Book Description
The works presented--from the prehistoric Venus of Willendorf to Michelangelo's Piet, to paintings by such artists as Picasso and lisabeth Vige-Lebrun, to Hannah Wilke's searing self-portraits of her cancer-ridden body, to photographic records of visceral performance pieces by Carolee Schneeman--are, by turn, beautiful, subtle, explicit, confrontational, and sometimes shocking. These images provoke a wide-ranging, spirited dialogue between the authors as they discuss the various ways women have been portrayed-as goddess, mother, victim, martyr, whore, seductress, and more-resulting in a book full of startling visual illumination that combines a vivid discourse on the female image with a triumphant celebration of the feminine. 200 color illustrations.

History and Art Through The Eyes of a Feminist.......2005-04-14
Judy Chicago, feminist and more importantly, artist, colaborates a book with author and art critic, Edward Lucie Smith (Symbolist Art), on the history of women artist and women in art.
In a world like today, one might not understand the detest Degas had for women in some of his works (women bathing) which were to be women in humiliating situations. Or some of Picasso's pieces, (unless you know his history with women).
These and other "masterpieces" are applauded for their medium, composition, color, while the underlining message seems to get absorbed innocently into our society. Judy Chicago brutally points these out and makes us face perhaps how art could have had played a negative part in women in society throughout history.
I've enjoyed reading about the different feminist art that was happening at the age I was jumping rope. To have been a part of this would have been revolutionary. I thank all the women who've used their artisitc abilities to express the injustices women have been (and are currently) faced with.
I did, however, need to remove the jacket cover from this book. I'm not sure it this was meant to be ironic, but it deffinately sparked the curiousity of my ten year old son...
A comprehensive, fascinating, informative study........2000-05-04
Judy Chicago and Edward Lucie-Smith's Women In Art considers why so much art by women finds so little public recognition. From images chosen by female artists to how men portray and perceive women's works, this provides an important study by an artist and art historian who select and analyze images of women by both male and female artists from throughout Western art history.
Book Description
Hagia Sophia, the Church of Holy Wisdom, sits majestically atop the plateau that commands the straits separating Europe and Asia. Located near the acropolis of the ancient city of Byzantium, this unparalleled structure has enjoyed an extensive and colorful history, as it has successively been transformed into a cathedral, mosque, monument, and museum. In Hagia Sophia, 1850-1950, Robert S. Nelson explores its many lives.
Built from 532 to 537 as the Cathedral of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia was little studied and seldom recognized as a great monument of world art until the nineteenth century, and Nelson examines the causes and consequences of the building's newly elevated status during that time. He chronicles the grand dome's modern history through a vibrant cast of characters—emperors, sultans, critics, poets, archaeologists, architects, philanthropists, and religious congregations—some of whom spent years studying it, others never visiting the building. But as Nelson shows, they all had a hand in the recreation of Hagia Sophia as a modern architectural icon. By many means and for its own purposes, the West has conceptually transformed Hagia Sophia into the international symbol that it is today.
While other books have covered the architectural history of the structure, this is the first study to address its status as a modern monument. With his narrative of the building's rebirth, Nelson captures its importance for the diverse communities that shape and find meaning in Hagia Sophia. His book will resonate with cultural, architectural, and art historians as well as with those seeking to acquaint themselves with the modern life of an inspired and inspiring building.

A close reading.......2005-11-01
My one criticism of this book - reprinters take note! - is that it does not have a separate bibliography, only endnotes. This, in a book of 250-odd pages of scholarly writing, is completely irritating. But overall it has a wide appeal, in my opinion - I am interested in the history of photography, and his chapter 4 "Making a Picturesque Monument" has one of the most perceptive analyses I've read on the role of photographs in shaping views of a building and a place into a canonical view.

