Book Description
Charles Bernheimer described decadence as a "stimulant that bends thought out of shape, deforming traditional conceptual molds." In this posthumously published work, Bernheimer succeeds in making a critical concept out of this perennially fashionable, rarely understood term.
Decadent Subjects is a coherent and moving picture of fin de siècle decadence. Mature, ironic, iconoclastic, and thoughtful, this remarkable collection of essays shows the contradictions of the phenomenon, which is both a condition and a state of mind. In seeking to show why people have failed to give a satisfactory account of the term decadence, Bernheimer argues that we often mistakenly take decadence to represent something concrete, that we see as some sort of agent. His salutary response is to return to those authors and artists whose work constitutes the topos of decadence, rereading key late nineteenth-century authors such as Nietzsche, Zola, Hardy, Wilde, Moreau, and Freud to rediscover the very dynamics of the decadent. Through careful analysis of the literature, art, and music of the fin de siècle including a riveting discussion of the many faces of Salome, Bernheimer leaves us with a fascinating and multidimensional look at decadence, all the more important as we emerge from our own fin de siècle.

Really Nice Postmodern Criticism..........2004-06-13
This slim volume of exquisite little critical essays is a gem of literary and aesthetic criticism. Bernheimer was dying of cancer when he composed these last pieces, and they were edited and published just after his death. But sickness and death are only marginally reflected in the essays: Bernheimer was an expert of comparative literature, and that is the locus of the book.
He is looking at the phenomenon of aesthetic Decadence which appeared in European literature c.1885-1905. One can argue that Decadence had earlier adumbrations in Poe, Baudelaire, Gautier, and the Goncourts, but their earlier efforts really saw fruition in the period known as the Fin de Siècle.
One can look at the table of contents to see Bernheimer's topics of Nietzsche, Flaubert, Zola, Huysmans, Freud, etc. But what I want to impart is the excellence of Bernheimer's critique: he has a firm handle on what's become known as Postmodern criticism, but he's much more lucid than others who dabble in the genre. He writes a very nice English: he constructs very pellucid texts with lovely language--vocabulary, syntax, and punctuation. And his vision is very clear: he understands what he sees, and he is able to clearly formulate his vision to relate it Au lecteur (to the Reader) in such a manner as to make it easily apprehendable--something too often lacking in Postmodern criticism. Highly recommended for students and scholars of turn-of-the-century literature, culture, and intellectual history.

A great help but use it wisely.......2007-08-01
Doreen has never been a confident public speaker but last summer she was faced with the daunting challenge of delivering a speech in a local debate. 'This house believes that prostitution should be legalised' was never going to be an easy motion to put to a Christian faith-group. Apparently she surmised that the only chance to get the audience on her side would be through the use of humour. Not a bad idea, I'll warrant, but Doreen (physical characteristics aside) has never been a particularly funny woman. I bought this excellent guidebook to help out but sadly I think she failed to exploit its full potential. If she had even glanced over the explanations of word-play, misdirection and irony then it certainly didn't come across. Rather, I believe that she followed in the footsteps of Roy 'Chubby' Brown and confined her research to one particular facet of comedy.
Well, I don't think even Doreen had intended on turning the air quite so blue, but the warm-up gin and tonics went far beyond being a 'calming influence'. I fear that she was egged-on even further by vocal support from the elderly Mrs. Dewhurst. These isolated plaudits were probably not the best way to gauge the sentiment of the room, if one considers that Mrs Dewhurst tends to punctuate even the most leisurely of Sunday sermons with equally raucous cheers. Needless to say, the speech was not met with universal acclaim. Still, technically the debate can't be chalked up as a loss. The melee that broke out (after a gag that would have made Ron Jeremy blush) ended any chances of a civil vote being held.
Do you Speak? Do you Write?.......2007-05-08
...then you should own this book.
The Comic Toolbox reveals the method to the madness of humor. And you'll find immediate applications to anything you create; verbally, visually or in print.
Excellent book for story tellers.......2007-04-26
Breaks down all the elements of not just a comedy story, but for any story. Makes it easy to come up with an interesting dynamic between characters and the plot.
If you are looking for something to help you be funny with friends, or to tell jokes, the concepts can still be applied, but you'd have to keep your friends there long enough for you to build up a funny story.
Worth the money
Highly Recommended.......2006-08-09
As a professional screenwriter and teacher of screenwriting, I can testify that this book offers loads of invaluable advice and wisdom about writing comedy. But as an added bonus, it will help you write almost any kind of screenplay. A treasured addition to my shelf of how-to books.
Real tools to build funny.......2006-05-31
Finally, a book that offers real tools and exercises to help you write humor. After you get the basics, John Vorhaus helps you understand what makes it funny and what slows it down and shows you how to get the laugh instead of just head nods because they reaize you are ironic. I highly reccomend this book for anyone looking to write humor on demand. I would love to see John write a book focused on the Comic Strip and similar short form humor.

