oil," a multi-faceted view is needed to grasp the deep truths. This book reveals some of the same scenarios layed out by other authors concerning the forecased economic disaster looming ahead - but brings some additional perspectives from the world of investments. One can tell reading several of the sections that the suthor indeed is an investment professional and not an environmental sustainability guru. Where other books on peak oil (Hubbart's Peak, 1000 Barrels a Second) are loaded full of technical graphs, Leeb's account here is loaded with investment advice on how to prosper if/when such a downfall insues (his advice bsaed on the 70's oil crisis: buy gold, real estate, oil company stock and China/India investments).
Of surprize to many readers will be almost no mention whatsoever of ecological issues related to oil like climate change or other eco impacts. In fact, where the author finally gets around to mentioning global warming, much to his credit he brings out a potent reality rarely mentioned in the peak oil discussion: petro-chemicals and their essential products will also potentially plummet severely. These are the plastics, resins, asphalt, polymers, films, PVC pipes and other essential products we take for granted.
In the end, Mr. Leeb seems somewhat hopeful (unlike others) that technology - if applied quickly and with an Appolo-like lazar focus - might save the day. He is bullish on wind power, a renewable that is closest to competing now with fossil fuel power. But, many others state the case for a more sustainable world based on new, totally reimagined ways of doing things much better than the author here.
In short, if you are concerned with how your portfolio should change if oil starts climbing over $100/barrel, this is a decent book to inform. Otherwise, for a broader view on impacts of peak oil and the other critical issues facing civilization, Lester Brown's "Plan B - Rescuing a Planet under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble" is a compelling choice.
Ok already, we know you have written The Oil Factor .......2007-08-31
It is an interesting and well written book. My only gripe was that it seemed that every other sentence mentions, "...in my other book, The Oil Factor...." This just got plain annoying.
Product Description
When Dr. Stephen Leeb speaks, smart investors take heed. In his previous books, Dr. Leeb predicted the great bull market of the 1990s and the collapse of technology shares in the new millennium. Now, in The Coming Economic Collapse, Dr. Leeb shows that the U.S. economy is standing on the brink of the biggest crisis in history. As the fast-growing economies of China and India push global demand for oil beyond production capacity, Americans will experience a permanent energy shortfall far worse than the one in the 1970s. The result will be severe financial hardship for most people, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for investors to become incredibly rich.
This is an urgent call-to-arms to avert an all-but-certain catastrophe and a survival kit for an era that offers us only two financial choices: poverty or wealth.
