Book Description
Lucy Lippard is one of the most provocative and groundbreaking art critics of the last two decades. A catalyst for social and artistic change, Lippard's writings show the impact of feminism on art, and art on feminism. The Pink Glass Swan brings together Lippard's essays and articles from various magazines, catalogs, and newspapers from the last ten years. Through the eyes of this influential and important critic, The Pink Glass Swan chronicles the sweeping changes in women's art over the last thirty years.
Customer Reviews:
Acknowledging a Feminist Art Practice.......2007-01-09
Lucy Lippard's text is written in what is now labeled a 'feminist' narrative because it intertwines art world events alongside the author's awakening to her own liberation. That is, to examine the work of the women artists that were working on their own art- to the side of the men in their lives, in their studios, and in their schools.
'The Pink Glass Swan' works wonderfully as an introduction to the historical importance of this paradigm shift in the 1980's. Lippard uses language that strives to include the reader, as opposed to throwing tons of art theory and insider references. And, as you read the text, (in my case along with a class of college students) it becomes clear that this was largely the intention of feminist criticism-- to make it available to everyone to understand and to put into practice. I can highly recommend it.
Great Feminist and Art theory.......2005-08-29
This is an excellent anthology of Lippard's essays. I found it especially helpful as I am writing a thesis on "third wave" feminist art. Her essays are thoughtful and insightful without being full of jargon, so even those with no background in feminist theory can get the gist of the writing. Its great to be able to read the oldies and see how much has- and sadly, hasn't- changed. Most interesting are Lippard's updates and introductions to the older essays, in which she prefaces them with how her thoughts on the topics have changed or shifted since the essays were written.
This is a really thorough and broad reaching book on art and feminism.I highly suggest it for all feminist artists (especially younger ones who missed the first wave) and those who study feminism and/or art.
A powerful work.......2003-04-22
This book is must for women artists, either young or firmly established. Originally published as From The Center, it helped me to understand my relationship to my artwork and my work's relationship to the various aspects of the larger art world. When I was attending art school, all my fellow women grad students read this book and, interestingly, responded enthusiastically to different sections. Lippard is a grounded, intelligent writer with a wry sense of humor and has a keen sense of observation. Her other books are also excellent, especially Overlay: Contemporary Art and the Art of Prehistory and Sense of Place.
Excellent for the begginning feminist.......1999-06-21
As a young college student and newly marked feminist this book filled in important gaps surrounding women's art and feminism that was lacking in my male-dominated art history classes. It gave me a sense of history and brought up many issues in feminist art I had not yet discovered. It also sent me to library to look up many female artists in hope to find more information. The book was very easy to read and wasn't weighted down with to much academia.

Book Description
DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?
Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy is a hilarious collection of over 275 lines people think they've
heard in pop songs from the 1960s to the 1990s. Now you can come out of that closet and proudly sing
whatever you think you hear. Don't deny it! You know you've sung totally absurd lyrics in
place of the real-and usually less interesting-ones. (It's nothing to ashamed of-most rock stars
never took elocution classes.) Breeze through some of the world's most widely misinterpreted lyrics,
including:
"The ants are my friends/They're blowin' in the wind" ("The answer my friend/Is blowing' in the
wind"-Bob Dylan)
"Sweet dreams are made of cheese" ("Sweet dreams are made of this"-Eurythmics)
"The girl with colitis goes by" ("The girl with kaleidoscope eyes"-The Beatles)
Whether it's Eddie Vedder singing about "forty-five versions of a pelican" or Bruce Springsteen
proclaiming "everybody's got a hungry horse," 'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy is sure to make
you want to get your hearing checked.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing enough with a couple of side splitters.......2006-12-27
This is the first of Gavin Edwards' series of misheard lyrics. It's definitely funny at points and some of the lyrics are mangled beyond belief. Some of the misinterpretations are pretty well known but some seem a bit far fetched (A la "STOP THE CATBOX"/"ROCK THE CASBAH" of the Verizon commercials of late) It's interesting to note that Hendrix knew of the misheard version and at some concerts performed "Purple Haze" with the incorrect lyrics. (Avoid the second one in the series, its not very funny)
Simply E.......2006-11-06
While I found most of the erroneous lyrics very funny, I also found there were a few songs that were missing.
Just Okay.......2006-03-20
It wasn't what I expected. It is kind of amusing however if actually sing the tune with the misheard lyric they provide.