Book Description
Winner of the Runciman Award for 1989. Justinian's great church in Constantinople was the culminating architectural achievement of late antiquity and the first great masterpiece of the Byzantine world. For over 900 years it was Christendom's grandest place of worship and, for most of this time, the seat of the Orthodox patriarch and a principal setting for imperial ceremonies. After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, it was for almost 500 years one of the principal mosques of Istanbul. Its influence, both architecturally and liturgically, was widespread and enduring. Drawing on the work of Robert Van Nice for Dumbarton Oaks as well as on his own detailed observations and critical reading of the historical material, Rowland Mainstone's authoritative account of the church presents the genesis and development of its design and construction, the subsequent changes, and its character and influence. His evocative descriptions, complemented by specially prepared plans and drawings and superb photographs, provide a unique record of an unprecedentedly ambitious project. 305 illustrations.

Almost a top-notch book.......2004-10-25
This is one of the most thorough books about the Hagia Sophia church ever printed. However, it lacked a few important things. First, it would be better as a hardcover. Second, it could have used some 3d renderings of what Justinian's church looked like before the Ottoman conquest. Finally, ALL the pictures are in BLACK AND WHITE! Still a good buy, but do your best to get it at a deal.
Excellent text, fine illustrations, but bad binding.......2001-03-13
Exaustively researched, excruciatingly detailed, and competently illustrated, this is still the best book I know on the subject, although an update to include color illustrations would much improve it. However, the paperback binding is sadly inadequate--my copy fell apart when I opened it...

a must for ecclesial, historical and architectural buffs........1998-10-23
A bit technical at times but very interesting overall. Excellent photos and elevations. Plus shows how the Church was originally appointed for Orthodox/Catholic Christian sacred use. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Book Description
The church of Hagia Sophia in Trebizond, built by the emperor Manuel I Grand Komnenos (1238-63) in the aftermath of the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade, is the finest surviving Byzantine imperial monument of its period. Art and Identity in Thirteenth-Century Byzantium is the first investigation of the church in more than thirty years, and is extensively illustrated in colour and black-and-white, with many images that have never previously been published.
Antony Eastmond examines the architectural, sculptural and painted decorations of the church, placing them in the context of contemporary developments elsewhere in the Byzantine world, in Seljuq Anatolia and among the Caucasian neighbours of Trebizond. Knowledge of this area has been transformed in the last twenty years, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The new evidence that has emerged enables a radically different interpretation of the church to be reached, and raises questions of cultural interchange on the borders of the Christian and Muslim worlds of eastern Anatolia, the Caucasus and Persia.
This study uses the church and its decoration to examine questions of Byzantine identity and imperial ideology in the thirteenth century. This is central to any understanding of the period, as the fall of Constantinople in 1204 divided the Byzantine empire and forced the successor states in Nicaea, Epiros and Trebizond to redefine their concepts of empire in exile. Art is here exploited as significant historical evidence for the nature of imperial power in a contested empire. It is suggested that imperial identity was determined as much by craftsmen and expectations of imperial power as by the emperor's decree; and that this was a credible alternative Byzantine identity to that developed in the empire of Nicaea.

I love Three Dog Bakery.......2007-07-03
I love what these guys have done with the dog treat industry. This book had more of a story to it rather than just recipes.
Canine Cuisine.......2005-09-08
I saw a show on Food Network about the Three Dog Bakery and found out about their cookbook. I have 4 dogs, a sheltie, a toy pomeranian, a st.bernard/retriever mix, and a "heinz 57", they all love it when I spend the day in the kitchen cooking. My favorite form of relaxation !! There is an invisible line they do not cross between the dining room and the kitchen, so all 4 will sit at the line and wait for a treat... they don't really understand but now they get a lot more treats than before and it only took a couple of times with the new "doggie treat" jar for them to all sit, with tails wagging and tongues hanging out waiting for the dog friendly and healthy treats... The treats are easy to make, most of the ingredients are readily available in my kitchen and they store well... I collect cookbooks and this one has moved to a prominent place on the shelf...
