Customer Reviews:
good copy.......2007-09-29
I am satisfied with my purchase and have no complaints. I got my order in good time and in good condition.
Excellent resource book.......2007-03-29
As a practicing architect, I am often invited to meet with kids to talk about the profession or what I do. This was an excellent resource to help me bridge the "generation" gap and find ways to talk about architecture and the drawing aspects of it with kids of all ages. It's one of the best books I've bought in years.
A terrible disappointment..............2002-10-17
As one who has attended the oldest art school in United States, I feel I should mention some wonderful books that are available. For the very best in professional technique, there is Nicolaides The Natural Way to Draw. For absolute joy, encouragement and technique in drawing, there is Dvorak's Experimental Drawing. For the spiritual aspect, love of life and technique, there is Franck's The Zen of Seeing. All three books are treasures for anyone who really yearns to learn how to draw.
Not what I thought it was.......2001-12-17
I was expecting a book weighted toward doodling; idea-generation; capturing thoughts on paper. I was disappointed to find it more oriented toward graphic artists or illustrators. Lots of topics like composition, perspective, etc. And the sample sketches and examples are way way more professional than I could ever hope to be. Bottom-line, I found it more oriented toward illustrators or artists than toward thinkers who want to doodle.
Really great stuff to get you moving with visual thinking!.......1999-10-15
I have always enjoyed reading - and playing around with the ideas from - Kurt Hank's books. I have all his books, which include Rapid Viz, Design Yourself, The Change Navigator, Wake Up Your Creative Genius, Up Your Productivity.
Like his other books, this book is very well-illustrated, conceptually & graphically, with the following key chapters:
- Introduction: Anyone Can Draw;
- Methods, Tools & Techniques;
- Rapid Visualisation;
- Ideation;
- Notation;
- Communication;
It's primary focus is to help you, the reader, in re-establishing drawing in your life...as a tool to solve problems, create new ideas & assist communication.
Packed with ideas, games, puzzles & exercises, it provides a step by step approach to the practical strategies of visualising, expressing & communicating your ideas - and concepts - on paper.
I must say: It is really great stuff.

Peter has the eye!.......2003-10-24
I just started drawing and painting figures after years of landscape and bought this book. It has guys, girls, prone, sitting, standing and the contrast is managed at all times so you do not have to deal with shadows or glare. One of the drawings I did using a pose in the book was just accepted in a juried show, what more can you say?

Book Description
The week it hit the stores, Weirdos from Another Planet! touched down at No. 1 on Walden's and B. Dalton's bestseller lists and No. 2 on the New York Times bestseller list. How do you top such success? With The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes, a large-format treasury of the cartoons from Yukon Ho! and Weirdos from Another Planet! (including full-color Sunday cartoons) plus a full-color original story unique to this collection. Its reservation on the top of the national bestseller lists is already confirmed! Millions of readers have responded ot the tremendous talent of Bill Watterson. His skill as both artist and writer brings to life a boy, his tiger, and the imagination and memories of his ardent readers. After five years of syndication and six bestselling collections, The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes picks up where The Essential Calvin and Hobbes left off - bringing more of the irresistible antics of Calvin and his magical sidekick Hobbes to millions of eager fans around the globe. As the strip's phenomenal success witnesses, Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes is the authority on humor.
Customer Reviews:
C&H FTW.......2007-09-12
If you love C&H, you'll like this book. For me, Calvin is like pepperoni pizza... when it's good, it's really good, and when it's bad, it's still good.
More Calvin.......2006-10-19
This book combines material from both Yukon Ho! and Weirdos From Another Planet!. Perfect to read with a blanket and a cup of tea on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It lifts my spirits up and makes me laugh, even when there's no one around. Really, that could be said about any Calvin and Hobbes book, though!
The creator is a God........2004-11-03
Unfortunately, I say it rather cynically.
My, there are so many monsters peopling this strip. The kid's a monster. His parents are monsters. The tiger's a monster. The teacher's a monster. The babysitter's a monster. And the only character who's not a monster (and more of a victim) is naturally enough, a young girl who is never bad or gets into any trouble. And the strip, while a rugrat's fantasyland, also smacks of extreme adolescent rebellion.
The strip is so overrated even after its demise a decade ago that it's been ensured that no cartoonist alive or yet to be born would ever create a strip as well-worshipped as it is for all eternity to come. So why not just remove the whole comic section from the news for good?
A walk through someone else's imagination.......2004-07-25
Calvin is a beam of light, a dinosaur, Spaceman Spiff, a pollster on the election of new parents, a robotic explorer from Jupiter (in search of chocoloate) -- well lots of things. He's all the best and all the worst a boy about five can be, and that covers a lot of ground.
If the others around him never quite see things Calvin's way, that's really not his problem. Hobbes will always understand, and generally offer some understated commentary on events. I prefer not to say too much about Hobbes. It's really best if you let him introduce himself.
This book is a treasury of daily and sunday color strips. It captures a part of one of the best strip comics ever. If you already know C&H, you'll surely want this collection. If you missed the strip when it was still in the papers, this will give you a wonderful introduction.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood, and Calvin offers his for your enjoyment.

