Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to know options in the arts.......2001-07-09

As both an artist and a former Director of a Career Center at an Art school, this is the best resource I have found to explain, not only the options available, but the necessary steps to be sucessful in those careers. Working professional are highlighted, typical job details are specified, and the necessary (appropriate) educational requirements are discussed. Perfect for anyone, of any age, interested in pursuing a career in the visual arts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, helpful, and detailed resource for arts careers.......2000-11-16

This is among the most outstanding and useful books I have encountered on this subject. It is visually appealing (very important for artistic types) and incredibly informative. It covers hundreds of visual arts professions and gives practical advice on which courses to take in college that will give you the necessary background. The information is personalized through a case study format-interviews with people who currently have this job description. One of the biggest questions career seekers have, and one that is not usually addressed in career books is: Which school should I go to? It is not a question that is easily answered because different schools offer different programs. This book provides some of the answers; in the back is a comprehensive chart of schools all over the U.S. and Canada detailing which courses of study they offer within visual arts professions. I wish I had had this book when I was starting my career!

1 out of 5 stars audience aim too limited.......2000-05-20

The book is attractive and details various professions within the art industry. However, this book seems to address a very narrow audience of young people who are trying to decide on which college and which discipline to pursue.

Those of us who can't transform ourselves back into 16-year-olds but who want to pursue and/or expand on our careers in art are completely left out.

This book is only for those under the age of 18 who know exactly what they want to do.

4 out of 5 stars Sloppy writers take heart!.......2000-06-24

This book is designed to let adults with less-than-perfect (i.e. illegible) handwriting analyze and correct their own worst habits. Rather than forcing a return to strict third-grade, Palmer-method cursive, Ms. Ernst's book encourages the student to develop a clear, yet distinctive, handwriting style.

        Book Description

In his 18th collection of the fabulous comic strip, FoxTrot creator Bill Amend delivers a look at teen and family life that is consistently fresh, irreverent, and wacky. The antics of adolescent siblings Jason, Peter, and Paige try parents Roger and Andy but deliver laughs to readers as they're drawn into their chaotic world.

The wildly popular and enduring strip has won-and kept-fans nationwide, as they keep coming back for more of the crazy life of the Fox family. Amend keeps his comedy fresh by dipping into the pop culture pool, which never fails to provide plenty of fodder for him to parody brilliantly.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The FoxTrot Gang are a Real Crack-Up.......2007-02-17

I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.

The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.

5 out of 5 stars My Hot Dog Went Out, Can I Have Another? Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-19

I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspicoulsly wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newpaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.

Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed that he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortuantly I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Best Foxtrot Book in Years!.......2005-10-26

This is the best collection of Foxtrot cartoons in quite a few years. I love the comic, but normally don't laugh much. This collection had me laughing out loud numerous times. BUY NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun book .......2005-10-16

This was a fun book to read with my son. He actually wanted to read.

5 out of 5 stars Another great collection.......2005-10-12

Bill Amend does it again. This is another great collection of Foxtrot comics. It features another of Roger's attempt to create a perfect barbecue that turns into a Fourth of July fireworks and Peter and Jason wondering whether Bruce Springsteen gets his inspiration from watching Roger's attempt at barbecuing. This is another great addition to your collection.

Iowa is the most normal place on the planet, so the people and places covered in this book will be as everyday as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white bread, but as twisted as a corn dog dipped in horseradish. As filmmaker David Lynch ("Blue Velvet", "Eraserhead") shows in his movies, it's what's beneath the surface that's really tells the story. As for Iowa's story, let the facts speak for themselves.

There's a lot of "weird" out there, and this little slice of Americana delivers the quirk in spades. While I enjoyed the book, the potential was there for it to be so much more.

I do love this part of the country, however. The book made me smile, and hey, that alone makes it worthqhile.

