Coin Clinic : 1,001 Frequently Asked Questions.......1999-12-23
This book was a little out dated and not very fluent reading. Might be good for a beginner, many of the questions were redundant.
A comprehensive survey of accurate numismatic information........1997-11-15
Alan Herbert addresses questions from the most fundamental to the most esoteric questions concerning numismatics. His answers are generous, eloquent and, above-all-else, precise. This is a MUST have addition to any numismatic library.

Book Description
Bucky Katt is a rather obstinate Siamese who constantly battles his "owner" Rob for control of their home. Satchel Pooch, the Labrador-Shar-pei mix who's sweet and lovable, makes a nice lackey for Bucky. Bucky knows he's smarter than everyone else; it's just a matter of convincing the rest of the world. Satchel always tries to do the right thing but very often ends up the brunt of Bucky's antics. Rob Wilco is a bachelor trying to regain household domesticity. Together, this seemingly typical threesome gets into some less-than-typical but hilarious situations. There's never a dull moment at the Wilco residence.
Get Fuzzy, featured in over 500 newspapers worldwide, is one of the most highly lauded cartoons in the country. The National Cartoonists Society named it Best Comic Strip of 2002. Its sidesplitting humor and hilariously illustrated facial nuances appeal to animal lovers everywhere. Bucky and Satchel's words and expressions are what we all picture our beloved pets saying and doing.

Get this book!.......2007-04-12
I laughed; I cried; I spit up my tuna! A bunch of old favorites, plus a lot that I had forgotten. Hurry and order, before Darby Conley retires, or whatever those cartoonists do when they burn out...
Darby has done it again.......2007-02-13
This is a typical collection of strips, but if you love "Get Fuzzy" (I do) you'll love this.
Get Fuzzy is too funny!.......2007-02-10
this book is so good that i re-read it again for old times sake! if i need a laugh or smile i just pick a randomn page and read the current comic strip. this is by far the best work of darby conley yet!
Scrum Bums - Classic Conley.......2007-01-18
As with all previous Get Fuzzy collections, this one serves up more antics of our favorite trio .... the only thing I miss is the full color on the Sunday strips, other than that no complaints and as always, Conley delivers cutting edge wit throughout this collection. A must have for any Get fuzzy fan or anyone who is not familiar with his work I would recommend giving any in this collection a chance.
A Get Fuzzy Reading Guide.......2007-01-17
I won't go into how fantastic this comic strip is, but it is easily my favorite comic strip of all time. :)
For the uninitiated, there are 6 collections so far and three treasuries (each treasury is two collections put together). Collection #7 is on the way.
In chronological order, the collections are:
1. The Dog is Not a Toy: House Rule #4
2. Fuzzy Logic: Get Fuzzy 2
3. The Get Fuzzy Experience
4. Blueprint for Disaster
5. Say Cheesy: A Get Fuzzy Collection 5
6. Scrum Bums
7. I'm Ready for My Movie Contract: A Get Fuzzy Collection (not yet released)
The treasuries are:
1. Groovitude (encompassing collections 1 and 2).
2. Bucky Katt's Big Book of Fun (encompassing collections 3 and 4).
3. Loserpalooza (encompassing collections 5 and 6).
I do not personally have both the collections and their corresponding treasuries (I have one or the other) so I cannot compare them to tell you if anything is added/omitted in the treasuries. However, I believe that the treasuries contain the Sunday comics in color, whereas the collections contain the Sunday comics in black and white (the daily strips are black and white in both sets of books). I can say that these comics are beyond hilarious, and I would highly recommend them to pet lovers/haters of all ages. :)

Customer Reviews:
Saints Preserve Us!.......2007-07-24
It's a great little book. It has more infomation about the Saints than you thought to ask. It's only slightly irreverant in spots, the rest is just interesting information and you find yourself reading it out loud..."Hey everyone, listen to this..." I was disappointed that all of the Saints are listed and then what they are patron of, how they were martered, etc. It would have been nice to be able to look up the topic that they were Patron Saints of, maybe an index or something. As it is you have to read through the Saints in alphabetical order to find what they are the Patron of. All in all, I give it a thumbs up.
yeah its funny but i wish they researched more.......2005-04-22
I can understand the humor the authors were trying to put into the book but in truth I really wish they knew what they were talking about. For example: the patron saint of young girls is not who they say - its Saint Agnes and or Saint Joan of Arc. They have a Saint Bessa in their book, there isn't a saint bessa. I double checked everything against a REAL saints book. There is a Saints Bessas but the stories aren't even simiular.
Like I said, I understand where the humor is coming from but so much of their information is made up is what made me laugh. But in truth it was just sad that the authors showed their ignorance and how into themselves by writting this book and thinking they can make changes where there is none needed and that they know more then anyone who actually has read any other saint book on the shelves. So many of the Patrons are mislabel and quite a few made up it, it was just sad. I mean, how can you not even say Saint. Joan of Arc is the patron of anything?
