Book Description
The aesthetics and spirit of popular culture have been increasingly relevant to British graphic designers over the past several decades. Communicate offers a fascinating selection of this innovative work, examining closely the influence of youth culture, pop music, and new wave aesthetics on graphic design during the 1960s and ever since.
Illustrated in full color, Communicate features 350 images that range from classic designs of the sixties to the work of today’s emerging design teams, including record album covers for groups including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Roxy Music; political protest posters; psychedelic concert posters; typeface projects and signage; and designs for books, magazines, and film.
Focusing on work from small, independent studios where creativity, rather than the bottom line, is paramount, the book includes projects by some 60 outstanding designers including Derek Birdsall, Richard Hollis, Neville Brody, Why Not Associates, and Scott King. Contributors to the volume trace how and why British graphic design has developed as it has, and interviews with ten key designers—Julian House, Ian Anderson, and Margaret Calvert among them—provide unique insider views of the design world.

Invaluable.......2004-08-24
If, like me, you cut your photographic teeth on one of the earlier, screw-mounted Pentax cameras (mine was, and still is, an S1a), then this book is utterly invaluable. It comes complete with masses of diagrams and information tables. These are especially useful if you want to use extension tubes or bellows. I still have, and still consult, my 1967, 2nd edition.
The best photography book ever written.......1999-04-10
The Pentax way is without a doubt the finest book ever written on photography. Without overwhelming the reader H. Keppler explains all aspects of picture taking. Whether a novice or a pro this book is a must read for anyone with an interest in taking pictures.

Blue Collar Comedy.......2007-02-08
This book was really funny and a good relaxing read. Especially if you like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.
Sophomoric and Painful.......2006-12-24
I had high hopes for this book. They were dashed. It's mostly a series of "tests" to determine what to do and "letters" about surreally unbelievable situations. For this book, "white trash" implies that burglary is the preferred career, everybody has four or more husbands/wives over time and innumerable dalliances beyond, and any carnal urge results in children who must be taught how to burgle.
It's just not funny, and has nothing in common with Jeff Foxworthy or David Barry writing about similar topics.
A very, very funny read.......2006-06-23
A co-worker of mine strongly recommended "White Trash Etiquette" on a recent business trip, and was kind enough to let me borrow his copy. I read it cover-to-cover in my hotel room, and spent a good chunk of time chuckling at Dr. Verne's musings on life. This is a very, very funny book. It's quite original -- I've seen nothing like it. Dr. Verne shares his wisdom on all sorts of funny issues ranging from scams to sports to love. Dr. Verne's take on life is downright hilarious. This is a great book for a cover-to-cover read, or for someone who just has bits of time and wants to have a quick laugh. This book will definitely put a smile on your face.
Better that getting your car stereo stoled.......2006-06-21
How do?
The name's Dr. Verne Edstrom, Esq. -- literary giant, petty thief, and self-help advisor to the stars. This here's my book.
I wrote it to help all yous trash out there. Say you got an important question, like how to make your fourteen-year-old cousin unpregnant, or who you should kidnap if you're aiming to impress a woman. You think you're gonna ask Dr. Laura about that? Her face would explode and her makeup would catch fire. Pretty soon you burned down eleven states, but you still don't know who you're supposed to abduct.
Me, I was figuring to help folks rise up from under the viaduct so's they could do better robberies, get themselves more marriages, and start living the life of luxury in a nice doublewide where the heat always works and the cupboards is always filled with liquor and ammo.
And if you ain't buying that explanation, here's a better one: I got eight or ten kids. Seeing as how the missus is built like an ore boat, the smart money says she's good for a half-dozen more. So if you don't buy my book, I don't get no money, which means eight to ten kids is gonna be loose on the streets, stealing your car stereo.
And any moron knows a book is cheaper than a car stereo. That's just good financial thinking.
Dr. Verne Edstrom, Esq.