Sit down with Wild Open Spaces and you'll find yourself humming "da da dum da da dum da da dum dum dum dum..." (the Lone Ranger theme)! What a fun way to remember those days of adventure, horses and true friendship. Those movies are so well illustrated here and you'll find your memories matched by the many interviews! As a cowboy shooter, I really enjoyed this book and have picked it up again and again. Mount up and read with other lovers of the Old West! 5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Book.......2005-04-06

Exciting, profound, moving, full of fresh insights and even a few surprising revelations-Wild Open Spaces is the best book I have ever read on the significant and enduring role of Western movies in American culture. But this is far from a boring scholarly treatise: It is a colorful celebration of Western films and the people who enjoy them. Author Yardena Rand has brilliantly included hundreds of quotes from Western film fans she interviewed from every demographic group-age, gender, race, ethnic background, and region. Their heartfelt, thoughtful views on their favorite Westerns and Western stars are woven throughout this book, and they are what make Wild Open Spaces so unique and memorable. The author's exclusive surveys answer intriguing questions such as who is the more popular Western star, John Wayne or Clint Eastwood?

More than 50 million Americans describe themselves as fans of Western movies. After reading Yardena Rand's fascinating book, now I understand precisely why the stories of the Old West, as told on film, remain a vibrant link to our heritage--hopefully forever.

5 out of 5 stars A superb giftbook for Western fans.......2005-03-09

Wild Open Spaces: Why We Love Westerns is a celebration of Western-themed novels, movies, and television shows, and the fans who enjoy them - 30% of American adults today! Known for their gritty realism, clearly defined characters, heroic heroes and villanous villains, and clear-cut values, Westerns have captured the American consciousness. Over 130 black-and-white stills, publicity shots, and off-stage photos of Westerns illustrate this involving history of a widely beloved popular culture genre, however romanticized. A superb giftbook for Western fans, and also a though-provoking resource for popular culture and entertainment studies.

A must-buy for those who want challenging, clever and sometimes witty crossword puzzles. I'd rate the degree of difficulty as being just below that of The Washington Post. Lots of Hollywood references make it a bit more fun for those who love old movies. I also appreciated the fact that every LA Times puzzle book I've worked to date contains actual words, not misspellings or created ones.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Information.......2007-01-23

This was recommended reading by a coworker. I was very skeptical having been through so many training programs and asked to read so many stupid sales technique books. This takes a suprisingly different, logical approach. I've been in sales for almost 10 years and will absolutely start incorporating suggestions ASAP.

5 out of 5 stars New Solution Selling Draws a Sales Map.......2007-01-17

The New Solution Selling by Keith Eades is definitely worth reading. This book is destined to become a classic and will be sitting on my bookshelf next to Neil Rackham's SPIN Selling. If you are a seasoned sales professional, this book will help you examine your existing sales process and look at areas that could be refined in order to increase your sales productivity. If you are new to sales, this book provides an excellent process that will help you "ramp-up" quickly. If you read Eade's original Solution Selling book, you will find that this book is updated and supplies some new concepts.

The New Solution Selling states that the formula for success is: Pain x Power x Vision x Value x Control = Sale. While the formula is deceptively simple, the implementation can be rather complex. This book helps salespeople focus on the customer's "pain" and stresses the importance of providing a solution that not only stops the pain, but also adds value. Eades makes this process manageable by providing readers with a logical, well thought out plan, supplemented with many "real-life" and fictitious examples. This is accomplished through by a method that consists of (1) a philosophy (the customer is the focal point), (2) a map (getting from where you are to where you want to be) , (3) a methodology (with tools, job aids, techniques and procedures), and (4) a sales management system (process to increase productivity).

Eades maintains that salespeople often "say" they provide solutions, but in reality, they simply provide a product. The New Solution Selling focuses on understanding the underlying causes of customer problems, instead of the symptoms. Consequently, a correct "diagnosis" must be made before the salesperson "prescribes" a solution. Solution Selling provides several models to help salespeople isolate the "pain" by examining the interdependence of the key players within the buying organization.