Another anthology of laughter.......2004-05-30
Whether the collection is the "Indispensible" or "Essential" or "Quintessential" Calvin and Hobbes, it doesn't really matter. Watching this hyperactive, hyperimaginative child and his willing though wise accomplice, Hobbes, take on evil babysitters, Susie Derkins, the class bully and all creatures (real or imaginary), is a pleasure and laughter without stop. "The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes" is another in a long list of the great comic work of Bill Watterson. This is an indispensible/essential/quintessential collection for all Calvin and Hobbes and humor fans!

Book Description
Those who thought being Irish was about parades, shamrocks, and green beer get a peek into a decidedly deeper culture in Joe Keefe's edgy and hilarious book Being Irish...Contemplations On The Nature And Meaning Of The Irish Race. Whether it's eating, drinking, loving, or learning, the Irish experience - as Keefe explains it - is shaded in innumerable ways by family, faith, and a fair sense of knowing exactly where you stand. All of this makes for a rollicking good read, in short bits and big letters for the Irish among the readership.

Laughingly Irish.......2002-02-17
This book is a definite lol (laugh out loud). Having grown up with a wacky group of Irish sibs and relatives, I couldn't help myself. Even now, I am smiling. Have a great chuckle with this book!

Customer Reviews:
Want to Rent an Inspiring Movie and Not Sure What to Choose?.......2004-02-08
I am always looking for recommendations of those movies I truly do not want to miss, especially when I am renting and overwhelmed by the vast array of movies on the shelves at my local rental outlet.
This unique title is chock full of suggestions so that I can look at movies to fit my mood and inspire me accordingly.
They list "Antianxiety" movies (I was thrilled to see quotes from Adaptation: Charlie Kaufman as played by Nicholas Cage: an excellent movie!; movies about finding that significant love in your life, movies to inspire your meaning in life.... and much more.
Sidebars from the authors help us get to know each of them better and the quotes from movies are priceless.
They also have a unique section called "Junk Food for the Soul" which gives warning for movies which are wayyyyy to fluffy without much substance... and recognizing sometimes those very same movies taste so good, they are worthy of the investment of time.
Some new movies I had not considered before reading this book are "School Ties" (an early Brandon Fraser, Matt Damon film) and "The Misfits" a 1960 classic.
In fact, the only weakness I really saw was in the selection of movies. There were a lot of really current movies -- and I know there are lots of wonderful "oldies and goodies" although these may be less available for rental at our local rental stores.
I also saw from reading the back of the book that these authors have a slew of other movie titles. I am guessing they are all worth scanning.
Customer Reviews:
Book is for band directors but ensemble members will gain insight........2007-01-13
Another book with a great concept: include a DVD which shows what's inside the book. Here Dr. Willie Hill is shown in a clinic type format demonstrating to high school jazz band participants how to play jazz standards. The DVD is a documentary format of a live classroom setting of real students being taught how to solo. Dr. Hill also instructs the 4-piece rhythm section, telling the musicians to listen to the drummer's accents. Both a high school ensemble and a college ensemble are represented. This book also ties in with a great video set that shows the role of the drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards in the rhythm section called "Drums In the Rhythm Section" (also Piano, Bass, Guitar) with top caliber players like Steve Houghton.
The book does a good job of presenting jazz in a methodical way. It starts with jazz history and influential players. It then moves on to the development of jazz instrumentation and jazz styles. As to not overwhelm the novice, a blues tunes, "Billie's Bounce", is used as a starting point. Helpful pointers like scales, modes, and arpeggios are explained and written out. Since classical musicians will only be familiar with standard grand staff notation and unfamiliar with simplified jazz charts, time is taken to explain the anatomy of a chart. The book's expensive but one you'll keep in the library for reference, especially if you plan on being a jazz band director. Also, as a supplemental addition, get "Approaching The Standards" by the same author to practice what you've learned here.
Outstanding Resource.......2006-03-19

Product Recommended.......2000-04-05
I'm a student at a Canadian High School. I really wanted to go to school in the US, so I got this book. I was really going into it not knowing what to expect. This product really helped. I went into the test confident. This is a great product for people not knowing what to expect going into the test.
This book talked about how to save time. It also coaches you how to pay attention to detail (A problem I have)ie: Words to watch for in the question. Great book!

URU Ages Beyond Myst.......2004-05-26
Not too clear. Prefer the way it was done in Myst. Beware! if you download URU updates, this book becomes obsolete. Correct me if I'm wrong PLEASE!!!
Official Travel Guide.......2003-11-22
I got my Prima Official Travel Guide today. It's the Uru: Ages Beyond Myst strategy guide, but it's written as a sort of travel journal by a "former" writer of game guides whose life has changed dramatically following his experience.
It's written with a good knowledge of the game and its history, and has a good synopsis of the background, which will make a novice to the series appreciate Uru all the more. The style is pleasantly witty. Even the forward from the editor, and the "advertisement" paid for by the DRC at the back of the book, are in character and amusing.
The book has tons of game information. It contains the text of all the notebooks, journals, and letters in the game. There are many snapshots that look like Polaroid pictures taped or paperclipped into the book. The text is in a handwriting font that isn't too hard to read. Of course, there are also maps, and descriptions and pictures of how to do all the puzzles.
In my opinion, it's a real shame that the entire interior of the book is done in black and white. That's the only fault I find with it. If it were all done in color, it would awesome! I'd certainly be willing to pay more for a full color edition!

