Book Description

A collection of luscious oil paintings in tribute to pillowy female forms.

Subtitled "Additional Observations on the Beauty/Ugliness of Mostly Pillowy Girls," Underbelly is a hardcover art book featuring over 50 of Cooper's luminescent oil paintings and lush drawings, each focusing on the female form. Underbelly is the follow-up to Cooper's acclaimed first book of paintings, Overbite. Since the success (and immediate sell out) of Overbite, Cooper has been producing new work at a fevered pitch for gallery shows and patrons alike. Although much of the work in Underbelly appears to have slithered out of a similar same place as Overbite, this latest batch has a decidedly darker and more urban flavor.

Cooper's meticulous glazing method of oil painting lends an almost unsettling obsessiveness and depth to his subjects: primarily innocent, or vacant, or menacing, or predatory women wearing little or nothing, and writing around a variety of settings, all produced over the past two years for a number of gallery shows in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.

Before devoting himself mostly to painting over the last two years, Cooper created several acclaimed graphic novels, including Ripple, Suckle, Dan & Larry and others. He also contributed designs to the Matt Groening television series Futurama, and has collaborated with comedian David Cross and Vice magazine founder Gavin McInnes. 48 full-color pages, 10" x 10".

Dave Cooper's book Underbelly is a collection of drawings and paintings devoted to mostly one thing..women who have large overbites. Despite their ugliness, Cooper's women are oddly compelling and you can understand his affection for his little beastly creations. It's a very big book and well worth the price if you like Pop-Surrealism. If you are the kind of person who wants to date Janeane Garofalo (okay that wasn't fair)...you will love this delightful journey into Cooper's twisted world. I would love to see these women made into collectible figures.

      Book Description

O'Donoghue tells what happened when he entered the 1991 Iditarod, along with 17 sled dogs with names like Rainy, Harley and Screech. O'Donoghue braved snowstorms, sickening wipeouts, and endured the contempt of more experienced racers. Narrated with icy elan and self deprecating wit, this is a true story of heroism, cussedness, and astonishing dumb luck.

3 out of 5 stars No match for Paulsen.......2006-03-15

Every once in a while we go up to Ely, MN, and spend a day or so dogsledding. So, prior to this year's trip, I bought a few books on the Iditarod and mushing in general.

With the Iditarod in the news right now (especially with the legally blind woman competing this year) I figured I'd learn more about that particular grueling race. This was the first book I got, as the title caught my eye and the reviews were good.

About 1/3 the way into the book, the jumping around between the various mushers and their stories started to get annoying. While I was interested in the various stories, interspersing them in a sort of "time line" format along with O'Donoghue's own experiences was not something I, myself, particularly enjoyed. There were other things about his writing style that seemed to indicate the book was written for his associates and the people with whom he raced, rather than the public at large. As a reporter, it made sense that O'Donoghue would toss in some short human interest stories of the other mushers. But he also had a few nicknames and references that seemed to be for the benefit of those in the know.

Then I made the mistake of picking up Gary Paulsen's Winterdance before I had finished this one. What a huge difference!

I reluctantly came back to My Lead Dog Was A Lesbian and am still trying to finish it. After Paulsen, it just isn't the same. Not to mention his overuse of the word "lesbian" as an adjective, almost as if he felt it necessary to justify the title of the book. OK, the dog was "confused". We get that. But halfway through the book I started noticing he was referring to her as "the little lesbian" or "the lesbian" more often than anything else (like "my lead dog" or her name), and once that sort of thing is noticed, you know, it then just sort of jumps off the page at you. So it's gotten to the point where, when I read that description of his lead dog my eyes roll and I tend to flinch. Gahhh not another one!

I'm still stuck somewhere in the middle of the Iditarod with "O'D" and just can't quite bring myself to pick it back up. He doesn't convey anywhere near the appreciation or love of the dogs that Paulsen does, and it is, after all, all about the dogs. Or should be.

If you want objective, dry facts and figures, this is your book. If you want the soul of mushing, read Paulsen.