Book Description
Several books have been published about the phenomenon, but here for the first time is an account of its origins. In two parts, the creators themselves discuss the original theater show and the making of the film.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-12-27
This book was very interesting and should definitely be read by hardcore Rocky Horror fans. That said, it is somewhat disappointing to read for two reasons, one being something the authors could help- the other being something they could not.
Almost everyone involved in creating the Rocky Horror Show and its picture show variant seems jaded or pissed off. Money is often the first thing on people's minds, and the reader comes away knowing that the production screwed many people involved, but could come away having learned so much more. Everyone is quick to point out what a huge part they played in creating this legend- the ego is unbelievable. That, however, the authors could not help. They simply took their information and gave it.
My major problem with the book, however, comes from the authors themselves. While it is true that Rocky Horror is a phenomenon, and certainly influential, I found it awfully hard to swallow some of the ideas that they put forth. It is their belief that Rocky Horror *created* punk, which is ridiculous. No doubt it was part of the culture, but no one thing created it. Also, Rocky Horror is listed as the precursor to Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman's "Bat Out Of Hell"- bull. And by the time they're raving about how "Death Becomes Her" is just a rip-off of the RHPS, you're ready to put down your book and read something else.
This is a very decent book. Lots of great information has passed hands through it, and I do recommend it. However, Rocky Horror has never meant influence or changing the world. It has meant the glorification of fun, rock and roll, and sex. It is a fun show spoofing old horror flicks. To go so far about its importance is to deny it's real power: the ability to have a good time.
Not quite done yet, but..........2002-09-06
This is a good book so far. I must admit that I'm not finished yet having only got it 2 days ago but I'm already to page 120-something. It's very interesting; great interviews w/ people I've heard about on Rocky sites and didn't know much about, so this book really helped me. It's amusing. My only complaint would be that everybody kind of seems to dump on Richard O'Brien in this book and I had always liked Riffy so that kind of bothered me, but all in all it's a good book.

Customer Reviews:
beadwork creates beaded rings.......2007-03-08
this book has many wonderful pictures and countless color combo's...easy to follow patterns for any type of beader...worth the purchase. thx.
Great ideas.......2006-01-25
I own many of the Interweave Press Bead book series. Beaded Rings not only gave some good designs, but gave some great ideas to use for my own ring designs. I felt the instructions were easy enough.
As a reference, most cities and states have a bead society. There are also bead stores that have classes and the staff may be able to help with some instruction.
Better Instructions Needed.......2005-07-28
The design selection and pictures were decent, but more detailed instructions are definitely needed, even for an intermediate beader.
Beautiful, Detailed Bead Book* Must Buy.......2005-04-20
I purchased this book when I saw it in a popular Beading Catalog. The book is very detailed and the photos are outstanding. Perfect for the beginner or advanced, long-time beader. I have several pages earmarked and will make. I also purchased the Beadwork Creates Beaded Bracelets and it is just as beautiful. Definately great books for all levels.

Customer Reviews:
Exquisite and artistic bags.......2004-12-13
I agree with other reviewers that this shape of book is not the easiest to read, but I flattened my copy and put a weight on it to hold it open while working... no big deal. It's what's inside that counts!
The 30 exquisite purse and bag designs in the book, shown in full color photographs, are contributed by different artists, and each is extremely unique in its design and method. Several of the purses are knitted, and some are crocheted. Some have strands of beads couched onto fabric. Some are created with peyote stitch or on a bead loom, then sewn together. One is sewn onto a metal purse frame. One I partricularly like has strands of beads glued (using special sticky tape) onto a purchased tote in a gorgeous design. Some are large and shopping-baggish, and others are small amulet bags or clutches. Every one of them is gorgeous, and you will not find anything like them in any store, unless it is an expensive boutique. They look like collectors' items.
There are no quick and easy projects here. They require time, commitment to read through the instructions and follow them step by step, and skill with the hands. The written instructions are fairly easy to understand, but experienced crafters will follow them more easily. There are illustrations, but a few more would be helpful.
The last section of the book shows how to do all the different stitches and techniques used in the projects, but for knitted bags, you will already need to know how to knit. Hand and machine sewing skills are required for some of the projects.
great stuff, bad format.......2004-06-25
I have to first say that the photos and projects in this book, as well as the others in the Beadwork series, are gorgeous. They are not your typical jewelry items: they show unique colors and mixtures and ideas. Love that part. What I hate about the book is the format...it is long and skinny with a tough spine. In other words, extremely difficult to hold, much less do a project from. It's so narrow that the inside page closest to the spine often cuts off certain words. I tried going to office max to have one drilled to be loose leaf, with the spine cut off, but it still makes for awkward work. Why they couldn't make this a full size book with a lay flat spine is beyond me.
Designed to appeal to all levels of beadworkers.......2004-03-05

These aren't just the usual rectangular bags; they are especially notable projects in presenting a diversity of bag styles and designs, from clutches and drawstring purses to wrist bags and market bags. Techniques range from embroidery and loom weaving to bead crochet, with plenty of colorful photos and step-by-step clear instructons.

