Voluptuous shapes in luscious color, Dale Chihuly's large-scale glass sculptures are all about immediate sensory experience. It's likely no book could capture the intoxication of being in the presence of clusters of glass forms that look like undersea life or tropical forests, hanging overhead or rising up from the floor in fabulous splendor.
Chihuly Projects offers 200 full-page photographs (in supersaturated color) of 34 installations the Seattle artist created over a 30-year span for public and private clients, plus chatty comments by the artist and members of his staff. A fine essay by the art writer Barbara Rose places Chihuly's work in the context of contemporary art and his own life. (An eye injury in the mid-'70s precipitated his shift from blowing individual tabletop glass pieces to becoming the director of a team effort.) But the photographs tend to flatten out Chihuly's generous shapes, and the real-world settings of the sculptures are often so busy visually that, seen from the fixed vantage point of a still photo, they compete distractingly with the art. Although some pieces are shown in different stages of completion, it's hard to grasp how any given project actually comes together from start to finish.
A splashy book that seems to be trying to match the brio and outsized vision of its artist, Chihuly Projects serves primarily as an eye-popping general tour of work that ranges from a 70-by-30-foot ceiling for the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas to an outdoor "chandelier" (for a retreat in Washington State) with 1,200 handblown glass icicles--and an attached heater for melting snow to add hanging pendants of real ice. --Cathy Curtis

This book is a fabulous deal. With about 75% of the book being full page color photographs of Chihuly's work, this volume really helped me discover who this artist is and what his work is all about. The reproductions are of the highest quality as is the art. The two essays opening the book are well written, allowing beginners and veterens of glass alike to pick up info about the artist, his technique, and his place in history. Notes from Chihuly and his team are provided to give a personal inside look at the art, which I found to be very interesting. Even if you don't know anything about glass, buy this as a coffee table book. I guarantee it will make you look culturally saavy and will be a great conversation starter. Best of all, if you'd rather look than read, this is definitely the volume for you. It's like taking a world tour of Chihuly's glass installations, art that is accessible and fun to view for all.

This book is best described by the words color and form.Many collectors of glass have discovered Chihuly and his freedom of color and form but not many can travel to see his installations all over the world. This book is so well done it satisfies the eye with the color and forms but the full size of the works of Dale Chihuly are only realized in person,so let it suffice to enjoy the best book on Dale Chihuly and his works.This is excellent photography of Art Glass at its finest.

Love it, but I feel like I'm getting ripped off.......2007-02-03
I love the Simpsons and these books are a "must have" for any serious fan. Plot summaries, gags, quotes, movie references, song lyrics, and "the stuff you may have missed" are all great. As I am rewatching the seasons on DVD, I love to pull out these books and refer along.
However, I am a little irritated at how much I feel Groening and company to be "milking" these books and the consumer for $$$$. The first book contained 8 seasons and was great. Now lately, all three of the subsequent books only cover two seasons? This latest book was released in 2005 at the beginning of the 17th season. Surely they could have made more of an effort to make the book more current and include the 15th and 16th seasons as well.
I'm a little annoyed that it cost me $12 to buy the first book in this series that covered EIGHT seasons, and yet I've had to spend $42 on three books which have only covered SIX.

This book is perfect for any simpsons fan. You can follow the entire show with this book. The funnest part is reading along as you watch the particular show, and find the little stuff the book puts out

This book is probably a must for any real "Simpsons" fan. It is full of summaries of each episode in the 13th and 14th season, as well as memorable quotes, interesting trivia, and things you may have missed. The book offers interesting character designs from different episodes, as well as on-going couch gags and what Homer likes ("Mmmm") and dislikes ("D'oh"). However, I feel some of these things are just placed inside to make the book seem more full and deserving of $15. But, overall, I was very happy with the purchase and, as I stated earlier, I feel it is an essential for a big "Simpsons" fan.

