Book Description
Investigating the nature of art and the uses of art in society, EXPERIENCING ART AROUND US teaches students how to understand, critically judge, and experience art. This mainstream art appreciation text discusses the visual elements of art, such as line, light, color, and space, and the principles of design that all artists use; examines not only the traditional visual media of painting, sculpture, and architecture, but also more recent areas such as urban design and preservation, photography and film; and probes the cultural institutions that affect contemporary artistic activity. Integrating Western and non-Western art, EXPERIENCING ART AROUND US exposes students to a wide variety of artistic works from around the world, yet emphasizes works in public collections that students can see, featuring a diverse array of female, African American, and Latino artists, as well as up-to-date coverage of the contemporary art scene. Analyzing a single work from four different points of view teaching critical thinking skills, this text offers students a wider variety of study aids than any other text on the market.

Book Description
It's the ultimate expression of love to wear matching rings with your significant other, showing the world that you are a couple. High school student, Wataru Fujii, also wears one even though he is single. When he accidentally switches rings with a popular and handsome senior, Yuichi Kazuki, they discover that their rings pair up! Since that moment, Kazuki - who is known for being kind to all - becomes strangely harsh to Wataru. They alternate between hot and cold, as in between clashes they begin to sort their feelings for one another. Are Wataru and Kazuki the worst of enemies or are they actually soulmates?
Customer Reviews:
Lovely book tho DMP coulda done betta.......2006-12-23
As DMP's first Novel translated because of its popularness as a Manga I would have expected DMP to take a little more time to make this Novel perfect. There are a couple of mistakes and whatnot and confusing areas (due to lazy translation) but overall it's a beautifully written story (mainly contains everything in the Manga of the same title) and the images are gorgeous.
It's a light BL Novel atm, doubt it'll reach a Yaoi Label. And goes for 4 volumes.
But this is a deffient buy for anyone who is looking for a Novel to add to their Yaoi/BL collection.
Lovely!.......2006-09-14
I guess most of us pick up this novel because we enjoy the manga version.
I like the manga but I love the novel more. This novelist's expression of the boys' budding love is simply beautiful. Thankfully the translation did not let us down even though more editing would have been appreciated. I could not help regretting not knowing Japanese (sigh!).
Vol 1 has 2 stories. The manga is based on the first story but even the pleasing graphics and faithful adaptation could not beat the expressive words depicting the angst and romance in the novel.
And of course there is the second story which is even more emotional and the last part when our 2 boys finally consume their love is touching and warmly romantic and described with a fluid grace. This second story was never published in any manga form.
For the price, the novel is definitely worth its weight in gold considering I have no qualm about spending close to $10 bucks for the manga.
Glad there are 2 more volumes to go in this beautiful series. After reading "Don't worry Mama" and this, I am hungry for more translated Japanese BL/Yaoi novels.
An Absolute Must-Have!!!.......2006-05-11
I absolutely love this novel! The story itself is great to begin with; not that the manga didn't do a wonderful job bringing the characters to life, but it didn't continue the second part of the novel which was about Wataru and Yuichi's time together as a couple.
The first half of the novel titled "Only the ring finger knows" is similar to the manga, so i won't elaborate more about this part. The second part titled "The lonely ring finger" is what you should look forward to (i know i did!).
"The lonely ring finger" is a continuation of Wataru and Yuichi's relationship after they became a couple; how they try to spend time together without revealing themselves to their peers in school, a bet that is out-of this-world, etc, etc; in my opinion, this second part tells more about their "human" side and their struggles to stay together (like how any other normal couples would) despite all the mishaps and lies.
