Book Description
During the 1950s, many women used their sewing skills to recreate the incredibly feminine styles that were adapted into commercial sewing patterns. The 1950s saw renowned designers such as Lanvin, Fath, Schiaparelli, and Givenchy licensing their names and designs to pattern companies in record numbers: designers from Paris to New York to Hollywood can be accounted for in the pattern catalogs of the 1950s. Any woman who could sew could have the latest designer styles for a fraction of the cost. Using over 600 color photos, this informative and enjoyable text outlines the beginnings of the huge pattern industry, its evolution, and continuation through the 1950s. Numerous examples of pattern-related ephemera are pictured along with different types of fashions--from dresses to separates to evening gowns to lingerie. Also included are accessories, needlework, gifts, and toys. This is an invaluable guide for all who are interested in sewing or designing.

Blueprints of Fashion: Home Sewing Patterns of the 1950s.......2007-08-19
What a magic book! From the history of commercial patterns to the fantastic quality of the colour photography, the original pattern envelopes just came alive. The wonderful glossy paper quality of the book just enhanced it all.
A visual delight!.......2006-06-03
This is a *wonderful* reference for anyone interested in vintage fashion or vintage patterns. Wade Laboissonniere tells the history with page upon page of breathtaking photographs of patterns from the past. Each page truly is more delightful than the last. I will be ordering Blueprints of Fashion: Home Sewing Patterns of the 1940s immediately and can only hope that Mr. Laboissonniere is working on the 1960s and 1970s.
Wonderful reference for dressmakers and fifties lovers.......2000-06-19
This book begins with an interesting overview of the beginnings of the home-sewing pattern industry, and has many interesting tidbits on that alone. But the real treat is page upon page of reproductions of the fronts of pattern envelopes from the fifties, most in color, and all beautiful. Hundreds of ideas for clothing for today.

ART Exhibition Catalog
Book Description
With their infectious brand of Scottish indie pop, Belle & Sebastian have been cult and critical favorites for years. The band's colorful lyrics and gorgeous, full bodied melodies have provided Image Comics with the inspiration for a new kind of comic anthology. With Put the Book Back on the Shelf, a stellar collection of independent comic creators and cartoonists put their own spins on a cross section of Belle & Sebastian's songs, crafting stories inspired by the band's music, drawn from the band's entire catalog.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Concept -- Obviously More Interesting to B&S Fans.......2006-10-16
This is a pretty interesting idea: build a comics anthology around the works of a musical group. I don't know how or why the Scottish indie band Belle & Sebastian became involved in the project (the book certainly doesn't say anything), but this collection of 24 original works (generally 5-10 pages each) is inspired by songs from their various albums. I have to admit while I more or less like B&S when I hear them in the background of parties or in people's cars, I've never been moved to buy anything by them and I couldn't name a single song of theirs. So, while I'm sure B&S fans will have plenty of fun arguing about the visual and narrative interpretation of the songs in this collection, the only basis I have to evaluate the anthology are the comics themselves. Unfortunately, this means I'm missing a rather crucial layer of understanding, but so be it.
In terms of pure story and art, my favorite piece was "Expectations", written by Christopher Butcher and inked by Kalman Andrasofskzy. In ten pages, they skillfully cover a young woman's passage from angry 9th-grade outsider to mature young writer. Another very good piece is Mark Smith and Paul Maybury's five-page "We Rule the School", about a little boy who discovers a little ninja in his backpack. Jennifer de Guzman's story and Brian Beluw's art for "Fancy Dress" combine for an interesting version of the dangers of not speaking one's feelings. Ian Carney and Jonathan Edwards combine for a clever take on office sexual tensions in "Step Into My Office, Baby!" with its weirdly Nixonian protagonist. And Steven Griffin's "If You Find Yourself Caught in Love" ends things on a nice up note, as a young man overcomes post-breakup depression and moves on with his life.
In addition to the above, there were several other pieces I liked simply for their artwork: Andi Watson's Jetsons/Spy vs. Spy pastel stylized '60s art in "I Could Be Dreaming", Brazilian artist Kako's wordless, slick and commercial"Dog on Wheels" (very different from the rest of the book with its "The Fast and the Furious" style), Mathew Armstrong's ink and watercolor "You Made Me Forget My Dreams" (reminiscent in some ways of Gorillaz), Charles Brownstein and Dave Crosland's very nice example of how drawing and collage can have vitality in "Beautiful", and John Heebink's semi-retro ink and limited palette in "Nice Day for a Sulk".
