5 out of 5 stars By Far My Favorite In The Series.......2001-01-29

The study of Roman Provincial coinage is one that needs greater attention now than ever before. With the combined factors of the fall of Soviet Communism, the advent of the Internet and it's various auction sites - these coins are becoming plentiful and an inexpensive overview was sorely needed and Mr. Sayles book fits the niche well. While it is not comprehensive, it is an excellent starting place. For the person who is thinking of collecting Roman Provincial coins or who has started already and feels themselves a bit overwhelmed with choices, this book might help them find some direction and focus.

Like all the other books prior to it, it is about 200 pages in length and it has over 300 coin photos. The print is easy on the eyes and the layout over all is well executed and there is a bibliography within most of the chapters and an index in the back of the book as well as a glossary.

The first two chapters describe provincial coinage itself and the provincial territory in general. The third chapter is the longest part of the book (100 pages) is "A Tour Of The Provinces" and takes the reader through the western provinces, the Balkans and Greece, Asia Minor and Mesopotamia, the Levant, Roman Egypt (it is notable here that Kerry Wetterstrom the current publisher & editor of the Celator - formerly Mr. Sayles publication who is a well known collector of the coins of Roman Egypt wrote this section) & North Africa.

The fourth chapter covers some interesting portraits and "client kings" - often the puppet monarchies of the Roman Empire. The 5th chapter is on understanding provincial coinage and the sixth is on deciphering them - attributing them. Make no mistake though, this book makes no intention of being an attribution catalogue/reference work. Rather, chapter six is sort of a guide for the user who has a "coin in hand" that they are trying to decipher.

Chapter seven is on iconography, items like portraits, temples, astrological symbols and other things common to the series. The eighth and final chapter is like several of it's predecessors in the series, a number of "Masterpieces" of Roman Provincial coins - a sort of gallery of the finest types you may come across.

As a collector of Roman-Syrian and Roman-Egyptian coins as well as some other types, I found the book very satisfying and it is my favorite of the whole series. This book put into the hands of young and old readers alike is sure to inspire a fair amount of daydreaming. I would highly recommend this book to the lover of ancient art as well as the numismatist, it is just as beautiful as it is an informative work.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book of basics for a confusing area........2000-12-03

I recently purchased a copy of this book on the strength of other volumes in the series. I was happily surprised to find explanations to many of the questions on Roman Provincial coins (Greek Imperial Coins) that I had not been able to find elsewhere. If you are looking for an excellent introductory volume to this area of ancient numismatics, I can't think of a better place to start. You will want to keep the volume right at hand when you examine your coins, and will enjoy reading it from cover to cover as well. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for any collector........1999-05-01

If you are a starting collector of ancient coins, or even a seasoned pro, this series is a must for your library. Mr. Sayles does a wonderful job of covering a vast subject in a concise and interesting way. Highly recommended!!

      Book Description

Who knew that an innocent piece of paper could be so erotic after a few well-placed folds? Anyone who thought of origami as child's play is in for a surprise with this funny and entertaining book that goes where no other origami books have gone before. Combining the ancient Japanese art of origami with humor and sex, each project transforms an average piece of chaste, virgin paper into something both artistic and enticing. Anyone can go from making simple airplanes to whipping up giant sperms and novelty boobs with simple and evocative line-drawings, easy-to-follow instructions, and color photographs of the finished art. Each project is also accompanied by amusing tales of the inspiration behind it, like "Randy Rabbits," which was inspired by the popular phrase about the legendary insatiable sexual appetite of rabbits.
Other humorous and sexy projects include:
o Coupling-Miniature human figures you can arrange any way you like to act out the Kama Sutra or a big, fat orgy.
o Schwanstucker-A surprisingly accurate and anatomically correct recreation of the penis, fully movable with a gentle squeeze.
o Where's the Magic Bean?-A handy little helper that can guide any man to the land of the unknown called the clitoris.
This is the perfect book for origami enthusiasts in search of new and unusual projects, couples looking for fun and exciting games, jokesters looking for odd and entertaining party tricks, or anyone who can appreciate naughty arts and crafts.