Customer Reviews:
For Experienced Beaders.......2007-05-20
Nice pictures and interesting designs but this is for the more advanced beader. As a beginner, I've found most of the instructions impossible to follow.
Book Review: Beadwork Creates Beaded Beads.......2007-02-10
I recommend this book to both "newbie" and experienced beaders! Ms. Campbell has done an excellent job assembling a variety of beaded bead projects. The projects are fun and the directions are straightforward. Some of the projects could use more illustrations, but overall, this is an excellent book for getting started! I am also pleased with how quickly Amazon.com delivered my order!
Beaded Beads.......2005-10-25
Nice concise little book with 30 different styles of beaded beads. Well-illustrated, with pretty clear instructions. Some of the instructions could have been a little more detailed, and I would advise only for someone with some experience with the different stitches.
NOT FOR A BEGINER, Still a NICE book 3 & 1/2 Stars.......2005-10-17
The Color throughout the book is inspiring But as I have found with other books by Jean Campell is that she seems to take it for granted anyone who picks up her book is already an experenced beader. I had to put her books away till I DO become someone who can do as she expects. I do not get her magazine for this reason. No clear instructions for a "dummy" like me.
If you do know your beadwork and can follow instructions easily then you will like this book. She does have a chapter of instructions But What I find helpful is pictures of actual hands doing the work "step by step" There are a few magazines that do this and I catch on much faster.
Fast, fun and fabulous.......2004-08-28
BeadWork has created a number of these slim books with tempting pictures and tightly edited instructions. With Beaded Beads, even the beginning beader can have a lot of fun creating usable pieces in a short time.
Jean Campbell deserves a lot of credit for keeping the information to just the facts. Occasionally, one more diagram would be useful, but I'm a slow learner without lots of pictures. The beginner should know that there are two help sections in the back of the book--'Tips' and 'Stitches'.
The sections are a real plus. With these instructions, even a novice bead addict can produce the beads shown, and advanced beaders can move on from these instructions to create their own work.
New projects start on the right page, with the glorious picture on the left. Great layout, type you can read, and a wide variety of projects make this a book you need for your studio. Only change I'd make it to wire-bind the book so that it lies flat when in use. --Q

Taxpayer's Reference Guide.......2006-03-14
Your Income Tax for 2006, by J.K. Lasser
There are two reasons to read this book.
1) You are preparing a paper return and wish to learn more that what is printed in the IRS "Forms and Instructions".
2) You want to read and learn more than what you get from a tax preparer or computer program.
Since your economic activities have tax consequences you should read or browse the relevant sections of this book as it applies to you. Some ignore the tax consequences until its too late. Since most people don't have tax lawyers, and may not be able to get advice on a telephone, or even from the Internet, you need to reference this book as needed. Do not be afraid of the size of this book as most people will not need all chapters.
Part 1 covers the "Filing Basics" and status. Part 2 covers "Reporting Your Income" for wages, salary, other compensation; fringe benefits, dividend and interest income, property sales, property exchanges, retirement and annuity income, IRAs, rents and royalties, loss restrictions, other income. Part 3 covers "Claiming Deductions" for adjusted gross income, standard or itemized deductions, charitable and interest deductions, medical expenses, personal exemptions. Part 4 tells how to compute your taxes, and tax credits. Part 5 tells about "Tax Planning" and should be read by everyone. Part 6, "Business Tax Planning" is important for the self-employed. Part 7 tells about filing your return and the aftermath.
Chapter 47 tells how to file a refund claim or an amended return. [The easiest way to fill in a 1040X is to fill in the new 1040 and then copy the information to the 1040X.] Chapter 48 discusses the possibility of an IRS tax audit so you may be informed and prepared. Page 715 tells about "Suing the IRS for Unauthorized Collection"!
To learn about the history of US tax policy you'll need another book. Sidney Ratner's "American Taxation" is out of print, but you may be able to find another book. Class and sectional differences make politics, and politics make the tax code. Today's income taxes fall more heavily on wage earners compared to the 1862, 1893, and 1916 income tax codes.
Preparing Your 2005 Tax Return (J.K. Lasser).......2006-02-24
Although I am not an accountant, the book is very informative, detailed and seems very complete. It has been a great asset to me as I prepare my 2005 taxes.
Good reference but . . ........2006-02-02
. . . it still takes too much time to do my own taxes. Who wants to spend all that time reading Greek? Tax laws just change way too much! Besides, I was an Education major not Business. I found an alternative option online called ProFaxTax after spending a lot ot time doing Google searches. I'll probably still keep buying the book for reference purposes and to ask intelligent questions of the people at ProFaxTax, but I won't be doing my taxes myself anymore.