Interesting only if you want to start a similar firm.......2004-12-21
This book is mostly an entrepreneurial autobiograhy, interesting only if you want to start a similar firm or know the owners personally. The writing style is annoyingly self-congratulatory. There are only a handful of recipes. If you have a bit of baking skill, you can easily come up with better ones on your own. My dog and I received this book as a gift along with some treats from the Three Dog Bakery. The treats were great; the book is not. I wouldn't recommend it as a gift.
Great entrepreneurial yarn.......2003-10-25
Like everyone else, I loved the story of this family, men and dogs, and how they came to build their business. It was a true American entrepreneurial tale, and I'm glad they've had success. The descriptions of the dogs were also compelling.
I have to admit, though, that I've tied several of the recipes, and my dog never cared much for the results. The ginger snaps in particular seemed inedible to him. I've made many other dog biscuits for him using recipes from other places and out of the newspaper that sent him over the moon.
If you don't plan to use the recipes, I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful story and well written.
What an inspirational story!.......2003-07-17
I really liked this book and have read it twice. Some parts of it were humorous. In short, I recommend this book to all dog lovers and owners!
Book Description
For some of us, moviegoing is an occasional pleasure. Kevin Murphy made it his obsession, and he did it for you.
Mr. Murphy, known to legions of fans as Tom Servo on the legendary TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000, went to the movies every day for a year. That's every single day, people. For a whole fricken' year. And not only did he endure, he prevailed -- for this is the hilarious, poignant, fascinating journal of his adventures: the first book about the movies from the audience's point of view.
Kevin went to the multiplex, sure. But he didn't stop there. He found the world's smallest commercial movie theater. Another one made completely of ice. Checked out flicks in a tin-roofed hut in the South Pacific. Tooled across the desert from drive-in to drive-in in a groovy convertible. Lived for a week solely on theater food. Took six different women to the same date movie. Dressed up as a nun for the Sing-Along Sound of Music in London. Sneaked into the Cannes and Sundance film festivals. Smuggled an entire Thanksgiving dinner into a movie theater. And saw hundreds of films, from the Arctic Circle to the Equator, from the sublime to the unspeakable. Come along on a joyous global celebration of the cinema with a man on a mission -- to spend A Year at the Movies.
Customer Reviews:
Well-written and funny.......2006-01-02
Kevin Murphy, the heart and soul of MST3K as Tom Servo, writes with passion about movies. He makes a pact to see a movie a day for an entire year. He travels the world to see films, too, going to Australia and to the Cannes Film Festival. The fact that he sat through "Freddy Got Fingered" and "Joe Dirt" in the same week is reason enough for me to give the man props.
Not all jokes, and suprisingly intelligent.......2005-11-16
Unlike the books written by Michael Nelson, this former MST3K writter's offering is more art than humor. He uses the seemingly silly stunt of seeing a movie eery day for a year as a way of talking about film in general. He shows us how theatre goers reflect society in genral, and how much the rise of megaplexes has taken away something of the specialness of seeing films.
There are moments in this book where Kevin relats painful, personal stories about his exploits, and other moments when he uses this book as a pulpit to preach to us about our behavior as fans. At other moments, this becomes an interesting slice of history, chronicling what films were out in 2001, and which ones we should try and forget from that year.
Bravo! to the Manifesto from the Man who was Tom Servo!.......2005-09-13
Writer and performer of the rotund, ruddy robot Tom Servo on "Mystery Science Theatre 3000", Kevin Murphy spent 2001 travelling the globe, vowing to take in a movie a day, every day in some of the best- and worst- circumstances imaginable. Murphy doesn't so much review the films, but the experience: picture and sound and the film's quality are important to him, but so's the food and drink available, the company he keeps, the atmoshere and decor of the theatre, the service the staff provide and the behaviour of his fellow movie-goers.