Once salespeople understand the pain, they must explore the impact of that pain and create a buying vision. One problem in developing needs and creating a vision is that salespeople often do not know what questions to ask. Eades provides a "Pain Sheet" to help salespeople develop situational knowledge of customers and their business. This is accomplished through investigating three key areas: (1) diagnose reasons, (2) explore impact and (3) visualizing capabilities by asking open questions, control questions and confirm questions.

In the past, Solution Selling focused on strategies dealing with opportunities for buyers who were not actively looking for a solution. Now, it has been enhanced to assist salespeople dealing with customers who are actively looking. Eades maintains that when a customer is actively looking, but you are not the one who helped create the vision, your chances of winning that sale are only 10%. He provides strategies to deal with these types of customers and also stresses the importance of being willing to walk away from the opportunity.

Overall, The New Solution Selling is an excellent book for both the novice and experienced salesperson. It provides a road map for the sales process and helps ensure that the path the salesperson takes is the one that leads to a sale. I'd highly recommend reading this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking.......2006-03-12

This book offers some nontraditional and thought-provoking perceptions on selling solutions, not products. The step-by-step approach to implementing a conversational method to selling that is presented allows the salesperson to focus on streamlining the sales process and achieving greater success in fewer steps. Any salesperson should find value in this book.

          4 out of 5 stars PROCESS SELLING.......2005-09-24

Excellent book to give you a method to map your progress in the selling experience. Anyone who seems lost this is a great tool to get back on track.

          5 out of 5 stars A Significant Contribution.......2005-03-17

Another book about sales? By now, what could possibly be "new"? Indeed, over the years, there have been many brilliant books written about the art and science of salesmanship. For example, Neil Rackham's SPIN Selling, Michael Bosworth's Solution Selling and CustomerCentric Selling as well as Stephen E. Heiman and Diana Sanchez's The New Strategic Selling and The New Conceptual Selling®. This volume clearly deserves to be included among them.

According to Eades, "Solution Selling" is a sales process which consists of a philosophy (the customer is the focal point), a map (how to get from where you are to where you want to be), a methodology (it includes tools, job aids, techniques, and procedures to succeed), and a sales management system (by which to analyze pipelines, qualify opportunities, and coach skills). Thus summarized, "Solution Selling" may seem to many, especially those with years of sales experience, to be simplistic. In fact, Eades offers some thought-provoking and unorthodox perspectives on what is seldom (if ever) simple: Persuading a sufficient number of people to buy whatever you offer for sale and then continue to do so, and at a margin sufficient to ensure sustainable profitability for your organization. Amazon and Borders offer this volume for sale in combination with Bosworth's book of the same title. Yes, there is much common material but also significant differences which reveal themselves when both Bosworth's book and then Eades's book are read in sequence.

FYI, I am among those who believe that (a) marketing and sales are separate but interdependent areas of activity, and (b) directly or indirectly, everyone within a given organization should be involved in both. With his material carefully organized within five Parts, Eades explains "Solution Selling" concepts; how to create new opportunities (e.g. "Diagnosing Before You Prescribe"); how to engage in active opportunities (e.g. "Selling When You Are Not First"), how to gain access to people with power, control the selling process, and close; and how to manage the sales process (e.g. "Creating and Sustaining High Performance Sales Cultures." Once marketing initiatives have created or increased demand for what is offered, the sale must then be made. Literally [in italics] everyone [end italics] within a given organization can and should -- directly or indirectly -- support marketing and sales initiatives.

Of course, it remains for each reader to determine which of Eades's ideas are most relevant, and, how best to apply them within a given competitive environment. However, I presume to offer a concluding word of caution: Make certain that you have a [in italics] repeatable, integrated sales execution process [end italics] rather than a grab bag of disconnected, often contradictory ideas about sales. When a horse is designed by a committee, the result frequently does resemble a camel.
