Book Description

“They met in ordinary ways,” writes Rachel Cohen in her introduction, “a careful arrangement after long admiration, a friend’s casual introduction, or because they both just happened to be standing near the drinks. . . . They talked to each other for a few hours or for forty years, and later it seemed to them impossible that they could have missed each other.”

Each chapter of this inventive consideration of American culture evokes an actual meeting between two historical figures. In 1854, Henry James, as a boy, goes with his father to have a daguerreotype made by Mathew Brady and is captured in a moment of self-consciousness about being American. Brady returns to photograph Walt Whitman and, later, at City Point in the midst of the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant. Meanwhile, Henry James begins a lasting friendship with William Dean Howells, and also meets Sarah Orne Jewett, who in turn is a mentor to Willa Cather. Mark Twain publishes Grant’s memoirs; W.E.B. Du Bois and his professor William James visit the young Helen Keller; and Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz argue about photography. Later, Carl Van Vechten and Gertrude Stein, who was also a student of William James’s, attend a performance of The Rite of Spring; Hart Crane goes out on the town with Charlie Chaplin; Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston write a play together; Elizabeth Bishop takes Marianne Moore, who was photographed by both Van Vechten and Richard Avedon, to the circus; Avedon and James Baldwin collaborate on a book; John Cage and Marcel Duchamp play chess; and Norman Mailer and Robert Lowell march on the Pentagon in the anti–Vietnam War demonstration of 1967. The accumulation of these pairings draws the reader into the mysterious process through which creativity has been sparked and passed on among iconoclastic American writers and artists.

Ultimately, Rachel Cohen reveals a long chain of friendship, rebellion, and influence stretching from the moment just before the Civil War through a century that had a profound effect on our own time. Drawing on a decade of research, A Chance Meeting makes its own illuminating contribution to the tradition of which Cohen writes.

5 out of 5 stars A SUCCESSFUL VENTURE IN HISTORICAL IMAGINING.......2005-11-12

Rachel Cohen's A Chance Meeting: Intertwined Lives of American Writers and Artists 1854-1967 is an exceptional work of literary detection and interpretation. In thirty-six chapters, Cohen narrates a set of encounters of distinguished American literati and artists across the span of 113 years, laying out changes in the preoccupations and sensibilities of American writers and artists in the century that followed the Civil War. Some meetings are brief, even one-time, and peripheral to the protagonists' lives as, for instance, the Henry James, still a child, sitting with his father for a photograph by Matthew Brady, or William Dean Howells' one-time meeting with Walt Whitman, or Richard Avedon's photo shoot of modernists Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Robert Rauschenberg. The meeting of James and Brady is also a "might have been" meeting, for Cohen takes a daring chance to capture and describe James's literary and intellectual sensibility on the brink of radical change. Other chapters describe longer standing relationships -Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant, Edward Steichen and Alfred Steiglitz, Joseph Cornell and Marianne Moore, Hart Crane's disastrous stay in Mexico with Katherine Anne Porter, the complicated father and son relationship of W. E. B. Du Bois and Langston Hughes, the advance-retreat relationship between Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston.

This is not a book of strict factual history (although nothing in it runs counter to what can be proved using historical methods) but rather a book of rich historical sensitivity that illuminates a critical period in the maturing of our country's literature and art. It is written with exceptional grace: each chapter can be read separately without loss in pleasure or comprehension. This is a bold venture that deserves a wide readership.

The reader who enjoys A Chance Meeting may also enjoy Louis Menand's The Metaphysical Club: A History of Ideas in America (which I am reading right now).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book About Artists in America.......2004-06-24

This is a collection of essays about the private lives of important American authors and artists. Cohen's essays are based almost entirely on secondary works and begin with 19th Century authors and artists and then continue on through the 20th Century.
These essays are written in such a way that you get a feel for the kind of folks that these artistic types actually were. The reader learns all sorts of interesting things about these people such as their vices, lusts and secret desires.

This is an excellent book about the history of artistic endeavor in America.

Rachel Cohen has created a diversion in A CHANCE MEETING: INTERTWINED LIVES OF AMERICAN ARTISTS, 1854 - 1967 that is more a series of illuminated daydreams than it is a sourcebook for biographical data on the important artists in American over a century spanning 1860s through 1960s. No, this is not a code of secretive encounters between unlikely and disparate writers, photograpahers, and artists, nor is it a professed series of inside stories meant to reveal the truths about those we deem as gifted. Cohen writes splendidly, and though she documents with copious bibliography and chapter notes the instances she encountered in her survey of 'chance meetings ' by a diversity of disparate artists, she seems more intent on using fact as springboard to create cadenzas of intricately woven possibilities to stimulate the reader to enter the wonderful world of 'what if?' than in declaring new-found discoveries of data/gossip.