Anyway, it's an interesting concept, albeit one that B&S fans will get a lot more from than readers without a strong interest in the band and its music.
Belle and Sebastian, how I love thee.......2006-04-08
Reading this graphic novel is a uniquely trippy experience. As I read each story, I played the song that inspired the writer or the artist - and I couldn't tell if it was the music that made the story more vivid, or the story that made the music more real. It took me over two hours to finish reading the whole thing and it left me feeling very content and happy, like a good night's sleep after a long, exhausting day.
I can see why Put the Book Back on the Shelf might not be for all fans because some writers made quite a lot of unexpected interpretations. For instance, the strip for the song If She Wants Me has a really sad story, but I imagined the song as having something to do with two young friends playing in a grassy field. Another one of my favorite strips, We Rule the School, is about a kid who finds a ninja in his backpack. The song didn't fit the story too well but never mind - it was still so much fun to read.
In spite of whatever clashing interpretations there might be, Put the Book Back on the Shelf is a must for any Belle and Sebastian fan. Reading the anthology heightened my appreciation of their music, and made me fall in love with the songs I haven't listened to till tonight. I wouldn't recommend this book to those who are merely curious about the band, though. If a taste of their music is what you're looking for, I suggest you listen to these songs instead:
Waiting for the Moon to Rise
Funny Little Frog
Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
If She Wants Me
The Blues are Still Blue
Belle & Sebastian comics - how the hell did this come about?.......2006-03-18
First off, I'm a rabid Belle & Sebastian fan. I own everything the group has ever released. When a pirate copy of their new album reached my hands, I refused it and bought the record at my local indie music shop. I also used to be a big comics fan. Things tapered off when I got to college, but I will still sheepishly peruse the graphic novel section at Barnes & Noble.
So when I saw that Belle & Sebastian was releasing an anthology of short stores by independent comics creators based on their songs, I was overjoyed. I pre-ordered my copy and waited patiently for the postman. When the package finally arrived, I ripped it open and grasped with sweaty palms what was sure to be the finest piece of comics literature ever created...
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit disappointed. I thought that every story would inspire flashes of B&S's music, and that I could literally listen to the stories as well as read them. What I found instead is an inconsistent collection whose creators' interpretations of the songs differed greatly from my own. "Lazy line painter Jane," a song that inspires me to dance around my apartment like an ADD-riddled adolescent, becomes a dark tale of sexual experimentation and herpes. Don't get me wrong, some of the stories are grand; I particularly like the "Legal Man" strip. However I believe the merging of these two different genres with so little input from the original authors severly handicaps the book's potential.
But I'm still the world's biggest Belle & Sebastian fan, so I'll read it to death.
A must have for fans!.......2006-03-13
I got into Belle and Sebastain about six or seven years ago, and this is great. Better than a DVD! As I was reading each story, the songs would play in my head, I was smiling the whole time.
If you love Belle don't let this pass you by.

ALG are sooo funny.......2007-04-01
i think this book is so funny and cute. it is a hardcover book with cartoons in them. i really like it. it is funny. not a children's book so if you want to buy it for your kid find them something else. it is cute for a teenager or adult.
Great Gift for my Angry Little Teenager :-}.......2007-03-17
I purchased these postcards as a gift for my 16 year old and she absolutely loved them. The 'Angry Little Girls' books help to bring a lighter side to the very roller coaster life of a teenage girl. Even though they are silly and fun, they really created a common iterest between me and my daughter. Also, she loves sharing the postcards and the books with her girlfriends. Both make great gifts. :-}
expected more cynicism .......2006-03-11
Being a fan of Angry Little Girls, I thought this would be an amazing calendar with lots of sarcastic remarks. While there were a few months that did use such headings, for the most part it was verging on corny. Example: March states "Anything is possible!"
hysterical!.......2005-08-18
She has a fun website: http://www.angrylittlegirls.com and you can sign up for a free e-mail address, like [...]. So funny! I love this book b/c it really addresses the random anti-asian feeling in the "where are you from? no really, where are you from?" comments I always receive. Also, the mom is just like mine. spot on crazy asian mom. hooray!
wonderful!!!.......2005-08-15
I really love Angry Little Girls. I think it says what I have been feeling but never brave enough to say. The thing about anger is that it is at times explosive, pensive, seething, or it's just ridiculous to be angry. I get this book and the way it delivers the irony about anger. People who have left reviews of the book that expected the book to be edgier, or more angrier, or wanted less cursing, or thought there was too much cursing just don't get it. ( I also suspect the ones who don't viscerally understand this book are men, who don't get why women are angry in the first place!) Anger comes in many forms. (the quiz) The comics in this book reflect the many changing forms anger might take and pokes fun at being angry as well. I say "YAY" for this book and that someone finally said what I feel in a fun and colorful way. Reading this book makes me feel good. I love it!