Funny & informative, but not for the extremely reverent.......2004-10-08
As some of the previous reviews have indicated, this is not exactly an appropriate book for 1) those who take their saints VERY seriously; and 2) those who are trying to educate their youngsters about the lives of saints. Addressing the second group, I might point out that the only times I have seen this book in bookstores it was shelved in the humor section rather than the religion section, and that in itself should be a pretty clue. I suppose some libraries might shelve this in the religion section, but a quick perusal ought to reveal the gentle irreverence found throughout the book.
For those Catholics who enjoy laughing at some of the more admittedly absurd aspects of Church history, this book will be a real hoot. It is in no way definitive, but it does have an impressive number of rather obscure saints listed. There is humor aplenty to be found here, but one will also at times encounter some rather incisive commentary on how the Church infrastructure has developed over the centuries, and also on some of the politics that is sometimes involved in the canonization process.
As a reference guide it has its limits, but if you just need the basics (patron saints for nations & professions, which saints you should invoke for which ailments, and which saints get which days) this book does a pretty good job of covering what you might need.
Remember to avoid this book like the plague if your religious sensibilities are easily offended. You have been warned.
Informative but...........2004-09-03
I am so glad that I checked this book out from the library rather than buying it.
Although this book was informative the dry wit they inserted into nearly every saint's bio was not needed and not welcomed by me. A little humor is a good thing and I love a good dose of dry wit, but to poke fun at saints is another thing altogether.
Usually the prospective buyer of a book about saints is looking for strength, guidance and help. They don't want to read sarcastic comments on each saint.
If you are someone that is looking for a good and informative book on saints you might be disappointed in the authors' attitude as I was.
What Fun!.......2001-12-10
Although not every saint is listed here there are a lot of saints in this book! The blurbs on each saint are short and easy to read. They are interesting and informative. I appreciated the lists in the back fo the book that told me what saint was my birthday saint, my name saint, and other patron saints I might have based on career, nationality etc. A neat little book.
Book Description
New Chinese Cinemas analyzes the changing forms and significance of filmmaking in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong since the end of the Cultural Revolution, with a particular emphasis on how film comments on the profound social changes that have occurred in East Asia over the past two decades. Considering in detail both conservative and progressive stances on economic modernization, it also demonstrates how film has been an important formal structure and social document in the interpretation of these changes. The essays collected here, which were specially commissioned for this volume, also offer extended analyses of the important trends, styles, and work that define Chinese filmmaking in the 1980s.

Book Description
A revealing emotional memoir of the last six years of the composer's life when the author, then a young organist, volunteered to help the blind and partially paralyzed Delius to continue to compose.
Customer Reviews:
Must-read for a Delius lover.......2007-10-02
Have read other bios of Delius, but this is as close to that enigmatic, exasperating genius as you can get. Fenby is an excellent writer, as well as being (obviously) a very talented musician. I confess I was moved to tears at a couple of points in the book. Would also highly recommend Ken Russell's outstanding film, "Song of Summer," which was made from this book, with Fenby's collaboration.
A memoir to treasure.......2007-07-11
This is a truly remarkable story that will appeal, whether or not the reader has any interest in 'serious' music. Fenby brings to life the atmosphere of tension that prevailed in the home of Frederick Delius, a self-absorbed egotist. Although his attitude to the then-blind and paralysed composer bordered on reverence, Fenby never loses his clear-headedness when assessing Delius' faults and idiosyncrasies.
This is a wonderfully-written book that shows Fenby to have been both sensitive and extremely tough. He had to be both to deal with a unique and difficult genius like Delius. The author was fortunate to enter a milieu that brought him into close contact with some of the great names in the music world of the late 1920s and early 30s: Edward Elgar, Peter Warlock, and Percy Grainger. His portraits of these and other musical luminaries are charming and insightful.
Although it was my love of Delius' music that drew me to this book, I found 'Delius as I Knew Him' most rewarding for its insights into its author, who was clearly a good and selfless man.
An Amazing Book on Music and Life.......2007-01-22
When he learned that the famed composer Frederick Delius was blind and crippled but still wished to finish a number of musical pieces, the young English organist Eric Fenby offered to go to France and aid him. What happened was very unique. Fenby and Delius learned to work with another despite Delius' very strong personality and generally cranky attitude and differences over music, religion (Delis was a disciple of Nieztche while Fenby was a Christian) and outlooks on life. Fenby brings out the best in Delius and helped him complete his work.