Other than a few typo errors here and there, i find this novel a joy to read and have; it's a must-have for you yaoi fans out there! I can't wait for the second novel to be released in July!!!!
the confusion's the best part!.......2006-04-21
as the other reviews say, the first story is already manga, but the extra details make it worth rereading. and the second one gives a great view of japanese school life and makes you feel like you really are there. but the best thing of all is the confusion, and i'm not just talking about between the boys. wataru's confused by yuichi's actions... yuichi's confused by his own reactions... all the worrying, wondering.... but the thing i really love is that it's never really clear which one is the seme and which is the uke. scene by scene is changes as to which one shows more confidence, more belief in their feelings than the other one.
oh and i do agree, the last illustration is amazing! i'm just wondering if the other stories will be/are manga too.
Simply beautiful........2006-04-16
The original novel of the popular BL manga is finally on American shores. This has got to be one of the most anticipated BL releases of the year for me, and I was not disappointed. Setting aside the awkward cliches and predictable plot, the story is absolutely beautiful.
If you enjoyed the manga version of this story, you will definitely enjoy the novel. It is divided into two parts. The first part, Only the Ring Finger Knows, follows very closely the story of the manga. Or, should I say, the manga followed this story very closely. This was fairly refreshing, as often a story gets condensed when it is transferred into a visual medium.
If you haven't read the manga, but are interested in the genre, you may very well still enjoy this title. The premise of the story is that Wataru Fujii, a second year high school student accidentally switches rings, a symbol of romance and fad at his school, with the very popular third year Yuichi Kazuki, who is renowned for his gentle kindness and good looks. Kazuki's attitude towards Wataru is anything but kind, and it leads the two down a two week long path of misunderstandings, confusion and heartache, all of which revolve around their "coincidentally" matching rings. Part one is very tame, only describing a couple of very sweet kisses and dealing primarily with the boys' conflicted emotions and their complicated relationship.
The second part, The Lonely Ring Finger, occurs less than two months after the first. Kazuki is studying for his practice entrance exams for college and this causes their already strained relationship to become even more difficult as the two are not as able to spend time together. Things are complicated further when Wataru "loses" the ring that Kazuki exchanged with him, and lies about it.
Part two is considerably more heated than part one was. If more graphic depictions of [...] romance make you sqeamish, I suggest passing on the novels and stick with the manga, which stops the story after part one. If they don't make you sqeamish, the end of part two will be a beautiful climax to a beautiful story.
The translation is lacking in some places, and the numerous typoes were annoying to someone like me who is a stickler for such things, but in all, the experience was not unpleasant. The illustrations were few, but they were in fact drawn by the same illustrator as the manga, and include depictions of scenes that are not in the manga.
The read actually takes some time. Most of the novelized manga I have read so far have been very quick reads, sometimes taking as much or less time to get through than their manga counterparts, but this smaller than normal sized novel took me several hours to get all the way through.
All we can really do now is wait impatiently for volume two to come out.

Book Description
Who would think open-heart surgery at the age of 25 could be funny! Hilariously funny.
Take Heart! True Stories of Life, Love, and Laughter chronicles the challenges faced by Rudy Wilson Galdonik, motivational humorist and heart patient. Whether it's the challenge of having $40,000 worth of "stuff" in her chest to keep her heart ticking (that's the uninstalled price of 2 mechanical heart valves, a pacemaker, bovine patch, assorted leads and a pacer wire named Emily), being an off-the-wall animal lover or just a Yankee living in the Deep South, Rudy keeps readers in stitches while she encourages them to see the funny.
If you've ever caught yourself ogling at your neighbor's trash, or considered your pet a four-legged child, or tried to pass as genteel and failed miserably, then consider this book. If you select doctors based on sex appeal, dance with the finesse of a spastic robot, or know someone who drives The Ugliest Car in the World, then this book is a definite must-read. Rudy writes like most people think, but are afraid to admit. You'll laugh, you'll cry. You'll see yourself over and over on every page of these hilarious and often times poignant stories.