Prudes and the faint-of-heart shield your eyes! The stunning Sin in Soft Focus contains some of the most breathtaking black-and-white stills ever taken, all from the debaucherous decade before the Hollywood production code was established. With chapters devoted to "The Warners Grit," "The MGM Gloss," and "The Paramount Glow," and to horror films, gangster movies, and the sexy scandal of Mae West, Mark A. Vieira illustrates the story of classic Hollywood's most delightfully lascivious period--brought to a stop when Joseph Breen began enforcing the puritanical production code of 1934.
The text of this book is fascinating even for those familiar with the films of the era, but the mesmerizing photographs are what will keep readers glued to the pages. Oversized and abundant stills capture stars like Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, William Powell, Mae West, Joan Blondell, James Cagney, and Greta Garbo in striking clarity, dashing poses, and of course, shockingly revealing outfits. Voyeurs seeking more on this naughty era will also want to read Thomas Doherty's Pre-Code Hollywood. --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
Sin in Soft Focus showcases a scintillating era in film history: "pre-code Hollywood," that boldly creative period in the early 1930s when defiant producers flouted the restrictions of the censors, who tried--but failed--to ban everything from sex, profanity, and excessive violence to "lustful kissing." Lavishly illustrated with rare film stills, the book captures the artistry and bravura of the era's controversial films.
Customer Reviews:
Text also in soft-focus.......2005-02-27
While I can't understand the nit-picking objections of some previous reviewers, the text here does seem subsumed to the illustrations and to what end. Understanding the context of pre-Code Hollywood is not something that requires pictures. Viera's overview is easy enough to digest but why not something a little deeper, was there neither world enough nor time?
BEAUTIFUL AND COMPELLING........2003-01-22
In this exhaustively researched, beautifully illustrated book, author Vieira does an exceptional job. Recently, I have been drawn to the fascinating world of Pre-Code Cinema. There were some really realistically seedy, controversial and revealing films made in the Hollywood of the late twenties and early thirties. Many films which have been previously believed lost or destroyed have been rescued for the public to enjoy once more on either video or TCM. Hot stuff for the depression era! Fascinating films of the era include: THE STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE which starred the unique Miriam Hopkins. In this one, she plays the title character who is lured into the underworld, gets raped - and finds she likes it (!). Even sweetly saccharine Loretta Young had a dark-side: check out MIDNIGHT MARY. What I find ironic is that to many people, many vintage films are considered too pretty or unrealistic. This book proves otherwise!! A thoroughly fascinating venture into a little-known side of Hollywood which existed a scant half-dozen years: the era of Pre-Code talkies. A very informative and revealing laboured work of art - and a fine resource - for fans of vintage film.
So Many Movies, So Little Time.......2002-08-31
Like Mick LaSalle's wonderful book COMPLICATED WOMEN which chronicles the impact the Hayes Office had on decimating the interesting roles portrayed by women, this book serves as an interesting companion piece. It chronicles the somewhat racy plots and the female characters portrayed in pre-code movies.
Bordering on an almost scholarly take on this topic, this tome takes you through a lot of the grittier plots tackled by early Hollywood films and the wonderful actresses who portrayed the lead characters.
By the end of this book, you will find yourself craving a pre-code Harlow, Shearer, Crawford, Garbo or Bow film and will want to devour a lot of them like a 21 oz. bag of Hershey kisses or Raisinets. Such were the days when little titans like Hayes weren't dictating the mantra called the CODE and films were a little risque and fun and not always that predictable.
Entertaining look at a formidable time in film history.......2002-01-30
This book offers a great collection of photographs and an insightful look at the early days of Hollywood when religious groups, politicians and self-important studio execs were grappling with Hollywood's role and responsibilities. Many nearly forgotten films are discussed. Like McCarthyism, this issues deserves this look so that we don't forget where society has been. A great book for film buffs.
NICE BOOK, WRONG PAIRING.......2001-10-25
SIN IN SOFT FOCUS is both a great general history of pre-Code and a gorgeous book of photography. But ladies, ladies, ladies, why oh why, if you're to sell it with another book, aren't you pairing it with COMPLICATED WOMEN by Nick LaSalle, which truly complements Vieira's work and is a very great book in its own right? Now THAT would be a deal.