Fenby offers a biographical sketch of Delius and leaves a strong impression of what the composer was like at the end of his life. He also offers a detailed description of how they worked together. Even though I have no background in music, I was able to follow this part of the book. Fenby also offers some ideas of what the place of Delius in history will be and one is suprised by how fair and detached he is.
For fans of Delius, this book is excellent. But it may be more rewarding for those wishing to understand the power of a genius as well. Still, it may be most rewarding for those struggling with loved ones in poor health or dying. As the composer's own "Songs of Sunset" and "Songs of Farewell" remind us, there is much beauty even in the twilight.
This is a book that reveals two great souls; Frederick Delius and Eric Fenby. There can be no better words of praise for a memoir.
Book Description
Acrostic puzzles lift word game fans beyond crosswords to the next level. Just dust off your memories of great writers and philosophers, and add today's movie stars and sports heroes. Each of the 40 puzzles features three simple steps, starting with treating the clues just like crosswords. Next, you fill in the empty boxes with words that complete a quote from the book. Fortunately, you can figure out answers you don't even know from the clues provided, so the more you play, the more informed you become! Finally, you read the first letters of the answers to read the author of the quote and its source. You'll have fun, even as you learn.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Disappointing.......2007-05-13
I should preface my comments by stating that I am both a Mensan AND a long-time solver, constructor and editor of acrostic puzzles. Even though each puzzle is graded from one to four stars for level of difficulty, experienced solvers should have no problem with any of these. The puzzles themselves (quotation and word list) are interesting and feature a number of literary and movie/TV references. But, while the puzzles are of average length (85 to 115 characters), each one is spread out over two full pages. It would have been an easy matter to print one puzzle per page, thus giving us 80 puzzles rather than the 40 published here. Also, I believe most solvers would prefer an entire book geared to their solving level, e.g., all easy for beginners, and all challenging for experienced solvers. This book will cause some solvers to lose interest. Experienced solvers would do better to purchase a book of puzzles by Charles A. Duerr.
Thumbs down.......2006-08-22
For a product attributed to Mensa, this is much too easy
a set of acrostics. Please update to a tougher level next time.
Good but not great.......2006-03-25
These puzzles are presented with ratings of one to four stars for difficulty. I found the one star through three stars about the same, and not too difficult. I can not do any of the four stars. These puzzles have a lot of current topical references.
A Different Perspective.......2005-10-26
I thought the one-star review was far too harsh (and unnecessarily sarcastic). And I'm not sure it's a valid criticism of any collection of crossword or acrostic puzzles to simply dismiss them as too easy. Too easy for whom? People vary in their skill level. Some solve the Sunday New York Times crossword in 15 minutes; others struggle for hours. Both groups enjoy themselves.
Personally, I found the puzzles in this collection to be very engaging. To be sure, some of them are relatively easy (at least for experienced acrostics enthusiasts), but others are certainly not "a piece of cake." The quotes are quite interesting and/or entertaining, and the clues are often refreshingly quirky. I think this collection makes acrostics more accessible to the newcomer, yet is a lot of fun for old hands (at least for this old hand).
I've become something of an "acrostics nut," thanks in part to collections like this one. I gave up on acrostics for many years because I found the puzzles by Thomas Middleton and the like to be just too daunting for the beginner. I developed acrostics skills by working puzzles of increasing difficulty and now I, too, look for the tough ones. This book and Ms. Brown's previous collection are an excellent introduction to an absorbing pastime.
Astounding?.......2005-10-22
I found these acrostic puzzles to be astoundingly unchallenging, especially considering that the book is billed as an "Official Mensa Puzzle Book". The puzzles are rated from one to four stars by difficulty, but even those with four stars are not much of a challenge. The most astounding thing about this book is that Mensa would lend its name to it.

Climbing Mount Everest: dangerous. Hitchhiking in Colombia: very dangerous. Leading through change: perilous. Perilous but possible, say Heifetz and Linsky in their encouragingly practical guide to putting yourself on the line and negotiating the hazards of leadership. As the authors acknowledge, many leadership books are "all about inspiration, but downplay the perspiration." This one doesn't. Leadership is always a risky business, but those risks can be understood and reduced. Effective leadership comes from doing more than the technical work of routine management; it involves adaptive work on the part of the leader, and a willingness to confront and disturb people, promote their resourcefulness, and engage their ability to adjust to new realities. But adaptive change always encounters resistance. Heifetz and Linsky examine four forms of resistance--marginalization, diversion, attack, and seduction--before presenting a number of practical resistance-response skills to nurture and employ. Some are fairly obvious (like developing and maintaining perspective, and holding steady in the midst of change), and others more complex (like thinking politically when dealing with friends, foes, and fence sitters), but shimmering nuggets of insight and practical wisdom can be found in each. The dangers of leadership also spring from within, however, and the book's final section addresses ways to recognize and manage competing "hungers" and learn to distinguish one's roles from one's self. The authors' points are illustrated by the experiences of leaders from all walks of life, making this a useful and inspiring manual for anyone hoping to put themselves on the line and make a difference in the lives of others. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
Every day, in every facet of our lives, opportunities to lead call out to us. At work and at home, in our local communities and in the global village, the chance to make a difference beckons. Yet often, we hesitate. For all its passion and promise, for all its excitement and rewards, leading is risky, dangerous work.
