Perfect bar/bat mitzvah gift!.......2006-07-22
Lovely book with beautiful photos. 13-year old recipients don't care too much now, but their parents like it, and one day the kids will too.

Book Description
"Tourneur was a great director, fully deserving of the thoroughly researched and perceptive treatment he receives from Chris Fujiwara." -- Martin Scorsese
As the director of Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, and Night of the Demon, Jacques Tourneur crafted three horror classics which, decades later, have lost none of their power to frighten audiences. And his 1947 film Out of the Past is still acknowledged as the quintessential film noir. Yet Tourneur himself remains underappreciated and his contribution to cinema history neglected. Many of his films, however, reveal a fluid artistry absent from the routine studio fare of the era. Working in a variety of genres, from Westerns (Canyon Passage) and spy films (Berlin Express) to swashbucklers (The Flame and the Arrow) and melodramas (Experiment Perilous), Tourneur imposed a personal cinematic vision that emphasized uncertainty and ambiguity.
In Jacques Tourneur: The Cinema of Nightfall, the first in-depth exploration of Tourneur's career, Chris Fujiwara offers a detailed film-by-film analysis of the director's four French films, his 20 MGM shorts, and his 29 studio productions, as well as his work in television. As Fujiwara shows, mystery, sensuality, and a deliberately restrained expressionism were the hallmarks of Tourneur's style, which frequently overcame the difficult circumstances in which he worked. Informative and immensely readable, this book provides an insightful and comprehensive study of an important and unjustly forgotten director.

A Beauty.......2003-05-12
Chris Fujiwara is one of the world's best film critics. (Look for his soon-to-be-published work on Otto Preminger.) "The Cinema of Nightfall" is specifically about the great(and vastly underrated) Jacques Tourneur, but it is much more than that. It is one of the best books ever written about how to see and experience movies. Fujiwara goes inside the process of just how a film creates meaning, using Tourneur's very subtle genius as his base. The chapters on the more famous works("Cat People", "I Walked with a Zombie" and the immortal "Out of the Past") are the best analyses ever written on those titles. However, perhaps the most impressive part of Fujiwara achievement is his coverage of the more obscure Tourneurs: "Stars in My Crown", "Canyon Passage", "Berlin Express", the shorts. (His chapter on "Nightfall" is worth the price of admission -- a whole film theology in miniature.) "Cinema of Nightfall" is a model of film understanding and film love.
Excellent Guide to Tourneur's Films.......1998-10-05
Jacques Tourneur was a uniquely talented director with a string of distinctive films to his credit, including Cat People, Canyon Passage, I Walked With a Zombie and Out of the Past. Tourneur's best films look and sound like no one else's, stylish, subtle and strangely...quiet. At last there is an intelligent, discerning book on the subject of the talented Frenchman. Perhaps a bit more background on the making of the films would have been appreciated, otherwise this is an excellent and eye-opening bit of original film scholarship.
Book Description
The maxim in the music industry has always been "You can't make it on talent alone," and with This Business of Music Marketing & Promotion, you don't have to. In language that is simple and direct, author Tad Lathrop details promotional skills, publicity plans, royalty guidelines, and more, all supported by real-world examples. He shows how the Web and other technological developments have revolutionized not only how music is made, but how it is marketed and promoted. The old rules still apply--create a marketing plan, know your audience, be familiar with the laws of commerce--but there are a host of new ones as well, along with new strategies on how to give your recording the exposure it deserves. This streamlined, reorganized, and updated edition features an all-new chapter ("Twenty Profile-Building Ideas to Use Right Now"), which will help readers get a running start in the recording business. They'll also find completely updated material about Internet sales and promotion techniques, the latest information available on integrated marketing and e-marketing strategies, and brand-new listings of information resources.
Customer Reviews:
MUST READ!!!!.......2007-01-17
Great Book. Broken down in a way that allows the reader to disect the book and take notes like you were in school. Very thorough and indepth book. Organized wonderfully!!! A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WANTING A CAREER OF ANY KIND IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS!!!
RGEAT BOOK!!!!!!
I was less than satisfied.......2006-12-01
The book wasn't bad. It just didn't seem to have anything in it that was really a new idea to me, and it contained a number bits that made me suspect the amount of real world experience the author has. For example, the book begins describing the record company marketing process with a (fictional) story about a blues-rock band getting big in Tampa and getting signed to a national label, who then markets their record with a full blown campaign directed at 18-50+ males and females, choosing a 12-bar ballad about an African tribe forced into slavery as the single, and producing a master run of 1,000 copies of the album for national distribution. Now, I'm just a wannabe musician playing in a crappy rock band in Austin, but if that's the kind of marketing campaign that makes platinum records, I have a feeling I can revolutionize the industry.
There's some useful information to be had in the book, but nothing I hadn't already found out as an active musician who tries to keep his eyes open . I highly recommend Donald Passman's book over this one - a more detailed summary by a guy that seems to know first hand what he's talking about.
Excellent.......2006-05-20
A very incisive title that bites right into the flesh of the problem. All the problems that matter are discussed here in this book and no stone is left unturned. Vivid examples and real life situations are used as cased studies and as examples on which fictional problems are projected and solved. This innovative way of detailing a complicated and cruel world has to be widely appreciated, along with the easy structure and understandable language. An overall excellent book with little or now flaws, a book that should be read by all that want to have anything to do with music promoting and marketing.
Good.......2006-05-19
There aren't a lot of eye openers when it comes to music business but this title is a revolution compared to titles of the same caliber. This book is one of those that make you stop and rethink what you've been thinking about a certain area of expertise, it really opens up some hidden pathways and certain secrets of the trade that have been hidden from outside view. Easy structure and good presentation draw the eye of the perspective buyer couple with some interesting testimonies from real life experiences.
Excellent read........2006-05-16
Even if you're a veteran in the industry, I highly suggest reading this book. Theres something to be learned for anyone who reads it. I bought it in hopes that it would cover the business of internet marketing, but it didn't do that as well as I would have hoped. Despite this fact, it is still a great book. Book Description
Dark dwarves...darker schemes...and rising chaos.
For generations the baser clans of Thorbardin have raged against Hylar, ancestral rulers of the vast underground realm. Now, the finest Hylar army has marched away to face the Knights of Takhisis -- and the dark dwarves see their opportunity.
Besieged in the Life Tree that is their fortress city, the Hylar struggle to survive. Magic and madness threaten from all sides as Theiwar, Daergar, and Klar press the onslaught with bloodthirsty frenzy.
The forces of Chaos join the battle against all dwarvenkind. And hopes grow dim as the Hylar face ultimate betrayal and confront the specter of Torbardin's ultimate doom.
This exciting new novel by popular
Dragonlance author Douglas Niles tells the tale of the legendary dwarven kingdom during the Chaos War, the backdrop for The New York Times best-selling novel, Dragons of Summer Flame.
Customer Reviews:
Chaos comes to Thorbardin!!.......2002-10-13
You don't realize the extent of damage The Chaos War had on Krynn until you read this series. Good Lord! In many ways, the war did destroy Krnn.
Nobody suffered as great a loss as the dwarves. It's truly saddening to read what happened to Thorbardin. It';s amazing the race survived at all. The book had the right amount of plot twists, good heros & villians & the last 1/3 of it is absolutely gut-wrenchingly sad. A great read.
Not up to dragonlance standards. But still ok........2001-05-18
Not exactly a quick read or a page turner but still a good book with a good amount of depth.
Highly unprofessional.......2000-11-26
Reading throug this mess was like banging my head to the wall. Niles is undoubtedly one of the most talentless writers in the TSR/WoC branch. The whole book is on autopilot, characters fall out and then fall back in, but you don't care, because you can't get a hold on them. The villain and the surprise, even the setting are all obviously just plot devices, I couldn't care less. The dwarven kingdom has never been sooo boring and dull. There is no sense of time, doom and loss, and the whole is impersonal. Skip it and you won't miss a beat [in the series].
Kill em all, let Margaret sort em out.......2000-07-13
I was not particularly impressed by "The Last Thane". On the whole, it was one of Doug's lesser works in my opinion. While he had some really good material in going into depth about life in Thorbardin, and the relations between dwarven clans, it seemed to me like he was just trying to see how many dwarves he could kill off at once, so no one would wonder where they were when the Fifth Age writing started.
A So-So Effort.......2000-06-03
Niles is at his best with well-rounded villians and well-rounded heroes, as in _The Puppet King_. _The Last Thane_, regretably, lacks them and suffers because of it.
The action of the book, and there is certainly a lot of action, revolves around a civil war of the dwarves in Thorbardin and the sudden appearance of a vast army of chaos creatures.
The plot has a great deal of potential, but the characters Niles creates seem one-dimensional, almost cartoonish at times. They seem to be more stereotypes of each dwarven subrace instead of individuals. They lack credible motivations and they are sometimes uninteresting because of it. It is hard to care about the protagonists or antagonists.
Bundled into the mix is a number of highly unlikely events, even for a Dragonlance novel. Some of the circumstances are so improbable, such as the numerous encounters of the protagonist and his gully dwarf friends with an assasin, that the reader loses his suspension of reality.
If you're looking for an action novel and don't want to worry too much about thinking, purchase and enjoy this novel. If you are on a quest to read every Dragonlance novel, it's worthwhile. Otherwise, skip it.

