If you are passionate about Munch's art, you'll enjoy this immensely. If you deal professionally in fine prints, this will be a substantial addition to your working library. For all others, it's too much and not enough.

This remarkable book is a complete catalog of prints from a very prolific printmaker - over 700 of them, from a career spanning 50 years. Each one is reproduced, B&W or color, in readily recognizable form. When significantly different states or inkings are known, each variation is shown. Thorough notes accompany each, not just medium, size, and date, but information about where it was printed and displayed, and sometimes even about the plate, block, or stone from which it was printed. Indexing, notes, and supporting material are meticulous. This volume certainly meets its goal: to represent Munch's total output of prints, to the extent that very fine scholarship possibly can.

This is just a catalog, though. The author has intentionally witheld commentary, referring readers to the large literature that already analyzes Munch's work. Reproductions are always printed well, and large enough to be easily recognized. Very few are full sized or even page sized - despite its large format, this isn't a coffee table book of the usual kind. Anyone but a serious fan will find it repetitive and disappointing as a "picture book."

Outstanding, but expensive........2002-01-26

This is sure to become the definitive collection of Munch's graphic work. The plates are beautifully and accurately done (I've seen many of the original prints), and, as the title says, the collection is comprehensive - something which the non-enthusiast probably won't require (multiple prints from the same etching are included, along with all of Munch's later work, post nervous breakdown, that I personally find less appealing). Nevertheless, if you're serious about studying Munch, and money is not a concern, this is a tremendous resource.

Two Comrades remain on the Battlefield:the disfigured and deadly Yatsume Mumyoi, and the Ringleader himself,Enishi.

With this intsallment we have the "official" return of Saito Hajime to the fight to do battle with Meiji Era Venom(well he does look like him and referring to himself in the third person afew volumes back didn't help ^.^).While it's nice to have one of the most intriguing characters in the Series back,he doesn't really have much to do outside of his own fight.I hope he has more involement with the remaining volumes.On a sidenote,I was abit surprised to see Saito actually talk to Kaoru and vice versa(strange).

After that conflict comes the match everyone has been waiting for:Kenshin vs. Enishi.

Enishi still has some tricks up his sleeves and he can actually fight Kenshin on equal terms(!)thanks to a way that combines a Japanese Sword with Mainland Asian Kenjutsu.Once again,that's too many moments to ruin here,but THIS fight is just the first course with a cliffhanger which will leave you wanting the next volume right away.Highly recommanded!!!

A Will Rogers For Our Time.......2000-03-12

A few years ago I awoke to National Public Radio's Morning Edition and to the voice of some easy going, homespun cowboy reading a poem that had me in stitches by the third verse. As I read "Cactus Trails..." I could hear Black's easy voice utter each word. While his departure from veterinary medicine is a loss to that community, it is a clear gain for easy going, common sense, sanity seeking people caught in the cross hairs of our cell phone, pager, eEVERYTHING society. Thanks to Baxter Black's commentary and writings we have an excuse to slow down a bit each day and get in touch with the basics. Will Rogers would love this guy!

Baxter has done it again. He manages to mix humor with social commentary, kind'a makes you think and belly laugh at the same time. Some of this book is politically incorrect--well, good for it! this country takes itself far too seriously, and it needs a good makin'-fun-of, and Baxter is the man for the job. You don't have to be a buckaroo or farmer, or vet to "get" these poems and short stories. It helps to be human, and not one encased in a shell of narrow-minded political correctness! One story in particular, about the frozen septic tank lid, had me laughing so hard I thought I was going to have a conniption. Moments of side-splitting laughter are intertwined with real stories of real people that are touchingly poignant. Bax hits the mark here. Great job!

Gordon Murray, a unique collection of horror films from Mexico began to appear on American late-night television and drive-in screens in the 1960s. Ranging from monster movies clearly owing to the heyday of Universal Studios to the lucha libre horror films featuring El Santo and the "Wrestling Women," these low-budget "Mexploitation" films offer plenty of campy fun and still inspire cult devotion, yet they also reward close study in surprising ways.