Great to read together.......2005-06-10
My best friend and I picked up a copy of this book at a used book store on a lark, and afterwards, we stopped for ice cream. We brought the book in with us, and began to read. It was hysterical! It was a lot of fun to read the misheard lyrics together, and we were laughing so hard we had the attention of everyone else at the ice cream parlor. My best friend picked a guy up because of this book. Fun stuff.
Lyrics, Please!.......2003-08-31
I have read and sung so many lyrics in my career - and heard so many funny mis-interpretations of lyrics. My own kids "murdered" some lyrics when they were small. This book is a kick! Just sit back and relax and enjoy some chuckles at the end of the day!!
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Hilarious!.......2007-02-17
A friend told me about this book; it's by far the funniest one I've ever read on the subject of misheard lyrics! I recommend it highly--full of great laughs!

silly calendar.......2007-05-07
Not quite what I expected, especially as I made the MISTAKE of buying a 2006 calendar in January of 2007. The lyrics are not that funny or interesting. It's okay.

Frequently find yourself completely confused by the words to the songs you hear? Have you ever wondered why Guns N'Roses wanted to visit the prairie-dog city? Why spend all that time wondering what the heck those mumbling musicians are saying? The 'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy 2002 Calendar, based on author Gavin Edward's popular book series, which includes 'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy, He's Got The Whole World In His Pants, When A Man Loves A Walnut, and Deck The Halls With Buddy Holly, and including new entries as well, is here to help. This day-to-day calendar clarifies musical misconceptions by presenting readers with a misheard lyric, the singer and song title, and then the correct lyric. Many entries are accompanied by clever illustrations and singers' birthdays as well, making this calendar an entirely entertaining - and melodious - way to get through the year.
Customer Reviews:
'Scuse me while I use my only joke in the title........2004-01-22
There are a few things that make getting the lyrics wrong great or interesting. The first is if the mis-interpretation is plausible, the second is that the wrong lyric makes some since in context to the song, the third is that it is funny. The title is a great example of a great and hilarious misunderstood lyric. You can imagine Jimmie stopping in the middle of the song and layin' one on his bass player.
Unfortunately, everything else in the calender is terrible. The wrong lyrics provided are nonsense. So unless you think nonsense is interesting or funny, go by Jimmie Hendrix Greatest hits instead.
The only person laughing is the guy who wrote this crap. He got me. I bought it.
This was the worst waste of money ever!.......2002-01-31
I can't believe I bought this calendar. Who comes up with these lyrics? I mean, come on. The only lyric that might have been actually misheard by anyone who listens to music could possibly be the title, "Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy". Don't waste your money on this.
Old Old Old.......2001-12-06
When would it be time for Gavin to finally write a new book with new illustrations? The four were each written on a period of years: 1995 - 1998. My 2001 calendar didn't have many new entries, most of them were from "He's Got The Whole...", and a handful from his other books. Think CLEAN humor, people.
Could be a definete miss.

Book Description
If you really think that JImi Hendrix sang "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy" in "Purple Haze," this might not be the calendar for you. You may fail to see the humor in such misheard song lyrics as "Soup and salad bar" instead of "Suicide Blonde" or "I suck on that emotion" instead of "I second that emotion." Once again, Gavin Edwards recounts a new or classic misheard lyric, the song title and artist, and the real lyric on each page of this calendar based on his books 'Scuse Me Whil I Kiss This Guy, He's Got the Whole World in His Pants, When A Man Loves A Walnut, and Deck the Halls with Buddy Holly. Many pages also include singers' birthdays and drawings illustrating the incorrect lyric. Of course, if you know your music and know that Jimi was actually singing, "'Scuse me while I kiss the sky" (or just want the chance to mock someone each day), this calendar (in the actual words of Kool and the Gang) is a celebration that'll last throughout the year.

Book Description
A long time ago, when I was a young dancer in
New York City, I fell in love with Jimmy Dean
and he fell in love with me.
So begins this beguiling memoir of Liz "Dizzy" Sheridan's passionate yet ill-fated romance with the young, magnetic, soon-to-be-supernova James Dean. The year was 1951. Dean had recently arrived in Manhattan in search of Broadway stardom. Sheridan was a tall, graceful aspiring dancer. They met one rainy afternoon in the parlor of the Rehearsal Club, a chaperoned boardinghouse for young actresses -- and before long Dizzy and Jimmy were inseparable. Together they hunted for jobs, haunted all-night bars and diners, and gloried in the innocent rebellion of early-'50s bohemian New York. Dizzy Sheridan and James Dean were lovers; they lived together; as even ardent Dean fans may be surprised to learn, they were engaged to be married. But when Dean began to find success on the Broadway stage and then was lured to Hollywood, the couple parted amid tears and broken dreams -- dreams that would be dashed forever when Dean died in a car crash in 1955, not long after seeing Dizzy for the last time.