Customer Reviews:
It is a fun book!.......1999-09-01
It is a fun book! I have seen the excellent original La Femme Nikita and the pathetic US remade. I love the idea that the book drew a nice comparison between the production/directors/leading actresses of the two movies and TV series. It juxtaposed them with one another providing solid background on how did the whole thing get evolved from a French movie that marginally made it in the US box office to an amazing TV hit series. The episode guide was very precise and gave the reader a good idea of the narrative. More, The Idiot's Guide To Section One is HILARIOUS!! If you are a fan of the TV series, you will find it real handy to have this book when you are in the mood to do some reading about the series or Peta Wilson. One drawback is that there are very few pictures of Peta and they are in black and white. (Just a thought: if the episodes of the La Femme Nikita could be in released in tapes like X-File did, it would be great. Also, I think this series would be even a bigger success, if it could be run on the major network.)
Only get the book if you are a new person to the show!.......1999-08-25
I think you should only get this book if you have not been watching the show since the start of it. A hard core fan would know all of the stuff that is in it. There are not alot of pictures and the pictures that are there are all in b/w.
Nothing New.......1999-08-22
After reading what was being said about the book on this page. I have went out to buy the book, but didn't after looking over the book. I haven't read any backstage gossip, nor anything about a realtionship between Peta and Matthew. Maybe there is another book with the backstage information as well as the information about Peta and Matthew.
The book didn't have anything in it that I haven't read online. I was hoping that it was a book that really lets us get to know the characters behind the masks if you know what I mean. This book is for newcomers that haven't yet seen LFN. The fans that are now starting to see season 1.
Hokey, Crappy photos.......1999-07-02
This book is great for a guide that takes you 3/4 of the way through the second season, but any fan could have written it. The front cover is also pretty packaging... Inside doesn't look like much. There are few images, and few insights.
It's a GREAT book!.......1999-06-18
This book was great! It offered a lot of info. and I enjoyed a whole lot! Definately worth reading! This show is sooo great I'm suprised there aren't more books! It's wonderful!