Whether sitting through yet another miserable in-flight movie, smuggling Thanksgiving dinner into his nephew's first trip to the multiplex or schmoozing at the Cannes and Sundance festivals, Murphy is never less than passionate about cinema and committed to his mission. Even his health is at stake: pre-empting Morgan Spurlock by a wide margin, he vows to live on nothing but concession-stand food for a week!
The nicest surprise about the book is how different Murphy's authorial voice is from his colleague Michael J Nelson. Working cheek-by-jowl on MST3K for a decade, and obviously sharing the same sense of humour, I'd feared Murphy's book would come off a pale copy of Nelson's "Movie Megacheese" or "Mind Over Matters". In fact, Murphy is less wry and far saltier, subversive and overtly political than Nelson. The book is part travelogue, part journal, but mostly it's a manifesto, written by a man with clear ideas on how great the experience of cinema can be, and no doubt about who's spoling it.
It's often laugh-out-loud funny, as you'd expect (Murphy's description of time spent in a darkened theatre, being groped and sat on by passing patrons is hilarious), but also touching. Murphy was far from home and alone on September the 11th. His thoughts on the role movies can play in times of grief are powerful. Later, he wonders if there's still such a thing as a "date movie" in the 21st century. His efforts might leave him despairing of Hollywood, but reaffirm his love for his wife.
Highly recommended for anyone who believes that in this age of dvd, pay-per-view and broadband piracy, the best place to see movies remains the big-screen, popcorn in hand.
A book for any cinemaphile.......2005-03-14
First off as I always do in my reviews the people this book is not for: Anyone who is looking for reviews from a years worth of movies. anyone who does not understand the transformation that cinema has undergone over the years and lastly those who are not interested in the movie going experience.
Now that those people are out of the way on with the review.
This is a great book that any fan of movies should read. This book really goes through all sorts of differant experiances in a person can undergo in the movie theatre. this includes everything from where to sit where to go. and all points in between. From the Googleplexs that are the cancer of the cinema experiance to the discount cinemas that can bring more joy that one can know. This book goes through then all.
I always feel the need to rebut some of the low reviews I read on amazon and let me begin by saying that yes Kevin does go through a lot about what is bad in the cinima today and it does seem like a lot of repetitve sayings. But that is not all he offers. He also offers some solutions and answers that can help in reaturing movies and the cinema experiance to their former glory. This is a book that you must read if you are not a slave to the masses and want to be set free to see a movie in a comfortable and enjoyable way for very little money.
I cannot say enough good things about this book and plead that every one of you that read this review get this book so that you can understand what the big deal is all about.
Entertaining, thought provoking, but, maybe, unexpected.......2005-03-03
Based on Kevin's work with MST3K, some people would expect this to be a book of movie reviews, in which he would apply his sarcastic wit to tear apart a bad movie every day for a year. A few were evidently disappointed because the book is something different. It's a series of essays on the moviegoing experience in various locales. But it's very, very entertaining. He does go in for numerous sideswipes on certain films and actors (ex- Saturday Night Live performers get a special dose of his vitriol) and can be hilarious. He covers a broad range of topics and makes his various encounters very human. The sections on being far from home on 9/11 and playing Santa, for example are very touching.
Some of the posters here complain that Kevin is a bit of a movie snob. They don't point out that he doesn't spare himself and explores the inherent contradictions of being a movie snob and a movie fan. In the end, his love for the medium does come across, despite his continual frustations with the industry. You won't always agree with him (he takes a jab at my beloved progressive rock, for example, I don't see the virtues of continually watching downbeat documentaries). But, he'll make you think, and he'll make you laugh, all done in a very well written, informative, and accessible style. Well worth the time.

wordy book on billiards.......2007-08-23
I just wanted a basic book on billiards and billard etiquette. This book is too big and wordy. I guess it is a good book if you are considering purchasing a billiard table, as it goes into great detail about what to look for, etc. I wanted just a basic book.