Here in short and terse chapters we meet Matthew Brady, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Marcel Duchamp, Langston Hughes, Hart Crane, Mark Twain, Willa Cather, Alfred Steiglitz with and without Georgia O'Keefe, Charlie Chaplin, Richard Avedon, Gertrude Stein with and without Alice B. Toklas, etc., etc. - you get the picture. The joy of Cohen's writing is the possibilities created by perseverating on the conversations that might have occurred among these people, whether in duet or in orchestrated outcome. My bet is that if the casts of characters here discussed were to read these informative and provocative pages, they doubtless would smile, swoon, curse, or laugh, but in some way react to the vision and imagination of Rachel Cohen. This is a delightful book for devout readers and lovers of artistic history. There is so much to learn about artists who even today are on the periphery as well as the giants we all 'think' we know! This wonderful book is for relaxation and diversion and the rewards are many.

A CHANCE MEETING, divided into into 36 short chapters, contains stories of the relationships between noted writers and artists from just before the Civil War to the late 1960s. Most of the chapters are framed around a single meeting, but contain digressions which sometimes encompass other famous figures.
What are we to make of this unique, celebratory, and quite often infuriating work? Each chapter is backed up by Rachel Cohen's source notes, detailing the basis for the events and behavior described. Yet, throughout the book there's a curiously speculative tone, Cohen describes many of her beloved figures as "maybe" doing or thinking this or that. In the opening chapter, Henry James (then a young boy) is described as feeling a "persistent uneasiness" while eating ice cream after having his portrait taken by Matthew Brady. Cohen notes this episode is invented, but then one must ask, "Why is this important?" Surely a book very much like this could have been written without such flights of fancy?

Indeed, several chapters fail to coalesce at all. In a chapter on Willa Cather and Sarah Orne Jewett, Cohen asserts that the fact Cather did NOT meet Henry James changed the artistic direction of her career. How can this be proven? In most of these vignettes, no direct suggestion is made of how the characters influenced each other. Cohen is edging away from history and criticism and dangerously close to short fiction here. The book picks up in the last third, with some gossipy stuff about Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Bishop and a funny scene of Marianne Moore and Muhammad Ali together, but the whole thing is much too ephemeral. The photographer Richard Avedon provided several photos - he's thanked in the acknowledgements - but did he deserve to be included in the title of several chapters? It's not as if the people he photographed (Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten, for example) hadn't met before.
A suggestion: read some of the books Cohen sites in her bibliography instead of A CHANCE MEETING.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort Reading.......2004-04-19

What an exhilierating experience! I savored these 36 essays over a few weeks, reading only a handful a night before I went to bed. The book is just beautiful; there is no other word to describe the writing, tone, and voice of Rachel Cohen's book.

5 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

The days are definitely packed with adventures for this dynamic, but very short duo. From spaceships and interplanetary hideous monster beasties, to creeping around the backyard and generally getting up to suburban kidlet nogoodness, the fun is never in short supply. Neither is the wit, even if delivered under thread of Spaceman Spiff's raygun.

5 out of 5 stars Vocabulary promotion in disguise #1.......2005-08-03

Our boys love the C&H cartoons. They are expanding their vocabularies without even knowing it! I refrain from telling them this though because they usually shy away from "educational" books.

5 out of 5 stars Calvin The Great.......2003-11-21

Another great slab paperback filled with the very best of this over active duo. Themed for the holidays, Calvin and Hobbes get up to their usual mischief at the detriment of Mom, Dad, Susie and others. Read it over and over again just to get a little laughter in a boring day. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Don't you wish everyday was summer?.......2003-10-31

Fans of Calvin & Hobbes who used to read the newspaper strip in the 80s and 90s will find great pleasure in reading this collection of C&H comics. These witty comics about the 6-year old Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes, named after the famous philosophers, will amuse people of all ages. The perceptiveness and humor of Watterson deserve the highest of cartoon awards, while his artistic creations exude hilarity. This cartoon is perhaps one of the most piercing yet funny critiques of modern society.

Summer is the time when Calvin and Hobbes can hang out in the treehouse and plot their next attacks on Susie, if they're not busy fighting with each other, that is. This book also contains some of Calvin's best snowman art. Procrastinators will love Calvin's newest invention - the Time Machine, or perhaps not? This is definitely one of the best C&H books around.