      5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2003-11-24

I thought the book was well written - I read at every opportunity, even my lunch time at work! I'm from South Africa, where winter day temperatures hover around 15 deg C (59 F) and I've seen snow maybe twice in my life, but this story was written in such a way that I'm burning to try mushing myself! Imagine that! I've ordered other books on mushing which, I'm hoping, will convince me that I shouldn't be so crazy.

Well worth the read and keep it on your bookshelf for future reading.

4 out of 5 stars a lot safer than taking on the iditarod yourself.......2002-04-22

This is far from the best-written non-fiction book I have ever read. The journalist's experience writing in the shorter form of articles shows through in the disjointed feel of much of the narrative. This is still well worth the read if you have any interest in Alaska, mushing, or man's working relationship with dogs. Even without those interests you may well find the book enjoyable.
At the beginning I was first overcome by the romantic notion of this amazing race, and reading through his preparations deluded myself with the fantasy of doing such a thing myself (a real joke considering how much I dislike even camping). Once the race gets underway, my most common thought was "these people are ...insane!" It was terrific and I really wanted to know how it would turn out for each and every one of them.
The title can provide for some fun too. The other day I overheard from another room Child A ask, "What is a lesbian?" Child B responded, "It is a type of dog." After much laughter I had to call them in and correct it, although I had fun imagining the kind of conversation this could cause in public at one point if they were both left with their misconception.
Since you are on this page, and reading these reviews, you are probably interested enough in the subject that reading this book would be a positive experience for you.

4 out of 5 stars I'll Just Read About It, Thanks........2002-02-07

Of the Iditarod books I've read this has to rank as one of the best. Apparently a good sense of humor and a high appreciation of irony is a necessary component of being a Musher.

4 out of 5 stars And I thought rock climbers were a bit off the scale............2002-01-31

A dynamite read even for someone who has never lived north of Key West, who has never even heard of the Iditarod, and who hates dogs. Adds credence to the fact that I never read fiction..life is a lot stranger, and a lot more exciting

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!.......2003-06-03

Great information presented in an entertaining manner. All about black films -- it answered questions I didn't even know I had.

      4 out of 5 stars A Real Conversation Starter.......2002-01-14

This is a great idea for a book. With roughly a century of black film history, it's about time that somebody documented it in terms of quality and relative importance.

The book starts with a discussion of the Jack Johnson vs. Jim Jeffries heavyweight fight film. The U.S. Congress was apparently so threatened by the sight of Johnson beating up a white man, that they banned all film fights from interstate distribution.

This sets the stage so to speak of the book's discussion of fifty films which it deems important. Rather than rank them numerically, the book groups the films by decade (except for silent films which are grouped together). It begins with THE RAILROAD PORTER (1912) and ends with THE BEST MAN (1999). Also included is a special section on influential independent films.

Invariably in a book like this, there will be disagreement about the selection of films (for example, only three films from the 1950s are included as opposed to a whopping eleven in the 1990s). However, for every time that you scratch your head wondering why a certain film was included (or excluded), there'll be another film that you'll totally agree with the selection. This is the real fun of the book.

This book gives the black film fan ample fuel to promote discussions for hours about the merits of a particular film. Also included are interviews with key participants in several of the films. Some are very informative, some are down right amusing. One in particular is director Euzhan Palcy's interview regarding the making of A DRY WHITE SEASON. In it she talks about working with Marlon Brando (who received an Oscar nomination for his performance). You might be quite surprised by what she says about him.

Because it covers partically the entire span of film history, it's a great introduction for those who know little of black film prior to the 1970s. A wide variety of genres are covered from musicals to historical dramas. The book also provides a mix of commercial films and little seen independent ones. For most people, the book will remind you of some films and make you aware of new ones.

At just 312 pages, the book is a quick read. Unless you're a film scholar, you're bound to discover a wealth of information about a number of films. For the serious film buff, the entries might be too brief.

However, the regular movie goer should be right at home with this book. You'll find it written in plain English, free of technical jargon. If you have a party and things are getting a bit dull, put this book on the coffee table and see if things suddenly perk up.

The only way to find out is to get the book.

        5 out of 5 stars A delightful surprise.......2005-07-21

I actually met J.A.C. Redford before I knew that he did music for movies. Even then, I didn't think much of it, until I chanced to look up his profile on [...]. I was floored by the great music he'd done, and the famous movies he'd worked on.