This work places Mexploitation films in their historical and cultural context and provides close textual readings of a representative sample, showing how they can be seen as important documents in the cultural debate over Mexico's past, present and future. Interesting but has Major flaws.......2007-03-13

Doyle Greene's examination of the social themes in the "Mexploitation" flicks of the sixties and seventies is interesting, but has a major flaw that none of the reviews I've read have mentioned. The book is a fairly good overview of the K. Gordan Murray versions of the original films, but it is not the "scholarly" work it purports to be. You can't claim to be writing a serious examination of the social themes of a film genre, as Greene claims to be doing in this book, when you've only seen a few of the films! If you pay close attention while reading the book, it becomes obvious that the only films from this genre that Greene has seen are the ones that were dubbed into English and released in the States, and then subsequently released on home video here! In other words, his research on an entire genre of films came solely on what he could find at Blockbuster or the local Wal Mart bargain bin! This limitation is made even more clear when you begin to realize that Greene doesn't even know what the original Spanish dialog in the films was--he always referrs to the English translations when discussing the films. That kind of shallow digging is not what being a true film historian or theoratician is about. That's like writing a "scholarly" book on the social implications of Bollywood films when all you've seen is "Bride and Prejudice" and "Monsoon Wedding."

Now if this was just about "The Mexploitation Films Brought to the USA by K. Gordan Murray" that would be a different thing. But Greene pretends it's more, which is more than a bit disingenuous. Especially when you're paying top dollar like you are for this one.

But, if you want to get a good overview of the Mexploits that were released in the USA, this is still a fun book to check out at the library.

What exactly are the socioeconomic implications of Lucha Libre?.......2006-08-25

This scholarly work examines in great detail the social implications of Lucha Libre movies for Mexican society and their greater influence on world pop culture and art. Although his use of academic jargon occasionally makes for slow reading, Greene obviously loves classic Mexican horror cinema and it shows. He has also done a great deal of research not only into the history of the south-of-the-boarder film industry but into almost every conceivable aspect of Mexican culture at the time: political, social, economic, and artistic. A solid scholastic, he substantiates his conclusions with exclusive footnotes referencing a bewildering number of academic sources.

With all of this said, as a work Mexploitation has two serious problems. The first is that it is a deadly serious, highbrow examination of a fun loving, lowbrow genre. The lighthearted tone Bobb Cotter uses in his seminal Mexican Masked Wrestler Filmography seems a lot more appropriate to the subject matter. Green always seems to be hunting rabbit with a howitzer. Secondly, sometimes a goofy low budget movie is simply that: a goofy low budget movie. Green's almost fervent conviction that the mysteries of the Mexican soul can be unlocked by a minute examination of La Horripilante Bestia Humana is kind of a little creepy and probably says more about the state of American academia in the 1990's than it does about the state of Mexican culture in the 1960's.

Mexploitation is a must for anyone interested the philosophical importance of Lucha Libre films and their historical metacontext, but it is probably too heavy and academic for the casual wrestling fan.

FINALLY, A SERIOUS LOOK AT MEXICAN MONSTER MOVIES!.......2005-08-24

Being a fan of Mexican Monster Movies most of my waking life, I've gone through several changes of opinion about them. As a kid, they were bizarre and fascinating cultural anomalies. As an adolescent and young adult, they became beloved "bad movies", fun for laughing at. In adulthood, one can see how much terrific filmmaking was involved in films like THE BRAINIAC and SAMSON AND THE VAMPIRE WOMEN, how exciting they look today in cultural and entertainment terms, and how valuable a legacy they are to us.

Thus, it is not a moment too soon for author Doyle Greene to take this beloved yet underappreciated genre, and bring it into the 21st century with an astute, loving and insightful critique of the genre in general, and some luminous films in specific.