Dizzy & Jimmy marks the first time Liz Sheridan has written about this joyous yet ill-starred romance. She brings us closer than we have ever been to the vibrant young actor before he became a Hollywood icon, capturing his unstudied charm, his complicated psyche, the spontaneous delight he took from the world around him, and the passion he invested in his work and life. It is a journey that takes in many locales, from Dean's boyhood home in Fairmount, Indiana, to Sheridan's recuperative travels through the Caribbean after their breakup. But at its heart Dizzy & Jimmy is the story of a love affair with Manhattan -- of nights spent stealing kisses in Times Square, sharing a walkup in the Hargrave Hotel, dancing after hours beneath the stars in Grand Central Station. And in Sheridan's bittersweet, embraceable telling, it becomes a story no reader, Dean fan or otherwise, will soon forget.
Customer Reviews:
bittersweet love story...a story that will warm your heart.......2007-07-07
I bought this book online because I couldn't wait for it to come to the nearest Borders store. I received it earlier than expected and I was very excited. Elizabeth Sheridan describes to us a man who did not always appear to others the way she knew him. Many other books describe James Dean as being an angry, introverted, and selfish young man. All this may have been true about him, but he also had a sweet side to him which was not always seen. From this book, it is clear that it meant you meant something to him if he expressed his feelings, thoughts, and emotions to you. It portrays a young man who had a sense of humor and who was a hopeless romantic. Reading what Elizabeth Sheridan has said about him shows his fans that he was capable of love and that other books about him aren't 100% true, that he wasn't a cold-hearted person. This is a firsthand account of James, before he became a star and it truly captures the essence of who he was, who he was when he let his guard down and trusted others. By the end of the book, I started to tear up when they parted from each other because I myself wouldn't have been able to do that with someone I loved. I then broke down crying when it described how Sheridan found out about his death. Just reading the words about it made me feel so empty inside, as if I had known him personally, as if he had once been a part of my life. It's as if I had been there. This book is truly a heart-felt account of a misunderstood young man, who in the midst of all things, really wanted to love and be loved. I love this book and whoever reads it shouldn't be disappointed.
its just love.......2005-05-18
Its just love, thats all it is. Its not ment to BE a story about the great James Dean. Its truly about a girl named Dizzy and the boy named Jimmy who she fell in love with. Somehow you can drift into this book and become the characters, you can feel the love, you can remember how it feels to be in that kind of love, where nothing else matters and reality is just something other people talk about. I read this book over and over. I bought it because it was about James Dean and i am a fan. I love it because its about the kinda of love that everyone should get to experience at least once.
I Feel Like I Know James Dean Now!.......2005-03-24
This book by Liz Sheridan (known to many as Jerry's mom on "Seinfeld") is by far the best personal account about James that I've found. It was an engaging read with no dry spots. I could perfectly imagine what their life was like in New York in the '50's. After reading this book, I feel like I have a better idea of what James Dean was really like in real life, not how he is depicted by biographers who never knew him personally. This is not a romanticized view of James Dean, though. There are some pretty intense arguments between he and Ms. Sheridan throughout the book! For anyone who loves memoirs and James Dean, buy this book right now!
Poignant Love Story.......2004-08-30
This is the love story of James Dean and Liz Sheridan (she played Jerry Seinfeld's mother on "Seinfeld.") They met in New York when he was barely scraping by and not yet famous and she a dancer. She was quite a looker with a long ponytail and he was of course scruffy and hunched over with the ever-present cigarette hanging from his lips. I enjoyed reading about their short-lived romance as it shows a side of James Dean that I'm sure he did not reveal to too many people - very sweet and tender. If you are a James Dean fan you will enjoy this book.
Reliving history.......2004-08-05
I grew up in Hollywood acting in plays and met my own James Dean lookalike, actalike in 1968. His name was also "Jim". Like Dizzy, I fell in love first, asked questions later or, like Dizzy, ignored those same questions and loved Jim in spite of his bisexuality. I met Jim's older silver fox gay lover too (whose birthday by chance was the same as mine). He needed this guy for the brakes or the security? Know just what she went through. My relationship ended just as suddenly and tragically when he slipped from my grasp and I could not be a part of his world.