Good.......2007-03-03
Its good when your starting in to the pool. if not you may find only a 1/3 of the book use full.
great addition to any library of a pool player.......2007-02-02
I found this book very well written with good detail and explainations. When words were difficult, excellent pictures helped make things clear. I played pool for years but was unable to play for a long time. I bought the book as a refresher and was very impressed. It has helped me a lot to get back on track with my game. Any serious pool player who wants help with their game can benefit from this book. New players as well as old.
Great for a beginner.......2006-11-05
I am just learning about pool, and I found this book to be just what I needed. She clearly exlains each issue, mostly in a very good order for learning them. My friends can't believe how quickly I have improved. Now I have to decide if I want to share the book with them or just start beating them.
Readable, Informative, A Great Start.......2006-03-11
I'm new to the game so I can't critically review every bit of advice in this boook. However, I have a STACK of new books on pool and this is the only one that one can actually read from cover to cover. All of Ms. Laurence's advice has been sound so far, and my game is moving along. Moving along very nicely, in fact, after some fumbling before I got this book. Perfect for beginners. She gets into some pretty advanced theory and practice, not just newbiw stuff -- but if she ever writes a book with "Advanced" in the title, I fully intend to buy it ASAP. I do wish there was a way to take a book to the pool hall without looking like a fool: this would be the one.
Book Description
You're no idiot, of course. You know that "English" isn't just the name of a language, it's also the type of spin you use to control the cue ball in pool. But when it comes to racking them up, making a break shot, and sinking balls in the corner pocket, you feel like "English" is your second language. Don't hang up your cue stick yet! In her comprehensive book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Pool & Billiards, Ewa Mataya Laurance--one of the world,s most accomplished and mesmerizing players--gives you:
Customer Reviews:
Not just for beginners!.......2006-01-14
I've read several reviews here stating that this book is only good for beginners. I've been playing for years, and I don't think I know all there is to know on the subject.
I finally bought a table, and after dropping a considerable chunck of change on that I became interested in learning more about the game as having a table gives one a good oportunity to improve.
I found this book and at first glance I thought that it would probably just serve those just beginning, wrong. There is a lot of useful info in these pages. Everything from making all kinds of shots, several differnent ways to shoot a bank shot, caring for your home table, cue, among other things.
These "Idiot's Guide" books cover a great deal of subject matter without a lot of stuff just to fill up pages.
Some authors on billiards will mention a technique, only to say that they think it's not a very good way to do it, but then only give you their recommendation, which may not work for you. This book lays several techniques out there and lets you decide. I saw the ones I've used over the years, but some that I didn't know about. Doesn't mean that what I was doing was wrong, there are just other ways to do the same thing.
Example; I had always played banks by feel, and after a lot of years made them most of the time. This book shows a few ways to aim at the pocket which I didn't know about. I still play by feel, but it's interesting to know what others are may be thinking when they do it.
This is the best book ever for a beginner!!.......2004-08-24
Five years ago I was that beginner. I studied this book as though I were taking a college course. Two years ago I bought my own pool table. Sorry Ewa, not a Brunswick. Now that I'm ready for them, I have just ordered 3 books by Robert Byrne's. I also have a pool mentor/friend who teaches me and loans me pool videos.
April 4, 2007 - Our "Olhausen" pool table was the only piece of furniture that survived Hurricane Katrina. We didn't even have to recover it.
Best So Far.......2002-09-17
I've read quite a few books on pool and billiards, and this one is the best so far. I find myself returning to it for reference quite often, even though I've read several books since this one.
It does get a little wordy in places but it's an easy read and full of interesting facts. Although geared toward beginner to intermediate, I believe this book would be helpful and entertaining for anyone interested in pool or billiards...at any skill level. (I've been playing over 30 years.)
A Wonderful Book.......2002-09-16
This book covers everything from history to buying a table, from the kick shot to the masse shot. It includes lists of players and their awards, resources, trick shots, and lots of other useful stuff, plus funny or amazing stories. I must have read it 10 times, and I'm still not tired of it.