Drawing from a knowledgeable cultural studies perspective, Greene deftly dissembles the elitist notions of "camp" and "cheese" drawn by such observers as Susan Sontag, and defends the Mexican horror-fantasy universe on its own terms, as valid and exciting cultural product made by competent and passionate filmmakers.

Greene spends a good deal of time on the immensely popular lucha libra genre, populated by wrestlers like Santo and Blue Demon, and of course the adored Wrestling Women, with their prodigious film output. It turns out that these popular and ubiquitous films accurately (and revealingly) reflect Mexican culture during several key time periods, including some of cataclysmic upheaval, as well or better than many more respected cultural yardsticks.

Greene then concentrates on two undisputed classics of the genre, THE BRAINIAC and NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES, and gives the thrilling textual reading these films have long been crying out for. Even if you have loved these movies for decades, Greene's commentary will have you rushing to the VCR to watch them again, so well does he give these enigmatic dark fantasies exciting new life.

When one ponders the significant and consistent themes which populate the Mexploitation Cinema canon as illuminated by Greene's superb treatise, one is fairly amazed that no-one has taken this genre under his wing before, and given it a serious critical look. We have Greene, and McFarland, to thank for correcting this glaring oversight with a book destined to become a cult classic, just like the movies it lauds!

I was happy to supply some of the illustrations to this fine tome, and I couldn't envision them being given a better home.

Best broad introduction to probability for real world games.......2007-05-28

There are many textbooks on college-level mathematical probability, but a smaller number of what I call "textbooks lite" aimed at a reader who is willing to work to learn some interesting parts of a subject. This wonderful book teaches the basic calculations in mathematical probability, but with a combination of breadth and concreteness unrivaled by any other book I know. The book consists of short sections, each giving verbal discussion of problems involving probability, games of chance and related material, and deriving solutions using only arithmetic and occasional elementary combinatorics and algebra. It covers an impressive breadth of topics: lotteries, dice and card games, casino games, TV show games, racetrack betting, some game theory (Prisoners Dilemma, Hawk-Dove games, Male-Female reproductive strategies), combined with the basic laws of probability and the familiar birthday and coupon collector's problems. Part of the content is distinctly British rather than American (cricket and snooker; premium bonds; the particular TV shows). In addition to familiar types of elementary probability calculations such as the craps example, there are more elaborate stories and calculations involving strategies as games progress. I particularly like the chapter giving a gentle yet entertaining introduction to two-person game theory.

Loose thinking can cost money..........2004-12-20

While the book is mainly written on probability in games, which has already been covered in many books, the author coveres the basics of probability and coin tossing very nicely. He also covers the theory of dices thoroughly and approaches "Games with few choices" (Game Theory) with great enthusiasm. Finally the chapter "Probability for Lawyers" with it's terms such as the prosecutors fallacy and the defence attorne's fallacy are a must read for every person interested in the fascinating subject of probabiliy. PS: second edition covers now Bayes's theorem (previous readers criticised the author of missing this important theory in the first issue)

Taking Chances.......2000-09-10

This is a very practical book on probability using common games (cards, dice, coin-toss, etc.) as examples. Explanations are thorough without being too technical. The appendices go into more mathematical detail for those so inclined. The author is British so everything has that slant (money in pounds and pence, Grand National, and so on), but that's not a problem. There's a lot of information packed into the 330 pages of this paperback since the type is fairly small.

An excellent account of probability theory. Whilst definitely geared towards gambling it also sheds new light on some fundamental probability topics.

The text sometimes does get a little numerical - at the expense of the theoretical - but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

The only question I have about the book is why is there no mention of Bayes? Surely a fundamental contributor to probability theory.