Last week, I did some temp work in the office of my church, and they had a few copies of the book laying around. I'd always wanted to read it, so in between answering phone calls, I did. It was elegant, but simple and easily accessible to most readers. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes.......2002-01-29

I say "ditto" to the previous reviews. It is a behind the scenes look at leaving the Mormon religion and the life of an artist. But I was overwhelmed at the thought that I had heard this man's music in so many TV shows and movies and had known nothing about him. It is thrilling to me to know that there are people like him behind the scenes in Hollywood-- quietly making a difference, and doing so with excellence.

        4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2001-10-04

This book is great. It is a story of a man and his family who leave the LDS religion after generations of his family being in it. It takes you through many hardships in his life and most importantly, finding God's grace. Most people do not understand how hard it is to leave the Mormon church, and he has explained it all so well It is also hard for a lot of people to understand the Mormon religion, I think this book does an awsome job without offending anyone. Being a Christian married to a Mormon, I found it very interesting. I even read it to my husband and I think it opened a lot of doors. I think any Christian who has contact with mormons should read this book, It explains a lot and helps to understand what they beleive and why. I have owned this book for about three months and it has been read four or five times by different people, and they all have liked it. The end moves a little slow, but overall an AWSOME book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Read For A Long Time.......1998-03-05

I bought this book on a whim and wasn't sure that I would like it until I started to read it. I identified with Redford from the first page. I read the entire book in two days even though I had to go to work and finish writing an essay. Redford is as good of an author as he is a composer. Some of the paragraphs are marvelously beautiful. My favorite passage is on page 174: "In the wake of the chisel, there emerged the features of a deeper truth, resonating with the music and literature that had been speaking to me sense my childhood. . . . It was there in my grandmother's hamburgers and in the soaring beauth of her voice, interweaving with my mother's as they sang "Homing." It was there in the pages of Tolkein and C.S. Lewis, in the poetry of ee cummings and Geranld Manley Hopkins. It was there at the heart of Christmas. . . . It bade me welcome in "Five Mystical Songs" and asked, "Know ye not who bore the blame?" And suddenly, Christ the tiger broke upon us in a riot of color and flame and seized us in his magnificent jaws." This book, along with "Can Man Live Without God" by Ravi Zacharias, goes down as the best I've read in a year.

There are very few bad things about this guide. The directions are helpful, concise, and make gameplay much easier, but more fun, too. The pictures are small, but they have great detail, so they help more than hinder. Also, the minigames section is REALLY helpful! This is what helped me through most of the game. If you have this game, trust me, YOU NEED THIS STRATEGY GUIDE!!! It's a big help...

I found the guide very useful during gameplay and even if you don't follow it step-by-step, the maps and list of all the Dragon Eggs and Light Gems help tremendously. Well worth the money if you're having trouble with finding items in the game. Also, it helped me know how to defeat the rock monsters. I got SO stuck there and I figured it out right away from the guide. Very easy to used and I was pleased with the way it was written. Great job, Prima!

Since when did finding Spyro items get easier? More items, more methods, new techniques. Help the little dragon out; don't wander around and have to go back. Follow the guide. Could have a little bit more pics, be a little more descriptive. I did get stuck in one place because directions confused me.

Here's another management parable that draws its lesson from an unlikely source--this time it's the fun-loving fishmongers at Seattle's Pike Place Market. In Fish! the heroine, Mary Jane Ramirez, recently widowed and mother of two, is asked to engineer a turnaround of her company's troubled operations department, a group that authors Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen describe as a "toxic energy dump." Most reasonable heads would cut their losses and move on. Why bother with this bunch of losers? But the authors don't make it so easy for Mary Jane. Instead, she's left to sort out this mess with the help of head fishmonger Lonnie. Based on a bestselling corporate education video, Fish! aims to help employees find their way to a fun and happy workplace. While some may find the story line and prescriptions--such as "Choose Your Attitude," "Make Their Day," and "Be Present"--downright corny, others will find a good dose of worthwhile motivational management techniques. If you loved Who Moved My Cheese? then you'll find much to like here. And don't worry about Mary Jane and kids. Fish! has a happy ending for everyone. --Harry C. Edwards