Customer Reviews:
Faith, illness and above all HUMOR in a three way headon collision!.......2007-06-07
Rudy Galdonik has lived through a lot of painful experiences. But so have a lot of other people. What sets her apart is how she shares them in such a humorous way through her book TAKE HEART. In it she masterfully takes some of life's hardest curve balls and hits them out of the park! Especially hysterical is her story "Three's A Crowd" about her room mates during her second long hospital stay. I was laughing so hard the person sitting next to me on the plane almost called the flight attendant! This is a warm, spiritual, unbelievably funny book that you will not be able to put down. Highly recommended for you or for someone in your life who needs a little laughter.
Feeling Good.......2004-05-03
I was amazed to read a book about so many life problems, and end up feeling good at the end! The author certainly knows how to keep life in perspective, and does it with great wit. On a number of occasions I burst out laughing. I would call this a "light read" due to the sense of humor of the author. What a great example of making lemonade out of lemons!
A Five Heart Beat Rating!!!!!.......2004-03-03
One of those books that is hard to put down once you start reading. Doris Day meets Jerry Seinfeld. Multiple heart surgeries, raising a family, and experiencing widow-hood at an early age would do most of us mere mortals in. Rudy manages to take on all these experiences and give a humorous and soulful insight into dealing with life's challenges. Reading this book you go from profound sympathy to a grin from ear to ear, page after page. I used to think the heart was that thing in your body that pumps the blood around. Rudy has that unique writer's gift that can deftly story-tell the emotional heart that keeps us all going, spinning humor and inspiration from cover to cover
And you thought you had problems!.......2004-03-02
And I thought I had it bad....this is a story that made me appreciate the few scars I carry on my body and in my heart. Rudy is as cute as her name and her words of encouragement are as priceless as the machinery in her petite frame that keeps her ticking like a Timex watch in a washing machine. She writes with honest emotion and belly laughing humor. You'll get caught up in her life as she works through the unfairness, the frustations and the funny stuff of ordinary life. From scolding interns to stealing out of the neighbors trash ( my personal favorite), she seems to have found a wonderfully refreshing way to simply cope.
If you are having a blue period in your life, or riding on a rainbow, you need a dose of Rudy Wilson Galdonik and you will wish she was living next door. She willingly gives her heart, so TAKE HEART!
We loved this book!.......2004-03-01
Rudy has a gift to share her world in a witty, self-deprecating and joyful way. You will laugh out loud and want to read passages to anyone nearby who will listen. It's amazingly life affirming even when dealing with the biggest challenges we face. Taking Heart will make you want to be a better person, but be able to smile even if you fail. When you put it down, you will want to immediately pick it up again. It is a wonderfully entertaining book that uses humor to deal with life's greatest obstacles. Thinking of Rudy as the new millennium Erma Bombeck is easily justified.

Ghost World
ASIN: 1560974397 |
Book Description
Edited and designed by Daniel Clowes, and co-written by Clowes and director Terry Zwigoff, The Ghost World Screenplay is more of a scrapbook of the making of the film than simply a published screenplay. Of course, the 125-page screenplay is included, and is presented as an exact fascimile of the original script. This is the original script as written before filming, and as such includes several scenes and dialogue (over 30 pages of material!) not included in the final cut.
The script is wrapped around a beautiful original cover by Clowes, as well as a new comic strip on the inside front cover, featuring Ghost World's Enid and Rebecca. Also included is a lengthy color section designed by Clowes and featuring never-before-seen photos and other unique ephemera from the making of the film, including illustrations created for the film's sets by Clowes, and illustrations from Enid's sketchbook in the film, created by Sophie Crumb (daughter of cartoonist R. Crumb).
Along with the release of both the Ghost World film from MGM/UA, and the re-release of Clowes' Ghost World graphic novel from Fantagraphics, The Ghost World Screenplay is sure to be a must-have for the legion of devoted fans who have made Clowes the best-selling alternative comic book artist in the world. Also, this special screenplay edition is presented in the same size as the graphic novel, making it a perfect bookshelf companion for one of the best-selling and most critically-acclaimed graphic novels of all-time.