An early collection of the popular
For Better or Worse strips, all in black and white. As the introduction states, cartoonist Lynn Johnston "knows that the only thing that hangs heavy on a mother is a toddler.... She knows that cat food is not fatal to small fry, romantic evenings at home are a myth, and a mother's first gray hair is a war wound."

Another Great book ..........2007-03-30
Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.
Overstated situations, but still amusing........2005-01-08
This book is a collection of strips from the syndicated "For Better or For Worse" comic strip. It highlights the trials and tribulations of the modern couple trying to raise children. The father is a dentist, there are two children, a boy and a girl and the main character is an overextended mother. As a single parent, I found many of the overworked parent situations to be overdone, but they were still amusing. Examples are the student teacher conferences, planning a vacation, keeping school supplies safe until school starts and whether or not you have a pet.
If you are married and think that your life is atypical, read this book and smile. Although the specifics may differ, all couples with children must deal with nearly all of the circumstances this couple copes with.
Good, but the later ones get better!.......2004-05-08
For Better or For Worse is like a fine wine, it has gotten better in time! This book was hiliarious, but the drawing style was very rough compared to Johnston's current style. I thought it was a good book, and would recommend it highly to die hard fans.
WE HOPE IT'S MANY OF THOSE DAYS WITH FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE.......2000-12-16
This delightful, reality based strip has set new standards in cartoons. The Patterson bunch contend with every day issues that all readers can identify with, such as a new pet, making time for romantic interludes and running interference for the children. It is a wonderful strip that has brought many smiles to many faces for many years and we hope, many more. Let's keep up more of those days.
One of my favorites.......1997-07-25
I've allways caonsidered "For Better or For worse my favorite cartoon, and this book is one of my favorites. The sibling rivalry, chaotic family reunions and the crazieness of getting a puppy are just some of the things that make this collection a good book. I would recomend it.
Sincerely,
Jessica Holz

Notes of a Longtime Price Fan.......2005-02-11
True fans of Vincent Price don't really care whether or not we're watching something badly made like SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN or some auteur-approved masterpiece like TOMB OF LIGEIA. As long as Vincent Price is in it, hamming it up and acting all others right off the screen we are in hog heaven. It's a strange, fervid fraternity and way back when someone started calling us The Price Club and the name just stuck.
Denis Meikle has given us a book that clears up some of the myths surrounding Price's career, but he seems determined to create a new one, based somewhat on Victoria's great book. His thesis is that the McCarthy hearings and the "graylist" of which Price was the victim made him scared that he would never work again, so that afterwards, from the mid 1950s on, he consented to appear in any piece of schlock if the "price was right." Again and again he evinces this theory to explain, for example, why VP appeared as "Egghead" on TV's BATMAN. Price himself often stated that he wanted money to but more modern art with, but Meikle discounts this simple explanation.
I am the proud owner of a signed copy of Price's awesome book THE ART IN MY LIFE and I think that he indeed loved art and that he wasn't just "running scared" from the HUAC police.
But everyone deserves a forum for their views and Meikle makes a good case for his.
If you love Vincent Price you will love this great book.......2004-03-30
When I was a kid way, way back in the late sixties to the early
seventies I never failed to catch a great Price film on the late night Creature Features. This book is hard to put down.
Dennis Meikle does'nt white wash the Master of Menace, nor present him in any unfavorable light. All of Price's successes
and failings are told here in a very respectful manner. As a
matter of fact there were some parts of Price's life I did'nt want to know. This is the story of a great actor the likes of whom we will never ever see again. Well illustrated. A really
excellent book.
No one like him! Wonderful Tribute to the Master of Menace.......2003-11-29
Vincent Price came into horror films by way of the studio system. His body of work is amazing, and he showed a fine sense of comedic timing in His Kind of Woman, with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell, playing an OTT hammy actor. Later this tough for droll comedy would show in two gems - The Raven and The Comedy of Terrors. However, he really gathered attention in 1952 with House of Wax. After that wonderful performance, it was non stop fun all the way.
Many of his films were for William Castle or Roger Corman, and often considered Drive-In fodder - such as The Fly, The Bat, House on Haunted Hill. It was the series of Poe movies that firmly linked the word horror to Price - and I think it was a term he enjoyed completely. At the time the Corman-Price-Poe series of movies - The Pit and The Pendulum (with Scream Queen Barbara Steele), House of Usher, Tomb of Ligeia, Masque of the Red Death, Haunted Palace (which was really Lovecraft not Poe, but what the hey...) were often dismissed. But looking back, you will see finely crafted horror films that are still a pleasure to what now, with many of Price's wonderful performances.
Even later, he continued to seek out this same spotlight with the campy Theatre of Blood and the Dr. Phibes duo of films or the more serious Cry of the Banshee and Conqueror Worm (one of his most underrated performances).
He scared us with a gentle boo, mesmerising with that voice, thrilled us with the wondrous menacing laugh, enchanted us with his devilish twinkle in his eye...he entertained us cooking fish in his dishwasher on Johnny Carson.
His legacy lives and this is wonderful tribute to the master! Loaded with pictures, it is a must for Price fans.
Long Live Vincent Price.......2003-10-28
As an avid horror fan, I must say Vincent Price is the long-standing king of horror. When I think of horror movies, he immediately comes to mind. Finally, a book that specializes in the work of a true master who truly loved his work. Having recently purchased this, I look forward to mulling through its contents and watching the many films of "The Master of the Macabre." Long live Vincent Price!!!
Long live Vincent Price!.......2003-09-23
I just finished reading this excellent book on Vincent Price. It concentrates just on his work in the horror film genre which is primarly what he is remembered for. Denis Meikle follows Vincent's career chronologically film by film, giving details of the production as well as what was going on in Price's life at the time. While this is not an exhaustive work on this wonderful actor, it makes a great companion piece to his daughter's book "Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography" which covers his personal life and Lucy Chase Williams' excellent "The Complete Films of Vincent Price" which covers all his film output. All together, these tell the story of one of the last true renaissance men. Recommended.