4 out of 5 stars fun, good for beginners.......2007-08-24

I am a complete & total beginner at origami, I was able to make almost all of the figures after a couple of tries each. The text was also quite amusing, the instructions are pretty clear.

I also bought Pornogami. Those figures are much harder to make, after doing most of the ones in Very Naughty Origami a couple of times I was able to make several from Pornogami.

In general the figures in Pornogami are more complex, elaborate, erotic, and more difficult and more time consuming to make.

The origami were very well received by men and women alike at an adults only party.

      5 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2007-07-14

Buy two - one to keep and one to give. The narrative is hilarious, the trivia is cool, and the origami is lots of fun. Set it out at your next party with a stack of paper squares and watch what happens...

3 out of 5 stars Very Naughty Origami.......2007-03-10

This was okay, was not what I was really looking for, but okay for fun.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, but vague designs........2007-01-27

Very fun, creative ideas, though for some of the finished products it was very hard to tell what they were, even in the pics. The "Boobs" were especially vague.

      5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-12-31

The whole idea of sexy or objectional origami is lost in the general origami culture. This book preserves a lot of art that was otherwise extremely hard to come by - and most of it is elegant and interesting. I think the models from this book should be displayed at conventions and discussed in origami gatherings, just the same as any other model. But sadly, it seems most people regard origami as something for small children who should not know anything about sex. So, merely bringing up the existence of models such as those depicted in this book is enough to enrage many people. It's very nice to see books coming out on this subject at long last. Hopefully people will learn to relax and enjoy harmless little models like these.

3 out of 5 stars Book could have a used a few rewrites itself..........2006-10-14

I was interested in finding a great tome about rewriting, as the majority of books out there just focus on cranking out that first draft. This book really disappointed me. There are lots of anecdotal stories about the Biz, but precious few kernels of nuts-and-bolts rewriting advice. Almost 140 pages are spent on a "script" (about the Abominable Snowman!) that is presented three times to show the evolution of a rewrite; however the quality of the script (as well as the author's overly succinct rewrite notes on why a change was made) feels very amateurish. The search for a great rewriting book goes on...

The Heart of Change is the follow-up to John Kotter's enormously popular book Leading Change, in which he outlines a framework for implementing change that sidesteps many of the pitfalls common to organizations looking to turn themselves around. The essence of Kotter's message is this: the reason so many change initiatives fail is that they rely too much on "data gathering, analysis, report writing, and presentations" instead of a more creative approach aimed at grabbing the "feelings that motivate useful action." In The Heart of Change, Kotter, with the help of Dan Cohen, a partner at Deloitte Consulting, shows how his eight-step approach has worked at over 100 organizations. In just about every case, change happened because the players were led to "see" and "feel" the change. In one example, a sales representative underscores a sense of urgency to change a manufacturing process by showing a videotaped interview with an unhappy customer; in another, a purchasing manager makes his point to senior management about corporate waste by displaying on the company's boardroom table the 424 different kinds of gloves that the company had procured through different vendors at vastly different prices. Well written and loaded with real-life examples and practical advice, The Heart of Change towers over other change-management titles. Managers and employees at organizations both big and small will find much to draw from. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

          Book Description

John Kotter's international bestseller Leading Change struck a powerful chord with legions of managers everywhere. It acknowledged the cynicism, pain, and fear they faced in implementing large-scale change-but also armed them with an eight-step plan of action for leaping boldly forward in a turbulent world.

Now, Kotter and coauthor Dan S. Cohen delve deeper into the subject of change to get to the heart of how change actually happens. Through compelling, real-life stories from people in the trenches, in all kinds of organizations, the authors attack the fundamental problem that underlies every major transformation: How do you go beyond simply getting your message across to truly changing people's behavior?