The Financial-Integrity Approach (Safe & Cheap).......2007-06-06

After reading this book years ago, I was interested in reading it again for the new release version. Though it is not really an updated main text version, it does have a new forward by Eugene Isenberg (current Chairman of Nabors Industries) and new introduction by the original authors of Martin Whitman and Martin Shubik. Irrespective, it was still an enlightening experience to go over the material again. Since the original printed edition, I believe Mr. Whitman's record speaks for itself, that the "safe and cheap" methods espoused in The Aggressive Conservative Investor are good foundations to a good investment education for what the authors call "the outside passive investor".

However, as some other reviewers have pointed out, this book is not your average investor book structured for easy reading with quick formulas. The book is for the more serious investor as its authors clearly state, for example, "In presenting our position, considerable space is devoted to describing the real world faced by both outsiders and insiders". Their point is that in understanding the viewpoints of both the insider whether corporate management, the banker and/or financier, the directors, the short-term trader, and the outside passive investor, will help you along your way in understanding what may be happening in the market and why because of the interested parties perspective.

Though the book is a little more rough sailing because of this background perspective, to assist, one (after reading the introduction) may want to start in Section 5 first, then go back to the beginning and dig in and it should read more like a traditional investment book. The two (2) case studies in the Appendix sum up the book with narratives of why some insiders (and outsiders) may act as they do.

As for the safe and cheap method, considerable time is spent with emphasis on the importance of the financial position of the security under consideration. This Financial-Integrity approach is detailed and viewed from all the players perspectives in the transaction of a security purchase (or seller) to emphasize the concept of the "guaranty". In addition, even though the authors do state their differences with the Graham & Dodd methods, I feel in the end they are more connected at the hip than their stated differences may imply or indicate.

All in, if you are willing to spend the time and do the work, whether reading annuals, 10-Ks, 10-Qs, then reading this book will assist you in becoming a better investor in your investing activities, but the trip is not recommend for the casual weekend reader.

Value investing produces excellent results.......2007-02-10

but today with all the new tools available to the investor there is a superior method of selecting value stocks. The method is simply use an index that is specifically built to capture the value premium. Then using this index find an Exchange Traded Fund that tracks the Index.

Enough said here is a suggestion.I recommend a little book titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 different stocks for $1000 - Pay no Commission This book is a must for those wanting to find out about indexing (passive investing) and why it is the superior method for the small investor (and big one too). This book is an outstanding guide to personal investing. It will be useful to all investors from novices to highly the highly experienced. This book prepares the reader to approach investing from the standpoint of the underlying science. It is the antithesis of a 'get rich quick scheme'.

All aspects of Modern Portfolio Theory and passive (index) investing are explained in a through and easily understood manner. The aspect I like most is that as well as a solid theoretical foundation the book is very practical and shows the reader how to create (and more importantly) and manage over time a successful portfolio. This is a great book- for the beginning investor, it's a great place to start and for the experienced investor there are many valuable suggestions. The most extraordinary part of The Aggressive Conservative Investor is that it tells the reader how minority investors can benefit by knowing and understanding how control investors make investment decisions.

If one is smart enough to realize how insiders and control investors made fortunes by taking advantage of the market cycles to do the arbitrage between private and public market, one will come to appreciate the beauty of the safe-and-cheap approach as detailed in this book.

I have come across a few negative comments on the book regarding the use of "out-dated" materials. This certainly does not take me by a surprise, as not everybody has 50 years of investment experience as Whitman does, so, naturally, not everybody can understand what "there is no new thing under the sun" means.

This book is a total waste of time and effort!!!! It is poorly written and very vague. Also, its information is too old!!!

I bought this book because it was reviewed well. I have no idea who liked it, nor whom it is for. It's definitely not an investor's book, despite the title. It's more of a diatribe by the authors against Graham and Dodd -- go read that instead.

It claims to be the updated version. The preface mentions Enron, but everything else is from the 60s and 70s, with examples of oil at $5 a barrel.

Overall, it's a disappointment, with very little that's useful or interesting.
