    Book Description

By carving, weaving, and painting their stories into ceremonial and utilitarian objects, Coast Salish artists render tangible the words and ideas that have been the architecture of this remarkable Pacific Northwest Coast culture. The Coast Salish tribes have developed a culture that was and still is shared orally, steeped in the ritual and beauty of storytelling and mythology. Infused with centuries of sacred teaching, these accounts hold the secrets to the spiritual, political, social, and economic well-being of tribal life. As a testament to their cultural resilience, increasing numbers of contemporary Coast Salish artists have embraced the new materials that "progress" has bestowed--glass, concrete, and steel - juxtaposing ancient images with modern materials.

Contemporary Coast Salish Art presents the work of twenty artists, whose work ranges from traditional forms such as basketry and weaving to modern glass sculpture. The artists featured here - including Bruce Miller, Marvin Oliver, Shaun Peterson, and Susan Point, the progenitors of this movement--perpetuate and expand their ancestors' traditions through their lifelong commitment to visually interpret and rejoice in all the manifestations of their culture.

Steven C. Brown contributes a thought-provoking review of the history of Coast Salish culture, incorporating an analysis of its formal elements while placing it in the context of the northern and southern artistic traditions of the region. Barbara Brotherton celebrates the renaissance of the Coast Salish style. Many of the artists describe, in their own words, the Native legends that have inspired their work. The result is a unique and invaluable overview of a vibrant body of work that is both innovative and grounded in tradition.

      Book Description

Native American Salish artist Susan Point did not take up art until she was in her late twenties, but since then has immersed herself in the study of traditional Coast Salish art and culture. She says: "Coast Salish art is relatively unknown to most people today as it was an almost lost art form after European contact-the reason being that Salish lands were the first to be settled by Europeans. Because of this, over the years, I have spent a great deal of my time trying to revive traditional Coast Salish art-and also attempting to educate the public to the fact that there was, and still is, another art indigenous to the central Pacific Northwest Coast."

Point's striking and distinctive art-from jewelry in precious metals to prints, paintings, and monumental pieces in wood and glass-has won worldwide acclaim and a worldwide audience. An innovator with a strong personal style, she likes to express ancestral concepts and designs in media such as glass and bronze as well as the more traditional wood. "In creating my art," she says, "I feel a need to continually express my cultural background and beliefs yet, at the same time, my work continues to evolve with changes both within and outside of my community."

Michael Kew describes the traditional art, culture, and beliefs of the central Coast Salish, which of all the Northwest Coast cultures is among the least familiar to the general public. Because much of the art was closely associated with private religious expression, it was seldom displayed or sold to collectors. Peter Macnair contributes an engaging and enlightening biography that looks at the artistic evolution of Susan Point. Bill McLennan briefly examines the tradition of housepost carving among the Coast Salish and Susan Point's interpretations of these large woodcarvings.

        Book Description

In 1988, a comic strip burst onto the funny pages of America's newspapers with attitude, wit, and a big dose of reality when it comes to family dynamics.

Today, FoxTrot is one of the most popular and lauded strips around.

How Come I'm Always Luigi? is the latest saga of the slightly off-center Fox family, parents Roger and Andy, teenagers Peter and Paige, 10-year-old brainiac Jason, and pet iguana Quincy. This new collection of cartoons continues their mishaps and misadventures as they battle with school, work, video games, and of course, each other.

Anyone who's ever experienced the trying turmoil of family life will relish this latest collection of FoxTrot-a strip that inspires laughs and instant identification like few others.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Make No Bones About it, the Foxtrot Gang is Funny.......2007-02-17

I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.

The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.

5 out of 5 stars How Come I'm Always Luigi? Foxtrot, All Great! .......2007-01-19

I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspicoulsly wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newpaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.

Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed that he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortuantly I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Foxtrot books are a great read!.......2007-01-14

Great book, the newer Foxtrot comics are better-drawn and very funny!

3 out of 5 stars Well, it could have been worse.......2006-08-28

I have been a fan on FoxTrot for a long time, and after reading this I must admit I was slightly disappointed. Yes, the comics were witty and intellectual as always, but I wouldn't say that Bill Amend's true creativity was shown in this new book in the collection. However, it was still a funny read, and I would recommend this to all avid foxtrot fans.

        5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2006-05-03

What can I say? I love Fox Trot and I love Bill Amend.

Another book of funnies from Bill Amend featuring our beloved Fox Trot family.

Again, I love all the comic strips in this book - extremely witty....my only complaing, as always, with most of these types of books is that they are way too short....time to bring on another Treasury in this series.

        Excellent purchase though.

        4 out of 5 stars Warning.......2006-08-29

This was a great book. I picked this up thinking this was the "hitchhikers guide" Douglas Adams. I really enjoyed this book but I think it should be stated this is NOT the 42 guy. So if you're looking for his books, this is not one of them.

3 out of 5 stars Not by the same author as the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series!.......2005-11-27

For people who are fans of Douglas N. Adams the author of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, I would like to warn you that the author of The Prostitue in the Family Tree: Discovering Humor and Irony in the Bible is a different person named Douglas E. Adams. Unlike the famious radical British athiest Douglas N. Adams, E. Adams is an American preacher who is not in any respects a comedian. I hope you do not make the mistake that I made.

4 out of 5 stars The subject matter is worth it.......2003-08-05

As other reviewers have stated, the writing is not all there - the book doesn't seem like a book so much as notes the author would use for a class - but the subject matter is unique and worthwhile. Until there is some other book about tbhe subject (adams or otherwise) this is what we have to deal with, and I'd much sooner take it than leave it.

        1 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2003-06-19

I thought that this would be a great book written by THE Douglas Adams, author of HHG2G and well known atheist. Wow, was I mistaken! Anyway, I've got nothing against this book. I just want to make sure other people don't make the same mistake I did.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Exegetical Resource.......2002-12-14

I wish Dr. Adams had lectured at the seminary I attended. This book is an outstanding addition to the professional preacher's library. It discusses scripture in down-to-earth-language, exegetes passages clearly without excess scholarly fuss, and provides an "alternative" view of some of our favorite biblical texts that is still firmly based in scripture and accurate in interpretation. If your congregation is not primarily consisted of PhD's, you will find this book a very helpful and amusing resource.

Leman and Pentak succinctly present essential people-management principles, wrapped in a delightful story. In my opinion, The Way of the Shepherd captures the essence of Peter Drucker's best thoughts on human capital. I have provided copies for all the managers on my team, and frequently recommend this book to fellow business executives.

This book is an outstanding introduction to anyone already in, or entering into a leadership role. The format is so simple as you are reading a story line throughout, which keeps you captivated to completion. This book is based upon a person entering a leadership role for the first time and the great examples applied to their training allow everyone to relate at whatever level of leadership you are in. Each chapter provides a simple bulletized list indicating the key lessons learned.
After reading this I immediately went through and highlighted several points which I fequently review as a reminder to myself. I liked this book so much that not only do I recommend it to others, I have also bought several copies for my friends, co-workers and even my pastors at my church.