Why does opera exist as a form? Why do people attend operas, and listen to them? Why should you do so? This classic, brilliant book by Kerman makes the case clearly and strongly.
Opera is drama; beyond the staged spectacles and emblambed warhorses that seem to draw the biggest audiences, opera exists to convey drama, especially the drama of interior actions, emotions and existence. This is why characters are singing, not merely speaking.
Kerman uses the examples, in case study form, of arguably histories greatest operas to point out why the form exists and thrives, and also what makes a work good, and what makes one fail. He begins with Monteverdi and ends with 20th century works like "Wozzeck" and "The Rakes Progress," while also covering Verdi, Wagner, Mozart. His chapter on Mozart's operas is one of the greatest pieces of musical critical thinking that has been written, it explains the greatness of Mozart as an opera composer and also the near-greatness, and flaws, of "Don Giovanni" and "Cosi fan tutte." Kerman also points out what some popular works fail as drama, and thus as opera.
This is the single best work to introduce listeners to the form. Highest recommendation.

Hard read.
Thanks to Haifa reviewer, I will persist since I share the same view with the the author. Opera can be deadly boring without the hope and fear of 'will he win?' 'will he fail?' of drama. Deadly.
Da Ponte spent a lot of time on Cherubino popping in and out of that chair. The other guys cannot just stand around and sing about different things with him lurking back there.
Even if the roulette wheel may be fixed, it is the only wheel in town. This is all there is out there on opera as drama.
The author may often be obscure but once you penetrate the foliage, he is dramatic.

The comon view of opera is recitative=drama, arias=music, and therefore not drama. Kerman makes a different (and therefore genuine) claim. he says that in opera the music IS the drama. To illustrate this, he enters a thorough venture in the world of opera, from the first masterpiece - Monteverdi's "orfeo" to wagner and modern operas. The work includes a discussion of the works of such giants as verdi and mozart, and also a critical look at the Leitmotive technics. Kerman is imaginative, provocative, write in a clear language. altough the book demands a background in opera appreciation. It does not demands a musical background. To some it is almost "the bible" of opera understanding. A master achievement.

Nearly a year ago, I bought Never Check E-mail in the Morning and implemented the practices prescribed throughout the book into our busy real estate office. We were drowning in in our crazy workloads, and struggling under the pressure of always being available to our clients. With e-mail and BBs you can never turn off, especially in real estate where it's completely client-based. Morgenstern's techniques really revolutionized the way we did business and helped us to better manage clients' needs and our own sanity. Her strategies are so practical and address all the problems of working in a 24/7 global market. I definitely recommend it!
A different approach to organizing for efficiency.......2007-06-28
I read this book with some trepidation since I've read lots of organizing and efficiency books over the years. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this one, since it offers nine "competencies" that all should master, and number one is "Embracing your work/life balance". With this as the foundation, she builds all other competencies on this one. So, when discussing competency three (Choose the Most Important Tasks) or competency five (Control the Nibblers), they aren't described as in typical efficiency/organization books. Typically, these types of tasks are encouraged to allow us to 'get more done', but in this book, taking control of these types of issues is encouraged to allow us to achieve the ultimate goal of work/life balance, instead of making us more efficient cogs in the corporate wheel.
A nice approach, and well done.

This book begins with a questionaire to rate your level of organization at work. I filled it out, scored it, and promptly donated it to my library. I am obviously more organized within my work environment than at home. Only buy this book if you are a mess at work and unable to complete projects on time.

This book gushes of leftovers. It is a very wordy read and doesn't get to any practical sort of information until the latter half, most of which is not only a repeat of earlier books, but also common sense stuff (this coming from someone who doesn't instinct-wise have a firm grasp on time management) that i have gleaned from many other sources, and in a more concise format. although her other books are great, i don't recommend this one.

I bought this book for myself, expecting to find some useful advice to help me organize my day a little better and to stay focused on priorities. I have been in management for 12 years and I expected this book to offer some new insights into time management and other daily challenges. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed and struggled to find some useful advice within the first half and have since put it down.
The book seems to target a junior audience with a certain type of personality that is more focused on fitting in and accommodating others, rather than those focused on leadership and results.
The book itself feels really cheap. I is printed on that cheap news-print paper like those crossword puzzle books.