Customer Reviews:
Classic, not Cheesy.......2006-11-22
I love this book. The jackets are updated classics, tailored and elegant without being cheap and cheesy looking. Super for the knitter wanting to create chic garments.
Classic patterns are refreshing but be cautious of errors.......2003-12-03
It's tough to find knitting patterns for sweaters with classic "jacket-like" lines. Vintage knitting patterns come close (e.g. the recent "Vintage Knits" book), but many vintage patterns were designed for much smaller sizes, say up to a size 34. The sweaters in the book are really beautiful, and the directions are for the most part clear, although not really meant for the beginning knitter. Most of the patterns are worked on small needles, so each sweater will take considerable time for the average busy person. There is a reference section at the back of the book which summarizes the various stitch patterns, which is helpful. However, there are numerous errors in the book that can result in disaster (I learned this the hard and painful way). XRX books is happy to send or email corrections (almost every sweater contains errors), and hopefully the changes will appear in subsequent editions to the book. I would recommend this book if you love the patterns, but would make sure that you call the company for corrections before starting a project.
Female lawyer plans to wear these to the office!.......2003-03-21
I'm thrilled with this book! I'm so sick of bulky sweaters I can only wear on the weekend. I can't wait to make several of these jackets, which with a shell and a skirt or pair of pants, will look terrific in the office. I have just taken up knitting again after 30 years, and I don't want to waste my time with mittens. I have already ordered the yarn for several jackets, and my daughter is complaining because her stuff was put on hold! Don't be intimidated by the ratings - like I said, I have taken up knitting again after 30 years, and the first jacket I am making is rated advanced. But there are no complicated charts to follow, everything is pretty straightforward. I am confident I can make any of these jackets - and I would rate my skills at intermediate. Although I found the colors used for the jackets in the photographs kind of boring (I'm a lawyer, I'm not dead!) you can easily jazz up some of the colors.
Basically, I was looking for a book that would allow me to recreate St. John's knits for the office. Putting a simple pull-up skirt with these jackets does it, I think. And I can get the colors I really want, and the price will be 1/10 the price of St. John!
Classy collection of sweaters for meetings or the office.......2003-03-15
While much of the fun of knitting is making colorful, comfortable clothing for relaxation, there are times when a knitter needs to look "presentable." "Jackets" is a terrific resource for any knitter who wants to look professional while enjoying the sense of accomplishment and individuality that a handknit garment can bring.
This book provides 21 patterns of office suitable cardigans and Channel style jackets, all of which would look as polished as a blazer or a suit jacket. The looks are sharp but traditional enough not to go out of style quickly. Each pattern runs 4 to 6 pages with several photo angles and detailed instructions. The end of the book features a section on finishing tips which is most appropriate given the tailored tone of most of the sweaters.
For those of you who can thumb through the book before ordering, here are some details that may be helpful:
1. Colorwise, there are 14 solid color jackets and 7 multicolor slip stitch patterns. The multi-colors are mostly tweedy looks. Most of the solid color sweaters are knit is stitches other that stockingnette - twills, nubby textures and such. There is only one lace project.
2. The writer/editors rate one sweater as easy; two as "easy plus"; fifteen as intermediate; and three as advanced.
3. The yarn weights are on the light side - one in sport weight; nine in DK weight; nine in worsted weight and two in bulky. Also, this book employees Knitter's Magazine's new generic yarn requirements system (with only small print notations of the specific yarn used in the model jacket).
4. The needles involved are also on the small side - four sweaters on US size 3; four on US size 4; two on US size 5; four on US size 6; six on US size 7; and one on US size 10. As one knitter who is getting pretty tired of the bulky look, this is one of the best part of the book IMHO.
In summary; a great book for professionals who've had to keep their knitting in the closet or the knitters who never know what to make to the young woman lawyer in the family.
I love it!.......2003-03-14
If you like classic styling with attention to detail, you'll like the designs in this book. These jackets can go to the office, to meetings, and out to dinner -- you'll look good anywhere.
The knitted fabrics that Jean creates in her designs are stunning. More importantly, the avid knitter will want to use her own creativity with texture and color to bring to these designs to make her own one-of-a-kind jacket.
These designs are not for anyone looking for a quick project on large needles. However, the stitches used lend themselves to the mesmerizing rhythm that soothes so many of us as we knit. And the time is well worth the effort.
My only problem is deciding which one to make first!