"Over these many years of watching Michael devour books on leadership, ask probing questions of all manner of leaders, and write his daily insights, I see now where it has all led--to a magnificent new book on leadership. If you are passionate about becoming a more effective leader, do yourself a favor and read Power and Persuasion."--Steve Leveen, CEO and Cofounder, Levenger
"Michael Masterson's new book emphasizes vision and effective communication, and, although unconventional at time, his ideas about leadership are unassailable and will be more widely employed. I have made it required reading for everyone at Frank McKinney & Company."--Frank McKinney, bestselling author of Frank McKinney's Maverick Approach to Real Estate Success and Make It BIG!
"I ghostwrote a book on leadership for which I personally interviewed 100 CEOs, many from big-name Fortune 500 companies and leading national brands. But I learned more about leadership by reading Michael Masterson's new book Power and Persuasion than I did from all my interviews with those 100 CEOs combined."--Bob Bly, author of more than 60 books and Director of the Center for Technical Communications

Step by step instructions.......2007-01-11
Well written book that focuses on real life examples and ways of persuading people to help you get what you want. Michael concentrates on what has really worked for him in life and gives you these things in an easy to follow format. Each chapter stands alone so you can take it and apply it in your life then move on to the next chapter and apply that.
Worth the read but if you really want to get the most out of what Michael is teaching you have to apply it.
Power and Persuasion - boring.......2006-06-26
I read the first 3 chapters in this book and was fairly disappointed. I was expecting fresher ideas and presentation. If I can't get at least one new worthwhile idea in the 1st 3 chapters then I loose interest. I also think the bullet-point format was bland and took up too much page space. I'm going to pick up the book again when I have nothing better to read.
Leapfrogging up the Corporate Ladder.......2006-05-12
I read Michael Masterson's EarlytoRise e-zine at least once a week, more when I have time. So I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from Power & Persuasion. And it didn't disappoint. Without knowing a lot about Masterson's specific career path, I can guess that he's had a great number of successes in a number of different fields. I say that because the ideas and principles that he presents for persuading others seem to transend specific job situations, so I can only assume that he's used them within any business situation in which he's found himself. Obviously, if you have the ability to persuade others, you'll have a great source of power at your fingertips. Having never been one to try to browbeat anyone into taking my side in a discussion, I look forward to putting the more subtle aspects of Masterson's persuasion techniques to work for me. It'll be interesting to see where I am career-wise, in a year's time, to see if I have indeed been able to leapfrog up the corporate ladder putting Masterson's Power and Persuasion to work for me.
Nothing really new here.......2006-05-11
First of all, in this day and age how can a book be published with this many grammatical errors!!! C'mon Masterson, at least hire a great editor for the second printing, if it makes it that far. As far as the material goes, same ole stuff you read in every other leadership book, just different stories. I'm not mad that I bought this book, just sorta bored with all the same stuff out here. I'm sure without your e-zine this book would never have made it this far, stick to what you know best, marketing.
One of the best time management and leadership authors wrote this book!.......2006-05-04
Michael Masterson is one of my favorite writers. His book "Power and Persuasion" hits the nail on the head when he describes the characteristics of successful business leaders (especially in chapter five). He puts into words what I have learned and believed for years. I found his thoughts about establishing communication routines and following up on goals to be on target. Too many leaders try to micromanage their employees and business associates. His comments about true delegation and recognizing different expectations of individuals increase both the leader's power and the power of those they associate. It takes very little time to acknowledge someone's accomplishments while increasing that person's self-worth. The result is a strong business team. Of course a regular routine of firing the weakest performers is best when needed. Pruning your hierarchy usually strenthens your business. And hopefully, those individuals will learn from the experience and succeed in another business. It is impossible to be liked by everyone, but strong leaders are usually respected. "Power and Persuasion" is a must read!!! Buy it now!!! I know several leaders who will receive Michael Masterson's book as gifts. Some who already have these skills and some who should learn and practice these successful business traits.