Customer Reviews:
I love this book!!.......2007-09-29
I have the book on cassette tapes and I listen to the tapes A LOT! I would recommend reading or listening to this book several times. It has the potential to be life-changing...really!
Mmm... Déjà vu (but his theory is cool).......2007-08-11
This book seems like a repetition of the firs one (Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity) which was very interesting and it helped me a lot. If you want to learn his theory about edit and organize todo list, you better buy that one.
Pretty good.......2007-06-16
This book was not bad. I almost gave it 4 stars, but there are some other great books out there. I have already read Allen's 'Getting Things Done', so some of the material was rehash for me. Overall, I think the book does what it sets out to do, and it does contain some useful tips.
Read This Book.......2007-06-08
I have not read Mr. Allen's "Getting Things Done," but I'd like to read everything he's written now. I've read many time management books...and I've read many philosophy books. This is excellent in both spheres. The approach to time management is so much deeper than "List To-Do's and prioritize A-B-C"; it led me to think very deeply about time and perception, and what we do with our minds moment by moment. I love his concept of "psychic RAM" - and the idea that the more clogged it is, the less effective we are. This actually echoes Julia Cameron's practice of the "Morning Pages" in "The Artist's Way," and Brenda Euland's idea that writing everything down, EVERYTHING, produces a clear, flowing stream of thought. When Mr. Allen talks about writing everything down, he is talking about much more than a to-do list. This is not the same old time management guru stuff.
His style, too, is appealing. None of that bright, chirpy tone of many self-help books, and none of the "weightiness" of Steven Covey. You hear a real person talking.
Finally, there are the sidebar quotes, which are extremely wide-ranging and well-chosen.
If you've read GTD, you can probably skip "Ready for Anything".......2007-03-14
Key points:
1. One should read Allen's "Getting Things Done" (GTD) before reading "Ready for Anything" (RFA).
2. If you've read GTD, you can probably skip RFA. It reinforces some core GTD principles, often in a mind-numbingly repetitive fashion (which can be a good teaching style), but also tries to fill in some of "The Vision Thing" content absent in GTD. Unfortunately, Covey is better than Allen in addressing "The Vision Thing." Together, GTD plus Covey's "7 Habits" and "First Things First" (FTF) make an interesting collection.
3. RFA suffers from the same design and layout issues I found with GTD: the "inspirational quotations" in the margins destroy the reading flow as they push into the space occupied by the main text. The quotes distract the reader from the main text due to their intrusion into such and a lack of white space. IMO, there are too many inspirational quotes. Allen should have simply started each chapter with one relevant quote, ala Covey's "7 Habits..." I've noticed that some of the inspirational quotes are recycled from GTD and are sometimes better than the associated essay in RFA. To see how to place quotes or references in the margins of a book's pages, Allen should review any of Edward Tufte's books, such as "Beautiful Evidence."
4. There are obvious parallels throughout RFA to ideas in Covey's "7 Habits" and "First Things First." However, there's no mention of Covey in the book (and he's only cited once in GTD via an inspirational quote). Both Covey and Allen have interesting things to teach, but it seems Allen eschews any reference to Covey despite the obvious parallels to anyone who has read both authors. In some cases, it seems Allen is taking pot-shots at Covey ideas, such as his reference to the "quadrant matrix" on page 22 of the paperback edition of RFA, an obvious reference to Covey's Urgent/Important matrix in FTF.
5. RFA makes no attempt to indicate when the included essays were originally published in Allen's newsletter. It would be interesting to know when the original essay was published. I'm sure they've been edited and updated for the book, but some connection to their stated original publication dates might be helpful in understanding where Allen was in his personal journey at the time he wrote the essay.
6. The "By the way..." items at the end of each RFA chapter may be valuable for readers who've not yet asked themselves some of the deeper questions or who are struggling with their GTD implementation.
7. IMO, the GTD Workflow chart, in a revised form in RFA, still needs work. Perhaps they should not try to fit it on one page: use a two-page spread or, even better, a fold-out that one can also tear out. The chart would benefit from the help of someone who knows how to draw flowcharts.
8. The paper in the paperback edition of RFA is of a cheap, inferior quality compared to that used in the paperback edition of GTD. To me, it feels like cheap newsprint.
9. RFA lacks an index. A book like this, without an index, is most unfortunate, indicating perhaps a rush job to capitalize on GTD interest by recycling old essays. Recycling content for additional profit is a good idea, but any book like this should include an index.