Based on interviews within over 100 organizations in the midst of large-scale change, The Heart of Change delivers the simple yet provocative answer to this question, forever altering the way organizations and individuals approach change. While most companies believe change happens by making people think differently, Kotter and Cohen say the key lies in making them feel differently. They introduce a new dynamic-"see-feel-change"-that fuels action by showing people potent reasons for change that spark their emotions.

Organized around the revolutionary eight-step change process introduced in Leading Change, this story-driven book shows how the best change leaders use not just reports or analysis, but gloves, video cameras, airplanes, office design, and other concrete elements to impel people toward positive action. The authors reveal how this appeal to the heart-over the mind-motivates people to overcome even daunting obstacles to change and produce breathtaking results.

For individuals in every walk of life and companies in every stage of change, this compact, no-nonsense book captures the heart-and the how-of successful change.

John P. Kotter, world-renowned expert on leadership at the Harvard Business School, is the author of many books, including the award-winning, best-selling Leading Change. Dan S. Cohen is a Principal with Deloitte Consulting LLC.

4 out of 5 stars Not as useful as "Leading Change" by Kotter.......2007-06-28

Full of anecdotes about how the principles in "Leading Change" were implemented, I found this less helpful than that book in implementing a culture change. None of the scenarios were close enough to our organization to make a meaningful impact on the management team. A good read though, illustrating Kotter's excellent roadmap to change.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses an Often Forgotten Part of Management Studies---People!.......2007-05-07

In this age of data, management is still about people. This book hits that aspect square on the head. It provides a realistic 8 step process for managing change filled with examples that bring the steps to life. The book is primarily written for managers of change, but the concepts can be useful to anyone at any level of an organization that's in a state of change. (And what organizations aren't?) It can be a bit dry at times, but the stories spice it up and make it bearable. Overall excellent content.

5 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!.......2006-07-15

This book hits the "heart" of what many managers miss in planning change initiatives. This helps us remember that change isn't all number and business decisions. It's the people. I was able to immediately apply some of the ideas and resteered a change initiative successfully. Now all of my supervisors are reading and learning.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentals for helping an organization undergo change successfully.......2006-04-03

This book is the textbook for how an organization can successfully lead with change. I have used the 8-step method with various organizations and successfully 'seen-felt-changed' for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Best Change Management Book I've Read to Date.......2006-02-28

I'm now in a "Change Management" role with my work, and decided to read some texts on the subject to further my understanding of the topic. Of those books that I've read, this one has clearly been the most helpful. Kotter articulates the steps of change in a way that connected with me, and made it real with a number of relevant examples. It's not onerous to read ( <200 pages) but equally isn't "lightweight." While I would never recommend reading only a single book on the topic, I would definitely recommend that this be one of the books you read!

Simplified Chinese. In 1996, John P. Kotter's Leading Change became a runaway best seller, outlining an eight-step program for organizational change that was embraced by executives around the world. Then, Kotter and co-author Dan Cohen's The Heart of Change introduced the revolutionary "see-feel-change" approach, which helped executives understand the crucial role of emotion in successful change efforts. Now, The Heart of Change Field Guide provides leaders and managers tools, frameworks, and advice for bringing these breakthrough change methods to life within their own organizations. Written by Dan Cohen and with a foreword by John P. Kotter, the guide provides a practical framework for implementing each step in the change process, as well as a new three-phase approach to execution: creating a climate for change, engaging and enabling the whole organization, and implementing and sustaining change. Hands-on diagnostics--including a crucial "change readiness module"--reveal the dynamics that will help or hinder success at each phase of the change process. Both flexible and scaleable, the frameworks presented in this guide can be tailored for any size or type of change initiative. Filled with practical tools, checklists, and expert commentary, this must-have guide translates the most powerful approaches available for creating successful change into concrete, actionable steps for you and your organization. Simplified Chinese. 218pp.