Excellent way to add to your collection.......2000-04-13
As with any choice there are going to be works missing, performances you love which aren't here, and odd selections. This book contains all of those but still gives a good balance of classic performances, contemporay pieces and a range of prices. For example, Bach is represented by period performances and Glen Gould. There are recomendations for music from the earliest Western Traditions to contempory composers. Conductors and orchestras from around the world are listed in a sensible way. In addition there are notes on the composers and pieces recommended which are informative. It is an excellent way to start a collection or to suppliment an already existing one. The discs are available in Europe and North America (I buy through Amazon!). There is an equally good Rough Guide to Opera CDs.
Book Description
A comprehensive "how-to" manual to introduce beginners to the world of cryptic crosswords, as well as a collection of the best of Cox & Rathvon's puzzles from Atlantic Monthly -- published here in book form for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
This Guide Helped Me More Than Any Other.......2005-06-24
This is the book that got me started on cryptic puzzles. I had read various free pamphlets offered by newspapers and magazines that ran British cryptics and I had looked at online guides. It didn't all come together until I worked through this book. One nice thing is that, in addition to explaining the various types of clues and how to solve them, the authors provide lots of progressively more difficult practice puzzles that slowly but surely get you into the whole cryptic puzzle mindset.
One minor drawback... This book may not completely prepare you for the difficulty of The Times of London puzzle and other British cryptics. Perhaps the authors could do a follow up volume that would prepare Americans for a few of the eccentricities of British puzzles?
Still, this is the best introduction to cryptics I have encountered. Warning: Once you learn how to do the cryptics, traditional puzzles, even challenging New York Times puzzles, may seem a little dull.
Get ready for a challenge.......2003-12-30
For those of you who are getting bored with conventional crossword puzzles and want to try something different, try a cryptic crossword. It combines the grid and clues of a regular crossword with a bit of wordplay to make it tougher and more interesting. This book provides excellent instructions on how to solve one, with plenty of examples and 8 warm-up puzzles. Next come 15 standard block cryptic puzzles for you to practice on. Then comes the type of cryptic puzzle that Cox and Rathvon are known for: their variety cryptics. These puzzles have a extra twist to them, such as missing clues or grid letters, words changing direction or position in the grid, modified letters, and other devilish permutations to keep you on your toes. These 50 variety cryptics are taken from the pages of the Atlantic Monthly. Finally, Cox and Rathvon provide a couple of chapters on the rules and strategies for creating your own cryptic puzzles.
Once you get the hang of it, solving cryptics is like eating potato chips... you simply can't stop. So you will be happy to know that there is a companion book to this one, called "Atlantic Monthly Cryptic Crosswords," that picks up where this one leaves off and provides another 45 devilishly difficult variety cryptics for you to enjoy.
how-to.......2002-07-27
Cox and Rathvon are the best in the biz at cryptic crosswords, and this is an excellent introduction to their work. They have written a very clear and helpful explanation for how cluing works in cryptics, and also a variety of puzzles to practice with, ranging from those for rank beginners to some "variety" cryptics that will challenge savvy, experienced solvers.
Excellent beginner's introduction to cryptic crosswords.......1996-12-23
The American crosswording public is largely unfamiliar with
the cryptic crossword, and are baffled when one turns up.
No more! Cox and Rathvon introduce us to this clever and
entertaining form of wordplay, taking a very effective
phased approach, teaching us the tricks one by one until
we're ready to set off on our own.
The book also includes eight practice puzzles and 65 full-sized
puzzles, graded by difficulty.
Anyone who loves word games will want this book. But beware! You'll become hooked
on cryptic crosswords; don't say I didn't warn you!
Book Description
The new paradigm for investing and building wealth in the twenty-first century. The Future for Investors reveals new strategies that take advantage of the dramatic changes and opportunities that will appear in world markets.
Jeremy Siegel, one of the world’s top investing experts, has taken a long, hard, and in-depth look at the market and the stocks that investors should acquire to build long-term wealth. His surprising finding is that the new technologies, expanding industries, and fast-growing countries that stockholders relentlessly seek in the market often lead to poor returns. In fact, growth itself can be an investment trap, luring investors into overpriced stocks and overly competitive industries.