Note that there are two series of C&H collections: individual wide-format albums, each covering an entire year of strips (will call it "regular"), and the vertical aspect ratio "treasury series" which covers selected comics from two regular C&H books. Note that C&H ran for a year in newspapers, so there's 10 regular books and 5 treasury books. Though the cartoons are slightly smaller in the treasury collection, each treasury book is far thicker and contains more strips than a regular book, and is furthermore less expensive, so treasury books are a real bargain. "The Days Are Just Packed" belongs to the regular series and was published in 1993.

5 out of 5 stars Calling Spaceman Spiff.......2003-08-31

There is little you can say about a Calvin and Hobbes book. As with the other books in this series, it is very funny, insightful of people and children, and something that I seem to be able to read over and over. Bill Waterson brings a perspective on humans that is as unique as Gary Larson's perspectives, only his viewpoint surrounds our "hero," Calvin. The long-suffering Hobbes (a tiger, don't you know) is often a voice of doubt and sanity that Calvin rarely, if ever, heeds. When Calvin realizes that Hobbes is being critical, a fight generally ensues. Given that Hobbes is a "ferocious" tiger, Calvin rarely gains the upper hand.

This book is excellent and relatively benign humor, good for any occasion when you need a break from the world. More amazing, this book can be read over and over, and each time you'll still find it funny. I strongly recommend this book.

Read this book! But don't read it like one of those predictable, ho-hum, chapter-by-chapter, plot-thickening numbers. Read it savoring the taste of each little section of comedic brilliance. Read it out loud sitting around the kitchen table. Read it knowing you're going to have to read this baby again and again until D.W. Martin publishes his next masterpiece.
This book is so funny, it will improve your sense of humor by up to fifty points!! Do you know what St. Augustine heard that brought about his great conversion? He heard the voice of a little child saying "take up and read."
So do what a great saint did and take up and read Officespeak!
(Note: Augustine didn't have Officespeak yet, but I'm guessing Officespeak will probably become as famous as the 'good book' that he ended up using.)
BUY IT! READ IT! LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Good gift idea for a co-worker.......2005-06-10

I was looking for a good gift for a co-worker I don't know too well, started thumbing through this, and ended up buying two -- one for the co-worker, and one for me. I get wary of humor books, but this one was dead-on hilarious. The section on the "history of the office" alone is worth the price of the book.

        5 out of 5 stars Hysterical!.......2005-05-07

I was reading this on the bus and I laughed so hard people started staring. This is the perfect graduation present for college students heading out into the "real" world!

4 out of 5 stars Like the office, only better........2005-04-21

I don't know why I like reading books about work life so much, but this one
was very articulate in its analysis of the air i breathe everyday, 9 to 5.
I wish i was swimming in a different pond, but for now its nice to have the parks and rec guide to the one I am in. Good book to keep around the office.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! And, embarrassing how true the stuff really is.........2005-04-21

It's embarrassing how dead on all the stuff on this book is! It made me cringe to remember all the times I've used the `Officespeak' sayings, like "here's a heads up," or "just touching base," or "team player." The office space is a sick, sick world & DW Martin captures it perfectly with absolutely hilarious writing! His voice is perfectly tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic--just enough so that you can give the book as a gift to your boss without him/her fully realizing just how much you're making fun of your job. I loved it!

I enjoyed reading "Shoot Out". It is filled with behind the scenes stories of how movies were made. This is really how the business of movies really happens.
If you are learning to be an actor or a director or screenwriter, and want to know what happens when you hit "the big time" - this book will give you lots of examples. Amazing stories about famous stars, the movies, deals and the biz.
Well-written and easy to understand. I learned alot about everything that happens before a movie hits the big screen.

                  5 out of 5 stars Vampires-Rifts Style.......2001-11-12

Paladium tackled vamps in an all new way. These critters are the bane of any Rifts campaign! This book was awesome in that it opened the first new area of the Rifts World. If your heroes think they are tough, send them into Mexico. I promise you hours of entertainment!!

4 out of 5 stars Over the top at times, but really well laid-out.......2001-10-29

The premise of the Vampire Kingdoms is that with the collapse of human government, vampires thrived in the dry (i.e., no rainstorms to wipe out an unwary undead)wastes of Mexico. Towards the north, near Texas are human cities and outposts like Ciudad Juarez, Tampico, and the anti-vampire crusaders like Doc Reid.

Now, if you had a nation of vampires that are as strong as say, the vampires in Ravenloft or AD&D in general, humanity is going to die. So what Palladium did was weaken vampires considerably from what you would see in other gaming systems (they are basically the same as vampires in Beyond the Supernatural). Therefore, PCs will have a fighting chance. I personally think they may vampires less fearsome, and while I make vampires much less numerous and organized, I make them more personalized and stronger (I yoinked ideas from Ravenloft for this).