Customer Reviews:
A Paradigm of Great Screenwriting.......2004-03-05
Ghost World is one of those great movies reliant on its screenplay. While director Terry Zwigoff certainly made his 2001 film visually fresh and inventive, the film's energy and strength came from the incredible dialogue, well-written characters, and pop culture observation- all derived from Zwigoff's script (co-written with Daniel Clowes and adapted from Clowes' graphic novel).
The screenplay begins with opening letters from its authors, both of which contain hilarious and touching anecdotes on the screenwriting process. Both affirm the difficulty of writing such a screenplay. There is also a few pages of candid polaroids of characters (my favorite photo is of Teri Garr's hilariously gauche creation, Maxine). There is also a very funny new comic strip involving main characters Enid and Rebecca written especially for the screenplay book. Between its attractive front cover and enlightening packaging, this is a very handsome book.
The screenplay itself is brilliant, and I certainly was thrilled when Zwigoff and Clowes were nominated for the 2001 best screenplay Oscar. It has a taut three-act structure, funny one liners, and memorable interesting characters: teen outcasts: Enid, Rebecca (played by Thora Birch and Scarlet Johansson in the movie); adult outcast: Seymour (Steve Buscemi in the movie); iconoclastic hick: Doug; flakey art teacher: Roberta (Illeana Douglas); clueless Dad (Bob Balaban). The screenplay is very literate and is a pleasure to read.
My favorite line is when Rebecca says at a particularly lame high school graduation party, "This is so bad it's almost good..." to which Enid responds, "This is so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again."
Great movie, great screenplay.......2001-10-25
I have recently started reading screenplays, and this was given as a gift after having seen Ghost World four times. This is an excellent movie and I recommend it to most anyone.
The screenplay itself is just a screenplay, but a well written one. There are a few scenes that were either cut or shortened, and I really enjoyed them. But the best part of the book was all the extras, like introductions by Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff. Plus there were a lot of pictures, and all the scene notes at the end were very interesting.
If you liked Ghost World, or you just like screenplays, check this one out. It's one of the best that I've read.

Book Description
Music aesthetics in late-eighteenth-century Germany has always been problematic because there was no aesthetic theory to evaluate the enormous amount of high-quality instrumental music produced by composers such as Haydn and Mozart. This book derives a practical aesthetic theory from an analysis of 1,300 reviews of instrumental music published in Germany between 1760 and 1798. The reviews document an intersection with trends in literature and philosophy, and reveal interest in criteria such as genius, the expressive power of music, and the necessity of unity, several decades earlier than has previously been supposed.

Surprisingly Good.......2003-02-28
A month after beginning the module, my group is still talking about it. My friends have stated that the mystery and role playing aspects in this module led to intense discussions regarding moral choices and decisions.
Unlike a dungeon crawl, this module is a bit more openended after the party eventually arrives to the village, and as the DM, it provided me with some opportunities to spur thought about exactly what the group was really accomplishing. Since my group never follows the delineated path anyhow, and muck around with things unforeseen by module creators, this was the type of storyline that allowed them to excel at their craft.
Interesting story with some twists and turns.......2002-02-20
Overall I found this adventure interesting. The plot is good, couple this with some twists and turns and it can really keep players going in circles and second guessing themselves.
One of the other reviewers has some good points regarding one of the plot points and the elves. Although the elves actions are understandable within the story given, running them along those lines could cause the PC's to never quite figure out what is really going on.
I question the level rating of this adventure. It is rated for a group of 4 7th level characters. There are 2 encounters that are extremely difficult if run as the adventure describes (one EL 12, another EL 13). My group of 6 10th level PC's had a hard time with the final battle. There was over 100 HP damage done to the mage and the party was almost out of spells. Nearly all the PC's had significant damage. If it wasn't for a counter spell, and a very lucky attack roll much of the party would have died. I'm not so sure a 7th level party would have survived this encounter.
Like I said above, overall I found this adventure fun to run, and most importantly the players had a good time. If you are looking to add some role playing to your game, this adventure provides ample opportunities.