The Future for Investors shatters conventional wisdom and provides a framework for picking stocks that will be long-term winners. While technological innovation spurs economic growth, it has not been kind to investors. Instead, companies that have marketed tried-and-true products for decades in slow-growth or even declining industries have superior returns to firms that develop “the bold and the new.” Industry sectors many regard as dinosaurs—railroads and oil companies, for example—have actually beat the market.
Professor Siegel presents these strategies within the context of the coming shift in global economic power and the demographic age wave that will sweep the United States, Europe, and Japan. Contrary to the popular belief that these economic and demographic trends doom investors to poor returns, Professor Siegel explains the True New Economy and how to take advantage of the coming surge in invention, discovery, and economic growth.
The faster the world changes, the more important it is for investors to heed the lessons of the past and find the tried-and-true companies that can help you beat the market and prosper in the years ahead.
Customer Reviews:
dividends resurface.......2007-01-27
The professor touts stocks and funds that feature dividends.Up until 1958 dividend income on stocks exceeded the interest income on long term bonds. For this reason it is difficult to assume that the good professors recommendation to go for dividend income is a prudent strategy when his data is biased by a condition that does not exist in today's market. I would prefer to use index funds that provide excellent diversification and insure that you are being compensated for the risks taken. To explore this strategy I can recommend a book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market Buy 2500 different stocks Pay no commission. It takes off where this book ends.
Investing does not take a lot of work, in fact, the more you read of the wrong material of which there is an abundant supply, the more you will trade, and the less you will make in the market.
Active buying and selling of stocks by individuals will only run up brokerage commissions and waste your time and money. Turning your money over to a professionally managed mutual fund is even worse because of the fees you are required to pay well compensated `experts' to waste their time. Classic Siegel.......2007-01-17
For those who have read "Stocks for the Long Run", this is right up that same alley in terms of style and no-frills content, after all, it is written by a researcher. However, this is a great book with lots of wisdom to digest. Siegel discusses the "growth trap", a very counterintuitive point that everyone should be aware of....it alone makes the book worth reading. If you are a serious investor/advisor it is a must read. I would caution those who would take this book and start trying to manage a portfolio of all high dividend paying stocks...Siegel's conclusions are insightful, but the right application of them is still critical. One of the most important books on investing that I have ever read. Based in fact, backed up with decades of research, this is a must read.
Good Book, Has Some Holes.......2006-09-19
The Future for Investors has some really great points - the main one being that the compounding power of reinvested dividends should be a significant consideration in stock selection. I agree with this approach, and Siegel makes some persuasive arguments that it provides higher returns and less volitility than other approaches.
However, I agree with some of the criticisms of the book as well:
1) Siegel does not address the tax impact on dividends. His research uses 1957 as a starting point. While our current dividend tax rate is 15% at the federal level, during most of the period from 1957 the rate was higher (sometimes the same as the income rate). During these times, the reinvested amount of the dividend would have only been about 60-70% of the total. Thus, returns would have been lower. (Some people have said that this would only make a marginal difference - maybe so, but it might have changed his argument in comparing Standard Oil to IBM as well as the small advantages he pointed out in some of his stock recomendations. A 1% per annum difference over a multi-decade period amounts to serious money).
2) Siegel cites Altria as the best performing stock during this period. I won't disagree with the conclusion, but I will point out that going for high dividends and reinvesting them works well only when the company survives. What if Beth Steel had been your choice rather than Altria? You would have received lots of dividends and reinvested them, but the ultimate outcome would have been a disaster. The point is that reinvesting dividends works especially well when the reinvestment happens during a difficult time for the stock AND (most importantly) the stock MUST recover from those difficult times. This is not generally the case, but it was with Altria.
3) Siegel's idea that the developed world will sell assets (stocks, bonds, etc) to the developing world to fund the huge retirement wave is full of problems. While the strategy will work to maintain the standard of living of the baby boomers, it will also permanently ruin the future for all subsequent generations of Americans. If you sell the assets (companies) that create your wealth in order to live a comfortable retirement (read consumption), you are giving away your ability to earn in the future. This is something Warren Buffett has been warning us about for a few years now. You cannot indefinitely fund consumption with income producing assets. When you decrease your income producing assets by selling for consumption, you increase your current standard of living at the expense of your future standard of living.
Criticisms aside, this is still a thought provoking book that is well written. Ironically, even though I think there are some questions about many parts of the book, I generally agree with the ultimate types of investments that Siegel recommends - just for different reasons.
Eye opener!.......2006-08-14
I have been an Investment Counselor for over 40 years. This book makes more common sense than any book I have read on the subject. My main regret is that is wasn't around earlier. It is the key to Wealth and Security.