Despite my gripes, I really like most of this worldbook. Ciudad Juarez is described in great detail, with loads of information on the gangs, government (often indistinguishable from the latter item), and people of the city. I wish that Rifts Atlantis had a similar eye for detail--Splynn could have been fleshed out better. The technowizard anti-vampire weapons are a particularly good concept.

Now what I really dislike is the often graphic nature of the worldbook. Yes, vampires are gross--never get an undead supplement expecting cheeriness!--but some of the Vampire Kingdoms often have an Auschwitz twist to them (these are one of the aspects of the vampires that I delete for campaigns). Likewise, many of the Reid's Rangers have become hardened and depraved by continued exposure to the undead, which can become a little unsettling. But by making those dark elements in the Rangers, Palladium gives PCs a chance to be heroes who can redeem a noble idea, so perhaps I'm being too pessimistic.

A book is only an outline for a GM--if you are willing to exercise discretion and are not particularly put-off by the book (I wasn't, and I hope I didn't make the few bad points too magnified), this is one of Palladium's best pieces of work.

5 out of 5 stars A good source book for vampires........1999-03-25

Prsonally I like all the vampire goodies it has in there. As it's a unique and refreshing look at them, and there society.

5 out of 5 stars I feel this was one of Kevins most in depth books to date........1999-02-24

I think that Kevin jumped into this book head first and gave it one heck of a go. When i was first starting to role play, Rifts really attracted my attention. I relish the detail that the Palladium the masters threw into this series of books and have been playing for 6 years. Vampire Kindoms is one of the most in depth books i've seen so far for Rifts. This book comes highly recomended from some one who has been with Kevin ever since the release of the RPG. Bang up job Kevin and all the guys at Palladium. Just one more thing, I need to see more art work from Long.

3 out of 5 stars A better buy would be the South America duo and/or Atlantis........1998-11-01

This book could have been way better! After all it is Kevin Siembieda's first world book. World book Two Atlantis is a MAJOR improvement in writing! The only things in this book I found semi-redeming were: stats for the Vampire, TW anti-vampire weapons, Reid's Rangers, gangs, and travling shows.

The book fleshed out cities more than ENTIRE KINGDOMS in other books! I also think Mr. Siembieda made the vampires WAY to hard to kill by a "normal human"- you have to be a dragon or something! I hope all the G.M.'s out their feel free to modify the Vamps stats, (esp. the wooden stake thru the heart not killing it!)

Like the summary states the South America books+Atlantis have PLENTY of nasty things to throw at your P.C.'s!

All in all the book wasn't great but wasn't bad.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial at best..........2007-08-08

I just finished reading this book and after reading more than a dozen of books on forex and day trading I must say the book is a waste of money. Most of the topics in the book are covered superficially and the few trading strategies presented are poorly documented and contain errors.

2 out of 5 stars Not so useful!.......2007-07-15

In my search for good FX trading books, I found no good book yet, and this book is no exception. This book is poorly written, has no consistent flow, and it does not lead the reader anywhere. Just few areas I found somewhat interesting like correlation between pairs, and volatility as a function of time of the day, and that is why I gave it a rating of 2. Otherwise, 1 will be enough. Someday someone may write a good FX trading book that really respects the intelligence of the reader. Not all FX retail traders are losers!

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource for all active forex traders - highly recommended!.......2007-06-04

Kathy Lien has written one of the most important "must have" books for active forex traders with "Day Trading the Currency Market".

Packed with practical insights and solid trading setups, she's written a superb book that's packed with useful trading how-tos, from one of the most respected forex authorities found.

Specifically, I found her correlation tables and volatility indices very valuable, as well as her step by step explanations of how to look for both fundamental as well as technical market-moving patterns. I'm recommending her book to all my Forex traders on my forexonfire dot com site, as excellent resources to own.

Additonally, she's provided superb explanations of how the mechanics of currency trading works, and the impact of various market opens, when and how to trade various technical chart patterns, and much more.

This book, along with Boris Schlossberg's excellent "Technical Analysis of the Currency Market", are the two best forex books on the market and are highly recommended.

A lot a very important information for beginers and medium traders.
It is very complete from the fundamental view, has a couple a trading thechniques that I guess that works in real trading.
Overall great book!.More than I expected!
To be perfect She must write down more techniques to trade.
Is not nice the advertisement that she perform a long the book, due to the fact that the "Real & Good" information that she mention is not free in fxcm.
Finally read this book definitelly made me a better trader!!!.