Nice plot, how could you not like it?.......2002-01-21
This adventure is a great one.Very good elements of surprise and mystery. My gaming group normally gets sidetracked with jokes and stuff like that. With this one they didn't at all.I love how they split it into scenes. It allows alot of thinking and hack and slash isn't as fun.For any DM who likes having fun adventures, (everyone) buy this.
Not a whole lot to it.......2001-08-09
I ran this adventure as a DM. Its usable, but pretty poorly written. It contains some good storylines, but they aren't developed well. It leaves a lot of work for the DM if you want this module to be worthwhile.
Yawn..........2001-08-09
A usable module, but mediocre at best. Thin plot. Not a whole lot to it.

IRA for the long term.......2007-06-27
I think I understood the underlying theme of this book, but the author made it more difficult to read and understand than need be. It seemed he was trying to be either clever or funny to the detriment of the content.
Help when I Need It.......2007-01-13
ONly on the first chapter and already learning what I should be doing. Easy to read and understand. With book's help I may be able to save a lot of money.
Concise info on stretch IRA's.......2007-01-04
Ed Slott is considered THE expert on stretch IRA's. Book is aimed at investors who will probably die before depleting their IRA funds. It explains how to structure a stretch IRA to pass this money on to future generations with minimal taxation.
Book is better organized than Slott's previous books. It is very readable. I keep it for a reference and have purchased additional copies for gifts.
Requried Reading for Anyone with an IRA........2006-07-23
This book focuses on ensuring that your IRA is properly set up, so that it can be passed on to beneficiaries intact, effectively establishing a "stretch IRA". The stretch IRA describes an IRA held by a beneficiary, and which will pay out over their lifetime.
This book is very well organized, and the author is clearly very enthusiastic about his subject. He does quite well making his case, that you should ensure your IRA passes intact to a beneficiary, in that it can offer them HUGE tax advantages for their entire life time.
He is also quite good about explaining the steps you need to achieve this. Much of the book is reference material that will not apply to everyone at any given time, but that is not a real criticism. The book is cheap enough, and the sections that apply to all are worth the entire purchase price.
If you have an IRA, and you have any desire to pass your assets along to a beneficiary, this book is an excellent starting point.

Customer Reviews:
excellent source of information.......2007-01-12
I found this book to be very helpful in my financial planning for retirement...it gives easy to follow steps, suggestions, ideas and guidelines for maximizing your IRA's,401k's and retirement funds. Ed Slott has provided us with another excellent source of information for the everyday Joes like me....he does not overwhelm you with minutia and needless facts and figures...By reading this book you may not become an IRA guru but it will enable you to ask the right questions to your professional financial planner.I have passed it on to my family members to read and make their financial plans accordingly.
IRA Bible.......2006-11-04
The author is easy to understand and makes this highly specialized material fun to read. I refer to this book and Mr Slott's other book, "The Retirement Savings Time Bomb" as my IRA Bible's. This is a must read for financial services professionals and consumers with money in IRA accounts.
Excellent information on Trust and IRAs.......2005-11-26
Ed does a great job on giving you detailed information of how to stretch your IRA assets for the next generation. He also does a great job of including information on how to write your trust so that you can control your assets beyond the grave. This is mainly important for clients who have lots of assets in their IRAs or for people who just pass away before they use their IRA assets. Since you don't know when you are going to pass away, I think it is important to get your trust and your IRA beneficiaries set up as soon as possible.
One downside of this book is that Ed seems to sell more of his stuff - his newsletter and his training. If you read his books, I think you have most of the information you need unless you run into very complicated situations. If that happens, then I would suggest getting a good financial advisor, CPA, and an estate planning lawyer to assist you.
Little added.......2005-09-04
Ed Slott repeated alot of what was included in "The Retirement Savings Time Bomb...", so I was not as impressed with this book. You can get 98% of what to do in the "Time Bomb". But if you really want to save all your money to your kids and their kids, it should help you.