Why? Because real leadership-the kind that surfaces conflict, challenges long-held beliefs, and demands new ways of doing things-causes pain. And when people feel threatened, they take aim at the person pushing for change. As a result, leaders often get hurt both personally and professionally.
In Leadership on the Line, renowned leadership authorities Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky marshal a half century of combined teaching and consulting experience to show that it is possible to put ourselves on the line, respond effectively to the risks, and live to celebrate our efforts. With compelling examples including the presidents of countries and the presidents of organizations, everyday managers and prominent activists, politicians and parents, the authors illustrate proven strategies for surviving and thriving amidst the dangers of leading:
· "Getting on the balcony": stepping back to get perspective while remaining fiercely engaged
· "Thinking politically": keeping the opposition close, but watching your allies, too
· "Orchestrating the conflict": using stress productively to work the issues
· "Giving the work back": putting the responsibility on those who need to make the change
· "Holding steady": maintaining your focus while taking the heat
The authors also address often-neglected aspects of leadership, such as how to manage your personal vulnerabilities, and how to anchor yourself and sustain your spirit through tough times.
Both uplifting and practical, this essential book enables each of us to lead courageously and confidently-without losing ourselves.
AUTHORBIO:
Ronald A. Heifetz and
Marty Linsky are on the faculty at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Heifetz is the author of Leadership Without Easy Answers and Co-director of the school's Center for Public Leadership. Linsky is Faculty Chair of many of the school's executive programs, including Senior Officials in State and Local Government and Leadership for the 21st Century.
Customer Reviews:
Not a bad choice!!.......2007-10-01
This book is an easy read. It does have some real practical ways that its "messages" can be used by leaders. There are many quality quotes and ideas that can be put into place ASAP in your organization.
Leadership on the Line.......2007-09-13
I found the book insightful and enjoyable to read. It gave options for handling business issues that affect a person's leadership credibilty. The examples were clear and related to well known leaders through out history and present day servers of the governnent and service organizations. I would recommend this book to all business people and take charge leaders.
May this book help you survive long enough to do some good.......2007-03-30
Most companies, most organizations are run by managers. They don't really lead to a new and different future, they instead try to manage the business as they found it. Their main concern is this quarter. Next quarter is long range planning. And the quarter after that so far into the future as to not be worth considering.
Perhaps the best examples right now are the American automobile companies. We've known since the first embargo, since the publication of Hubbard's Peak on oil production that we need more efficient cars. So for quarter after quarter they concentrated on full size SUV's and Pickup trucks. Not even a background level effort on getting a hybrid, a 40 mile per gallon car ready to produce.
This book closes with the need for real leaders. We, our country, our world face difficult times requiring fundamental changes in areas like energy, terrorism, global warming and more. We need leaders -- political, religious, and business leaders. As the book ends: 'May you enjoy with a full heart the fruits of your labor. The world needs you.'
Maybe this book can help you survive long enough to do some good.
Solid and earnest advice for passion in leadership.......2006-12-24
"Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive Through the Dangers of Leading" by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky is an unconventional leadership book. Forsaking formulas, Heifetz and Linsky explore the human dimensions of leadership. Through numerous examples drawn from their teaching and consulting work, the authors tell the reader - really implore the reader - to appreciate the fullness of leadership and its impact on others.
The authors' examples and personal philosophy is on the liberal-left side, but much of their advice appears solid and earnest. The challenge for any person reading their book is how to put into practice what the authors suggest. I believe that without at least a few people to whom a leader can turn for counsel, the authors' call to leadership greatness will be forgotten not long after finishing the book.
The book's closing paragraph provides a good summary of the preceding 235 pages:
"Opportunities for leadership are available to you, and to us, every day. But putting yourself on the line is difficult work, for the dangers are real. Yet the work has nobility and the benefits, for you and for those around you, are beyond measure. We have written this book out of admiration and respect for you and your passion. We hope that the words on these pages have provided both practical advice and inspiration; and that you have better means now to lead, protect yourself, and keep your spirit alive. May you enjoy with a full heart the fruits of your labor. The world needs you."
Excellent.......2006-11-06
If you are looking for a book on leadership, this is one to add to your collection. I had trouble putting the book down at times. The book is very well written and I would highly suggest it to anyone. If you have read books on leadership before, you will place this one at the top of your list.
